Aye, the Cagalli one is nice. The colour balance is intensely yellow, yet there is suddenly the red collar in the middle of it. It looks really good that way. And like Masa already said, the background and her hair fit together wonderfully.

That kind of border doesn't work with a flat background because it only oversaturates the colorful parts. With a flat background it's just a black line in the parts with low color.

BoC: I like your new wp. I really like your blending of light and dark, it seems to flow very nicely.

Zinobi: Your new sig just seems really....jarring. It's too abrupt, and the style is pretty weird.

Koko: Nice work, although personally I don't really like sigs with really busy backgrounds that much. I tend to prefer a bit more simplicity, with more focus and attention on a render.

fifafreak18: Good start for a beginner. The composition is good. Just sharpen up your Photoshopping skills so you can make the composition look nice. Don't expect to read a couple tutorials and instantly become uber l33t. It takes time and a whole lot of experimentation with different tools.

Zinobi: I'm not digging that "shadow" thing in the corner. It's an overused effect these days and unless done perfectly, it does not look good at all.

KoKo37: The first one is the same style as all your other stuff. Nothing wrong with that though. The second one I'm not liking too much because the background does not fit the render.

The hilt(?) on the left makes the whole thing a bit awkward. Try to get rid of that using clone stamp or something. Also, add more dark areas on the sides so there's more focus on the render. Text could be omitted.

Ok after some re-evaluation, I've decided to change the color of the scythe handle to reduce the "colorfulness" the picture. I've always preferred more monotonous designs.

Hmm... I rarely say outright I don't like some sig designs (not that I would post in this thread that often, but anyway), but I'm not a great fan of this new one you have made, Z. The background looks strange, and doesn't complement the render. It's true the render and the bg do have strand like figures, but still it doesn't work, as the bg looks quite clumsy. Also technically it's quite overblurred looking. And I don't like to colour and colour balance too much, either.

It's hard to say how the render would fit in on top of a more appropriate and better background, so I can't say too much about the render itself. It could work just fine under different circumstances, as it's pretty interesting.

I'm not too sure of the text placement either. It could work, once again, with another background, if there was something meaningful filling the void between the larger text portion and your nick. That void as such could be a good touch, as symmetry can be overdone, and isn't always the right way to go, just like you decided when you didn't place the text in the middle of the empty part.

Sorry to give such harsh feedback, but that's how it is in my opinion. It peaked my interest, though.

Koko, once again that's some very nice work. One of these days you should make a tutorial.

Zinobi, I know you're capable of much more than that. That render doesn't seem to lend itself to that background at all. The blending is atrocious. I don't even know if there's any hope to salvage that one. I would say just learn what you can from it, and start a new project fresh.

Not digging this one.

The "thing" on the left...I have no idea what that is or how it fits in with the sig. The white thing on the right should be extended if it's supposed to be one of those flowery border things.

Lucifus
Wed, 12-06-2006, 11:32 PM
LoL, changed the "Thing". I always somehow put something like that in my sigs. I've done it with basically every sig I've made, and people always tell me to take it out. I just never learn....:(

The text okay? And whatd'ya mean by extend the flowery border thingy?

The white stuff on the right side looks like one of those "dream borders" and should be extended towards the left if that's what you intended.

I was thinking of making it semi-transparent and going around the entire border. However...

Make the bottom part go on top of Saber, and the top part under Saber. This should give it somewhat of a "pop out" effect.

Good to see you are back in business, Lucifus. And with quite an impressive work.

After all the lashing BoC granted you, I'll just add some little opinions. The particular dome right under Saber's nose looks too big and aggressive to me. It also looks like Saber is sniffing it...

And also I'm not a great fan of the text design on the left. Nothing else wrong, but it looks strange when the first letters of the two words are blending so forcefully, yet the rest are totally opaque and white. And the D of Dreams seems to have slipped a bit far on the left from the rest of the word.

Your tring to blend em and make the render and background compliment each other.

Been awhile since I've used Photoshop.
I got lazy over the summer... and then my laptop had several problems and I had to keep re-formatting. I just recently started to make some new headers and whatnot for a few of my online profiles... and I've been working on a wallpaper. I saw the render and just had to do something with it. Too cool to confine to a sig, so I'm going for the big one. Anyways, I've been working on it for a few days now, and I wanted some input.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v376/Alhuin/wallpaper.jpg

The biggest thing I'm worried about at the moment is the hair... it's sketchy, and I haven't quite figured out what I'm going to do about it. But other than that, I kinda like how it's turning out. I've used three different brush-sets so far... and I think the colour contrast is great. But I'd like some opinions from other avid artists.

Oh, and by the way. The original wallpaper is 1024x768. Photobucket condensed it to 800x600. And also, the render, as far as I know, is not from Dragonball Z. The description said something about evil twin....

Spiegel, the more stuff you make, the better you'll get!

I like the colours and the text on your sig, but I think you need to work on the composition. Your sig should have one primary point of focus, and you should try to arrange the elements of your sig to reflect that. With your current one, your eye is drawn to the two far edges, since your renders are placed so far out. When using two renders like that, you can either place them close enough together so that your eye perceives them as one object, make one primary and the other secondary, or highlight something else in your sig as primary. A good example of the third one is Psyke's current Death Note sig, where the text jumps out, and the images spread outwards from that centre focal point, and there is also some space on the edges so that it doesn't seem too crowded or unbalanced.

I agree, I was trying to make the colors pop a bit more, but it didn't go too well. The BG could also be spiced up a bit. I like the render so if I have time I might give it another go.

Spiegel - You are really getting better. Don't worry about making an amazing sig and just enjoy it. Sooner or later you will make something that you can feel proud of.

master_me
Sat, 01-20-2007, 10:31 PM
Spi - Much better. Only problem with the first one is the stock in the background; in the middle, there's some little low quality lines from what looks like compression, probably since it was in jpeg format when you first found it I'm guessing. Try duplicating it, gaussian blurring it at like two, desaturating it, and setting it to soft light or something. I don't know if it'll work, but try something like that. I'm going off of the top of my head.

xDM - New layer, apply image, and overlay might work some magic. It's what I usually do when a sig needs a little something more. Gaussian blur never hurt either. It's a really nice sig anyway though.

To master_me:
I fooled around with it a little and what I did to the background on this version was New layer with Gaussian Blur at 2 like you said (i didn't desaturate) then I did the watercolor filter (experimenting with filters) and set to soft light.

xDM - New layer, apply image, and overlay might work some magic. It's what I usually do when a sig needs a little something more. Gaussian blur never hurt either. It's a really nice sig anyway though.
I disagree. That "technique" is overused and not everything needs to have super-high contrast. It looks fine the way it is.

Spiegel, that's looking much better! There's still something that bothers me about the first sig, but I think it has to do with the horizontal lines. I like the Kiba one. I've always been a fan of smooth and clean-looking sigs.

Zinobi, in the first one there, it's really hard to see the render and tell what it is. Maybe you were trying to achieve that sort of amalgam of render and bg, but if so, maybe use some lighting effects to highlight her face, or otherwise draw attention to something distinguishable.

I finally made a sig to fit the forums. It's not that advanced of a creation, but I still think it's a great product. It was quick and easy, and it does what it needs to do.

By the way, MSD is a band (local, from where I'm from), and Stormcrow is their new CD that was released on Feb. 2nd, 2007. A link to their site is below, should you wish to check.

I have some other projects I'm working on in Photoshop. I've been experimenting with different techniques... which is why I've been away for awhile. I haven't finished anything else yet that I'm satisfied with. Hopefully soon...

I like the background design in your wallpapers Deadfire, the only thing i have to comment on is that it needs more variation. The colors work well, especially in the second one but you need to do something with it so it gets a little variation.

Same general idea as what PSJ said. The background looks like a repeating pattern of colors, even though it's not. You need some "direction" or "focus" such as parts that fade to black.

After looking at my sig several times for several minutes i have to say that i disagree with you.

The background is maybe a bit flat but i didn't go for a flashy background this time. I just wanted a nice, easy on the eyes background. It makes it possible to focus on the render a bit more.

As for the render, i also thought it looked like i placed it right on top but after a while that feeling changes.

Thanks for the inputs though.

PSJ, I like the bg very much. Clean, yet colourful, gives a nice sweeping wind/sunbeams feel. The imbalance in the sig I think is in the lighting. Your render is lit from a source somewhere above and slightly to the left. The main light source in your bg is from the top right corner. It might be less noticeable if you could get rid of the very bright spots on his face.

second: adjusted the render size and spacing, but is it too dark?

third: i've been told my sig style is too dark, so this path is brighter

Also a border, and give your text some lovin :P

BoC, you have to much black space on the right of your sig. Either do something there or lose it. I'm not a big fan of your text eitherm in my opinion it doesn't blend in well with the sig. Other than that it looks pretty cool.

Masa: The fourth one is the best. I second everything Darkshadow said. Although i can spot a border, it doesn't do the work it should. The border makes it look alot better when you have the sig on forums and such but your border is so well hidden that it doesn't do any good. A thin black border is always a good bet if you don't know what to do.

PSJ, you touched that up very nicely. The lighting doesn't clash at all anymore, and you'd never be able to tell you altered the render. I don't really see much of a difference between 2 and 3, but I'd say 3 is probably my favourite. Great work!

Masa, I'm not really feeling that sig style.....it seems.....dingy? I dunno, maybe it's just not my cup of tea. I'm a bit at a loss as to what to suggest.

Lucifus, there's somewhat of a colour mismatch in your latest sig, and the tree stump feels out of place and generally distracting there. Maybe try to take out some of the other points of focus, or de-emphasize them a bit. I really like the concept, but it needs a bit more work before it reaches its full potential I think.

Looks alot better BoC.

Lucifus: Interesting style you got going there. I'm not feeling the Garra one but the other two were pretty nice. You got one huge problem with the text though. It doesn't fit at all in any of them. You have to blend the text together with the rest of the style otherwise it becomes the main point of focus and you don't want the text to be that.

I'm of the school that text should be simple and blended instead of extravagant. The sig should be able to go without the text. You can use an extravagant text if you don't use a render and only text. The main extravagant one is the Sasuke one, but the text is somewhat the same in the other two. The Itachi one would be great with lesser text.

Speaking of being leechlike, thanks lucifus for considering the sig job. Have you watched code geass yet though? Dont wanna spoil anything, though I doubt my sketches contain anything to that effect.

Dont replace your saber sig, it makes anything you post worth reading just because of its sheer goodness. That is probably the best sig I have ever seen (partly the reason Im asking you to help me, and probably because Saber is one of my fave characters).

It just makes use of foreground, background and main focal image contrast so well, as well as the use of the color theme sunset, which I believe suits saber the best. The text is also really cool, and I love how it sort of represent the character to a great extent..

Just cant part with it yet. Think I'll just go with another Random Image Set. I also just watched the first ep of Code Geass. Damned impressive, downloading the eps tonight, will check out therest tommorrow. I feel a Code Geass sig coming on.....

Heres another. Your post just prompted another Saber sig. Not my best work, but I really like the outcome. I think this is the 2nd Photomanip I've ever done. The render itself was really not that good, full of artifacts, but I just love the way it depicts Saber, so I did my best to smooth it out.

Which is better, normal or vector version?

Fri, 02-16-2007, 02:42 AM
Hmm... I have a bit hard time analysing this recent sig of yours, Lucifus. However, first of all I have to note the technological elements of the second one somewhat clashes with the highly natural feeling of especially the background but also with Saber, who looks less of a fighter and more of a girl in this particular render.

I'm not normally one to consider lighting differences between a far away background and the render a huge issue, as there could be numerous explanation to it, like a spotlight between the camera lighting the render part (or a flash), but somewhat that also bugs me here. The lighting on the clouds is the red of twilight, but I don't think that really shows on Saber.

Well, I'm still not saying it's bad at all. Perhaps it's just my unfounded predisposition of being suspicious of combining photos and drawn renders...

It's nice, but I don't like the look of anime stock on a 3D background. They're like entirely different worlds within a single sig. Also, I'm not sure why you put the tech in the second one >_>

Lucifus
Fri, 02-16-2007, 02:13 PM
O did I try getting the lighting to work `many` times.. When I gave it the lighting I liked..well...It looked 5x worse. The render was very poor to work with, but I'll give it another shot after I wake myself up fully. On the Code Geass sig, I know exactly who it'll be. On ep 8 atm, and must say, its pretty damned good.

It's hard doing anime renders on photo manips. You need to do alot of work on the bg for it to look good. And your text is still horrible. Try to find some tutorials on text or something. One thing to think about is try to use simple text that doesn't stick out.

nothing wrong with putting a link to your render site on here or plugging it. We don't allow solicitation or advertising for making money, but some whoring never hurt anyone, especially when it's something that would be of interested to people here. You'd do well to add a link in your sig as well.

This was a gift sig for a friend, Tree. He kept complaining that I've made so many other people gift sigs and not one for him, so I made this in about twenty minutes.
I've gotten a lot of hate for this, so try me.

I'd also like to point you all in the direction of my sig, where you'll find a link to a (truly, less than unique) renders site. What's so (less than) unique about it?
In short, a clutterless gallery. You won't find a halo render back to back with a poorly cut stock of Gwen Stefani. Halo renders are with halo renders, and badly cut renders serve no purpose seeing as we don't allow duplicates. The gallery was made by our resident coder/scripter, who put down the other hundred ideas Tree and I came up with, so he decided to finish up the one he'd been working on and have us use that. It'll be up by the end of the week, and people can start uploading their renders.
Really, you should all check it out.

Quality over quantity.

The renders are most definatly quality. I had like 1/4 of them already but the rest blew me away.

@Lucifus - Never bevel the border of a sig.
@BoC - For real. Still, we've been gathering renders since December and these aren't just quick cuts. Granted, about 200 renders are Rockman related since Tree's old site was based on Rockman PSDs >_>

My first ever sig, let me know what you think of it and any improvements I can do to it:

I'm a little surprised :(

The render is too sharp for the background, and also way too low quality. Its edges don't blend well either, so it really sticks out. I also hate the chrome effect in the background.

I like the background a lot, actually. I think it works well with the sig. Just soften up the render or at least some parts of it.

^yea I think the render is too sharp for the bg...but I didn't use any chrome or filter effect for the bg or any c4d.

and what are you so suprised about? It was my first sig in a while using anime and I handmade everything on there except for the render.

Dunno. I've kind of always seen you as like, easily one of the best here. This one just kind of felt like there wasn't much flow or anything, and just a little empty.

Stupid little vector wallpaper. It goes well with my current skin on windows, though.

I like that sig, Z. But like somebody said at irc, get rid of the letter. Right now it's screaming: "I don't belong here!"

I'm not too sure of those vertical lines on the left, either, but it's not like they would really bother me, and I deem they are a part of the vision you had in mind while making the sig.

New sig, using the only render from DF's pack that I actually like.

New stuff. Nothing amazing.

Quick wallpaper. It's simplish.

Decent photo manip.

I think the text ruins the wallpaper, and the photomanip is just too small.

But its good that your starting to work with larger canvases. Keep at it.
