My bitch:

Out of nowhere, a developed a cyst (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyst) on the inside of my mouth, in front of my second left incisor. It's grown to big that it get caught whenever I try to eat now. The doctor's given my some ointment/cream to put on it for a week. If it settles down and goes away by itself I'd be grateful. If not, then I'll have to do surgery and get it cut off.

Ointment for the inside of your mouth? I wonder how you're going to keep from ingesting it and getting poisoned.

I used to bite the inside of my cheek, until the one time I cut it open good and it got infected. It pussed up and for two weeks everytime I swallowed I sucked down some pus too. It was gross but didn't taste half bad.. It eventually healed up on its own.

Pantene shampoo gave me three sebaceous cysts on my scalp in college. One of them was small and dissolved away over 3 or 4 months after I switched to another shampoo. Another one was easy to see popping out of the top of my hair right near the front of my head, and I ended up excavating it with an xacto knife and some tweezers. It was pretty gross, with a leathery fluid sac about 3/4 of an inch in diameter.

I still have the third one, on the back of my head buried in my hair. I think it's been getting smaller very slowly for the last 4 or 5 years, so I'm hoping it is slowly dissolving too... but who knows? Good reason to keep long hair though.

I just got my insurance card for my new job yesterday. First time I've been insured in like 6 years. Thinking of finding a pcp and asking about removal options.

I'll soon be without health insurance for the first time in almost 10 years and I'm nervous about it. Not that I'm accident prone or injury prone, but Murphy's law kicks in at the worst times in my life.

If the cyst on the back of your head is a pre-existing condition, will your new insurance policy cover its removal? Cysts suck.

Work sucks right now.... very badly.

i've been helping all the remote users for the past 6 months w\ any problems they've had and have done a good job of it, most problems being connection related... if you cant use your cell phone because there is no signal, how are you going to vpn in and remote desktop w\ that same lack of connection?

anyhow... i got an email last week that they were bringing in a ''consultant'' to look at our problems which this was caused by the one girl last week not being able to connect...

she sent emails whining to other people before calling me, then she called me and we got her going... then later i get this email that she had sent that then got forwarded to 3-4 other people including the owner and then the talk of this ''consultant''

I started revamping my resume shortly after that... kind of feel both insulted and un-needed.

the frustration is also compounded w\ the purchase of a shitty made in china camera set of uber low quality and then i get somehow volunteered to set up said shitty camera system which has a range of maybe 20 feet (wireless) i dont even think its 802.11 wireless... i think its 1980's - 1990's RF wireless. www.x10.com.... seriously, goto the site... why would you buy anything from such a crappy website.

If the cyst on the back of your head is a pre-existing condition, will your new insurance policy cover its removal? Cysts suck.

Pre-existing condition only applies if you've seen a doctor about it in the last six months before you enrolled for insurance (source! (http://healthinsurance.about.com/od/faqs/f/preex.htm)). Since I haven't seen a doctor at all in like ... 4 years, I don't have any of those! OTOH, if I had just been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, and saw a doctor 2 months ago to get diagnosed, they'd be able to reject my claims for that expensive but life-saving chemo, surgery and radiation therapy until 6 months had passed.

Oh, and new bitching for the day: Virt-manager. It's a redhat tool to manage xen virtual machines, and for some reason it's being a giant raging bitch to me today. I'm giving up and going home, because after hammering on it for 4 hours, I got it to work once, and then when I took the same steps to recreate the success, it failed.

The last two days have been particularly frustrating at work... between bad kickstart scripts and bad install cds and bad media and failing disks and failing memory and giant purchasing runarounds, and now this unreliable xen stuff. I feel like I've accomplished nothing so far this week, because of all the dead ends I keep hitting.

Oh, I've got more to bitch about, too!

I got my new basically whole computer yesterday. Set it up, installed windows, updated, no problems all around. In fact, things seemed to be going just a little ... too well.

Then I installed SupCom to see how the performance was (sort of as a baseline to compare to my old system), and the system started randomly hanging for a couple seconds at a time. After some debug work, ended up checking the system event log, and found out that, of all things, the brand-freaking-new hard drive is bad.

Yeah, how great is that? Seriously.

Must have been user error then ;) .

My bitch today is about console games ported to PC. Why do companies make so little effort when porting a game? I'm playing Assassin's Creed on the PC with a mouse and keyboard and the controls are obnoxiously unintuitive and sometimes wonky. I don't even like this game enough to splurge on the $20 microsoft wireless receiver that would let me use an xbox360 controller on the PC. I just don't think it's worth it.

darkshadow
Thu, 07-24-2008, 04:09 PM
its the same with GoW pc, not only is the game riddled with crashing bugs, the game actually plays tons better with my wired controller, i didn't even try assassin's creed with mouse and keyboard, but it played pretty darn perfect with the controller.

Plus the controller is also pretty great for grid, and a lot of other games i tried it with, it even played pretty well with crysis.
Maybe you should just get the wireless receiver, kinda for future games or so, i know at least assassin's creed will play a whole lot better.

No one wants to be involved in our lover's quarrels, Sapphire, so let's get back on topic.

Why is it that game releases are always on the horizon, never right when you're finished with the last batch of must-play games? It's particularly painful when you don't have access to online games like CoD4, WoW, CSS, because then you can at least play those until the next big title is out. Right now nothing is due out until August 31 when Mercenaries 2 comes out. September and October both have multiple big name titles, but what am I supposed to do for all of August?

darkshadow
Sat, 07-26-2008, 10:47 AM
Find some other game you never finished, cause september - february will be big titles only, especially october and november.

Abdula

Animeniax
Sat, 07-26-2008, 01:08 PM
Nope, since the 2KSports NFL game for 2005 was so much better than Madden 05, but EA bought the exclusive license from the NFL. So I'm boycotting their game, which is usually subpar anyway. Madden 07 on the Xbox was weak.

I wonder if you even have a list.

I've been applying my ointment on the cyst twice daily, as directed. It's been slowly going down, and it was almost non-existent, save a bit of loose skin. Then today, I had a quiche and a chicken pie for lunch, and during that, it popped right up to being almost as large as it was last week.

Fuck, what's up with that? And I'm supposed to see the doctor tomorrow to show him if it's healed at all. I'm thinking of not booking the appointment tomorrow and just keep up the treatment for another week and see how that goes. All while keeping away from quiches and pies.

Seriously though, why chicken pie. WTF.

(I had a quiche tonight, and it seemed to make it worse. So maybe it's the quiche)

Well I went out to eat this weekend and everything was fine until it came time to pay. They claimed that their credit card machine was not working so I said that the carbon copy alternative reciept was alright (They charge it when the machine is working). I was worried about it then and rightfully so. I look at my online statement this morning, while at work, and come to find that I have five charges other than the price for the meal on my account. Totaling in an extra $56.88 out of my account. Now I have to wait a few days to get everything in order as the restaurant in question is approximately 280 miles away...

Sodas are bad for you so it's for the best that you quit. Maybe try tea or wine or just plain water.

I'm trying a new eating routine to lose some weight. I used to get a full plate for every meal and wolf it down in one sitting, leaving me over-full and lethargic for an hour after. Now I eat half of the meal, wait a couple hours, then eat the other half. It's more in line with the recommended 6 smaller meals a day that they recommend if you want to increase your metabolism and get in shape. Only problem is the urge to eat the other half soon after eating the first half, and that the half portions are still too large.

I always assumed people in those weights simply float away from earth, like helium, or stuff.

lolwut, so 80kg is anorexic to you? o_O, anorexia nervosa is more along the lines of 30-40kgs.

Boxing weight divisions go as low as 47.6 kg.

Well, people in sports can be anorexic to reach weight requirements. Just because you don't look it doesn't mean you aren't.

Now, people can just be small and have fast metabolisms.

Another bad day at the gym today. Whenever I have problems, it's always on Chest day. One week I'm doing perfectly fine and making improvements, and the next I'm struggling with less than half the previous weight. Eating and sleep cycles affect me more than I thought.

You should chip in with a bunch of other friends. Then you guys can save a bit of cash, and also get him/her something that's actually useful/valuable. Plus, with more minds on the job, one of you should hopefully think of something that your friend actually wants/needs.

Yeah. I always thought only kids consider it very important to get presents from their friends. Older people will just appreciate it if you remember them, depending on the person as some don't care at all (I totally stopped caring pretty early). Some round numbers like 50 or 70 years will make a difference, though. Sounds like a pretty superficial social circle if you are trapped into getting gifts for your friends every year at an older age, against your will.

I don't even give things to my brothers, why would I give something to a friend? (Example: didn't buy presents for the weddings of 3 different friends).

I usually just give my nephews things. Toys for the youngest (3) and videogames the eldest (7). I also give money for my parents (alongside flowers in my mother's case). But my two brothers and my sister? nothing.

Shipping (from online shopping) in Canada sucks balls. I ordered something from Directcanada on Thursday of last week and it only arrived in Toronto today. Even though it's here, it wasn't delivered. It'll probably be delivered tomorrow, which means I will receive it on Thursday since I won't be home for the delivery guy tomorrow and will need to go to the post office on Thursday to get it.

It normally takes 3-4 days for ground shipping when I order stuff. I don't understand what the delay is this time. I've used Canada Post in the past and it wasn't this slow. This is complete bullshit. 8 days to receive a package? At least the shipping was free...

People in the states are lucky to have places like Newegg where shipping is blazing fast and doesn't cost an arm and leg.

You live in a very small country, DS. No wonder everything works like a clockwork.

That being said, the post works pretty efficiently here as well. Rarely have I needed to wait anything for more than a few days, normally not even that. The bad thing is they raise prices every year, but I guess that's unavoidable when the greedy oil barons keep raising the oil prices so... greedily and it's a transportation business.

so, this guy i work with and I were talking last week about how cheap amd stock was and i thought it would be a great idea to buy some. my coworker said he uses etrade so i figured i'd open an account. I did, and i moved money into the account last friday. since then the stock has gone up from about $4.50 to $5.60 today.

when i goto buy the stock it says i can't buy anything under $10... i'm confused so i send them messages which prove to be a waste of time.

So today i try again because the initial week is over... wrong !

this lady is telling me that i could wire money to my account but that i cant use the money that is in my account that i sent last week until the 21st at which point the stock is likely going to be to a point where i dont want to buy it anymore.

wtf? my call got cutoff right after i said " so, you're telling me that if i wired money today i could use it, but i can't use the money that is already in my account?" seriously... wtf?

My job's been insane the last 3 weeks or so, and it continues to be insane now. It'd be great conversation material with other hardcore nix nerds, but the only other hardcore nix nerds I know are the people I work with, and they're right there with me.

Lately I've been finding that even the highest level devs at work don't play on my level for systems and software development stuff. Like, I'll address a problem they're having by telling them what's wrong and how I fixed it, and from technical leads and lead developers on three different teams in the last two weeks, I've gotten responses that amounted to "I don't really know what you just said, but it sounds good!"

I love my current job, with which I'm in general happier than I've ever been with a job in my more than a decade of working, but it sort of bothers me sometimes that I know at most 3 people within a decade of my age either way who can keep up with a significant subset of the topics I deal with on a day-to-day basis. But I guess that's why the job pays as well as it does ...

I will no longer feel guilty that I was born who I am.
I don't care if the jewdo-christian institute killed the scared woman.
I don't care if the white men killed the indians, the africans, the pegans and what not.

I don't care about my spiritual religion, I won't give anyone else special treatment because of his spiritual beliefs.

the de-vinchi code is about how the white-men oppressed the women throughout history by eradicating them from the holy books.
the manga (majo) has each story presenting a female young witch and her old witch teacher, saving the earth from some power-hungry whitey through the powers of green naturalism.

same message, again and again. screw them. what has nature ever done for me?

I've had it with this shit.

She was complaining about her Biology class. OK, that's not bad, I also hate Biology because it's boring and I kinda suck at it. Her reason? "The professor told us that even though Creationism can't be disproven, it's still a superstitious argument and he won't be focusing on it." She had the gall to say that it was a class where she'd be expected to put down answers "that they want, instead of what I truly believe."

Well guess what, you fuckwit, you're not taking Sociology. You're not taking "Literary Criticism 307". Your arbitrary system of beliefs won't allow you to bullshit your way through a science class. Are you trying to lose weight? That's a bad way to go about it, since you're going to lose muscle mass more than fat mass.

My bitch: long hair. My hair is getting long, not because I want to be cool or anything, but because I can't find a good place to get it cut. There's 2 places available, one is filthy and the stylists know one hairstyle: high and tight. The other is nicer but you have to wait 2 hours for a haircut and the place doesn't take reservations. So now my hair is almost as long as assertn's and it's a pain in the ass. I have to unclog the shower drain every other day, and sweep up loose hair from the floor 2 to 3 times a week. I might just shave it all off.

You should post a picture after you do that.

Mine is that.. some people don't listen, even when they're warned or threatened with something :/ Either people have no fear, or I'm not that intimidating. It's kinda hard to get a lot of people in a room to shut up, sit down and listen >.> and.. also create a good enough discussion to speak about.

How are you threatening them? One thing I learned is that you have to be LOUD, as well as assertive. Loud so it pretty much shocks them to shut up in the first place (like PA system loud), and assertive to show who's in control there. Depending on how you do it and who it is, it doesn't always work, but usually it does for me.

Another thing about the assertive thing is, are you in a position to be so? Like a group leader or something?

I'm the president of the club. I should be in a high enough position.

I think I just need to start kicking people out :( Because we are loud sometimes, and sometimes they just don't want to listen.. at all, until someone tells them to shut up about 3 times. Maybe I'm not that loud, though. I'm not sure.

I was threatening them with getting kicked out, which they seemed to respond to for a few seconds.

Unless you follow through, it's always going to seem like an empty threat. This kind of thing is fairly common (in America anyway) for women with any kind of authority. Women are either "too nice" to do it or they end up being called "a huge bitch." Men don't care as much about what others think about them, unconsciously or not, so it is less of an issue.

However, there is an exception to this. Unionized Secretaries. Do. not. fuck with them or you will soon find yourself out of a job. I've seen it happen and I've only been working at this job for half a year. Most of them are nice though.

Just grab a book/magazine/portable gaming system there and wait it out. If you can't do that, then just sleep. That's what I'd do anyway. I hate bad haircuts, and I've had my fair share of those.

I hate haircuts in general, as shown by my less-than-exhilaration in the picture thread.

My bitch is a rather mundane one; I hate how my skill in CoD4 fluctuates. At times, I'm owning just about everything in sight, and others, I can't seem to do anything but die. For example, last night I was playing a match of Hardcore S and D with my brother, a few of his friends, and a few people we didn't know.

First few matches, I was pretty much a non-factor. Then, when the match is just about over (My team was losing 2-3), something just happened, and I really hit my stride. In the first of the two rounds left, my team died with like two or three of the other guys left. The bomb is close to the objective, and there's about half a minute left. I get to the bomb, kill the guy who killed the last bomb-carrier, and plant with only a few seconds on the clock. Then, the last guy on the other team moves in and throws three consecutive stuns, afterward trying to rush in. Somehow, through my stun, I was able to kill the other.

Okay, so the match is now 3-3. Now the other team's planting and I take up a sniper spot. My team is being a bunch of douches, trying to go around killing the other team, so I decide to hurry downstairs to try and defuse. Somehow, I manage it, and my team wins the match.

And then, this afternoon, I'm failing hard. My point? Why in the hell can't I just be consistent? When I fail like today, I know why I have almost a hundred deaths an hour.

That worked in '06 but failed in the '07 playoffs which will encourage the pacifists to further restrict enforcing and fighting. Jaitne will need a more well-rounded team that can play well and be physical, if not necessarily fight and intimidate. Most teams she'll be up against won't even carry an enforcer, and if she does, the refs will penalize him every time he gets on the ice, so it's a lose-lose situation for her.

I've got a huge ass rash that's pretty much all over me except half of my arms and my face(thankfully my face is untouched). It's worst on my thighs and knees. It started off being itchy last night, but there was no sign of redness except on the undersides of my arms and my chest. I thought that was because I wiped myself too vigorously with a wet cloth before, so I dismissed it. In the morning, I felt really itchy again, but still no obvious redness, or so I though since I was half asleep. I felt like shit all day (general listlessness), and when I got home, I took off my pants and walah, I'm met with bright red legs with irregular patches of white.

I took some antihistamines and was going to wait if out for a day or two, but I was eventually convinced to see the doctor. We couldn't find anything wrong with me that would indicate something like measles or some other infection, so we think it may be a food allergy. Exactly what it is, I'm not sure. Allergic reactions can take up to 1-2 days before it really flares up.

The only real thing I can think of was that I had a few drinks yesterday evening.

It would suck if I developed an allergic reaction to alcohol.

My bitch: I'm stuck at the Singapore Changi airport because my travel agent is worthless and didn't provide the correct paperwork for me to get a flight into communist Vietnam. The people here in Singapore are nice enough, and there are some attractive women, but I'm about to go get a room at the transit hotel to spend the night until I get the visa situation for Vietnam cleared up. It really helps that it is Sunday evening and the travel agent in Vietnam isn't answering his cell phone. I should have stuck with trips to Japan, where it's civilized and I wouldn't have these headaches.

Actually I'm still here at the airport. Now I found out I have 2 days to spend before I can fly on. Any suggestions about what to visit and how to get around? The transit hotels at Changi cost60-65SD for 6 hours. So a night's stay is ~125SD which is something like $90-95US, which isn't terrible, but not great either. A recommendation of hotels in the area would be appreciated too. TIA!

Singapore is pretty small. Believe it or not you can go from one end of the island to the other in an hour's drive. You should get a hotel in the city area and do some shopping and eating. That's what Singapore's known for anyway. :)

Transport wise you can either take a cab, or use the subway (known as the Mass Rapid Transit), which is really easy and not as confusing as Japan's. Do let me know if you need additional help/info.

I ended up getting a hotel near the airport. Lots of people out and about on a Sunday night! I'll probably take a tour tomorrow and see the sites, maybe spend some time at the beach. I'm really surprised at the diverse cultural backgrounds of the people here. Not what I expected at all.

Are the prices as bad as they seem? So far really I've only seen prices at the airport, so maybe I'm getting the wrong impression. A can of Asahi cost US$5 at the airport, but since it was the first alcohol I've had in 4 months, it was worth it. I had a Japanese dinner at the hotel for US$26 and it was only a small sushi plate and beef roll dish and a can of Asahi beer.

Like I said, prices at tourist attractions are usually sky high. Things are much more cheaper outside of the airport, this I can assure you. And the new Terminal 3 is pretty much a shopping centre by itself, attracting lotsa of Singaporeans even during weekdays.

If you want to visit any beaches, be sure to check out Sentosa (http://www.sentosa.com.sg/explore_sentosa/index.html). It's actually an island south of Singapore, but it's really near and you can go there either by cable car, train, bus or any other public transport. It's a really beautiful place with a lot of cultural attractions.

Ahh, the pains of being a tourist. I guess it's something you have to live with, getting charged high prices in touristy areas. I suppose they figure you can afford it, so they gouge you as best they can.

So far, I haven't ventured outside the Changi area. Lots of government owned resort facilities, with big signs warning against trespassing.

I asked a security guard carrying an MP5 submachine gun at the airport for a picture; he declined.

I usually try not to bitch about stuff, but I just went 12 rounds with stupidity and lost. That merits a bitch. I was trying to read some guitar tabs that were in guitar pro format, so of course I needed to download guitar pro to read them. The program however, was compressed in some stupid format that winrar couldn't handle, so I had to download a special program to unzip the file (I forget which). As usual, I go to the torrent with the most peers and just download that.

Now, when I tried to install that special unzipping program, AVG anti-virus told me it was a security threat. AVG tells me a lot of things are security threats, so I didn't listen. But AVG, that pesky program, kept insisting. So I told it to stfu and disabled it. To my surprise (that's right, I was surprised), a browser opened up and went to a site called windowssettings, or something close. When I realized what that meant, I immediately shut off my wireless adapter and went offline. Not before a few of my windows settings had already been switched though. Including disabling task manager (didn't even realize you could do that).

Luckily I was able to access the administrator account under safe mode, but that didn't help any. I couldn't find where the virus files had installed. So I figured "eh, all the important stuff is backed up, might as well reformat". So I put in my xp install disk and reformated. When it came time to reinstall though, that little scratch on the surface that I didn't notice, came to bite me in the ass. Apparently a few important files were on those sectors and couldn't be accessed. Thus, I couldn't reinstall xp. Since my other computer is currently undergoing some heating/ventilation issues brought about by an earlier fight with stupidity, I couldn't use it to get a new copy of xp. It took two weeks before I was able to get a working copy from a friend to reinstall.

Yeah...this is not so much of a bitch about going two weeks without a computer, as it a bitch about just how stupid I can get.

You need to include more computer geeks/nerds in your circle of friends. One of them could have lent you an XP CD, or even Vista. Another good idea is to make an image of your PC right after a clean install and updating. The next time this kind of thing happens, you just re-image your PC and save yourself all kinds of hassles.

So I spent the day in Singapore, which is a continuing bitch from yesterday. Not that it's a bad place, just it wasn't part of my original travel plans. I visited Orchard street, a major shopping area here. Lots of lovely women unattended just hanging around. I couldn't tell if they were "working girls" or not, but if they were dressed that way and standing around in most parts of the world, it'd be a safe assumption. It could be the tropical climate, but they all had on tank tops and short shorts and were just standing around street corners like they were waiting for business, and they were almost all good-looking.

The MRT is nice and simple, but misses the character and endearing complexity of the Japanese rail systems.

That's Orchard road, one of the busiest areas in the Singapore town area. I'm not sure what girls you are referring to, but they sound like the normal school girl who go to town everyday without fail. And yes, I agree that most of them are good looking, but still no where near Tokyo standards.

Yes, Orchard road is what I was referring to. Busy area, lots of people even on a Monday evening, and prices were definitely cheaper than around the tourist areas and airport. Most of these girls were older, at least college age. They were probably just there shopping and hanging out, not prostitutes. Is that even allowed here? I know buying gum isn't allowed, though chewing it is :o .

It's weird, but I've eaten mostly Japanese food while here in Singapore, and a couple Satay dishes that were listed under "local favorites" on the menu. I don't know what would be considered "Singaporean", but hopefully I'll get to try some out before leaving tomorrow.

Well, prostitution is a big no-no in Singapore, though like any other country there is a legalised red light district (which is also a popular place for good food at night). You're unlikely to run into any "working girls" in the city, and even if you do, chances are that she's not a Singaporean and perhaps a foreign worker. We're known for that clean image, ya know?

You'll find that the laws in Singapore are pretty strict, and the penalties tend to be harsher than the average asian country.

The funniest thing I saw was one garbage collector who didn't want to touch the rope keeping the bottom closed with his bare hands (I guess he had lost his gloves), and he took an empty plastic bag from somewhere to cover his hands when he opened the sack to empty it. That was with the organic waste container, of course.

My car is losing coolant, and I mean a lot of it. The coolant surge tank has been empty for a while, so admittedly I procrastinated a little bit since everything was working fine and the temperature gauge was still dead-centered.

Up to two weeks ago, it was working fine, then one morning I have no heat. In the afternoon, the damn thing is overheating. I figure my coolant has finally gone critically low (should be obvious I have a leak), but there's no [obvious] leak, no puddle of coolant after I back out of my parking space. I've been carrying a jug of water just in case fast highway speeds and running the heat full blast don't cool it down.

So today, still well under warranty, I take it into the dealership to have it looked at and get an oil change while I'm at it. They top the coolant off and I drive home (about 10 minutes). Pop the hood because I want a good gauge of were the coolant level is at so I can monitor it, and the damn surge tank is fucking empty!

I drive it back to the dealer about an hour later, they look at it, check the dipstick and oil pan for any leaks in there. Nothing. They have no idea where the hell the problem is and I'm left pretty much back where I started two weeks ago.

By now, I'm all manner of pissed off and I couldn't even leave it there because the only loaner they have is already out with someone else.

If I lived anywhere in a city or outside of America (excluding Canada and Australia) I really wouldn't give a shit, but there's no public transport that will take me the 35 miles to work each day.

I had that problem for most of my life into my late 20s until I got in shape and in better health. Almost all my friends growing up had the same problem, but they were all geeks/nerds too and we all spend way to much time in front of the TV and computers.

You're young, it's a good time to decide to get active, maybe take up a sport and start eating right to get your immune system in gear. Now when I get sick, it's really mild, so much so that it becomes a problem because I won't rest or take it easy, making it take longer to fully recover, so I run around at 80% for a few days.

If it's losing coolant and the fluid's not hitting the ground, it could also be a blown head gasket. I had a car with a not-so-great header design that would blow the gasket in the same place every 50k miles or so.

It didn't really noticeably lose power or anything, it's just that every firing of the number 3 cylinder burned off a couple drops of gas and a drop or two of coolant.

But yeah, sucks about them flaking on the loaner vehicle like that. Hopefully you made an appointment to leave it and get the loaner at some point in the near future?

Yeah, I'm dropping it off early Wednesday morning so they can give it a thorough look over. They said the loaner would be back by then, and their lead tech would be back as well.

I've convinced myself the problem is the head gasket since there's nothing going on in the oil pan. I must be burning it off.

I can't believe you said that, even if its true. Anyway I could never survive in that kind of situation I'd feel suffocated. I like being around intelligent people. If they're more knowledgeable than I am then even better because then I know that there are things they can teach me. I have an almost uncontrollable desire to absorb any knowledge I can, and I'm a very quick learner so things become too easy all too quickly and then I stop caring and look for the next challenge. It really becomes a problem.
I'm like that too for the most part. I was just replying to Xelbair's rant about being the most computer knowledgeable person in his family and therefore having to keep fixing people's problems.

In general, it's obviously impossible for me to be the most knowledgeable in all fields of knowledge. What I said was purely in the context of computer know-how, and by "everyone I know", I meant everyone I've interact with extensively.

I'm pretty much the most knowledgeable person I know in real life, and it's not that bad. It gives me the right to condescend people, which I truly love doing.

Yeah, but tell me there are times when you're tired of condescending people and just want them to F*CK OFF!

Luckily for me, I'm somewhat knowledgeable compared to those I know if real life. But not the the point where they won't believe me if I say "how the hell would I know"

It's sad. I've lost my thirst for knowledge. I'm just kinda drifting through life right now, without any real desire. It really does kinda suck. (yeah, this can count as my bitch).

I guess my goal throughout my earlier years was to graduate with awesome highschool grades. That I did. Now I'm at Uni, in a course I'm not really interested in. I convinced myself to do it because:

1) There's likely to be a high demand for my profession in the future.
2) The pay is alright/good, depending on many factors
3) I told myself that I was never interested in schoolwork neither, so circumstances haven't really changed. If I was to choose something I was interested in, I'd be waiting for years without result.

You can say I'm in the "lost your way through life" chapter right now.

I've noticed that I'm starting to do that a little. I'm using a lot more English words in my Chinese than I would like. Frankly, it sounds like I'm incompetent in Chinese, whereas I've actually picked it up somewhere/got into the habit. I'm going to make an effort to stop this.

I thought about starting small buisness of fixing computers(i would put Ads at my school)...but i really don't like fixing pc... especialy if i didin't made system disc image when installing stuff. Also i would have to go to other people houses and fix(witch is the part that i hate the most!) or ask them to take their pc to my house, also i'm kinda out of monitor to work with those pcs(2 are used by my parents, one by me, and tvs are arleady connected to pc and i have such mess near cables so i hate unplugging them). Being IT servisant/encyclopedia would not be bad IF when i say something that they dont agree with(for expample that IE is NOT a safe browser), or discribe how something works(and they think that it works other way) they start saying i don't know anything/i'm wrong and when i start using argumens i get response "Dont argue with me" <- i hate that response the most.

Fixing a computer isn't telling them: Hey, you should use this because I think it's better. That's being snide and telling them what you think they need to do. Fixing a computer is just that.. fixing a computer, fixing what's wrong. If it's not broken, don't fix it. They have a right to say they don't want to hear it when what you're telling them isn't a real problem.

CNN is running these iReport segments where local yokels in the states weigh in on the economic crisis in the US. Just goes to show why your average US citizens are idiots and should not be allowed to vote or decide on anything. These people are complaining that they are in financial troubles, so why doesn't the government bail them out, instead of bailing out the financial institutions.

Two reasons, dipshits: 1) the financial institutions are in trouble because borrowers like you defaulted on your mortgages and debts, leaving banks and lenders in the red.
2) saving your dumb self from your financial mismanagement won't help the greater economy, whereas saving major lending institutions and investment banks will keep the economy going and help us out of this mess.

Sigh, CNN just showed interviews with people on the street and most of them have withdrawn their money from their bank accounts and store it at home. My lord, people have no f*cking clue do they.

If you know a specific bank will go under, it doesn't seem like a wise thing to leave your money there (even though such actions will only accelerate its demise, but that's not any problem of the customer). I don't know how large the deposit insurance is in the USA, but I'm also pretty sure quite a few people don't even know such a thing exists.

Keeping it all at home is pretty funny, though (especially for burglars who will no doubt enjoy such a trend).

FDIC provides $100,000 of deposit insurance per account. As long as your account balances are less than that, you'd be covered either way... just that it may take a couple extra days to extract your money from your failed bank.

It's not just the stupid borrowers. It's also the predatory lenders, outright lies and misinformation presented by loan agents to convince stupid borrowers to borrow more than they could ever pay back, and the horrible mis-rating of these subprime-backed securities that are failing to perform.

I'd rather see an effort to resolve the backing of those bad securities (ie: by turning high-rate subprime mortgages into low fixed-rate mortgages where people can actually pay back their debts) than to see the government pin a bunch of inflation on the entire public to reward the malfeasance of a bunch of bankers.

Reply to Kraco:

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts, and leads to economic turmoil such as we have today. A couple people have even been arrested lately for posting hoaxes online saying that one or another bank was about to fail, hoping to incite customers to withdraw their money and actually make the bank fail.

If people don't know about FDIC insurance and the limits covered, they should educate themselves on the subject. It should be a requirement before you even get to open a bank account.

Keeping it at home is counter to economic stability and growth. If banks don't have deposited money to lend out, they have no way to make money beyond fees on accounts. Without lending, their is reduced investment and growth and people can't finance houses or cars. Without investment and growth and consumer spending, things get stagnant and we get recessions. It's a domino effect, started by uninformed citizens. From the interviews done by CNN, there are many many uninformed people in the US.

Of course, this could have been CNN's agenda, demonstrating how dumb people are about the economy, to prove a point.

The lenders are at fault but not so much as the stupid borrowers. People should know their limits, but they always try to live above their means. If you make $3k/mo, no amount of smooth-talk from a lender should convince you that you can afford a $2k/mo mortgage.

I also agree that the lenders should be punished for their part in this mess, while making it possible for borrowers to keep their homes and their credit records by giving them a way to pay their debts. I did not mean to suggest I support the Bush bail out plan, which is typical hind-sighted policy-making of his presidency.

Problem is that if consumers are to do the right thing, so to speak, they're gambling on a significant number of other people doing it as well. No one in their right mind (oh, such irony) would weight their life's fortune with their minute (powerful in numbers, but minute nonetheless) efforts to reverse the trend.

That's why we need institutions like the central banks and governments who's goal is to look at the bigger picture, and enough cash to actually have an effect on it's own.

The idea of saving your own hide and let someone else take the risk is a reasonable decision, despite its contradictory results.

Edit: is it true to say the USA's been hit the hardest?

Well I don't think it's so much that as it is investors becoming more uneasy about leaving their money in the market without assurances that the government will help to get the economy healthy. Once a second round of talks was initiated, the stock market rebounded, as investors gained some confidence that a bailout was still possible. Plus with the drop in stock prices, bargain hunters bought back in.

I think there's been a proposal (if it hasn't been enacted yet), to increase the FDIC insurance limit, to encourage people to keep their accounts.

It's not just the stupid borrowers. It's also the predatory lenders, outright lies and misinformation presented by loan agents to convince stupid borrowers to borrow more than they could ever pay back, and the horrible mis-rating of these subprime-backed securities that are failing to perform.
First of all, the whole thing started by the Clinton administration, who urged banks to offer sub-primes to the lower-class families so they can afford to own homes.

There are a lot of arguments that suggest inflation would be far worse without the bailout plan: mostly because of the effect the crisis trickling down to businesses in many irrelevant sectors. If left alone, the situation is supposed to be a soft recession at best or a soft depression at worst.

Both sides for and against the bailout argue for the best interest of the tax-payer, rather than the banks. Everyone seems to be in agreement that the bank execs with "golden parachutes" are the source of the problem.

Right, it's part of the current legislation and seems to be the part both parties are touting the most as a sign of the bill's progressiveness and benefit to the taxpayers.

The problem is, and hopefully I'm not generalizing too much, but most middle income people don't have that much in the bank in the first place, so increasing from $100k to $250k won't help them since they're already safely under the limit. It will help small businesses though.

But these middle income folks don't even know of the FDIC protection so they're rushing to remove their money from banks to protect from loss. At $100k or $250k guarantees, the uninformed person will withdraw their money in a panic anyway, undermining the entire system.

"Soul Jazz Quartet" is somewhat understandable since there probably isn't a Chinese equivalent term. I only focus on the instances where they deliberately substitute English words into sentences when there are Chinese equivalents.

Words such as: manager, expensive, bus, hair.

In essence, the sentence would sound something like, "Wang dang fang mang hair gang lang manager mang sang wang long dong."

I miss cable TV in the US. When visiting Asian countries, the hotels only have 10-15 channels, and your choices in English are soccer coverage, CNN, BBC, and Discovery channel. I dearly miss Food Network, G4, Spike, TNT, FOX, and all the other ways to kill time on the boob tube.

There would be individual words, but they're so rarely used no one will understand you. You also have the problem of having different Chinese equivalents depending on location: Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland can vary. Examples are things like wireless router and server.

That's understandable since this is TV, and the intended audience probably doesn't speak English. This behavior is only prevalent among Chinese fobs who just moved away from the motherland and think that mixing English into their sentences makes them less fobby.

Okay.

My bitch starts and ends at work.

You probably don't know this (because I forgot to tell everyone - as if you cared anyway), but I've recently been employed by Kmart. I've been training on the register for the past week or so, and have been on my own for another few days. I've had a relatively easy time of it so far. Well, until today.

This story starts with a co-worker of mine asking me if I minded working for him Saturday (today) from 5-10. Being the nice guy I am, I accepted, and we made the necessary arrangements with the supervisors. So today comes along, and while I'm not completely enthused by losing a quarter of my Saturday, I'm still relatively okay with everything. I walk in, meet with the supervisors, who again clear everything, and I clock in. I swear, as soon as I turned on my register's light, people just frickin' FLOCKED to me like flies on shit. No lie.

At this point, my attitude's kind of spiraling down, but I still try to keep my spirits up and hope dearly that the day ends swiftly, and that after this round of customers, I could relax for a bit.

Clearly, I was wrong as all hell.

Okay, so I've covered my part of the bitch, but that still leaves the guy who asked me in and the girl who's working as the only other cashier tonight.

I'll start with the guy I switched with; I come in, and he's in the store, because he didn't expect me to show. That's the first dick move. After I get settled with the first round of customers, he comes up to me and asks if I worked tomorrow. Conversation went as follows:

"Hey, you working tomorrow?"
"No, I don't think so... why?
"...Think you'd like to come in tomorrow?"

Son of a bitch. Second dick move.

Needless to say, I decline and get back to work, because there's another fifteen customers coming my way.

Now for the really shitty part: the other cashier? Wasn't doing SHIT. Whenever I actually saw her running her register, she was taking one or two customers, while I was left to deal with the other thirteen. Worst of all were the times she WASN'T there (most of the time), when I still had to deal with the incessant lines. At about 7:30, when my shift is half-over, I finally catch up to the wretched line and happily jump at my supervisor's advice to take my 15-minute break. When that's over, I'm back at my register, and everything is still calm.

Wait another three minutes, and there's the line again, with no help from the other cashier.

And all of that isn't even taking the irrational customers into account.

For instance, there was this one lady who had at least fifteen plants in her cart, and when she gave them to me so that I could scan them, she just left them there on my counter, allowing me no room to move or put anything. Finally, one of the other people in her party gain enough sense to move the damn things out of my way.

Then there was a man and his wife, buying crap that they thought were on sale (I think they probably were, too), but the deal wasn't showing up on my register. So the guy goes ballistic and pretty much tells me where to stick it. But he has more items that he needs checked out, so I move on to the next item on the list. Mistake on my part because I was already frazzled and ready to snap: I forgot to void the rest of the crap out. So the guy pretty much explodes when I tell him the new total, so I walk away and ask the supervisor how to void all. She tells me, I void, and I find only the wife at the counter, because the man had gone to check prices. More likely is that he decided to go smoke some weed, because when he got back, he was much much calmer than before. I ring all the items again and get them out of my line, apologizing the whole way through.

So, after almost four hours of this, my supervisor finally calls the chick over to do something and allows me to do some returns. I finish the first cart-full of returns, and when I get back to the front of the store, there's only three or four customers in her line. That was a bitch to see. Here I am, trying to do fifteen things at once, and then she comes and finally does something, and she has it all easy! After I get almost done with the second cart of returns, I get called back to my register, and it starts all over again. Fifteen minutes of line passes and I get back to my returns, and after I'm done with them, I am told to go bring the carts back from outside, where all the stupid douches leave them. I do this, and by the time I'm done, it's time to close. I couldn't have been more relieved as I closed out the register.

And for all the bitching I did, I do have to say that I felt rather satisfied to find the huge stack of bills in the register (even though I know I'm only making about 1/20 of that back in my paycheck).

What a fucking adventure. I'm not closing for someone else ever again. Period.

Got better, and decided to test it again with the same beer.

It was the beer.

Pity, because it was one of the best I've had.

Next I'll have to test a different brand of beer, then a different form of alcohol all together to find out exactly what I'm allergic to.

Damn. Hope you don't have to give up beer for good. It'd be a shame if you couldn't post any drunk ramblings on GW. Of course, we'd still have Paulyboy.

Oh the joys of working register. How I don't miss those days.
