a girl who was with me in the army came by the store toady, so I said hello.
I haven't seen such a look of 'get out of my life' since I've tried talking to an Ex of mine..

I haven't seen such hatred and disgust in someone's eye since I've seen my reflection in the mirror.

I have a odd job today upgrading hard drives for a doctors office. Sounds easy, right? One problem: This doctors office uses a lot of expensive, proprietary software. The software vendors won't give them the discs. This means I can't just format the new drives because I don't have the software they need.
So I turn to Norton Ghost. For some reason I've had error after error after error. DriveImageXML and Clonezilla are giving me similar problems. Maybe it's because these PCs are taiwanese cheapos.

Is she hot? I've seen this powerpoint presentation that's made the rounds on the internet showing all these hot chicks in the Israeli army.

What kinds of errors? Regardless of where the PCs were made, the hardware should behave the same and the drive imaging software shouldn't have a problem...

It depends on what sort of error you're talking about too. Are they all having trouble reimaging onto the new drive, or reading off the old one? Cuz the latter means the HDD is buggered with read errors already.

I bit into some crab last night, and the shell somehow dislodged the metal wire sitting behind my lower-front teeth. (I had braces years back, and I've still got a metal wire sitting behind there. I was allowed to take it out when I was 18.)
Originally the wire held 6 teeth in place, but the cement on the leftmost 2 have broken, and the wire sits at an awkward angle now. Since it's rigid, it now pulls/pushes on the others, numbing them.
The dentist doesn't open till Monday, and even then I'm not sure if I can get a booking :(.
Damn crab.

Problem is - I'm contracted for six months and I can't work Thursday mornings due to time conflict with a university laboratory class, so if I don't sort this out well with my supervisor, I'll have to put down my employment.

That is just plain ridiculous. I'm more worried about the people who don't have petty marijuana charges on their record. I really think that stuff like this should warrant a lawsuit... a previous arrest for weed has nothing to do with any sort of job function you'd be doing at a walmart.
I totally sympathize w\ your situation.
Does walmart use that applicant screening system that places like best buy and target use? where they ask you hundreds of questions and just reword the questions over and over? I think that is the most retarded concept ever... they filter out possibly good applicants and hire douchebags who probably aren't qualified.

I shouldn't care since you voted to have me banned, but since I'm going back to school I know how you feel. Right now I'm registered for 12 hours for the Fall semester, and each semester after I will only be taking about 12 hours. If one class is canceled, I'll fall outside "full time" status and that could cause problems with taxes and such, not to mention it could add another semester before I could graduate.
Are you talking about not having enough people for a particular class, or for the entire program? That's pretty rough if they cancel the entire term for lack of participation. Maybe you can get an internship or work during the semester off.

I was taking cisco courses and they kinda threw the regulations out the window with them, because all other classes get scrapped if nobody signs up... but I had 2-3 of the cisco courses that were just me and another student.... heck.. I think my last one was just me and the teacher !
It got funny one semester because this one old faculty member's class was scrapped because of not having enough people and they wind up bringing him in to "help out" and then our class only had 3 people in it.
I need 1 credit to have my associates degree ( WOOHOO....) which I'm starting to think will impact me as much as having my GED did when I was 17.

I think I have pink eye but I don't really want to goto the doctor and miss work so I'm going to tough it out until the end of the day to see if it clears up or not.. could just be bad allergies idk. A particular class (Semiology III) wich in turn wont allow me to take Semiology IV the term after, and in order to take the other classes i must take Semiology IV along them as a correquisite.
So this term ill take everything except Semio III and next term i take nothing BUT Semio III.

a sincere letter
To: All it may concern
Subject: I don't give a damn
I really don't. On a scale of one to ten, with one being the lowest, and ten being 'damn', my level is that I don't give a damnnnn!.
I don't know why it costs so much, I don't know if we're cheaper than the store next to us. I don't know how long the special price will remain, and I don't know why the same product costs less in your town. Truth is, I don't practically care. YOU came here, so obviously you want to buy, and if you came here and didn't immediately leave after seeing the price, then either buy it, or shut the hell up.
It's not that I don't want to do my job, I'll perfectly willing to explain the difference between a 0.5 HB pencil lead head and a 0.9 B2 head. I'll gladly find you whatever stupid cartoon character collage ruled notebook, I really have no problem with my job being a cross between fetch dog and half assed wiki.
But don't think for a second that I care. not for a damn moment I'm really concerned with what gift you should bring to your 12 year old grandson (hint: not a colored pencil. try money), I'm mostly concerned with:
A. making you take the fanciest, most expensive, least sold before product to the registry.
B. Making you get out my face so I could talk and exchange jokes with my coworkers.
Also, your little, beloved, oh so charming son is finally going to school? come with him alone and leave his younger brothers with someone to watch over them (the other parent, his grandma, the television). You (and I mean it, You. not me) don't need this kind of shit, School supplies is expensive enough on it's own - you don't need to buy each one of the little monsters an attention gift.
Also, either bring the fuckin' school list, or shut up when I tell you what's good for you. on this field (as far as you know), I'm the expert. So if I say that most schools require you to bring shit that didn't exist when you were a kid, I know what I'm talking about, and you can't prove I'm lying.
It's okay if you want to see a certain color from this certain model of a Jansport bag, but if I tell you I'm going to the searing hot storage room to look for it, then you better be willing to buy it. or leave immediately afterwards. this isn't a catalog. I'm one day close to demand people to show me the money before doing any shit for them ("sure, I can look for the 5YM superbreak, just show me you got 179.99 NIS to pay for it"). And again, this is the price, there's no discount for asking real nice. and don't ask where you can find this model for a cheaper price, do your own damn research (hint: not in the mall. though, it doesn't matter for jansport, it's the same everywhere).
And I mean it. I WORK HERE. I sell stuff that we keep. as long as I'm wearing the black (with orange letters) outfit, I'm not your friend (actually, seeing as we have an imminence age difference, and you shop in the mall for funz. I'm NEVER your friend). If we don't sell enough, we will go out of business, and I'll have no money. I am not your shopping adviser. at worst case, I can direct you to the closest store of the chain, I'll even call them and ask if they have whatever you're looking for in stock. I won't direct you to our competition.
But that's not the point. the point is, that I don't give a damn. forgot to buy a present to your parents and the store closed five minutes ago? I don't care. (also, Hint: they don't need a digital photo frame, they want attention. but we don't sell attention, and we do sell digital photo frames, do you catch the drift?).
also: dear mall management. it's summer, it's hot. it's a half open mall. we need air conditioning, and if not available, more ventilation. much more ventilation. second point, I see that open space is valuable to you. you know what valuable for the people working there? it's that we can monitor what's happening in our selling space. It's Israel. our two miles long park has three entries, because the city council doesn't want to pay for a fourth security guard. why does our space have six entries, in less than a 20 feet radios? we've got more holes than a heroin shooting Swiss whore (like a Swiss cheese, only a whore). of course I can't be nice to customers (and make entire mall a better place, in the grand scale of things), if there's always a minority standing behind the bags (which are apparently more expensive here than in her town) dressed in full black, with long sleeves and all, just two steps away from the parking lot. Open space my ass, I've never seen a store that doesn't monitor who comes in and out, just put a damn fence around us.
to conclude my point, I'm not a bad sales person (at least not horribly bad), I'm simply a bad person (ok, I'm not a people's person, despite how well I hide it). I know there are much worse jobs than mine, and I'm doing an effort to do my job the best I can. but I don't care about the customers, and if you come in to see whats new after closing time, I will rip your head off and feed it to the cat the sleeps in the mall (yes, we have a cat sleeping inside the building, it's not hygienic, but I don't care, because I simply don't give a damn).
yours truly, a sales man battling to stay sane until September 1st.
long rants are for the flame pit, short rants are for the bitching threads.
edit: obviously, I wrote stay 'sand' instead of stay 'sane'. how hilarious.

I didn't really mind it too bad at the grocery store seafood counter (except for the rare complete scumbags), it was the boredom that got to me.
Even the people who told me they could drive an hour to the shore to get whatever I was selling 10x cheaper didn't really bother me, at least they were someone to talk to for a few minutes.

Especially an on-campus job. I worked 2 years as a department assistant and it was great being to be around all the ladies... My friend who got me the job was quite a charactor. He was in his mid 30's but it was hard to tell he was even close to 30. He was picking up all sorts of girls, all the time. I met my wife @ school and lots of other girls before we were dating and some while we were taking a break from dating : )

I can only imagine that Macs are easy to figure out considering they are geared towards the non-tech users who treat computers as appliances. If those folks can get a Mac to work, I'll be able to figure it out.
As far as meeting women, I'll at least get to look at tons of them since the IT help booth is centrally located in the main library/computer usage facility. The thing is, I've pretty much gotten over liking women for their looks. I'm enlightened so I'm more interested in their personality and interests. Guess that comes with age or just not being very successful with the hot ones.

Current bitch: AT&fuckingT. Signed up for a phone line with DSL service since Uverse isn't available in my neighborhood and I've heard horror stories about TimeWarner in Austin. Unfortunately it's been a f*cking nightmare getting service from at&t. The installer monkey came out on Tuesday and hooked up the line and it worked ok. A few hours later, no dial tone. I call, the repair won't occur until Friday. There's no problem local to my premises, it's on their side, since there's no service up to the demarc.
So 3 days without service, then I wait around at home all day Friday... and no repair guy shows up. I call their "customer support" line, they see the trouble ticket, and they see no one has made a visit. Nothing they can do to help besides reissue the trouble ticket. No idea when a repair guy can show up. So I get pissed and tell them I want to cancel all services (phone line/DSL/DirecTV). "So sorry, customer service is closed for the day, you'll have to call back tomorrow to cancel services." So I told the guy thanks a lot and to "f*ck off" before hanging up.

That sucks.... I had to call time warner once and spent an hour humoring this guy who even insisted that I restart my computer to reset my NIC... and he got an attitude when I started asking him why I would do that.
Luckily I have FiOS now even though I haven't gotten around to running a cable to my "office" and my wireless is occasionally flaking out.

Well it pays to get upset I guess. I called AT&T on Saturday to cancel my services. My call was immediately routed to the cancellations department by the automated system whereas usually you have to go through several selections to get a human. The customer support guy apologized, offered me 1/2 off for 6 months of internet service (savings of $105 over 6 months) and a repair tech would be dispatched that day. I warily agreed, and waited for them to mess it up again by not sending a tech. A couple hours later, a tech arrives, explains he normally doesn't do service on Saturdays or in my area, but got the trouble call and made the visit. Half hour later, phone works and internet too, plus now I got the discount for 6 months (I'll have to follow up to make sure they honor that).

On august 1 i have exactly one month of vacation, having nothing to do i thought "Hey! i`ll get a month of xbox live" so i go to stores and they dont sell 1 month worth of live in my country or the 3 months even, only the whole year one and it cost 120 US$ (in the us it cost somewhere between 50$). I try to get it with my credit card on the xbox marketplace and they won`t accept my credit card cause my card is dominican while my account is american, so i create a dominican account but i can`t do that because they dont accept dominican accounts. So i call my aunt and see if she can get me a card and she says "yeah sure, i`ll get it this week", the following week i ask if she bought it and she says "uhmmm... what card?" so after reexplaining everything she says "oh yeah, sure, i`ll get it this week" on thursday that week i ask her if she got it and she says that she`s sick, i ask what`s wrong and she answers that she only goes out on weekends (what does that has to do with being sick...? w/e ill ask her on weekend), so that weekend i ask yet again and she`s like... "oh... today is wekeend? ok NOW i`m sick" wich made me  she`s clearly not going to buy anything because she`s lazy as hell and "too tired from work" wich irks me because if it were me and she needed me i would get up my bed at ANY time and do w/e i have to do for her in a matter of minutes and she knows it, today is august 17 and i don`t think it`s worth it to try anymore, i just wanted to play live on my vacations and instead i get to look at my wall the whole month (it`s white by the way). :( .

Maybe it's your sign that you should spend the time doing something besides playing Xbox during your month off.

I spent a month and a half in a (7) cast(s). A month and a half in a walking boot on crutches.
And as of a week ago I have started rehab and Physical therapy and can almost walk again =D.
It'll be another 3-6 months before the fibula heals, but I should regain my ankle in a few weeks. My knee in a couple more weeks after that.
I may be able to ride my bike (finally) in a month or so.
So I'm kind of still busted. but recovering. If I have to walk from my office to the lab I have to wear das damn boot. If I get to spend all day in the same building I can walk normally, though painfully and with significant limp.
The PT is amazing. I've literally watched my calf muscle grow every day I've been allowed to walk.
I'm almost a whole boy again!
Once I can run and kick again next year, Equador here I come!

All happened in one damned day. Oh, and also wi-fi signal was fading randomly, damned interferences.

I bought a Dell Precision 690 ( yes, on ebay ! )
And the seller never replied to my question about something in the description... I got it today and it looks awesome. Went to plug it in though, and it takes a proprietary power cord !!!!! ZOMG!
I got a killer deal though... it's got 2 3ghz dual core xeons, 4gb, 4x 146gb sas, which i bought 4 750gb WD Raid ediitons to replace w\... got it for $605, and the same system from dell would be around $2,000 easy.

So I decided to finally clean up the basement and I noticed that my old PSX was laying about I figured I should put it away in its box. I've spent the past hour tearing up the basement looking for the box, plus my other system boxes (N64, DC, GC, SNES) and they are NOWHERE to be found. What's really annoying about this is the fact that I can't remember where I put them but I'm almost 100% sure my mom tossed them out during one of her cleaning binges. Now with the swine flu, the university is asking students to stay home if they have flu like symptoms to prevent the spread of germs. Good luck with that, considering how much attendance counts towards your grade in most classes nowadays.

1) Not die, as that would tarnish the university's reputation.
2) Fail the course, and provide the university with an extra year's tuition (or at least a summer course).
3) Not get the professor sick, because they like to have office hours so they can demean their students one-on-one, confident that they can do what they want because they have tenure and you can't do jack squat about it.

They've been doing it to CANAAN recently, and Kara no Kyoukai a while back. All I can suggest is if you know your ISP is bitchy about this stuff to use DDL sites:

They can just get the information (ie your IP) from the tracker. As for whether that's enough for them to send you a notice, of if they have to physically download something from you to prove it, I'm not sure.

they need to catch you downloading something from torrent - at least here. Take notice that most trackers are probably outside your country, and they would need to study foreign law to get idea how to force them to get their logs.
If they don't need those information in your country just download using proxy located somewhere in Russia or something.

I've always tried to give people a chance and talk to them directly when there are issues or concerns, especially if someone else brings them to my attention but won't say anything to the actual people involved. It's rarely worked out. Either the troublemakers were offended and defiant, or they thought I was the one with the problem with them, in which case they were offended and defiant. I'm learning it's best to backdoor people rather than give them a chance to correct themselves.

Basically anything that will suck the moisture out is going to be good for it. Leaving it under a hot lamp, burying it in rice, putting it in the fridge, etc. Best option is using those silicon pellets that come packaged with electronics, since that's what they're for in the first place.

my company spent $2000+ in january to renew our symantec license for updates, etc.... and yet i'm going to end up spending probably 2 hours today messing w\ this girls computer because symantec is unable to do it's job.
I'm installing vipre antivirus-spyware and am 99% certain that it will remove everything within 15 minutes of running a scan, whereas symantec just shows it to be quarantined over and over and does nothing to stop it from popping up all these windows, etc.
I honestly believe that the only reason symantec is still in business is because they have been around forever and so many people think of symantec / norton when they think antivirus software and people just aren't aware that there are much better programs available nowadays.

I have to agree with this. She's obviously going to sites and clicking on prompts that allow these apps to install. I don't know of any antivirus that will stop something from installing if you click on "allow" or "ok" to the install prompt. Maybe she didn't keep the definitions updated.
I use Norton because, like Buff, it was my first and I haven't had any issues with viruses or spyware/malware/adware. Also, my PCs are all beefy enough not to notice any performance hits from NAV.

besides, if they do it long enough, then the kids can say in twenty years from now "collage? I don't have a diploma per say. but I've spent some years there, I'm totally qualified for burger flipping!" without actually lying.
if they come talking to you, just tell them that the coming of the anti-Christ has probably been avoided because of abortions.

By children, I meant their 7-11 year old children. A lot of the protesters looked like really young adults or in their early thirties.
Apparently, they set up tents, so they were back to rallying up again today.
While I do not have a care in the world if someone supports pro-life or pro-choice, it just seems really bad when other people and their beliefs try to superimpose their opinions on you. It is especially bad when they do it by attributing other events totally unrelated to what they are talking about (misinformation) and they refuse to comply with the law or other people's contrasting positions on these issues.

Does the "all natural" fad also include abstaining from soap? Because I don't think it's normal for someone who may not use deodorant but at least showers daily to smell so bad that people can smell them from 10 feet away. The worst part is that it's not even the summer time...or maybe that's a good thing.
I can understand the allergy argument, but there has to be alternative products that serve that market.

I remember walking through a narrow doorway before, and this other guy came at the same time from the other side. We when we both moved our shoulders a little to indicate which way we were moving, we saw the other do the same, so stopped to let them go. It happened numerous times before we laughed and moved on. From a bystander's point of view, the shoulder movement was so slight (and plus there was no leg movement), it must have looked like we had a stand-off for a good 5 seconds.

I feel the exact opposite. I fucking HATE voicemail. It's antiquated technology. It's a backwards system. I miss a call, so some idiot leaves me a message saying, "Hi this is Joe I was just trying to call you. Call me back"
No shit Joe! My cell phone has a little message that says "1 missed call from Joe". I know you were trying to call me. I know how I should call you back. Why do you waste my time leaving me this idiotic message. Now I have to log into my voicemail, type in my five-digit code, listen to your pointless message, and delete it. I probably won't check my voicemail for four or five days, so it'll be a moot point by then. I wish I could just disable voicemail so my phone continues to ring until I pick up or the caller hangs up.

I don't ever leave messages either in other people's voice mails. It would be very hard for me to do that anyway because the moment my subconsciousness realises a phone call connects to a voicemail, my thumb disconnects the call. I do the same thing. When I'm ringing on behalf of someone and they didn't pick up, it always ends up as:
A: It went to his voicemail
B: Oh, then leave him a message.
A: I hung up already.
The hatred doesn't just cover the use of voicemail, but also the voice that says "The person you are calling is unavailable, to notify them of your call, plea-" [insert rage here].

The voicemail thing isn't so much a problem when voicemail costs extra money on top of your phone plan. Ah Canada, home of extortionist phone companies. On the phone plan I had for the last 3 years, I had the basic plan and no extras. No call display or caller ID, no voicemail, no text messaging, nothing. So if someone phoned me and I didn't hear my phone, I'd come back to a message that said, "1 missed call. Unknown." Not that I minded too much since I don't really like talking on the phone. I trained all my friends to email me instead as a faster way of getting in contact with me.

My biggest problem with mobile phones is that the vibrate option isn't as strong as I'd like it to be. It's especially a problem when I'm wearing shorts, since they fit looser than jeans and pants. Often, with my ipod plugged in, vibrating's the only thing that will alert me to a call. I'm buying a phone with proper music functionality next time.

1. Wash your hands, soap and water, count to 20+ seconds (hot or cold doesn't matter). Don't bother with any of that sanitizer unless you can't find water, it's not nearly as helpful.
2. Don't touch your face...ever.

Aside from developing a strong habit of touching your face, it only applies after your hands may have contacted something contaminated. If you are, for example, sitting at home, it doesn't really matter (unless you have potentially diseased people hanging around) or have otherwise managed to compromise your last bastion. Out there, like at work, it's an unfortunate habit indeed.

The common areas in the library are zoos. It's like a social gathering place for students that's not a bar. I don't study in libraries, though I think it's a skill you need to acquire to be able to work/study/sleep regardless of distractions.

Why the fuck do so many people insist on making as much noise as possible in the library? I thought of all places on a university campus, the library is supposed to be the quietest.Because in my experience, some of the dumbest people go to the library because that is where they believe one goes to study when at college/university. Most of those kind of people don't really even belong in university, they just do it because that is what is expected in their place in society, their parents are paying for it, and they go to college to party. They don't even have an idea what they want to do in life, and a lot of the them are Liberal Arts majors.
I'm generalizing of course, but this was my experience. Our library had group study rooms for discussions and talking, and they were either (a) empty, or (b) full of people so loud you could hear them five bookshelves away from the closed door. Everywhere else was the barely-hushed whispering and people talking on cell phones or not studying playing on laptops (not the commuters, this was at 10pm).
It doesn't work for everyone, but I got around to studying either in my academic buildings (Engineering) or under headphones in my dorm rooms. Music wasn't really distracting and I didn't really listen to it anyway, it becomes white noise. My roommate was similar, he'd study with the television on for the white noise.
The library never gets used for studying, because that is what a lot of the idiots think is the place to go to be smart. It rarely works for them, but most of their classes aren't hard anyway.
Disclaimer: I apologize for any individuals in the Liberal Arts who paid their own way into University or had a true interest in their field of study, European students who passed relevant entrance/placement exams in their respective countries, or anyone else who earned their way into and through college. I also apologize to persons who legitimately used the library for studying (often under the headphones just like me to block out the noise, and those who used the computers in the library to type their papers and written homework assignments. I used to find good spots to study at my old university but I haven't been able to find anything in the past 4 years I've been at my current one. And the thing is, I'm not sitting in areas where there are tables for groups of people to gather, I'm on the 2nd highest floor along the perimeter where there are single person carrels...which is only the 6th floor because this POS university only has 7-floor library. The 7th floor is even noisier, if you can believe it. After almost 9 years (on and off) in university, you'd figure I'd be able to study with distractions but I can't. For some reason my mind seems to focus on the most annoying thing that most people can ignore.
Maybe I should just get a new set of headphones. I used to study with music all the time, and I think I retained information better because I used to also get better grades then too.

I has an ouchie.
It's really windy here today in Silicon Valley. I was riding to work. Going 25 (according to Garmin). A gust lifted up my front end. Seriously, I got lift, and turned my front wheel a little. When my wheel touched the ground the fork snapped in half, broke. I tore up my arms something fierce. My heart rate monitor chest band is scraped out of commission (thank god I was wearing it and my chest is ok.) My fork snapped in half. My front wheel had a few spokes pull out of the hub. So I need a new wheel and fork. I've got some road rash and maybe micro tears in the muscles in my shoulders. All things considered, I'm alright.
It was an unpleasant experience, accentuated by the fact I've been waiting for a month to get my steer tube cut, which I finally got this morning. My poor, poor bike. She's only got some 500 miles. RIP(es) fork.

What material is your front fork made of? Carbon fiber or aluminum or something else? That sucks man. Didn't you just recover from a bad accident?
I'm on my way to recovery.... Fibula still broken. Doc made me promise not to crash.
Stupid freak accident. Carbon Fiber fork, though I fully believe this would have ruined any fork. Steel would have bent really far, Al would have bent a bit and cracked and CF just snapped. I've got a good 20K+ miles on carbon forks and can't hold anything against them, this was a freak accident.

You can't repair load-bearing carbon fiber. Boat hulls, surfboards, car hoods, all repairable to an extent.
But it is impossible to fix that fork in any way where you can use it again. There is no way to reweave the load bearing fibers so that they could take tension/compression.

I was thinking of jamming a good stick in there, maybe maple, and duct taping it together... you think not so much?
I see no reason that can't handle 50+ mph stresses.

Do you have a warranty on the frame? A number of carbon fiber bike frames have them (so long as you're the original owner).
Jokes aside, trying to use a repaired carbon fiber frame is a great way to seriously hurt yourself.

I've had the frame for about 500 miles. Got a new frame in May the day before I shattered my leg. Finally started riding it recently. I even finally got the steer tube cut today. Shop has been to busy for weeks. Cannondale should replace it, though they may try to recover their costs. If they try that I'm going to claim I think there is a problem with the forks. I've seen forum posts of this fork breaking like this. I figure at worst I'll pay some $3-400. Hopefully nothing. *sniffle* poor frame, I hardly new thee.
No kidding, I won't even ride a frame that's scored past the clear coat. I go WAY too fast to take those risks. Appreciate the advice though, in case I WAS that dumb. =P
Wouldn't it be funny to see though? A broken fork with sticks jammed in it with tape all around it?

If they won't let you drop it then i suggest to just try and find out of the school offer any sort of tutoring for that course/subject.
Math is one of those things that require a lot of repetition, and I've had my fair share of difficulties with Calculus. I found it to be a lot easier once i started going over the materials for a short amount of time everyday and try to do a question or two on my own.

You guys have fancy bikes. I can't imagine paying more than a hundred dollars for a part of a bike. To me a bicycle is supposed to be a cost-cutting instrument: a cheaper mode of transportation. Bicycling is a lot of fun too, but I've never been one to spend much money on fun.
My bicycle is a Frankenstein contraption made of parts from four different yard sale bicycles. I have a flashlight electrical-taped to the handlebars for a headlamp, my back brakes barely work, and my front brakes don't work at all. God, I love my bike.

For a basic bike that's true. But I primarily use mine to commute. It's what i bought it for, my goal being to pay it off with saved gas. In the meantime it's important that te bike is strong and fast so that it is a legitimate means of commuting. It's not something someone is likely to do if it takes all day. My ride to work is 45 miles round trip and if I'm feeling really strong that day I can do it in 2 hours round trip. At those speeds it's actually faster for me to ride to work than drive during rush hour. I've also commuted at least 6000 miles since I bought it, (8 months of riding, 4 off for a broken leg). So, my car (at best) gets 20 mi/gallon. That's 300 gallons. At $3/gallon that's $900 bucks. 3000 more miles and it's paid for.
To ride at night I have to bright Nite Rider headlights. One isn't bright enough when I go over 20. I charge them at work when I get in so that I don't use my power and use rechargeable AAA for the rear.
By all means I LOVE riding my bike. IT's the most fun thing in the world for me. But taking into account that I use it instead of driving does the cost make sense? And 1500 is really cheap for a bike. Also, I broke that bike and got a new much better frame so now I have a $3000 bike =D.
My bike's shifters are kaput. They are Shimano DXs on a Specialized mountain bike. From what I'm reading, these type of "quick shifters" fail a lot and are impossible to repair. Replacing them might be $100 or more. Currently I'm stuck with maybe 3 gears.

It's true you can't repair them. What you can do is go bike recycling. GO to a college campus, ride around during the day time and look for bikes that are locked up but a bunch of stuff has already been stolen. Like the wheels and the seatpost and saddle etc. Most of them will still have handlebars and shifters. Find your shifters or some that will work. In my mind that's not bike thievery that's reducing land fill.
Leathers would be way to heavy and hot. It's a risk I take riding and it's still worth it. Crashing at 25 messed me up but I'm mostly OK. I've crashed near 40 before and that was hell. I can hit 54 in a 30 right by my house, there are some hills in the east bay where I can regularly hit 60 and once in Orange County I hit 70. That is scary fast, as well as crash and die fast. Never again. You need to find a balance between weight of gear what they provide and temperature. Bike clothes already go a long ways towards protecting your body, assuming you aren't going too fast. When I mountain bike I may get more aggressive. When I go downhilling or it's 3AM and I'm wasted on an illegal trail that drops into Memorial stadium I'll wear armor.

3 KHS Flite Team frames (all in spring '03)
Simonetti Aluminum custom sprinters frame. (Down tube broke in the middle on a ride, looks like a can would when you tear it apart in your hands, a crack starting on the top of the tube in the middle, spirals all the way around and gets to the top again an inch from where it started)
Cannondale six13, the top tube was pulling out of the lug at the seat-tube/top-tube/seat-stay junction.

All failed w/o crashes encouraging failure.

A certain sum of money is invested at 10%. Twice that amount is invested at 8%. The total amount of interest from both investments is $91. How much is invested at 8%.
I'm sure there are some people who could do that problem relatively quickly. I, however, haven't touched a math problem in 4 years and only answered maybe 2 or 3 out of 30 correctly. I hope I did well enough on the other sections to balance everything out.

By the limited information, I'm assuming they aren't compounding the interest, so the formula should be simple:
91 = 1.1*x + 2*1.08*x
91 = (1.1 + 2.16)x
$27.91 = x
Since x is amount invested at 10%, that would mean that $55.82 is the amount invested at 8%

Wed, 11-18-2009, 08:47 PM
Assertn, what you calculated makes the $91 as the total return (principal + interest), and not just the interest.
A little late, but here it is anyway:
91 = 0.1*x + 0.08*2x
91 = 0.26x
x = 91/0.26 = 350
So amount invested at 8% is 2x = 2(350) = 700

Thinking of crazy driving ...
so my area's getting pounded tonight by what the weather folks are calling "nor-Ida" (because it's the intersection of a noreaster and the remnants of hurricane Ida. And I'm driving home at like 8:30, because I spent a bunch of time in the gym. Middle of a downpour, doing like 45 on the highway, and had three near misses in a stretch of 1000 feet. First was a guy in the left lane encroaching on mine, right next to me, which I had to swerve and hit the brakes to avoid a collision. Second was the aftermath of a previous collision, which involved 4 cars stopped in the middle two lanes of the four "through lanes". No flashers, no brake lights, just tail lights. Come on folks, put on your damned flashers if you're going to park in the middle of a busy highway!
Then as I slid around to avoid that, someone zips past me at about 85 and cuts me off, coming within about 6 inches of my front bumper. This while I'm down to the upper 30's, and going faster than most of the traffic.
Anyway, at least that last guy got pulled over a mile later, which made me happy. Probably woulda been better if the cop were back at the accident site cluing people in to the fact that there were two lanes blocked by wreckage though ...
I like driving, a lot more than taking public transit. But sometimes it's just like ... what the heck are these people doing, ya know?

Well I can bitch about that too....
In France, for many products, you have to wait 4 weeks to several months to get a part replaced... only after you spent weeks negociating with your french representative that the part is dead and under warranty and they have to replace it.
Then you wait long weeks/months, then it arrives in France, and then you have to negociate again for weeks to get the part from their company to you...
Goods usually come from china, via boat...
In the end, for some products, I found a better quality alternative directly from China, where they get their goods...
Things are:
Price is 1/10th or even 1/20th (I have one example even lower) the price paid in France, even with airmail...
I receive goods in about 10 days
I don't care if some fail on me, because I can fry 10 before it costs me the price of one here
If I have some fry on me, I only need 10 days at most to get a replacement if I have a shortage.
The person I work with in China is pleasant, has a relatively good english.
Representative in France, for same products are most of the time unpleasant, even more when there's an RMA involved... so Screw them, there's no meaning in ordering those parts from them other than being screwed yourself.

Yet even ICU, 4 bags of IV fluid, morphine, and something called Zofran won't stop Marik from posting release updates. Truly hardcore.

Oh, so that's why the Naruto release update was late.
I shall delete that hate mail and send you a get-well-soon card instead :p

Yeah, I had some wings from across the street. They gave me food poisoning, so I've been diagnosed with Gastroenteritis. I'm gonna stay away from wings for awhile.
Edit: @Kraco below: No, not yet.

Following up this post (http://forums.gotwoot.net/showthread.php?p=450991&postcount=759) I decided to go ahead with the order.
MS then tells me I will have to do a clean install rather than simply download the upgrade.exe since I'm using xp (for an additional $14 through the post). That's well and all, and since it's kind of necessary, I purchased the $50 license as well as the $14 CD.
After I checked out, I got redirected to the download page, which lists two options:
1) EXE - for upgrading with compatible OS
2) ISO - for clean installations.
^ BUT THEY DON'T TELL YOU THIS UNTIL AFTER YOU PAY NOW DO THEY?

bahha, I more tired than a pack mule.
I had a job in the university today. I was there to watch over some Psychometrics exams (an academic admission exam, sort of, like the SAT) taking place, and it took it's toll on me...
day started out good, there was an english-only exam, which was short, and no one interrupted, but then we had the real exam...
50 something people (who were all of the same minority group, woo-hoo!) acting like jerks and making a howl. everything took twice as much time for us as it did for other groups, and we finished more than an hour after everyone else.
I pooped, I crushed for 4 hours when I got home, and now I'm going to bed again..
also, they all had similar sounding names, which I can't pronounce well, so it felt like a memorial service (with extra emphasis on each syllable of the names: "JubRan JubRan", "AhMed AbuSaLim"...).
still, It pays well.

I discovered I had no internet last night. I'd already spent 10-15 minutes trying to repair my connection... trying wired, wireless, restarting the router... Then I realized the router was showing no internet connection so I called verizon and spent about 10 minutes in their automated system before being transferred.... TO HOLD!
I had to goto bed at some point, had been on hold for over 45 minutes. Woke up in the morning.... and had internet! but now I dont, and have to wait until tomorrow or the next day for a new router to arrive :( srsly.... BOOOO

So..verizon insists there's nothing wrong at their end? If not, a new router may not be your fix.

I have very rarely had any troubles with my connection, but the few times there have been, I have suffered from no wait times to catch a person and after the few typical questions the ISP has never tried to insist it's something on my side. Rather, they have always said they will check their own settings and systems (and that has always helped as well). Doesn't sound like this Verizon values its customers too highly.

well, the wireless doesn't seem to work at all.
It almost seems like a DNS issue, but then the router does lock up when you try to access it. I could get to yahoo, google, certain ebay pages, but most other pages wouldn't load.
Wireless doesn't broadcast... If the replacement router doesn't fix it I'm gonna be cranky!

My internet went out sometime on sunday night and I wasted an hour on hold before having to goto bed cause it was late.
My wife called on monday and they sent me an email w\ a UPS tracking number for a new router they were sending out to us.. ok! great. Tuesday, no router... owell, wait til wednesday.
My wife calls back yesterday and they tell her that the routers are not in stock and that it will not ship out until the 31st... are you fucking kidding me? no internet for 2+ weeks? that just doesn't work...
so, i jump on their website and do a tech support chat session and this guy assures me that the router actually shipped yesterday, despite ups's website not showing any results for the tracking number verizon gave me. The guy tells me it will arrive on wednesday for sure.
Wednesday/yesterday : No router... so, I give them a call and now this guy tells me close to what they told my wife before, the order shows pending and he doesn't know where the router is or if they're in stock, or on back order... despite this though, he goes on to tell me that the router will ship that night and get to me today... srsly?
my response to him was immediately to ask him why I've at that point been given 3 completely different answers to the same question.
Anyhow, my internet was back working somehow so i'm not too worried about it, but it was not working monday or tuesday.
On a plus note, they did offer my wife some kind of internet/tv package w\ 25/10mbps internet speed for $79...which I think I will do.

Today i lost all of my firefox tabs - that is 1 year worth of tabs(about 50-60, some of them are impossible to get back)...
My mother used mine pc, i warned her 5 fucking times, "watch out for pop-unders and close the main browser, the one with tabs, last" (she of course hates tabs and opens everything in new window...), and guess what? all tabs are gone, and the best part is - it was not her fault that all my tabs are gone, but in fact she closed the main browser first(tabbed one) - it is my fault for using the tabs and keeping them that way, and I'm the stupid one...
Can't they for once say "I'm sorry i messed up, its my fault" instead of telling me that it is my fault?

You know there's a function called "Bookmark all tabs"?
It may have saved you.

After my brothers and sister did that for the 10th time I password protected my session and told them to use the damn guest function.

Now it wont happen again, thanks to "about:config" in ff(don't mess up there), and bookmarking all tabs is bad idea for me - I've got too much bookmarks to look there to find anything. Why in the first place firefox allows pop-unders? It does not even have simple option to block them - you have to tweak variables in config manually.

Have you tried organizing your bookmarks into folders? Once I started doing that, I found that I actually started using bookmarks, rather than just making them for sites I'd only visit every six months.
You can even make a "Regular Tabs" folder or something like that.

When i organize something i spend more time searching there than just looking through chaotic list.
and here's my bitch - new year's party was not so good, even though there was one great girl..
Yet another bitch - my graphics card is broken...again.. goddamnit, i'm writing from my mum's laptop.

Xel : what kinda card did you have?
I haven't posted here in a while so I thought I would !
Movie Theater price gouging... pisses me off. I saw Avatar with my sister saturday and it was $4.50. 1 liter bottle of water? $4.50... that isn't my bitch though.
I went again yesterday because my wife and her brother didn't get to see it. We went to one theater and it was sold out, so then we went to another theater and wow... $9.50 per ticket? srsly? Then you get to the anal rape section that is the concessions... $6.50 for a "small" soda? $8 for a bag of popcorn?
I'm a thrifty guy so stuff like that pisses me off. same thing @ the gym... why would i pay $2.75 for 20oz of powerade if I can go next door and get a 32oz bottle for $1.25 ?
