One easy thing to improve on is erasing the Engrish ;) Really, it's scary how people already want to build these things for sex. If what Xan said was true about refusing to feed, I'd imagine they can do the same ;)

Actually, I just got an idea - Program these things to go around underage, with an auto-dial to the cops upon penetration.

More than 15,000 videos and 500,000 images of child abuse, described by police as being among the worst they have seen, have been seized as a result of the 12-month investigation.

The images and videos, shared between members of an online peer-to-peer network, include the sexual abuse of children as young as 12 months old........"Some depicted sexual abuse of children lasting more than two hours," he said....

At best, that controller should only serve as supporting evidence. What that proves is that "the controller was once paired with that Xbox", nothing more. Imagine if your friend came over to play Xbox, then left because of software corruption which needed reformatting, then came back a few hours later with authorities saying that Xbox was his, because his controller works :p

Of course, other things like cabling, dust marks of where the console used to be placed, the culprit's lack of controllers etc will solidify his argument. I'm just playing on the fact they said "the controller was proof enough that the console was his".

I was wondering the same thing Bill. The controller turned the 360 on and that proves that the 360 is his:confused: Surely he must have some corroborating evidence.

Bush almost screwed me up with his surprise visit to Baghdad. They closed the damn airport 2 hours after my flight left. If it doesn't kill me outright, I'll recover.

I fail to see reason to be concerned. Public places and items (doornobs, ATMs, net cafe computer keyboards, etc) contain way more bacteria, viruses, and probably fecal matter than any of the things on that list. I just wash my hands after using some of those, but you can't avoid germs. So long as you eat healthily enough, and maybe eat yogurt, the germs inside of you will fight those invaders off.

Buffalobiian

Semi-cooked eggs on rice and other dishes (or just by itself) is really nice. People (mostly Asians) were concerned about it at first because of the bird flu thing, but that concern's dying down now.

While I agree with Ryll that the number of germs lying around public places (escalator handles anyone?) makes food bacteria pale in comparison, I'd think food poisoning isn't about numbers alone. Bacteria and pathogens that infect food and leave their toxins are probably more potentially harmful than the many random bugs floating around that just die in our stomach acid. I'm just talking from general impressions here, so if anybody has solid data or otherwise, I'd be interested in finding out.

I do agree with the fact that, if it doesn't really kill you, the appropriate level of concern is debatable. You would hope your country's food quality control takes care of most of these.

Ryllharu
Tue, 12-16-2008, 08:26 PM
The reason you don't get sick everyday from all the less-than-sterile objects you touch (before rubbing your eyes, nose, mouth, etc.) isn't because of the acids and other chemicals in your stomach, it is because of all the happy little biots in your intestines.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is the big one for the upper intestines. They accomplish this through crowding, which means there are so many of the little bastards that other kinds of bacteria can't multiply and gain a foothold in your system.

It is one of the basic principles behind probiotics, though they really don't need our assistance too often.

Through arduous work, salmonella was completely removed from all eggs produced in Finland years ago (which is why I wouldn't buy anything but Finnish eggs here). Zero incidence level these days. The only danger to this excellence I see right now are domestic terrorists (called animal right activists), who just might be brainless enough to sabotage this as well.

I read about that melon thing some years ago, and these days I first wipe melons with 70% ethanol, then wash them with water, scrubbing furiously. Otherwise when you cut a melon with a knife, the bacteria on the surface will be moved to the nutritious inner parts and they will multiply like crazy. It's a nobrainer, really, to compare door handles and food items: Only one of these two places allows the bacteria to propagate, not merely linger waiting for better times (though they are good at the waiting business as well).

Absolutely none of their core market. The kind of people who make up the IE base are one of two:

1) Businesses who rely on the applications people like to build in IE (...ugh, crappy training videos and programs) or use it for security, monitoring, or other totalitarian purposes (but allowable because you agreed to terms when you were hired).

2) Average Joe Everyone, Jane Anybody, and Esther Geriatric who believe that the "E" icon is "The Internet."

Most people who have already switched to Firefox, Safari, Opera or even Chrome left IE long ago for all kinds of other reasons.

I switched to Opera completely after FF3 came out, because I hated some of the changes they made (the way their Awesome Bar fuctions) but to be honest, it was the fanbase that really pushed me over. I'd say a large majority of the changes FF3 made appeared in Opera first.

But you'll never convince the most hardcore of FF fans of that. FF, "always does it first, always does it better...etc." My other issue is that the majority of benchmark testing with FF is done without all the Extensions. The issue is that to achieve the same functionality of a lot of other browsers out there, FF needs those extensions.

Getting ads back took a little getting used to, but since I see them at work all the time in IE6, it's not that big of a deal. Opera has manual ad-block built it, so I can block the really obnoxious ads, and you can always edit your hosts file or install a blacklist to Opera's blocker.

FF doesn't hold a candle to Opera's built in script killers. FF needs NoScript to even compete.

My Opera-fanboy rant aside, Microsoft is supposed to have an emergency fix out for the issue by today or a little bit later. No one can compete with MS's abilities to patch vulernabilities. They have a good dev team, and a ton of experience...heh.

I saw a documentary about anti-gay-marriage evangelical christian groups earlier, do these people even know what sort of crap they're sprouting?
people said that the bible insisted that marriage was between one man and one woman. which is basically ignoring just about any figure in the bible. and then there was someone who said that gays are dangerous to the human race as explained by theory of evolution, he quickly added "in which I don't believe, of course!", just to make himself look even more of an shithead.

Both the New and Old Testaments unequivocally condemn homosexuality. If you are a Christian and consider the Bible authoritative, you can only treat homosexuals as normal people through cognitive dissonance.

EDIT:

To the two passive-aggressive pussies who neg repped me condescendingly, I hope you neg repped someone who dismissed hundreds of years of sociopolitical thought with blithe catchphrases he probably picked up from his dad. Purging is the only solution. Yes it sucks, yes it is dusty (puts me in 20 minute sneezing fits), yes it takes time, and yes it is a pain in the ass. That's why everyone tries to come up with "clever" solutions.

You're still not getting to the root of the problem. You have too much junk you never use. Over the course of a two years or so, my bedroom gets so full of crap (or a pile of junk forms in the living room) that I get irritated to the point of action.

I toss out between 4 and 6 FULL black garbage bags (largest you can buy). The process takes a whole week.

But it gets the job done like nothing else possibly can. There is no easy route in life.

She was psychologically unstable, thinking that burning them genitals would make them hers and hers only. Mark Petric, who is a minister at New Life Assembly of God in Wellington, testified that his son came into the room and asked: "Would you guys close your eyes? I have a surprise for you."

The father, who recovered from the shooting, testified that he expected a pleasant surprise.
Then his head went numb from a gunshot. His wife, Susan, 43, died of gunshot wound to the head.

Your metabolism is fast because you're young, and you probably don't get such a large percentage of your caloric intake from sugar and fat. You're also not considering that drinking one of these would be adding to what you would have already eaten that day. I eat roughly 4,000 calories a day, and I exercise regularly. Drinking one of those things in one sitting would mean adding 50% more to my daily intake. These aren't good calories either.

You might as well drink a gallon of fat before bed.

It actually happens a lot, but the bigger aircraft aren't really bothered by it cause of the crazy huge turbines, plus they can still fly even if one of the engine fails. But yeah if a bird gets stuck in one of those smaller engines, the engine is toast.

Someone's about to kill themself and you're URGING them to do it? What kind of sick world are we living in?

Nah, it's precisely the kind of world we are living in. People have (relatively) lots of free time, largely are at a spiritual emptiness (due to material wellbeing), and consequently are looking for thrills and experiences everywhere to fill the hollowness inside them. As such the death of some stranger is not of as huge an impact as some anime would have you believe. In the past public executions of criminals (or anybody) were one of the most popular events among the populace, gathering huge crowds of cheerful spectators.

Yeah but...this was just an ordinary teenager. I'd understand a criminal...but really. This was cruel. =/

I'm more inclined to believe the hecklers didn't like the fact that the guy was a homosexual.

Depends on if they knew him. I was inclined to think they did, as I can't think why a bystander would do such a thing. Thinking of the people I knew/seen in my city though, I can think of people who would do just that - cheer for someone to die because they've got nothing better to do.

That shows just how stringent our laws have become in order to rule out just that one-in-one-thousand individual who would exploit it. My neighbour and I had a discussion about this yesterday. In Australia here, childcare people aren't allowed to "touch" the children unless it was absolutely unavoidable. While we see how this is necessary, think about trying to help kids apply sunscreen? Or when they want a cuddle, and you have to push them away.

She worked at a police/state-run childcare before, and she told of how there was one man that all the children loved - he was great with them, and never did anything to hurt them. He loved them just as they loved him. He got fired because of one parent's complaint though. Apparently, while he was catching a girl from a trampoline, he "held her too long".

I wasn't there, and this account could well be biased, but there it is anyway.

She's actually a qualified psychologist, and she thought that this sort of upbringing really severs the bonds that children form with people as they grow. She hypothesised that it's this lack of emotional bonding and upbringing that has lead to increased instances violation between people (assault, theft, rape etc).

She says when you don't feel and empathise with others, it's a lot easier to make the decision to hurt them, and I see truth in what she says.

My mother said similar things - school these days don't effectively teach behaviour anymore. Teaching knowledge without teaching how to use it, as she puts it.

/off topic - but amazing how something like that stemmed from legalising garbage collecting :p

As someone from another board pointed out, you should note the differences in reporting the way Obama "stumbled":

Roberts, who used no notes, stumbled at one point, appearing to forget the opening words. Obama, a former constitutional law professor, paused until Roberts got back on track with “I will faithfully execute the office of president to the United States.”

But at one point early on, Obama paused, as if grasping for the next words. Roberts helped him over the brief awkward moment, repeating a few words to get Obama back on track.

MSNBC/CNN: Roberts screwed up
FOX: Obama is like a child who needs help reading "Pet the Kitty"

And now, hours later, Fox has amended their article to say that it was indeed Roberts who dropped the ball on that one. It's laughable how full of shit they are on that network.

Absolutely. Their assertion that they are fair and balanced is absurd. The only reason I sometimes watch them is because the liberal media is so disgustingly in the tank for Obama and I feel I need to balance my news networks out. The liberal media is almost just as bad, and even though they are not as hateful as their conservative counterparts, they make up for it by never letting people on their shows with differing opinions. Just two or three guys circle jerking each other arguing over semantics.

Especially Rachel Maddow. That bulldyke bitch is super annoying.

Similarly, I watched both CNN and Fox's coverage of the inauguration. When all networks claim to be balanced but none get it right, it's up to the viewer to do the balancing themself.

Obama Retakes Oath of Office (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28780417/)

WASHINGTON - After the flub heard around the world, President Barack Obama has taken the oath of office. Again. Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the oath to Obama on Wednesday night at the White House — a rare do-over.

The surprise moment came in response to Tuesday's much-noticed stumble, when Roberts got the words of the oath a little off, which prompted Obama to do so, too.

Don't worry, the White House says: Obama has still been president since noon on Inauguration Day. Nevertheless, Obama and Roberts went through the drill again out of what White House counsel Greg Craig called "an abundance of caution."

This article really made me very angry, how can u do that to your own daughter? I mean the story from the mother is already confusing from the mother to the father, he did it she did it, they should both be convicted from the conspiracy alone. I never liked front-load washing machines. I thought they looked kinda ugly, but they do save a lot of water, and space too if you live in crowded environments like urban Japan or Hong Kong etc.

Now I've got another reason to dislike them. If you must get one of these, I suggest mounting them on the ceiling (those appartments have low ceilings anyway) to make it less of a hazard.

Fors and Against listed in this read:

"He also lost a high-profile sponsor Thursday when Kellogg Co. said it wouldn’t renew its deal with Phelps that expires later this month.

“This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,” the Colorado Springs, Colo.-based national governing body said in a statement.

“Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust.”"

------------------------------------------------------------------

“Enough is enough,” said Evan Morgenstein, who represents a large number of Olympic swimmers. “The penalty is far greater than the crime. He has said he is sorry. Let’s move on to the real problems in this country.”

“I see him as a kid trying to grow up in the most intense spotlight known to any athlete. He has apologized and what else can he do?” she told the AP by telephone. “The thing I hope is that people realize Michael is still a person and not just a swimming hero.”

Have you ever tried Blue Mountain coffee from Jamaica?

The only coffee I ever had was Starbucks, and that was only a one time deal. Not bad, but not too terribly good. I should try and go find this Blue Mountain coffee, starting with Wal-Mart.

Victim hits Gunman with Taxi (http://wbztv.com/local/somerville.carjacking.retaliation.2.929784.html)

SOMERVILLE (WBZ) ―
A shooting victim in Somerville is accused of retaliating against his alleged shooter by hijacking a nearby cab and running him over.

t all started when police responded to reports of shots fired at the corner of Elm and Chester streets in Davis Square around 2 a.m. on Sunday. The victim, Marcel Laurol, 32, of Malden, was allegedly shot in the leg by a 25-year-old Brockton man.

Immediately after the shooting, police say Laurol hijacked a cab, assaulted the driver and then took off after the alleged shooting suspect, who is not being identified, with two passengers still sitting in the back seat.

It's pretty badass that he was able to hijack a cab and retaliate, but there were passengers inside meaning he was probably nuts and there's probably more to this story than it seems.

And lack of water. We're possibly the 1st First World country to have a drought in recent generations. We get bushfires too, though probably not as bad as the US.

I think we just matched them (US), if not beat them.

Yeah, I'm alive. But I'm not feeling all that great.

I was less than a mile away from one of the major fires but luckily for me it didn't get any closer. The horrible thing is I was floating in a friend's pool enjoying myself the whole time. I feel so damned guilty because I could have been helping somehow. Not that there's a lot I could have done, but still.

It makes me sick to my stomach to comprehend everything that's happened the last few days here. I'm going to give blood and make a cash donation to the appeal. That's at least something small I can do to assist.

BAGHDAD – A female suicide bomber attacked a tent filled with women and children resting from a pilgrimage to a Shiite holy city south of Baghdad on Friday, killing 40 people and injuring 60 others, said officials. It was the deadliest attack in Iraq this year and the third straight day of bombings against Shiite pilgrims.

What do people think when they suicide themself in a tent full of innocent women and children? What the hell do they promote the cause for? Their mentality will never be understood as to why they do it in the first place.

Yeah, they aren't thinking anything. Their leaders have brainwashed them to do the fell deeds. You don't see the leaders themselves do such things, though, because they are thinking. Like Bin Laden who has been hiding who knows where all these years while his followers are getting killed left and right for the cause. The cause, of course, is nothing but to make the top man mightier and more powerful.

Anyway, in the news lately, there was some graduate student at a British university who was researching the eating habits of an extremely rare lizard in the Phillipines. To perform his research, he painstakingly collected this lizard's feces over a period of five years. When he sent the feces back to his university, the university had received it in an unmarked, black trash bag. When the university did a routine inventory cleanup, they unwittingly threw away the unmarked bag with lizard feces. In effect, they threw away five years hard work of the graduate student, who on the same day of learning of this mishap, had his girlfriend break up with him. Talk about bad luck.

Interesting take on how these medicines can really have no benefit to you or your later self in life. I agree that some medicines don't prevent the risk of cancers; they just give the user the benefit of relief when using it.

That is true. If you find it's working, go for it. If it's not, then you might as well stop.

All I can say is antioxidants are worth taking. Same with Omega 3 fatty acids/fish oil. Other stuff...I haven't really looked into. Vitamins are particularly useful if you're lacking them in your diet. If you aren't, not so much.

California introduces bill to legalize Marijuana (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/02/23/BAO416354C.DTL&type=politics&tsp=1)

(02-23) 17:50 PST SACRAMENTO -- California would become the first state in the nation to legalize marijuana for recreational use under a bill introduced Monday by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano of San Francisco.

The proposal would regulate marijuana like alcohol, with people over 21 years old allowed to grow, buy, sell and possess cannabis - all of which is barred by federal law.

Ammiano, a Democrat in his third month as a state lawmaker, said taxes and other fees associated with regulation could put more than a billion dollars a year into state coffers at a time when revenues continue to decline.

He said he thinks the federal government could soften its stance on marijuana under the Obama administration.

I fucking hate weed. Whenever I'm around people smoking it, my eyes water, and my ears and throat itch. I'm against the legalization of weed for two reasons.

1) Since weed is illegal, you can get in a lot of trouble for getting caught smoking it. Consequently, in most places I frequent or have frequented where people who smoke weed would be (think college dorm, yuppie apartment building, suburban hangout park, etc.), they go through great lengths to hide the smell and the smoke. Like maybe stuffing the spaces between room doors and floors with clothing, smoking near airvents that (hopefully) pull out the smoke, and so on. If weed were legal, they'd be a hell of a lot more relaxed about their concealment protocols, to my dismay.

2) I don't want Obama to become the president associated with drug use.
