i was told the render isn't visible enough....
well I think so too actually
i bet if you place the darker side to the left, and the bright side to the right, it would be much better (with the commando still at the left side like it is now)
but the effects really do look awesome! its just that the render doesn't come out enough imho

sounds like a smart idea, however the render has the big white spot on its head originally, so i think the lighting wouldn't work if it was flipped.

sounds like a smart idea, however the render has the big white spot on its head originally, so i think the lighting wouldn't work if it was flipped.
then make it look like the light is shining directly from behind... so that the "light" is actually the shape of the helmet and he is entering a dark room
imagine yourself to sit in a dark room, and this guy is comming in from outside where the light is burning..
make the upper left a bit darker, but leave the space directly behind him "white" (like it is now)
Its just that the helmet doesn't come out enough on the left side, it has the same colour and brightness
hmm I'll try to show what I mean, could take a while because I see how difficult it is
edit: can't do it xD
basically the same colour/patterns you use @ the right side, for the left side but you leave a small gap of "white" behind the helmet..... ahhh I don't know, it might look stupid after doing that :P so you could try to make the layer with the render have a bit more contrast, this way the render will come in front automatically

You shouldn't do the render more visible Kage, looks great like it is. Once you find the render, which takes like 1.5 seconds it just jumps at you. Great work as alwys from you.
EDIT: Great touch with your name hidden like that, It's awesome to be able to discover things while watching an image for a while.

yes its true but its a bit "foggy". it looks a bit like what happens to a picture if you resize is too often.

Oh man, I haven't been here in like three months. Guys, totally awesome work.
Kage, 1st is looking wayyyy legit. Work on the lighting in the upper right a bit, make it a bit darker to match the area between the far upperleft and the render.
The second is decent; font is bugging me. Something less formal like Futura or Verdana with spacing and a small size would obviously be a prime choice. Colors are nice though.
I've only got one new work. NSFW;

@ shinta
don't know myself.. it's "different" because really the first thing that came into my mind was an advertisment for paprika or something like that
but that aside, the sig is pretty good.. no unnecessary effects and not overfilled with the render itsself.
It's simple, as you said yourself... well I start to like the signature right now, but I do dislike your avatar now haha xD.
Maybe it's just too much C.C. for me, but that would be weird because I like her..hmmm dunno maybe it's just her expression she makes on it ^^
Lucifus... perfect... I *LOVE* her look on that render, is it out of the intro scene?
never saw that picture before... she looks awesome with this "smile" (well it's a smile isn't it?) looking down at me ^^ (this would be a perfect avatar btw :P)

this one looks so awesome I copied and edited it a bit myself... you get such nice result with very little effort! you get some really nice stuff just by adding a little colour into it.
(don't worry I wont "steal" it I just did it because it was fun ^^)
you should really try to improve it a bit more, its worth it
I made like 2 clicks and it became something like this (http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/3456/silve22rbw22222rv1.png) (you need to fix the name but hey that shouldn't be a problem)
I don't know but I prefer darker signatures
I'd love to see you working on the last one a bit more and add some nice colours/effects because at the moment your third one is really *too* dark and you can't see much detail ^^

Isn't it about time you made us a new tutorial for our languishing tutorial thread, Luci? Gorgeous work as always, although you might want to mix up your render placement a bit. The centre isn't always the best place to put a render. Make use of a little assymetry, and you can get some nice visual effects.

Hehe, thanks guys. Though I can't really take all the credit for it.

All I did was add in Maka and everyone else on the left hand side (and edited the Japanese text). The original seemed so plain so I thought I could do some more with it. Tried to align the images as best as I could so there was still room for adding icons.
I guess you guys don't see too many people making wallpapers in this thread eh? I used to make a bunch of them when I whored out on photoshop. :p

Those pictures were from the manga actually. I went looking for them after the last episode (see the ending of the last episode). Only Blair was missing.
But actually, I kind of wanted to take out Neko-Blair from there; was kind of just going for the technicians and weapons. But if I do that then part of Patty's feet gets cut off with it. So I just went with what was there already.
Maybe if I'm inclined to do another Soul Eater wallpaper (completely from scratch), I'll see if I can fit in Blair's witch form. SE is like my newest favorite anime right now so it might happen. :D

I've only watched the first episode of Casshern SINS, but somehow I immediately knew that's what your set was from. The art style is what gives it away. Not really liking the bg on the sides... the right side of it just seems to stop at a horizontal line... the left side flows much better. Love the render though, and your ava is great.
Kage, long time no see... great sig, the effects are amazing. I don't really care much for rap, so I can't really comment on the render. But keep it up.
I need to get back to Photoshop myself... I had to get a new hard drive since my old one crashed, and I haven't found a valid torrent of CS3 yet. I might just have to break down and reinstall CS2. Are there any major differences between them?

im thinkin the sig would be better if you made the blur more subtle. Dont lessen it, just regular or guassian blur the motion blur. Woah lots of blur.
bg looks fine, then again anything blurred in the bg usually does... the colors are bleh IMO i'd change em up.

Luci, I agree with Kage on the colours. Nice sig overall, but I have an aversion to pastels.
Kage, excellent work. I especially like how well your text fits.
Alhuin, I haven't tried CS3, but I'm guessing that unless you're dissatisfied with CS2, there isn't a pressing need to switch. CS2 is pretty good for being able to do everything that it needs to do for making a sig. The important thing is getting one of them installed and doing some gfx work again

Looking good !!
The text is the main problem. You can barely read it. Lighten the tone so all the letters are the same shade as the C, if not more, and play around from there.
I see you've used an edgy/rugged font for the words. It's nice, and I like it. Enhance that rugged feel by firstly lightening it to give it more contrast against the darker black, then make the edges a darker border again to make it feel as if the words are etched/carved/sunken into the background like rock. I can see the back's not meant to be a cliff or any sort of "rock", but I feel the effect would look good.
Anyway, there's some suggestion from a noob ;)
Looking forward to your next version!

How's this? I lightened the text and made it more defining. If it's still too dark, I apologize... on my screen it's clearly visible (as was the last one), but everyone's screen brightness is different, so I can't really judge.
In any case, this will probably be my last revision for awhile. I want to work on some different pieces.

I, too, remember when this thread used to be actively active. Kage, PSJ, Foomanchew, a50, and several others.... Hell, I remember when Lucifus first started posting sigs. This thread was the only reason I posted on the forums back then, to be honest.
Anyways, here's a new one from me. I used a lot of different techniques from a lot of different tuts. No idea who the render is of, or what it's from... but I thought it was cool so I decided to use it. I tried to give it a "sunset" feel. Don't know if I succeeded. Like all my other sigs, I'll probably make some revisions before it's final, and I upload it to my deviantART.

@ Alhuin: Very nice Alhuin, single 1 px border look superb on that one.
My only suggestion would be to bring out some of the color in the center of the render, still desaturated mind you, but it would look magnificent with the sunset lighting and you'd also be able to read your name.:D Good job.

@ Lucifus: I revamped my "sunset" sig and made my name more visible and tried to darken the center of the render some more, like you suggested. I won't post it here, since it's such a small change, but I should have it up on my DA page within the next couple of days if anyone wants to see it.
Anyways, this is my latest.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Alhuin/Sigs/WakingUp.jpg
I tried to go with a different style of border here, since the single, black, 1px border didn't look good enough on it. It's my first time trying a different style border, so it probably still needs some work. I may also need to replace the background (I can see how it would feel bland to some people). But, wanted to get some criticism from others before I made finishing touches.
PS... Great sigs Luc, I especially like the CC one.
PSS... If it's hard to read my name on this one too, I apologize. My screen's brightness is pretty high.

I don't mind your border at all. It's a very light (as oppose to heavy) that suits your atmosphere IMO. The simplicity of the sig is also very refreshing.
Your name is hard to make out on my display, but as long as it looks fine on yours, that's all that matter, right?

Hey man, I'll tell it to you straight. I've always tried to pack much new techiniques as I can learn into signatures to refresh the style, the the outcomes always the same.
Nothing beats simplicity. I mean look at Shinta's lastest. Effing beautiful!

I might still mess around with the border some, but if you all like if for it's simplicity, then I guess it's done. Gonna post it on another forum and see what they say. I have a few more that I'm working on... but I can't finish them yet because I'm running out of ideas to keep them "fresh". Gonna look around at some more tuts probably tonight or tomorrow.
I'd like to make a new one to use here, but it's so hard to work with a 100px height restriction (I've tried at least 4 different sigs, but nothing is coming out right).
And I second the motion for anyone/everyone with Photoshop skills (novice or professional) to crank out a few pages worth of sig revival.

@ Lucifus... I really really like the Rider sig... a great render, and an amazing background. Might I ask what effects you used on it? Or was it originally like that? Text looks good as always. As for the Nerine sig, I don't really like it, mostly because of the background. I just don't feel it fits the render. I think it would look a lot better on a smaller canvas with maybe like.. a snowy background, or a "cool" background (cool as in temperature)... or something. The render and text are nice though. As for your Belldandy sig... wonderful, I just don't like the black brush strokes at the bottom. Doesn't feel right in the sig. It draws my interest away from the focal point. Of course, upon closer inspection, it looks as though that may be a part of the actual background stock, and if so, I guess there's not much you can do. And lastly, your CC sig... I like it, but like Shinta said, would probably look better with the render closer. The background looks amazing, and I respect you for being able to pull off a wonderful sig on a Mac (I haven't used a Mac, but I imagine if you can't right click, it's difficult enough to Photoshop). I don't really like the text on it though... or at least the "thy will be done" part. And I think you should try to blend the render in a bit more, especially around her hair. I can see a lot of choppiness.
@ Zinobi: I'm liking your style, but I have a few issues with the sig. First of all, I suggest making your name a little less visible. Try lowering the opacity on it, or set it to soft light... try to make it blend it a little bit more so it doesn't draw interest away from your focal point. I like your idea of the brushing on his hand/gun to kinda make it "stick out", but the brushing you used kinda looks like someone took a 1px pencil on white and scribbled to try and make it look like brushing. I recommend going to deviantart and downloading some brushes... there are plenty out there with a brush in them that would look amazing for the effect you were going for. The background seems a little weird for the render, but it looks cool. As well as the border, though I'm just not used to using that style of border. The sig has great potential. Keep up the good work, and take a look at some tutorials. They're a great way to learn new techniques and keep your sigs looking fresh, as well as improving a lot faster than by just you're own experimentation. :)
EDIT: As for some new sigs for me... I've been busy the past couple of days, so haven't really finished any. But I have a few in the making. Still looking for ways to improve though, so it may be awhile before I finish another one. And, I'm still on a quest to find a reputable sig to replace my current on the forums. Haha...

The first one is great, Nad. I like the texture of it, and the simplicity/calmness. The text feels a bit out of place (at that spot), but it's not bad. Everything seems to flow nicely. I just recommend putting your name in there somewhere (don't want anyone bogarting your style... haha). The second one I'm not feeling so much. The render needs to be more of the main focal point, so I recommend making it more centralized and a bit bigger. Everything after that, though, I'm at a loss for.
Keep up the good work and look forward to seeing more. Don't forget to look online for some tuts if you want to try out some new techniques. :)

@shinta: I'm gonna have to take the bad rep for this, but I'm not really liking your latest sig. The style/simplicity is great, but I don't think it compares to your previous. It may just be because I dislike the colour brown, and the majority of the focal in the sig is the brown of her boots. But, in terms of flow, using your words, your last was more "soft and tranquil". That's the kinda style I like. I do like the kanji though (which I'm guessing either means "Kannagi" or "Nagi-sama", or just, your name). Keep up the good work! :)
@ Nad: Your sigs are looking better. I like the background on the first one, but seeing as how I have the wallpaper that your second sig comes from, I'm wondering... do you just crop out a piece of wallpaper for your sigs? You're doing fine making them look simplistic yet elegant for what you have shown, but I just want to say don't be afraid to use some cut out renders and make your own backgrounds. :) Your drop shadow + grey stroke on the border is similar to a past technique from me (well, the drop shadow part at least)... so I'm liking it. Haha... You keep up the good work as well!

I try to keep the original source as tactful as I can, so I don't add my name or anything to it. If I modify it, it would be like adding a criss-cross or some minor blur effect. They don't make a big difference when I view them, but I guess I can try to use some techniques to an extent. :D

I don't consider "lighting" and the "transparency of a layer" to the same thing personally. They are two totally different facets of techinical principles of photography/image manipulation.
You can't really achieve an effect like transparency with lighting, it is part of the exposure or development process (done with a short/partial double exposure to the negative, or projecting an image onto the print from the negative in a similar way).

there now its cleeean
if the render doesn't look like it belongs to the point where it needs to be lower in opacity, or "translucent". Then the relevant lighting between bg and render is off... no? And that would just be a way to maybe solve the problem...

....Not really. Perhaps if you had said "lighting of the foreground respective to the bg" (as the affect can be done in post-processing) but that wasn't really the issue, as the term "lighting" still inaccurately describes opacity. Opacity is entirely dependent on what in traditional film is called exposure time.
Take this terrible MS Paint illustration I produced.
http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/2822/photoeffectsax3.jpg
Lighting really has almost nothing to do with the appearance of the image, but rather the content WITHIN the image. There are plenty of post-processing "lighting" effects in PS, but those still don't affect the opacity of the actual image.
A difference in terminology I suppose. Blame my background in traditional photography dating back to elementary school Tech Ed courses.
By the way, If i'm not mistaken, this is your first venture into this section? xD
Or perhaps before I joined. This quite probably would be the first. Since I'm one of the holdouts who never uses signatures (in this or any other forums), I can't say I spend a great deal of time in this section.
EDIT: By the way, I am going to stop driving this thread off-topic with this post. This content belongs in another thread.

this thread is usually dead so i think youre good to talk pretty much anything...
but geeeez guY. thanks for the diagrams, glad to see you had art class too :D
all i read was "you didnt say respective lighting instead of relative." and a little bit of blood shot out my ear.
"Lighting really has almost nothing to do with the appearance of the image, but rather the content WITHIN the image." Whaaaaaa?
idk bra maybe you shouldnt try to apply your photography lessons from elementary school to sigs?
I was wrong when i first used the 'lighting' term, true..... what i meant was the brightness-contrast. But if you REALLY wanna get technical with me, lighting is also used to refer to how much reflective light shines onto the image. And with signatures its especially hard to actually fuck up the lighting you were so kind to draw us a picture of. Since its such a small workspace you can basically ignore that detail and worry about more important things such as contours and value. But yeaaaah looking at the sig I still say the lightings screwy, in every sense of the word. So screwed that you couldnt fix it with a quick opacity change.
Sorry lucifus, didnt wanna crush your hopes and dreams but he made me do it.

Ehh... been away for a while. Kinda got burnt out in PS making sigs. I do that from time to time when I overuse a new technique and cant come up with anything new. But... I did recently do a photo manipulation for a friend.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Alhuin/Agehanotext-dark.jpg
I'd like to add some text to it... and I did a version with text on it, but I didnt like the way it came out. Too dark. Not to mention I've never really been good with text. Oh, and I'm aware that part of her skin appears really white... I kinda like the effect...
Anyways, here (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Alhuin/n68101788_31734048_5852.jpg) is a link to the original picture, so you can see what all I did. Any comments would be appreciated.

nice simple manip Al, i agree the text would be hard to pull off with this.
maybe do somethin else to the hand/bottom of the pic instead of blurring-smudging it like the rest of the bg. maybeee some trippy color overlays? it has good colors the way it is i just think that would make it a lot more eye catching.

Sun, 01-18-2009, 05:55 AM
idk im not pro but what i find to work is using some brushing of the base color you want, then smudging it around with some textured brushes, any default brush will do, then set the layer blending options to something that works like overlay or lighten. the hard part is keeping your brushing interesting and eye pleasing at the same time.
your manip inspired me to start one of my own, started off as one of those 'hey look at me' facebook editions... but having a terence mckenna lecture on in the background sent me into a slightly different direction :P

Since I feel like it, and having constructively criticized others' work here in the past, here is a sig I made some time ago for another forum (hence the improper dimensions).
Warning: Potential Fate/Stay Night spoiler (most would know anyway).
The signature Ryll once made (http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/8121/darksakurasigaf9.png)
In what way could I improve this?
I have no intention of using this sig here, so if you want it, by all means use it.
EDIT:
Here's another one just for fun (also improper dimensions).
"Dare to Dream"
http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/9371/daretodreamsiggystarsvn2.png
This one is a bit oversaturated on the image side (I didn't bother to level it when I should have).

The Sakura one has an interesting theme, but the focus is scattered. It is usually best to keep only one side or the center of the sig as a focal point.
I definitely like your "Dare to Dream" sig. There is just a little gap in continuity (like a definite break or division) at the top middle part where the two images meet.

There is too much attention being drawn into the background and not enough into lovely Saber and lovelier Rin.
Also, in the second one, it looks like you just threw the text in there without much consideration for its location.

The transition of the smudge and blur effects into the center of the image is kind of abrupt. It works well coming in from the upper right of her (where the image is a little more textured and complex), but it looks a little awkward on smoother surfaces like her skin.

idk if its from looking at sigs everyday for a while and posting my thoughts on them but a couple things come to mind I think might be of some use to you my friend....
things I dont like; the text... too much contrast... colors are blehhh, seems liek you used too much yellow and red saturation... needs a "focal point" or something to focus the attention to, doesn't necessarily have to be a render or something like that. Could create it by utilizing negative space, which you dont have much of. As for the bg, could be worse, but its kinda cluttered and doesnt have any 'flow' to it, or its all moving around in different directions making it seem chaotic and not too appealing on the eyes.
things I do like; the border. lol :P
Hope I could help :D

The Devil Survivor text does not match the RyougaZell and Yuzu ones. It would look much better with the same or similar font, but making the two names smaller and blurring them a bit to remove the tacked-on look they currently have should suffice.

Would it be better to create some contrast and separate Mio from the background in your sig there? Her flesh is distinct alright, while her hair sort of blends in to her surroundings. Not sure if that was the effect you're looking for.

MioSig 1v2 is better, and looks more natural. It still maintains the contrast with the darker colours, but isn't as jarring and more pleasing to the eye.
MioSig 2 is good too. It's different to 1v2, so I really can't choose which one I like better.
And the new avatar is sick :) I'd say stick with 1v2, since it's better than 1, and matches the avatar more than the black/white sig, since they've both got a brown and messy background.

I like that signature, Kagemane_no_Jutsu. It gives a weird vibe of mystery and vast destruction about it. Your name seems hard to read, but other than that, it's very cool.
As for shinta|hikari's new set, it's a pleasure to look at your works. Your new avatar reminds me of how an embarassed Mio looks cute in her own way, and your new signature is good, but I liked your old one better because it had more striking contrast about it. This new one only shows so much of different colors and I think it's a little bland, in my opinion. Otherwise, it's good.

@Kage: looks pretty nice, though I don't know that character neither. Looks like a dude I saw from the Watchmen trailer I think. Still, I like your Naruto one better :)
Your new signature is good, but I liked your old one better because it had more striking contrast about it. This new one only shows so much of different colors and I think it's a little bland, in my opinion. Otherwise, it's good.
@shinta: In terms of contrast, this one is much more contrasting than the other, in both colour shades, and the differentiation between the background. As for being "bland", in my opinion, it's because this one's more simpler in design, in both colour and "foreground slapped on background" feel, due to the 2D background. The previous one (Mio1v2) had more depth, due to its richer colour choice, as well as the more complex and layered background (well, it looks like it has multiple layers anyway). This new one (Mio 3v1) looks good too, much better than Mio 2v1. I think having some colour brings life into the sig, yet keeping the simple black&white feel.
The avatar is more "generic", for lack of a better term, but that doesn't mean it's bad. As Nado said, this one really captures the embarrassed Mio, as well as her cuteness. The white background lighting makes this much more suited to your current sig than MioAvatar 1v1.
This new set, in short, feels more "light".
Ein feels a bit off. I think I'd prefer if her face lacked a bit more expression, especially by toning down the sheen in her eyes, and perhaps the mouth expression? Her body taking up the majority of the sig doesn't quite feel right neither. Maybe she's just overshadowed by the Mio sigs :p

I recognize Alice, but who's your avatar? That aside, I really like the red used here since it stands out so much. Very nice set.

Avatar is Alice too, just tinted red.

Hoho, she looks very different with that red tint. Surprising, indeed.

Very nice sig ya got there Shinta, I had to check out the series after seeing it and im not disappointed. ^^
Well, wiped my machine last week and lost every and all things photoshop. This is my first attempt in awhile without my usual 'equipment'. They all seem to have turned out very poorly to me. The text is just about the only redeeming quality in these. I got alot of practice to do.

Edit: After the looking at em, I found the reason I dont like em. Too much empty space, no wonder I never used to utilize the full 500 width limit I got.

The emptiness goes rather well with Yin I found. It gives it a desolate feel.

I agree. The Yin one looks fine as it is, although I would zoom into her face a bit more. There really isn't much to see on her shoulders. Overall, great work as usual.

I love the first and third ones. If I had to change anything, I would very slightly lessen the top space for the first one, and make the text for the third one a bit translucent. I was never a fan of DB so I will refrain from commenting on the 2nd one.

This will be rude. Vegeta looks retarded there, and I 100% blame the source for that.
I'd think you can use more vivid/harsh lighting on that one too. A soft glow doesn't make him very menacing.

Lol i noticed that one too but chose to ignore it :D
Besides by that point he's like 50 or something, so prince sounds too jovial

New sig. It is my current. Didn't add much, Just tweaked the image a bit to make it look better, and added the name. Finding the right way to place her in the sig was a pain though.

At first I couldn't think what was wrong.
It's the shadow on her leg. It makes it look wonky/wobbly/crooked.
Other than that, nice simple job of our recent favourite swordswoman.
