Wow, very nice guys! Big improvements from both of you! Pochii, I dunno if I'm liking the glow around Yuna. There might be a better way to make your render the focus, but not make it stick out quite so much. I agree with Phoenix that some lighting might do that. AnimePunk, I'd suggest adding a border maybe. These are definitely the best yet from both of you.

aznimperialx, I like your style. The hand-drawn feel of your sigs is different than most things we see around here, and I like it a lot. For all of them, I'd say add a border of some sort. In terms of which I like best, I'd have to say the first one. The second one, I dunno, I just don't find it visually attractive, and the last one seems really empty. The third one, well, I'm not a fan of squished images. It's always better to keep an image with the same aspect ratio, imo. The other thing I would suggest you change is the text. It just....doesn't seem to fit. I with I could give more concrete suggestions, but I'm sill kindof a photoshop noob too and sometimes have trouble articulating things in this strange new artistic realm.

But anyways, keep with this style, I think you have a lot of potential. These sigs definitely have the potential to be fabulous. Put some more time into them, and see what you can do.

AnimePunk, even though abstract isn't my favourite, your new one looks pretty good. It's kinda confusing and chaotic, and very purple i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif

@aznimperialx: Personally, I'm not a big fan of the extreme drop-shadow effect. A defined and far off drop shadow implies harsh light. Also, having a drop shadow appear above something gives it an unnatural effect, since light usually casts downwards from above.

I think you should try taking the sig you're using now, remove the drop shadow, and use a stroke color that matches the red (or remove the stroke and change the text color to match the red). Then you can play with the positioning/size of the text to blend into the image, rather than pop out of it.

And like kitkat said, try putting a thin border around your sig too. Maybe try the same red.

AnimePunk, you have improved a lot! I dunno how much more advice I can give you, except maybe to work on your text more. Try downloading more fonts to try and match each sig with a font that really seems to suit the style and theme.

AnimePunk: Yeah, you should try to work on your blending a little bit more. Also, the left side seems a little flat and blank. Try giving it some more depth and contrast to make it a little more visually interesting.

GLS: I love the simplicity of your sigs. Personally, I much prefer clean simple sigs to really cluttered ones. I'd say it's not your best work, but a nice sig nonetheless. The avatar however is awesome. I like it a lot.

Phoenix: I LOVE THAT ROCK LEE SIG!!!! Wow, it really looks great. Very nicely done!! The only thing I don't really like about it is the lens flare on the left. It looks kinda out of place and detracts from the overall effect. Everything else though....the blending is great, the flow is beautiful, and it all just fits. This is my favourite from you so far.
The other one I feel kinda meh about. It feels kinda disjointed and spliced oddly.

As for the Lee sig, I think you do need something there to draw attention to Lee since the other side of your sig is so bright, but a lens flare just seems really out of place. Maybe play around with it and find some other way of drawing attention over there. Or even use some effects on your flare to make it less orderly and spherical, y'know?

ha...well i pointed it out because alot of people get dependant on the lens flare.
In this case, it stands out because you have some artistic brush rendering on the background to give it a slightly rippled-stroke effect, but the sun has no such texture on it.

There is a bit to much black in the first one and a bit to much white in the second one. In the first one the render looks over contrasted and in the second one the render is badly cut and doesn't look too good overall. There is room for improvement but given the time you have been doing sigs it looks good. Just keep working and you will improve. That's one of the hardest things to do, keep the interest up even when the sigs doesn't turn out the way you wanted them to.

The idea is nice but the background lacks depth which makes the middle very empty. Keep brushing the background and then maybe stick some text in the middle. You could also try having the renders bigger, also if you haven't noticed, the hair on the left Ichigo is cut off.

@Noid: Your sig is really overcontrasted. Try to make your render a little more natural looking. If you do colour adjustment, do it to match the colours of your render and background to each other. Also, since there is so much empty space featured in your sig, mix up your brushing a bit and make that empty space a bit more visually interesting. Plus, a border is always nice.

@Lazykid: The way that I do font is just trial and error. I download a whole bunch of fonts at once, then type my text on my sig, and try out different ones that I think would work. Granted, I still suck at text, but the only way to learn is by just trying and doing.
Oh, and I like your current sig.

@AnimePunk: You want to be really careful when you're cutting renders. Even a little extra time spent being more precise will make your sig look heaps better.

@T-S: Keep working at it. That sig has a lot of potential, but you need to put some more work into the bg, and add some text to it as well.

@Kage: I like how you keep picking up new styles. Everything is looking very nice. The only one I don't care too much for is the 4th. It just seems kindof bland.

Alright, and now for me, I made this one over the weekend. I feel a bit meh about it, but it's my first time making a sig with no render. The text is still bothering me. I've tried a lot of different things, but I still can't make it look like it really fits.

I prefer the second one. Better foreground/background blending and I don't like the text on his finger.
Also, I'm assuming that blue glow was added in. I think it might look alot better with it removed altogether. It sorta clashes with the color scheme.

PS. If you want some bonus points, try to make the "ANIMEPUNK" text in the second one blend with his shirt to make it look like part of the design. Alot of you guys focus so much on all the other compositional elements that you just half-ass slap some text wherever just to wrap it up. The usage of text should contribute to the composition, not be an afterthought.

I stopped watching/reading around anime ep. 90 but took up the manga again about a week ago.

You know I'm a bitch for lighting out of you PSJ i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif

And of course this is no exception. Make the light directional, I suggest a soft brush very low opacity and brush white and balck in the different areas where the lighting is and isnt. Then mess with the layer opacity. Also, this bg feels like it needs something besides just brushing. Try finding some c4d off DevArt to make the bg more detailed. If the render's bg isn't in .png and it's just black, set it to linear dodge. And when using C4D remember layer masking is your best friend, just use a soft black brush on the mask and take off pieces of the render you think hurts the sig more then it helps it.

well I do use some c4d abstract renders for helping with the bg, which usually has a color of its own, but most of the time I just change it anyway. So one of the ways I like to color is to just take your render, duplicate it, do a couple radial blurs on it, and set it to overlay and mess with the opacity and all that.

bah, I guess I'm in for another lesson...

If you want to have a variety of colors try this:

When you brush your white brushing you can make a color balance layer and thats just fine. BUT if you want to change that specific layer you go to IMAGE-ADJUSTMENTS- then theres a whole bunch of the things that you'll find on your layers pallette right there. But now if you try to just color your white brushed layer, it wont work. WTF! But after more experiance came across the mighty Linear Dodge layer blending mode (on the layers pallette where you find overlay and soft light). So BEFORE you brush the white, make a new layer, set it to linear dodge, fill with BLACK then do your brushing. Then afterwards you can do the image-adjustments-color balance. But be careful cause once you do it you can't go and brush some more and then do another color balance layer without making the layer already color balanced more saturated making it look shitty.

If you understood that, my hat is off to you, and you deserve to move on to the next round.

I agree that your first looks better than the second. The problem is that Sora is already so contrasted, that adding light to the bright parts like his arms makes them way too bright. What you need is to light him very selectively, so you just pick out the dark parts a bit more. I think even having an omni light right on his head to highlight his hair a bit would help a lot for making him more recognizable in your sig.

@ LaZyKiD: Pretty nice, but once again too bright. Try brushing some black layers over your background and putting them on overlay to add some more depth and tone down the overpowering brightness. It'll also help Sora to stand out more. Also, what is that red bit at the top middle?

You can definitly make that better, start by choosing a diffrent Vivi render, then go with more brushing in the background and you should work with the text a bit, make it more subtle also get rid of that red and black thing on the right.

Kitkat: Something about the thick strokes of the character combined with the thin details of the background seem to clash to me. That's the type of character render that would be tough to make a good sig with unless you specifically made a more simplified bg....like mine

Nice on KitKat. I agree with Assert about the background... and the text seems too thick... hard to make out the letters (the "a" and "r" at least). Other than that, it's lookin good.

I've spent the past few days working (on and off) on my Shadow sig, using the advice you mentioned Kage, and still can't get it to look better than it is. So... I'll probably just keep it as it is. I need to find some more abstract renders to use as backgrounds.... Which, speaking of your advice Kage; you mentioned copying the layer, doing a few radial blurs, and then messing with the opacity. You also mentioned you changed your colours around to get multicoloured. My question is this: Do you use Image>Variations to change the colours or Image>Colour Balance? I've tried both... and done what you said to do... and it doesn't work. Any colour I notice looks like crap. Care to elaborate?

1st sig: pretty cool, imo byakuya needs to be stretched out a bit, and the text needs to be a little darker and brighter

2nd sig: better then the first, although there is some parts from the original render around the hair on the left, nice text selection

3rd sig: the best of the three, I would say to change the text that goes with the style(try some opacity crap).

If you were going to use any of them, use the third one and if you don't I will KILL YOU!!!

Yeah... I had it like that at first. It just seemed too... cluttered to me. Towards the left, where the fireball and bg are seperated by the black line... that's where I felt the problem was. So, I jsut inverted it and ended up with that pink. I also forgot to lower the opacity on the text... I think it would look better faded instead of bold like it is.

You've made a lot better. The grid pattern doesn't go with the rest of the sig at all, and you have too many lightsources. What I mean is that you have her left side darkened but theres a light source coming from the top left, and one bottom left. Bg needs some depth too. Been reading the posts on how to make sigs. It got me interested, so I tried it out last night. I have no artistic talent at all, and it was my first time using photoshop for anything. Any advice/tips/comments would be welcome and appreciated. Thanks.

Yay, another person with no artistic talent! *high five* I'm right there with ya, dude. But I'm glad you decided to give photoshop a try. It's really fun.

As for your sig, it's pretty good for a first try. I'll give you some general comments. First off, your Temari render is cut off on the right side. Generally that's a no-no. When you have a render that's cut off like this, it's best to either place it at the side, or in some way hide the fact that it's cut off. For the concept you're using in your sig, it might be better to go with a different render that is more complete. Secondly, you might want to do some colour adjustment to Ino and Hinata to make the colours and tones match Temari more. You want to make it look like they're all in the same picture, so you want similar skin tones. Thirdly, is there a border on that? You might want to make it more visible, to frame your sig better. Especially with one this simple, I think a border is essential.

I'm sure other people more talented in the arts than I will have more suggestions for you. In the meantime, I would suggest finding some tutorials and just going through them. It's a great way to learn the different features and effects you can achieve with photoshop. I hope to see more of your work here in the future!

Ero-fan:
1) Use consistent renders. the degree of blur and tint on the characters vary too much. Temari is way too blurry, Tsunade's outlines are narrower than the others due to her being shrunk more, and Ino seemed a bit more faded. Check out NM's image enhancing tutorial (originally stolen from me).

2) More creative placement. It's a good idea to follow the rule of thirds, where if you imagined your image chopped into thirds horizontally and vertically, placing the main focus of interest on those imaginary lines is more interesting than dead in the center or to the sides.

3) Make your characters flow with the background, rather than stand out from it. Look around and you'll see alot of examples where people have blended their characters with the background.

Most important rule with renders: NEVER disproportionally scale an image.

Cool, I'll have to give that a try when I get some time. Maybe this weekend or like monday when I have off from work. I tried rendering them myself, and I kinda rushed it. Prob will be easier if I use just one char with multiple pics? I also need to find a new background, even I am starting to hate that background. Btw, what photoshop program and version do you all use? I've been using Adobe Photoshop CS ver8.
Edit: Where the hell is the option located to add a border to an image? I can't seem to find it, but I could be lookin in the wrong place...

EDIT: Ero-fan, to add a border, first make a new layer. Then go to Select -> All. Now go to Edit -> Stroke. Then fill in the color that you want and the size of the stroke. Most people usually use a black stroke, 1 pixel.

Yeah, I should, I just haven't found a single image i want to render and use alone yet. I gotta rewatch the anime and get some more screenshots.
BTW, rendering takes fucking forever, and my border wouldn't show up till i increased it to 2 pixels. I need to find better backgrounds too.

@Itachi: I don't know what you're talking about, I think it looks pretty tight. The only thing I would have a problem is with the colors you used behind Shadow, they seem too blunt and plain, if you could touch those, and maybe Shadow up a bit, then I think it would look awesome. i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif

Anyway i'll comment some.

Pochii: You need to work on the bg just experiment a bit. You also need a better quality render and may i suggest you size him up a bit, less legs and more upper body and head.

Noid: Those look really cool but i think they need som work. The first one is to empty on the right side and lacks background work. The second one looks weird with the space themed background, unless he is pounding on a glowing spaceship i think a background change would do the PSP bg some good.

Animepunk: The cube formations are cool and the text is decent but the rest of the background is poor quality and doesnt really fit with the cube formation. The render is also of bad quality, you need to find a better one.
