In my test today, there were two pharmaceutical calculation questions where the answer to the first question is used to work out the second. Both were multiple choice. I got an answer to the first, and when I worked out the second, the answer was complete nonsense. Obviously I was wrong. I didn't have any idea on how to go about the first question anymore.
Then I used all the possible answers provided for Question 2, worked backwards and got all the possible values of "k", which is the answer to Question 1. Only one set of answers matched.

I finally got to see Buckethead live last night along with That One Guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHlDfejCHkc). As I was looking for things for my Halloween costume last month, I found out that he was going to be playing in Austin, so I've been looking forward to that ever since.
It was a pretty exciting show, and he played my favorite song of his! I also got a pumpkin mask from him when he handed out presents mid-show. I should have brought a present for him :(.
Edit:
Hah, this makes me smile too. Less than 24 hours later, there's already loads of youtube videos up from last night:

I just bench pressed my current weight for the first time ever today. Also I now weigh 176-177 pounds.
I impressed an Asian kid in the gym.
Damn it feels good to be a gangsta .
Animeniax
Wed, 11-19-2008, 11:12 PM
Damn that's impressive Xan! What were you benching when you first started lifting?
I weighed myself at the gym last week and found out I've dropped 6 lbs in the last month and a half. Kind of disappointing since I've been trying to get to 170lb. At least it's all fat that I'm losing. I'm back down to a 31-32 waist and all my pants sag.
No one else is impressed because everyone else around here is in top physical shape (from PT) or on steroids.

Damn that's impressive Xan! What were you benching when you first started lifting?
Probably about 115-125. I actually don't remember very well since I used to lift kind of haphazardly. I know that before I started my current routine I was doing about 135 consistently.
I can also squat and deadlift more than my bodyweight now, but I'm not happy about those because they've been stagnating lately. No gains for about 4 weeks :(.
[No one else is impressed because everyone else around here is in top physical shape (from PT) or on steroids.
I wouldn't feel discouraged. Every small improvement is worth celebrating. Many people would think my minor accomplishments are nothing, but I'll pat myself on the back anyway. Keep a positive attitude about it.

It not made me smile today.. but today i'm able to post it. i had to sleep for not having any in this weekend.
I was at anime convention this weekend. It was awesome, there was cosplay(only 2 good costumes, rest were typical death note misa-misa or L), Rock Band(guitar hero got better guitar line and easier to read than RB - but still it was awesome. I won one h-manga as the best band(i was only player that could handle expert without any problems)), AMV room, all narutards were in separate naruto room, Soul Calibur IV competition(I had 5th place from 20 people), Taiko(best game ever - its stupid, weird, and idiotic when you look at it - but try to play it and you are instantly hooked up), UltraStar(not my fav - but some girls were awesome, by looks and singing :]), DDR/PIU(there were some techical problems with PIU(fried ram) but it started up late in night(like 2am), by friend won bishounen contest(he had got pantsu as reward).
So i wasted 2 days playing Rock Band, Taiko, Soul Calivbur IV, watching cosplay, having fun, watching anime, having fun, and did i mention the having fun?
Well there were 2 weird things:
1) Relligion classroom - instead "Confesion is the way to heaven" there is now "Naruto is the way to hell" and some satan and dead pikachu pics on the blackboard.
2)one guy had epilepsy attack - he have been playing tekken 5, 0,5m from 17' TV for 10 hours - freaky.
Overall: Awesome
next year i will cosplay a rape-monster, and if the ask me why i choose it i will anwser "Because i feel that we are alike" - can't wait to see their faces!

Congrats man. When I was in school, I found that I'd always pass the tests that I thought I had failed and failed the tests that I thought I had aced. Stupid murphy's law.
Last night I did a net search for some buddies from high school to see what they were up to. One buddy was recently arraigned for battery charges when he attacked a guy who was cheating with my buddy's girlfriend. Another buddy is a manager for financial services for a major airline, the last guy I'd ever expect to be a manager, especially for an accounting department. I spent the next few hours thinking about how my life in the past 7 years stacks up to theirs.

Yeah, I bought it specifically to play World of Warcraft. But, at it's core, it's the MX-518 mouse with a few pricegrade upgrades. Add to that a D-pad on the left side of the mouse, two buttons on the right side (though it looks more like 1, if you find a picture of it), and two mousewheel flanking buttons. All this, without disturbing the MX-518 design and functionality. This mouse is damn near perfect for just about any game. Definitely put a smile to my face.

What made me smile today? Today just waking up made me happy, but knowing that I had to get out of bed made me kinda sad. But I was smiling once again when I came out and saw that the sun as out and the it was a very nice day, a bit cold but nice nevertheless; even the cold can be nice when it is constant and appreiate .
Today I was just in a good mood I guess, just know that it was a new year another day i get to live; not that i am dying or anything, was a good thing.
Does it sound weird, that I am actually happy that i am approaching an age closer to the way that i feel. Does it sound weird that I am conversing and interacting with people that i consider to be worthwhile, at the same time i am not considered a kid at the same time.
It's a new year another day and my thoughts are a bit more clearer than they were a year ago.
I am finally waking down a path that i consider to be one that i actually want travel and not one that i am force to drag my feet on.

Thanks, but I watched Bamboo Blade before, and I quite enjoyed it.
As for the fight, it started off as the teacher just quietly nails him in one strike. The guy tried to attack the teacher from the side, but he blocked it and countered, which is why countering has become one of my favorite moves. :D

Kendo is different from real sword fight, as you practice on the grace of your sword's movement rather than the brute force. Agility is required for kendo, as well as stamina.

Awesome. One of my Spanish professors made a similar slip last semester. He was explaining how English speakers can hear the difference between certain consonants, regardless of whether or not they are aspirated. He gave the following three examples:
Top
Tot
Tock
When he said them out loud with his back turned to us, it came out differently than he intended:
Top
Tot
Cock
He made that mistake 3 times within a span of 10 minutes. My chest hurt so much from holding in the laughter.

I watched Asterix and Obelix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asterix) cartoon in my French class (in English language) and I must say: the dub is beyond terrible. They even made the announcement at the beginning, "When you are watching this cartoon, the lip-syncing might not match the words that we speak..." My French teacher later showed us the Asterix and Obelix movie, which was way better than the dub of the cartoon. That just made me smile.

I work as a projector operator in a movie theatre and today me and my colleague got the instructions to montage a couple of trailers before the Bollywood movie Chandi Chowk To China. My colleague did the montage on the movie whilest I went checking on other rooms. Suddenly we recieved message that the wrong movie was being shown... A grave mistake for a almost full room of 495 seats. We swiftly stopped and started the right one. Later on, when I was on my way to do some tech solving, our theatre manager called me to him and asked me if I was the one who arranged the Bollywood movie. I replied; "Nope, it wasn't me!" innocently, with my hands up.
I turned around and he pushed me in the back, aggravated, while I walked away, smiling... :)

The infamous "pause" hack in Warcraft III has been around for quite some time. Even though Blizzard is trying their best at fixing it, many people are still victimized by this lethal hack. It pauses the game three times in the beginning, then all of your commands and graphics are "locked" on screen, meaning they stay there forever. You can't move your screen with your mouse, but you can move it with your keyboard; you can't drag a box around to select units, but you can click them individually; you can't right-click on items, but you can use your keyboard. I managed to beat someone with "pause" hack, and that made me smile.

I finally saw the last of a very bitter break-up today. I hadn't spoken to or seen my ex-girlfriend in over a month, until last night. I tried to confront her to make peace, to no avail. She told me to go away and cursed me out.
After it became painfully obvious that she hated me now and wanted absolutely nothing to do with me, I sent her a facebook message telling her I'd like to be her friend again some day. A word of warning: Never do that. Now she's severed all contact with me and resents me for being annoying.
The smiling part comes in just after I went through this. My favorite roommate who had moved out at the end of last semester came in at 3 in the morning to get the rest of his stuff. He was just the person I needed to see. I nearly cried.
It's quite bittersweet, feeling absolutely alone and lost, and at the same time knowing that you have mountains of friends who care about you and you can talk to. Makes me smile. The healing begins now.

Garden Spiders are pretty cool to have around, mainly because they do helpful things like protect your plants from other insects. It's "fresh sushi", prepared on the day. It was just getting to the end of the day, so they packed it all into containers and wanted to get rid of them. They were of okay quality, though the stuff wasn't really that "fresh" for fresh sushi. I've had better.

I've been playing video games at work, specifically Gears of War 2 on insane mode, so I have to repeat levels a few times before I can beat them. So lately I've been turning away user requests for help and just generally being belligerent to people, mostly because they keep interrupting me when I'm on my 5th attempt trying to kill some grub boss, and partly because their requests are not following procedure and are usually idiotic support requests ("my computer won't turn on, even if I keep pressing the [on] button on the monitor" type questions).
Today some managers asked me if I was stressed out, looking for reasons for my recent antisocial and unprofessional behavior. I got a good laugh out of that. If only I could tell them the real reason.

I ordered some loose leaf tea three days ago, it arrived yesterday because the import company is about a two hour drive from me, and I brewed them at work today.
I got a special gunpowder green tea (had it before, needed more), an oolong, and a darjeeling sampler. I tried one of the darjeeling in the afternoon, and it was very good.
A small thing really, but it made the day a lot better.

I went for our national medical school admission test today. A 2.5hr component followed by an hour of lunch, then another 3hrs of testing....
I wouldn't call it "satisfactory", but I guess I won't know till results come out. I might have done fairly well after all. But since I can't use these scores to apply as it's a graduate entry thing anyway, today was more of a practice run, so I kind of winged it without preparation.
One of my weakness was my vocabulary, which kind of shows in the humanitarian section - but there's not terribly much I can do about that unless I read (and use, or I'll just forget) some really obscure and often long words.
The more important thing I should work on would be essay writing. Not having done stimulus-plan-write-STOP essays for a good few years, I suck at it now :o. It won't be too hard to brush up on this though, and next year when it counts, it'll just be like essay preparation in my highschool days.
Science was the part I loved. Of the topics and types of questions tested, I either did it in first year Pharmacy, second year Pharmacy, highschool chem/physics, or 3rd year pharm... In fact, the first question on the paper was something we just did....2 days ago? :D (Heart valves/sound and their impairments, for those interested).
Study wouldn't be necessary for that part, unlike those who are doing law, working, or something non-biochem based. The only things I can think of that I should read up again would be some rules/concepts on lenses/light/real-or-virtual images, and alpha-beta-gamma radioactive decay.
Anyway, now that that's finished, I topped off the day with some CSS fragging and Hellsing Ultimate 5 (now that Anon's the only choice). THAT made me smile :)

I got on the bus today, and instead of setting my laptop on hibernate like I usually do, I decided to put it on standby instead. Since I've never really tested how much power standby mode drains compared to hibernation (zero minus the small amounts needed to maintain the clock etc), I initially wanted to check the power level after my 1hr bus trip.
I got off the bus and went to work afterwards and went to work, came home and what not.
9 hours later, I finally remembered to turn it on again to find a 10% decrease in battery charge.
It greatly exceeded my expectations, so it made me smile.

Talking to career advisers through my university is helping me relieve some of the worry of graduating and finding a job. Right now I'm seriously considering teaching English abroad. I'd love to go to graduate school, but as it's too late to apply for any for this next school year, my next year will be spent working. I can only hope I find something that interests me.

I did some more searching to find a store that sells that heatsink for $56. It incurs a $20 delivery charge though, bumping the gross cost to $76.
I then checked another site I was getting some Nexus 120mm fans from, and they had a $10-off special going that I wasn't aware of.
So now buying 3 of these fans like I intended covers the delivery charge and then some.:)

Halfway through the night, instead of giving a cliche goodbye speech, I made everyone get in a circle and say nice things about everyone else. Okay, so there was this perverted guy in my Physics class and he's a pretty funny and outgoing guy.
So there we were in Physics class learning about atoms, lights and whatnot when he puts up his hand and sets up his question:
"Teacher, this is regarding our last unit about light and vision. You know how clothing can absorb most of the lights and the color of a shirt is typically the color that is reflected back into our eyes, right? ..."
He continues:
"Well, what is the science of light involved in when you can see through a white t-shirt when it gets wet? Is there refraction of light involved in any way?"
After such words were spoken, the entire class succumbed into a roar of laughter. They were laughing at this guy who just asked a suggestively sexual question to the teacher that has somehow infused science and humor together in a perfectly legitimate question for physics.
I was laughing pretty hard myself. But then...
I realized I WAS that guy who asked the question.
I also did not realize my teacher was wearing a white shirt herself.

I checked my connection after it connected, and I was getting 7000kbps downstream with a noise margin of 4dB.
I emailed my ISP and told them I had some dropout issues with my previous provider, and I said I would be willing to sacrifice a bit of speed for a higher noise margin.
30mins later, I noticed my connection went to shit. When I checked my connection afterwards, I see I'm connected at 1400kbps now with a 30dB noise margin.
I was expecting them take no notice, or try something a little lower, but not this........extreme...p.
In any case, that made me smile.
I've sent them an email asking them to change me to a "list of preferred settings", or if that's too demanding, then just put me back on what I was before. That connection was just a bit TOO stable ;)

Wed, 05-13-2009, 10:02 AM
My snr-margin is 12dB(close), 10dB(far).
I never really knew what this meant though. In what way does it impact the connection?
Buffalobiian
Wed, 05-13-2009, 07:00 PM
SNR = signal-to-noise ratio, aka Noise Margin.
For every meter of phone line, joints, interference etc, there's noise on the line. If the cable passes underneath a road or someone's house, trucks passing and partying causes interference noise on the line.
For ADSL modems to function, they have to send their signal ABOVE the background noise of your line so it can be heard above all other interference at the other end, the phone exchange.
SNR is the margin for error that either your service provider, or your modem decided on when it makes a connection. The higher the SNR, the more gap there is between the signal and the noise, reducing the less likely it is that the SNR will drop to zero.
For example:
If your connection specified an SNR of 4dB. If there was any outside inteference, like the sources I said above, or a phone rang, etc, the noise increases from earlier (when we established a connection). If the accumulative noise rose by 4dB, say, the result is that the modem notices it can no longer differentiate between noise and signal. It compensates for that by adding more power into the signal.
(A good analogy is like shouting louder at a gathering when the music turns up).
There a limit to how much power the modem can put out though, and when that limit is reached, background noise drowns out signals. CRC errors occure, packets arrived screwed up, and you lose synchonisation. The result is a disconnection.
Why not just jack up SNR as high as it can go?
That's because the higher the margin you set, the less frequency bandwidth you have for your ADSL connection. By increasing the "gap" between noise (the lower frequencies) and signal (the higher frequencies), you sacrifice a larger frequency range in the middle as a bigger safety margin for you connection, meaning it takes greater noise to rise up to your signal and drown it out. By doing that, you can no longer use those frequencies for your ADSL traffic.
I think I read somewhere that 3dB of margin is equivalent to about 1000kbps of bandwidth.
Some people with short lines, or great quality lines can sig with low SNRs and enjoy great speed, because their line isn't subject to any big sources of interference.
Other people who live really far from exchanges, or have a bad quality line, will be more likely to suffer from noise interference, and thus have to sacrifice some speed for a bigger noise margin, and better stability.

HOORAY for Bike to work day!
On this one glorious day they set up 'energizer stations' along the most traveled routes. These stations have juice, coffee donuts, bagels muffins fruit and assorted goodies; as much as you want. They also hand out musette bags
http://www.marinbike.org/Events/BTWD2007/Photos/Bag.jpg
which have in them cycling goodies: cliff bars, patch kits, gels etc. and tehy have coupons for awesome stuff, X% off at shops, free burritos and the like. I even got a coupon book for tons of stuff that usually sells for $25. On top of all that I don't have to make breakfast or coffee so bed to bike is like 10 minutes instead of 30. Finally, and best of all, I'm less alone riding to work.
Today though bike to work day was a trap. The afternoon winds were much worse than typical for May, sustained winds of 20, gusts up to 30. I felt so bad for the people that don't ride regularly and who surely didn't realize what there ride home had in store for them. I tried to help a number of people to get down the road by having them sit on me but the people that needed the help weren't able to hold my wheel and the ones that could hold my wheel didn't need help. After spending several miles constantly slowing back down to 16 so some peeps could catch back on to me, and then get lost again I just gave up and brought my speed back up to my normal 21-22 (fucking winds, so slow). I DID however teach one guy how to track stand. If he heeds my advice, and practices for a year or two he'll be awesome. Ahhhh, riding my bike makes me happy.
On a side note I looked up the DSMV iV for addiction and I'm pretty sure cycling counts. Joy!

Went to a totally swanky house party up in the hills in Bel-Aire last night. The place was huge...they had a room with a giant TV, a room with workout equipment, and a room with just furniture and art. The backyard looked like a tropical jungle with a waterfall, a pool and a firepit in the corner, and a gazebo-looking structure that was a hot tub. There was also a trail in the back that led up the hill with various furniture scattered along the way to just lay down on and look up at the sky or look down at the neighborhood. There was also a band playing there and a bartender serving free drinks.

That's how I roll, I'm kinky that way
er...
The picture was taken after she was half built, but before I had found a solution to the seatpost/saddle issue. On wed I rode my mtn bike to work, did a sprint ride too b/c I was late; went to some shops on my way home and found the bolts I needed to finish her. Stayed up all night wrenching. Did a test ride at 3am for 40 minutes. Found more issues, kept working till it was time to go to work. MY GOD THAT BIKE IS FAST. My average speed, (pure distance over time) was 21. covering 22 miles. after having not slept and done a sprint ride the prior day. When she was moving she was going over 20. If she had long enough w/o interruption from intersections and lights, she was holding 25+. You know that feeling when you are driving for hours and hours in the middle of nowhere and look down and realize you are accidentally going over 100. The ride to work was like that; at one point I looked down and said holy shit! I'm going 30. The bike is possessed by some wicked fast evil speed demon, and I like it that way. All I have to do is think about pedaling and she does all the work. It's the fastest bike I've ever owned.
....and it's time to go to work. toodles!

Sounds like great fun. I envy you for having a passionate hobby. Really. There's like nothing that motivates me anymore.

Why should there be anything I care about? Sure, give it a try. Maybe I should make a new thread or something for it.

Well, if it starts off fresh and has a solid gameplay system, then I won't resist buying it. :p

The next countdown clock has a one eyed Cyborg raiden, putting 1+1 together, the new game must jump between time periods. I am actually expecting more of an expansion instead of MGS5
Or its something completely different and kojima is just being a bitch (letitplzbezoe3kthx)

I would like a 3rd generation Zone of the Enders. That'd be awesome!
What made me smile today is all the female attention I'm getting lately. :p
