I see what you're trying to do there. The final result isn't something that I'm used to, but only time will tell if it's something I can get used to.

I've actually already done that, which is why they're slightly brighter than the original image. Maybe I just didn't do it right... but I was seeing if there was another way.

Be cool if that red sword looking thing.... shield maybe... was also glowing. Low opacity brushing 0hardness set to something good light throw some filters on it for perfect color/brightness, boom, sick glow.

@Arch: I tried not to mess with the original so much, so the texture you're seeing is probably from that. I just added some overlays, smudged it a bit, gradients... tried my own version of the glow on the eyes. Slapped on the border at the end. Overall, the techniques I used were simple and quick, but I tried several other things before settling on the current outcome.

@Sapph: Thanks. I sharpened the image because I didn't like how blurry it was. Glad to see it was the right move.

@Kage: It is a sword... I thought about trying to make it glow, but I wanted the focus to fall more on the eyes. I actually darkened around the bottom edge of the sword for that reason. I may try it out to see how it looks, so thanks for the suggestion.

Can't you just copy/paste the two images together? Or does the shading look off enough that you would see a transition? In that case, just grab the eye-slit part only and position it over a layer that has the original with the good sword texture.

I completely forgot about working on that. My hard drive failed a few weeks ago, so I was without a computer. After getting it working again, I've been intent on acquiring all the anime I wasn't able to save from the crash.

As far as the texture change, make sure your image-hosting site didn't do it. I stopped using Photobucket because of that, and I couldn't figure out why it was doing it. Imageshack does it sometimes when the "resize quality" button, or whatever, gets ticked (which happens randomly). I can tell something happened to it, cause the border is blurred/lower quality as well.

I was able to save my .psd's, so I can send you that one if you prefer.

in german its "abwedeln", I use gimp, I bet photoshop has the same tool

I think your image was resized after uploading. I can't even tell what the circled tool is. I haven't reinstalled PS yet anyways though, so I can't try anything out. I might try running the image by an English version of Gimp and see I can make the connection, but it won't be anytime soon. Lack of motivation coupled with higher priorities. I finally got around to reinstalling PS. I lost all of my presets (and fonts/brushes for that matter), so I tried to make due with what I could remember. After working with this one for awhile, I've developed mixed feelings. Sometimes when I look at it, it looks fine; other times it seems too washed out, or too bold, or the lighting is too harsh. I don't know if it's just because I'm tired, or if I really do need to work on these issues.

Shinta, I'm loving your new set. There's just something about "dat ass", and in the context of the episode I assume the image is referring to, I can actually see the bounce. I feel like the ava should be positioned a bit higher though, if that makes sense. To where her eye is above the horizontal half-mark. Right now it looks even with it, so it shouldn't be that much of a shift. Just my opinion though, I love it either way.

And I have to ask this, even though I'm sure he doesn't check this thread, but Marik, buddy, I have to know where you got your new ava from. It's kinda hot!

The argument is irrelivant IMO. If you're afraid to make big sigs then there's a psychological limit there anyway. In any case a limit will be made sooner or later, either self-imposed or systemically.

It's supposed to imply that she is running to him. In all fairness though, the background had the guy already, I just tried to incorporate it for effect. The girl is the only render, but I had to do some shading to get it to blend. The focus should just be the blue... don't ask the symbolism between blue eyes and a blue umbrella, but I thought it looked cool regardless. I actually think I like this one better than my first one, even though I do really like that render.

Would blurring the dude make it any better? If he's in the distance and the girl's in the foreground, then having some depth perception via a slight loss of focus there would enhance that feel.

The problem with the dude is that he stands out too much, and a bit contributor to that is that there's no "rain" in front of him.

In all honesty, the text is from a song by Sonic Syndicate, and it seemed like it fit the theme of Haruhi, but after letting it sit for a day, I don't think I like it either. I am quite fond of using the different fonts though... I might rehash that idea in another piece. The "second link" you mentioned is just the same tag without the text. Not sure why it didn't show up for you; they're uploaded to the same place.

I went ahead and used the textless version as my new tag. As for the ava; I'm using this for now because I couldn't find anything better that matched the tag. I spent hours last night searching. If I finally come across something that compares, I'll replace it, but until then, this is what I have.

I agree with Arch about the render. It does not look like Haruhi at all, even with the signature ribbons. Swapping it out with another one would make a fine sig. The colour theme and background are nice.

I don't mind the quote. Sig quotes usually have meaning to the one who uses them, not the one who reads them, so I don't think you should let other people influence you on that.

@shinta: The whole point of me creating the tag was the render, so I'm definitely not changing it. Maybe I'm not looking at it as hard as you all, cause it looks like her to me. Her breasts might be a little larger, but that's not exactly a bad thing... >_>. As far as the quote, I didn't let Archie's comment influence me; it's from a badass song by a badass band. I just felt it wasn't the best thing for this particular piece in the end. I've been having trouble in the text dept. anyways on a lot of recent pieces. I need to play around some more.

@Bill: I'm glad you like the avatar! After seeing it in action through posts, I kind-of like the contrast between it and the tag, so I might just end up keeping it. I went through more than 3000 images and couldn't find anything anyways.

I'm inclined to disagree. It's not really that the quality has plummeted, just the quantity. I mean, it's not like the few people that are continuing this thread are getting worse. Sure, some styles are becoming dated, such as mine, but that doesn't mean it's bad. However, in an effort to try out some different settings and resources that I'm not used to, I threw this together:

The avatar and the sig feature the same character. She is Mikasa Ackerman, and is in fact, female. Her design is actually pretty masculine so your impression is understandable.

I hardly ever use male characters in my sets.

EDIT: Have you tried lowering the Haruhi avatar on your sig? Maybe it will look more like Haruhi if you show more ribbon and less boobage. I think the top of her head being out of the image is making her head appear distorted.

I am absolutely in agreement with Alhuin on the quality vs. quantity standpoint. No one can deny the least 20 pages aren't far better than what came in the past. The only trouble is alot of it can't be considered 'Art' as opposed to just perfected 'technique'.

I think everyone praised the BG and the colours. Only the render was brought up as negative. It is not even just about the render being different from the anime art style. I find that the specific drawing style is simply not that good, and that in no way reflects on Al's skills.

The value of art is relative anyway, you can't analyse objectively. All i'm saying is that I personally don't like that signature, particularly that render.

Spent the first 30 minutes messing with blending options and adjustment levels.... just doing the old boring shit I used to always do. The recent work with banners got me motivated to make another tag. I tried to incorporate a lot of new styles and effects that I learned while working on the banners. It may seem similar to my current style, but there are a lot of subtle things underneath.

Anyways, I made two versions, one with text and one without. I'm leaning towards the version without because that's what I'm used to making, but I really wanted to start including my name again. Maybe some ideas will help.

The "blue lines" is just a resource image I found somewhere and used. Changed size, opacity, color, etc. though. I've long since stopped using brushes. I never had much luck with them honestly. Maybe I should try 'em again, but they'd have to be really good.

I tried to make the avatar color scheme match the tag, but no matter what I did it didn't look right. This was the closest I could get. The tag is supposed to feel empty. It conveys how empty and alone the world is for her.

If I can make something better I will, but I've been searching for material since last Saturday and come up with a whole lot of nothing.

Well if there's something that could be wrong with it, I think it's the lack of a clear focus which ends up making the vertical set look like a picture from a bigger scene rather than a piece of art in its own right. The focus is neither Homura nor Madoka, and Madoka seems to be looking towards the light source (so should we?).

Unfortunately the render itself was cut like that (Madoka's head missing). The only reason I went vertical was to include both Madoka and Homura, but I wasn't really sure where the focus needed to be. I was actually going for more of a "scene" like you mentioned, though not necessarily cut from something bigger. I just thought it was too beautiful of a render to not be used.

I've been experimenting outside of my comfort zone, and I came up with a lot of failed creations, but I think this one turned out fairly well. I also think I've gotten much better with text, though I want to find a better font for my name.

As always, critiques are encouraged. I get better ideas from you guys than any graphics site I try posting to.

Also, I know it's incredibly late, but I like the Hec set Arch... I just think it would be better if they matched.

The only thing I can critique on is that "ALHUIN" is a little hard to read there. Is it because the bottom part is shadowed? It's not a biggie and doesn't really take anything away from the sig, so you don't have to change it.

There is a gradient effect on the text, and it used to be much darker... I tried making it lighter without removing the gradient, and that's the best I could come up with. I'm fairly certain it's mostly because of the font. I didn't want to use the same font as "Deadpool", but I still think a thicker font would work best, and allow the colors to stand out more. I'll probably scour dafont.com for a couple of hours tomorrow.

There's also a slight outer-glow effect, to make the text pop out. I could try removing that and see if it helps.

as for the background, some more contrast between her colors and those in the background would be nice. Her hair is white-blue-ish, and then the most of the background is also in a bright blue-tone. She kinda gets swallowed up in those similar colors. So, the actual contents of thr background are fine, but maybe you could change the colors to something darker. Black, wine red, a bit of yellow, something like that. Would also fit Pitou´s menacing aura. :P

I found an image with more complex shading, but it does not look much like Pitou at all, and isn't nearly as sexy as that one.

Also it is unfair to compare it to my sig, since Soukou Akki Muramasa has one of the best if not the best art in a visual novel (and I play a lot of them).

I'll see what I can do in making the BG colors different. I actually intentionally chose a similarly colored one to make her blend in instead of stick out like a sore thumb due to her thicker lines.

EDIT: I tried changing the BG color to redder hues but it looked horrid. This is a different take on the BG, really simple dressing room curtains in red, since you seem to like red.

The official size is 500x150pxls for new sigs. That announcement was made on the last page. Sig-prize-winners could use 500x160pxls according that as well, but I'll trial 500x175 to see how that works out.

If you were a winner and can make use of that, go for it. That's the point of the trial.

I've tried to get some sort of contest going for a couple years now with Luci, but, like Rhyl said, there would be limited participation. Also, I do believe that anyone that would participate (excluding me) already has the increase size in sigs.

I am completely against the 500x150 rule. It is simply very hard to make good sigs with such a canvass. A lot of good pictures get wasted because they don't fit that format. A slightly more squarish size would be better. I am not saying 500x200 or 500x250, but 400x200 or 400x250 should be allowed. Uniform signatures is almost an oxymoron lol.

I like it. The avatar and sig match perfectly. If I had to add a suggestion, it would be to add black bars to the avatar as well to make it match the sig even more. A little bit more brightness in the avatar should have such an effect as well.

I find it interesting how similar in structure our current sig sets are despite the large variance in style and tone.

I had actually been wanting to do a "laying down almost naked" style tag for awhile, but I could never come up with something I liked. I can't remember if it was because of you or not though... >_>

Anyways, I was thinking that the avatar needed to be lightened a bit as well, so I will probably work on that later on tonight or tomorrow. I'm usually not a fan of the thicker black lines on top and bottom of an avatar, but I'll try it out. If I don't like the outcome, I'll probably just remove them from the tag itself.

Lastly, I'm not sure what you mean by "similarity". I'm guessing the anime your set is from is centered around characters similar to those of Chuunibyou?

Nah, it's about the structure of the sig and avatar. The orientation of the sig, and the crop area of the avatar are very similar. If you consider the guy's head as reference, even the sig has similar structure, only with a loli in the middle instead of boobs and naked abs.

Alright, I took your advice on the avatar. It was a bitch trying to brighten it without fucking everything else up, because of the source images I'm using, but I think I pulled it off quite nicely. I had also forgotten to sharpen the image a bit, so the definitely helps. I still don't know how I feel about the thicker border on top/bottom, but for now I'll try it out.

If you watch the show, the sig text is also word play on Dere Ki (Dere time/mode), since the image has a dere Kobeni and a tree (Ki).

The original light source for the image is on the top of her head. I rotated the image 90 degrees to fit the sig template, so the light source went all wrong.

Still, we're not looking at that image for the lighting.
