I do the bins for my neighbours.

If memory serves, your neighbours are also your family's neighbours. Your opinion is only valid once you finally hit the road and leave your folks to eat the dust, finding your very own neighbours to either ignore, treat with rudimentary but cold politeness, or be friendly with. Or even hate.

I experienced that on Black Friday, Buff. After hours and hours of Skyrimming, when I went out into the real world with all the idiots and fools, I was very disappointed that I couldn't run a sword through anyone who got in my way.

Just saw a Pileated Woodpecker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pileated_Woodpecker_in_a_Tree.jpg) in my backyard woods, poking around a bunch of logs. For size comparison, these things are the size of large crows. I'd seen glimpses of them before flying through the woods, but this one stuck around for a good twenty minutes, so I got a real good look at the underside of the wings and it thwacking away on fallen logs and dead stumps.

Very cool.

Last night I saw Girl in a Coma in a small venue. I was about 11 feet in front of singer Nina Diaz and my heart ached with longing. She's so cool. I said hi to her after the show but couldn't say more than a sputtering "Really great show".

They ended their set then came back on for an encore and played their cover of Selena's Si Una Vez. Everyone went apeshit:

Wow, she's purdy. Not a fan of tatted chicks, but I'm sure it fits her lifestyle.

My friend asked for a $50 dutch oven pot for Christmas. I got her a $250 dutch oven pot instead which requires less maintenance, is easier to clean, and will last her the rest of her life, possibly until she gives it to her child as a family heirloom. The fact that I could upgrade for quality without worrying about the price makes me smile.

I got dressed to go out for dinner tonight. This year's summer has been really cool so far, and tonight it was lower-mid 20C (8C cooler than previous years) in my part of Australia.

As I walked outside with a shirt and some jeans that I haven't worn since spring, I felt really weird. I did not remember my pants feeling this way. I could not describe it.

Five minutes passed and I realised I felt like I wasn't wearing any pants.

It felt airy. My jeans felt baggy.

For the first time since starting my diet one month ago I felt actual results... and smiled.

I recently rediscovered the joy that is American consumerism at a Sam's Club (like Costco). The last time I went to one was something like 7-10 years ago and I don't recall the prices, selection, or quality being that great back then. Now, all 3 are awesome!!! I've been 3 times in the past week or so and spent over $100 each time, shopping for one.

Yesterday I got an email from someone at a huge marketing/PR company saying she got my resume from some other person I had interviewed with. I called her and talked to her for 10 minutes, and she had me fill out an online application. Literally 2 hours later someone else from the company calls and starts asking me stuff, and I just figured that it was a follow up. About 3 minutes in, I realized I was being interviewed for the position I had just filled out like 120 minutes ago. They actually wanted me to come in for my 1st "in person" interview, but it was too short notice, so I scheduled it one Tuesday. That was the fastest response I have ever gotten from a job application, and this position would be what I really want to do at a very well known company.

I ordered Mafia II from Amazon. The product features clearly states, "Includes all of the downloadable content available for the standard edition, adding more than double the original gameplay. Featuring new storylines, new playable characters, and new city-based quests with leaderboard challenges."

I was expecting the Platinum Hits version, but that's not what I received. I tell Amazon about this error and they overnight me another copy. Today, I received the original version again. I start a chat with an Amazon rep named Cristina, and she decides to give me a refund and lets me keep the game. :)

Cristina: I'm sorry for this.
Let me see what I can do.
Me: Can you verify that you guys even have the one with the downloadable content like the features say?
Because they've sent me the original twice.
Cristina: Oh, I'm sorry for that.
I'll be needing more minutes to research on this.
Me: k
Cristina: I'm really sorry for this.
Would you like a replacement or refund for the item?
Me: Do they have the one with the downloadable content or not?
Or is the original all they send?
If they don't, then they need to change the product features.
Cristina: I will forward this to our higher department so that they can remove this on our website.
Me: I want a refund unless I can get the one with the downloadable content.
Cristina: Alright, let me now process the refund for you because I'm afraid that you might get same item. You don't have to return the wrong item.
I've successfully processed the refund for you. I'll send you an email confirmation about this.

Amazon is the online Walmart... running Mom and Pop stores and local retailers out of business because they cannot compete with Amazon's prices and free shipping. When you order from Amazon you don't have to pay sales tax unless you're in California (I think), so you save even more.

While it's nice to save money now, you're supporting a monster that will makes things more expensive and quality of life worse in the long run.

Things will only get expensive if Amazon becomes the sole player. As long as there is at least one more competitor, Amazon will be forced to stay competitive. Driving mum and pop shops out of business is a side effect of increasing efficiency that is often found in capitalist economies. Those that simply don't perform well enough to accommodate the market must go.

Supermarket chains did that years ago.

As for quality of life worsening, that's where government instruments such as effective progressive income tax are supposed to play their parts. I've heard that the USA doesn't tax the higher brackets enough for this to effectively redistribute wealth.

While it's nice to save money now, you're supporting a monster that will makes things more expensive and quality of life worse in the long run.You mean the monster that has a "See All Available Sellers" button as an option for products listed on their site, those other sellers often being Mom and Pop Stores or local retailers with access to FedEx or the USPS?

Half the things I bought for Christmas gifts came from Amazon Affiliates, many of whom operate small stores in their local areas. Over three-quarters of the hard to find books I've bought in the past two years came from an Affiliate (Texas, Washington, Oregon, Missouri, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Florida, etc.)

Face it, Amazon is keeping a lot of these people in business, not the other way around. Amazon drives chains out of business (Borders for the most recent).

Btw, you'd pay sales tax in Kentucky, where most of the items shipped to me directly from Amazon come from. Any place where Amazon has a physical presence. If the States get their way, we'll all be paying sales tax soon.

I've only used Amazon UK, and although I've used it for a bunch of times, both Amazon directly or the affiliates (one of them being as far as a bookstore in NY), I've only resorted to Amazon after noticing nobody is selling what I was looking for or the item was grossly overpriced in my parts. I don't feel bad at all, having had no choice.

Hey good for you buying from some smaller shops to make yourself feel less like a corporate shill. Amazon's prices still undercut most of those sellers and they also have free shipping which most of the small shops can't afford to do. Amazon is putting all competition out of business.

Never thought I would agree with you twice in one month Ani, but I so share the sentiment.

However I don't agree with you about Amazon, in some ways they are supporting Mom and Pop stores. But it all depends on the type of store (product being sold) and what's the local. Also Amazon charges tax on states too;

The amount of tax charged depends upon many factors, including the identity of the seller, the type of item purchased, and the destination of the shipment.
Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the states of Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, or Washington are subject to tax.
For sales tax purposes, electronically delivered products (e-books, e-documents, and electronically delivered software) are considered to be shipped to your credit card billing address.
No sales tax is charged when purchasing gift cards; however, purchases paid for with gift cards may be subject to tax.

No, I "earned" $15k last year. Minus all of the deductions entitled to me, I only owed taxes on $5k. I paid $500 in taxes all year, so it's kind of amazing to get a tax return of $1500 on taxes I didn't pay.

Think of it as a small scale Mitt Romney, except I got back more taxes than I paid, while he's still paying 15% taxes. He's a sucker.

Turbotax is the safest, cheapest, and easiest way if you don't have a lot of income or weird sources of income or deductions to make. And they're up on the latest tax code so you won't miss out on any savings. If you do make a lot of money or have complex taxes, then get an accountant.

I bought a cheap stud finder today (stud as in construction work, not biological sense). A funny little device. Though I'm not sure if it's going to make installing shelves any easier. The amount and width of the positive signals confused me further. Who knows what's inside those walls.

Don't know much about European walls, but you can usually tell by the age of the building what's in them. It also depends on the quality of the stud finder itself. Be careful of the length of screw you put in, might get a shock if the wiring is really old.

It's a bathroom wall I was studying. I can actually predict electric wiring quite well, but yeah, it has that functionality as well, as cheap as it was. I'm a bit more worried about water pipes. But mostly I'm worried about the drywall breaking...

Sharp drill, go slow, high quality screws, and if you're really worried about it, use some of that blue painter's tape before you drill, then take it off after you're done (who cares if little bits of tape went into the wall with the screws).

Some random stuff that won't suffer from being stored in the bathroom. The shelf itself (or two of them, should I install both) were made by cannibalizing my old desk and are consequently really heavy. I originally believed the walls separating the bathroom from the rest of the apartment were particle board, not that useless drywall, and thus able to carry any manner of reasonable weight. I guess I could opt to use lighter shelves, but honestly I went through so much work to saw, sand, and repaint the desk board that I can't abandon them.

But hey, thinking about this isn't making me smile! Only the little stud finder device did!

Well, I think a guard like Lin would thrive in the D'Antoni system. I actually kind of liked the Knicks' chances this year before they actually started playing. Hopefully Baron can come back and play well and give Lin some time to rest. I am kind of concerned how Carmelo will fit into all of this though.

That's cool. If you found multiple studs you can run a lateral brace (piece of wood horizontally) and use triangle shelf brackets (2 or 3 depending on how long the shelf is) it should comfortable hold more that 80 lbs (including the weight of the wood being used). It won't matter if it's drywall that is exposed to moisture because the weight would be held by the studs and the pressure will be distributed along the drywall by the lateral brace.

p.s. 80 lbs might be pushing it but will hold anything you decided to put on it.

Then colour me impressed. I also get shitty speeds on 3G, though I'm not sure if it's the network, the notoriously slow browser on BB's OS5, or my crappy phone (my phone itself, not the model or all BB as a whole).

My phone gets crappy speeds on 3G because my data packet with the operator limits it to 384kbit/s... My 3G USB wireless modem for the laptop gets speeds that look very much st33v's speeds, though, since it has no contract restrictions, only those dictated by the device and the network (and the networks are always overbooked, naturally, for maximum profits).

Pour some honey and apple cider vinegar in a jar and let the bastards fly in, then cap it and watch them drown in the sweet and sour pool of death. Unfortunately no, so you have to keep your eye on it. I've seen other homemade traps where you cut the top off a small juice bottle then invert it into the bottom half, making a funnel that is easy for the buggers to enter, but hard to get out.

But it is entertaining to watch them enter the trap and wait for the perfect moment to spring it on them. Makes it hard to read though while waiting.

I use a shopping bag as a small bin liner. It probably holds no more than 3-5L, so that does me fine. I recycle as well, but don't compost. Flies aren't a problem with an intact flyscreen and all for all our windows/doors, but I'd imagine roaches would be - hence why I throw shit out after dinner is done and all.

I want to find a group to go trail riding with (I assume you mean mountain biking).

I got thrown on my head in Judo practice yesterday. My neck is now stiffening up nicely and I'm getting a headache because of the muscle tension in my neck and shoulders. I'm smiling because at least I went to club instead of going home to sleep like I wanted to at the time.

It is fun, but demanding. It's hard keeping up with these kids (most of them are 18-22 years old and full of energy). Starting late with the club puts me further behind the 8 ball, since they seem to mostly be an insular bunch and the core guys (besides the instructors) aren't too welcoming it seems. Feels like a treehouse club where outsiders aren't welcomed. But still, it's a great workout that really develops your body in ways lifting weights at the gym can't. It's cardio as well, so that's another plus.

If anyone is looking to start a martial art, I'd suggest Judo above pretty much all others. It's a great combination of wrestling, grappling, movement, understanding momentum, improving reaction time, and cardio that other martial arts can't compete with.

Got my mic working, but the sound quality isn't that great, added some friends and owning the board on Ghost Recon.

edit:

For anyone else that is having bluetooth Mic problems. The Headset that I have is the Rocketfish Model: RF-GPS31204. Follow the instructions in the Manual for initial set up. During game play press the PS button on the controller > Settings> accessories> Manage bluetooth devices> highlight the device and press the triangle button for options> make sure it's connected> go back to accessories> Audio settings and make sure the mic's input and output is set to your device also check adjust the mic levels.

It doesn't tell you this in the manual.

It should work and apparently I have to make sure the device is connected every time I go online because it doesn't automatically sync or maybe it does but I haven't found out how to do it yet.

Anyways that is what I figured out from trial and error, not to bad for someone that hasn't used a PS3 or any other console for a few years.

Oh my God.

I tried to update my BIOS today foolishly using a non-designated utility (to flash BIOS) when I thought I bricked my motherboard. After spending about four hours trying to fix it, I managed to do it by reseting CMOS and playing with the motherboard battery (one instance where I drove a screw driver into the battery) and now my computer works (couple of "no disk errors" at startup that can easily be solved through reformatting at a later date, I suppose) ... and the BIOS is updated.

Nothing feels any different, but it feels damn good as a technologically impaired person to do some playing around with the hardware.

I've never liked updating the BIOS, though at the same time I'm sometimes disappointed that my mobo hasn't been given any attention since 2010.

I certainly never liked it either, especially since I needed to reinstall Win7 in the beginning because updating the bios screwed the installation beyond repair. However, I did update the bios to the most recent available for my mobo quite recently, this time going an extra mile to ensure it couldn't possibly spoil the Win installation by detaching the system HD until I had gone through the settings in the new bios version until perfect satisfaction. Afterwards Windows booted significantly faster, without a long wait generated by whatever hardware driver clash that was always present with the old bios. So, it was worth it despite the mental stress.

But they say you shouldn't update the bios unless there's something wrong and a new bios might fix it.

Received, unboxed, hooked up then listened to my new DAC today. :)

The Onkyo DAC-1000's an import model so it's connected to a 100v step-down transformer under my table. The transformer wasn't as quiet mechanically as I had hoped it would be, but that's not exactly unexpected neither. It's way quieter than my PC currently is anyway, so it shouldn't matter that much.

The DAC itself... it's good. Depth of soundstage/separation is perhaps the biggest factor that's first noticable (coming up from an Essence ST soundcard), followed by the lingering highs. The Essence ST had more low end volume, but the Onkyo presented it in a more refined fashion.

The overall experience isn't unlike going from MP3 to loseless really.. just lots of little differences that combine to sharpen the presentation into bliss. And just like that transition, initially the more refined file/DAC will seem somewhat anaemic at first due to the increased clarity.

Since I'm running the signal out of the SPDIF out (PC -> Essence ST Coaxial Out -> Onkyo Dac-1000 -> Talisman T-33H -> Senn HD650), I'll be able to use Dolby Headphone again for games. I previously ran the analogue-output from the soundcard's speaker-out instead of its headphone-port since the RCA gave a cleaner signal by bypassing the headphone port's internal amp, but the Essence is only capable of Dolby Headphone if you run the signal out of the Headphone port (or, as the current case is, you select the headphone port but output digitally through SPDIF).

Luckily I bought some cables beforehand though, since the DAC, strangely enough, didn't even come with a USB cable for connectivity.

New toys always put a smile on my face too. I've been looking at an Onkyo home theatre system, but the longer I wait the higher the price goes.

What exactly does a DAC do? Does it allow you to connect a PC to a home theatre sound system or is there more to it?

Buffalobiian
Mon, 06-04-2012, 09:09 AM
What exactly does a DAC do? Does it allow you to connect a PC to a home theatre sound system or is there more to it?

Its core function is to convert a digital audio signal (1s, 0s from CDs, files etc) to analogue (waveform). Onboard sound cards, ipods.. pretty much everything that outputs sound for speakers/headphones from a digital source have a dac chip of some form inside them as sound-producing things (diaphragms) need an analogue waveform.

Quality comes in afterwards then (EMI shielding, power supply, components used in the analogue output path afterwards) and isn't just dependent on the chip itself inside. That's what I was mainly going for.

You can connect a PC to a home theatre receiver using onboard already since they all have optical-out these days. Those receivers themselves function as a DAC as part of their job anyway, so you can think of my DAC as a high-quality, 2-channel receiver.

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/8937/27fb6dderearlrg.jpg

It can take a signal from various sources (mine has 2x Coax, 2x optical, 1 EBU and 1 USB) and output an analogue signal (in my case, to a headphone amp, then headphones). Mine also has an optical OUT that can pass the signal to something else if I wanted to (such as a surround sound home theatre system, like you suggested).

Right now, I've been accepted into chemical engineering with a minor/specialization in Energy and the Environment. The workload for chemical engineering at my school is relatively low compared to the more rigorous mechanical engineering program here. I may drop my minor/specialization if things get too heated, but it's very unlikely because I have a strong interest in green technology and efficiency. If all else goes wrong with my studies, I can try switch to a different engineering major (probably civil or mechanical) if I really don't like chemical engineering, but that's unlikely as well.

Thanks for the warning, Ani.

Yes one should have a back up plan. That much is a given and Ryllharu said absolutely nothing to contradict that. You however stated
and he simply pointed out that that is not true.

:o. Wait a minute of all people I should know I cannot win this one so I am just walking away now
You of all people know life is suffering, so how can you doubt shit will get fucked up? Also, I said "if it gets a chance". If you don't have a backup plan, that's just encouraging the universe to fuck with you.

You should know you cannot win this one because you didn't come correct. I covered all my bases.

Fuck it dude, you should go into petroleum engineering and get busy on those tar sands. There's gold in them thar sands.

That's the plan!

In this notoriously "evil" province of Canada, most engineers of any discipline will work in the petroleum industry here because of the big bucks. There's actually a specific petroleum engineering major we have at my school dedicated solely for the exploration and exploitation of oil and gas and they get paid more than any type of engineering in this province - the same thing should apply with the US in that the highest-paying engineer job is petroleum engineering. I decided not to go into that major because chemical engineering is so much more diverse and conventional as it can open up pharmaceutical, biomedical and nanotechnological options for me.

I plan to work in the petroleum industry for the early part of my career until Canada starts seeing more green engineering in this country because we all know that in the long run, oil and gasoline isn't going to last us forever despite some claims of oil being able to last for another 400+ years. When you hear news like this (http://www.energyefficiencynews.com/articles/i/5180/?cid=3), it'd be a shame not to pick up anything that touches up on alternative technology or improving on concurrent systems in terms of efficiency. I can always do a masters in another department of engineering as well so I can make full use of my specialization.

Nonetheless, thanks a lot, guys!! I really appreciate your well-wishings!

I've been to Home Depot twice in two days. Best two visits to a Home Depot I've ever had among all the times I've had to go one of the stores over the 15 years they've been in my area. Super friendly staff helping me out left and right.

Plus, I brought strawberries into work as a snack, and they were really good ones.

I'm a bit of a homebody, so Home Depot and BB&B are two of my favorite stores. There are never enough staff available at Home Depot to help, and those that are there spend too much time with some customers and can't help the rest.

Yeah, that's usually the case (particularly in the one with the horrible layout, which was the first one in my area 15 years ago), but not at this store. Which I had never been to before Tuesday.

You have to admit though, half the time they're spending "too much time with some customers" is because that customer they are helping is a newbie DIYer who is trying to buy 18 AWG wire to install a ceiling fan, has never heard of a square drive bit, or doesn't realize what a miracle SharkBites are.

And yeah, the guy cutting PVC knows you're making a potato canon. Listen to him, he'll make sure you buy the right parts and glue.

I definitely understand the "you are my only customer" mentality they try to carry, answering all questions until the customer is satisfied. But it makes it tough for customers who just have a quick "where do I find this product" question, which is usually what I ask. I also try not to hog the staff on busy days or when others are obviously waiting for help. Others are not so considerate.

Yes, but you can only help a DIY'er so much, and even then there are a lot of things better left to professionals. If it's one more source of info, then I'm all for it. But people who expect to learn all they need for a project by asking the guy at Home Depot will end up calling a repairman or half-assing it. From what I've seen, they mostly half-ass it.

A workstation is more ergonomic than sitting hunched over a laptop. The screen is too low that way, which messes up your back/neck. Elevating the laptop makes it more difficult to use the laptop keyboard, but regardless, my mechanical keyboard is much more comfortable and efficient than the laptop one anyway. You can feel the tactility in this video. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ou3O2uPLXlU)

I rarely use the numpad enough to justify having it, plus it lets me reduce the distance of my hands between the keyboard and the tablet (tablets really take up a lot of space).

I bought a Galaxy S2 smartphone today. cost me an arm and a leg and quite a hassle. bastards jacked the price up..

I bought a new laptop earlier in the week. (Samsung NP900X4C).

It's a sexy piece of hardware. While I did feel a little annoyed that it went for 1400AUD at one store for a week before our financial year concluded, it was still nice to get it for 1600AUD vs the RRP of 1900AUD (with the next cheapest option at 1800AUD).

I also got a nicer pick as well since some models apparently contained an inferior sandisk100 SSD, but mine was a fast (and presumably more reliable) samsung in-house model. Still wondering if I want to upgrade it to 256gb as per the customised computer thread tho.

The display's super bright. I wonder whether I could go dimmer when I use it on its lowest setting only to find out that it is indeed as dim as it would go. Maximum brightness is blindingly bright. Even if I used it in direct sunlight it can be painful to look at. 6/8 brightness is already enough to combat the sun.

The only worry is the power adapter, since it has a small little projection to fit into the small female socket on the side of the laptop - as you'd expect from something this small that doesn't have Apple's magnetic connection. You have to hope no one trips over it while you're working.

Oh, and IRC works at uni now. That made me smile too.

I know I don't contribute much to the general discussion side of the forum but I hope you don't hold that against me too much. I think the main reason why I haven't been, especially this thread, is that I haven't had much of anything to really smile about. I been an addict for years now but I finally been getting clean the last few months. And today what made me happy was that I was able to go out and have a good time with a few friends and have a couple beers.... not that alcohol was ever my drug of choice and was far from ever abusing it.... but its nice to just know I have control over my addiction and can enjoy myself like everyone else now.

So today what made me smile was waking up with a purpose, to do my job, look into school, and then go out tonight to a pool hall/club and danced my ass off. I've always liked to dance and I been doing it alone in my room for so long now I think I'm pretty well versed in the art of the dance lols... but tonight me and my friend Corrin just got out there and danced our asses off. At first it was just us two out there and everyone else sorta lurking around.... then more people started to come and started getting loose and getting into it with us. Eventually the dancefloor area was packed (due to more people showing up too of course) but it still felt awesome for me, someone with anxiety especially about my appearance let alone dancing in public... but I just let go of it all, and with only a few cups of beer to help along the way...

But it was a great feeling dancing with a whole group of people I never met before and just going up to random groups of girls and dancing with them. Even better feeling when one came up to me and started saying "you must be on something cause you look like you're having such a good time" ....Nope, I was just enjoying life. For the first time in a long time. I wasn't even worried bout getting laid or any of that kid nonsense.

So to TL:DR today what put a huge smile on my face was simply enjoying myself and letting go of my anxiety to get on that dance floor and make it my home. And also being able to come here and share it with you guys. Thanks for that.

I am not in need of money at all(student loans), savings in bank account. Not sure if I should try to sell or not.

It's been more than one year but finally getting this back november 6th. Feels awesome. Ended up not selling and the entire thing has been really painful to keep track off because of news sites trying to get hits by claiming stuff that isnt important is important and similar, in the end I just gave up following. I don't think that means much. I have eaten at Pizza Hut twice in my life and the only thing that "impressed" me was the other time when I ordered a small sized pizza (I don't remember their exact terminology anymore) and they brought me a bigger one by accident. It is definitely oily. I'm not exactly sure what consistency you're looking at when you say "fried", but it probably sounds right.

I generally eat the medium, thin or stuffed-crust bases. I used to eat the thick one because it filled you up the most for your money, but I later learned of the amount of oil that you put on the bottom as lubricant, as well as all the energy in the dough.

It's mostly sprayed on the crust, where the cheese doesn't sit.

I agree about the cheese. In fact, the thickness of the base impacts relatively little to the total calorie content of the pizza, if the their online tables are reputable.

I love the idea of stuffed crust and ordered it every chance I got, but the end result was always disappointing. The cheese was never soft and gooey like in the commercials, it was always stringy and thick. Even heating it up didn't get it to where you were enjoying eating a cheesy breadstick.

Wow. Love how this inspired an entire discussion about pizza. That's my smile for today. Yeah I agree with pretty much everything you guys said. Ani is actually right, when it comes to mass produced pizza Papa John's is the best I've had. I don't know why most people don't understand that the crust is the best part of the pizza, stuffed or otherwise. Someday I have to get one of those people who don't even eat the crust on their pizza to explain that whole thing to me.

I have had Pizza hut twice and it is the worst pizza I have ever eaten. The first time it was oily and runny and didn't even taste like pizza and the second time it just looked like soup so I didn't even bother trying to eat it. They are probably in need of financial analysts especially after such an oil spill mess. They should also get a public image analyst, but that was never BP's cup of oil.

From my knowledge, they're opening a financial facility in each major city on the gulf coast to access their financial situation in the states.

That's where i come in. If i get the position, I'll need to move to Dallas and work with a group of financial and market analyst.

Great job DBZ.

Things not looking promising Bill?

I suppose it's not too worrying since that cut only applied to my state, so perhaps relocation can be a way out. There's a preference system here that puts citizens before international students so they're the ones being hit the hardest.. but I'm not sure if that only applies to internships or RMOs as well.

I think I finally got the power steering fixed on my car, after over 4 weeks of messing with it. I would have fixed it sooner or just let a shop deal with it but I didn't need the car so I tackled it myself and took my time. You'd be surprised how elaborate a power steering system is, and your modern car can't run without it (it can, but not for long since you risk seriously damaging the pump and steering rack if fluid isn't circulating). It feels good to fix something like this yourself, though I had periods of self-doubt and frustration where I almost just gave in and took it to a shop.

In a freely distributed local newspaper today there was an article about a guy "seeking perfect sound", like the title put it. I thought maybe he's something like Bill - until I started to read the actual article. It turns out the dude recently spent 60,000 euros to get new stereo speakers. 26,000 of it (yes, twenty-six thousand) he used in the speaker cables, which the article described as short, to boot. The price was so high, the dude explained, because the cables were handmade of gold, silver, and "space metal".

Apparently he had visited a hifi convention and some storekeepers had convinced him that anything less will make the sound unpure.

No wonder a couple of summers ago I saw a Hummer equipped with a subwoofer the size of a freezer in front of a hifi store, bearing the store's stickers. If they find lots of suckers like this guy, money must be flowing in.

Yeah, everyone knows you're supposed to use directional (input and output labeled), solid core, nitrogen isolated, triple-layer alternating-polarized sheathed cables that have solid gold connectors.

Anything less would be...uncivilized.

Some dude approached me in the gym locker when i was totally naked and asked me for tips on how to get an ass like mine.

I was weirded out until the point i realized i had been complimented, and then told the dude about squats.

actually, my style is more 'middle sized fish in a very small pond'. which makes me look large in comparison. I'm not nearly bulk enough to run with shark. so while I'm about ten years older and 20 pounds heavier than most of the kids in prison, that "advantage" is offset by the fact that the kids there have been in more brawls last month than I have been in my life. So, yeah.

besides, with my personality I'd get shanked in my first week there. heck, it's a surprise i wasn't shanked yet.

Realizing that I wouldn't have to go to work during the snowstorm tomorrow, because I had already put in enough hours for the week as a result of preparation for something else that had fallen through at the last minute.

Got a second dose when I found a snow rake at the first store I tried.

I complain about long papers too. It's not that I can't write so many words, but that the number of references required (and hence the number of outside papers I'm supposed to read) increases proportionally with it. All that means more time and effort.

Anything less than 1500 words is okay. The 12 page assignment on earthquakes back in Grade 09 was one of my favourite assignments though. It had the biggest sense of accomplishment.

You would probably hate my school then.

To graduate, i had to do a 60 pages financial analysis of Apple and find at least 40 credible sources (30 Academic/10 Professional) to back my claims.

I can't say i blame you though, doing research is always the most annoying part of writing any paper.

In my two health-related degrees, I don't think I've had to write anything more than 1500 words. Keeping it concise is actually our main concern, because by the time we've written what we want to write after the research, we were outside of the +/-10% leeway for the word limit.

Thankfully in my engineering course i don't have to write papers - we are usually just doing calculations on measurements done by us.

In my country, we are expected to be able to write as well as count/memorize/theorize/philosophize, so we have to take 2-3 courses with a writing focus. The classes are typically in your own field/degree plan but require you to learn how to research, write, cite, and express your ideas in text. I think it makes you a more well-rounded student. I had to write a 40-50 page report detailing our final project, a capstone sort of thing.

Also, as Ani pointed out, most US universities demand a well-rounded curricula to graduate. I wrote at least one 12-page paper a semester for one class or another.

Thanks to junior-high/middle school and high school, I can bang out 5-paragraph persuasive essays like no tomorrow. Helped in college, where I usually had to write 3 in under an hour for my literature/philosophy electives during exams.

In body citations make research and references in a paper a joke these days. When I started doing research papers in my last years of junior high, they were still making us do footnotes.

edit:
Being able to write large quantities of text and convey oneself well is a vital skill. It makes it trivially easy to coerce someone into agreeing with you.

Of course, that only works when they actually read it, not just skim it. :D

To Australians this is a general skill that doesn't need to be taught at university.

We're not incompetent. We're lazy. (goes for the markers who would have to read 500x12pages as well) ;)
