This goes back to the whole "language as a means to communicate" deal. Why make a symbol and a minute variation of that symbol stand for two completely different things? It defeats the purpose of talking to each other.
It's almost as bad as changing your username on a forum multiple times.

It was probably because they thought it was premeditated murder after he sent her an email stating, "You change the topic every time they are f*cking you". This scenario reminds me of the movie Atonement, where a kinky message gets people in all kinds of trouble.

We've been talking about this case in the office. Why should he be allowed to die painlessly? Did the person he strangled or shot or beat to death get to die painlessly? Because they have to convince that "capital punishment" is not murder.
Furthermore, I think lawyers may argue that the man was "sentenced to death", and not "physically inflicted pain". Then they'd sue the state for commiting torture against inmates. So somehow they'll have to kill him, without paining him.

She has little experience, so he's saying he plans to be there for a long time. Plus, first female vice president means that he'll get known for something (along with being the oldest president). So.. both candidates have something that will be really historical if they win. Also, for all those women voters who are pissed that they have no Hillary, might vote for McCain because he has a female VP.

Don LaFontaine died today :(
http://www.etonline.com/news/2008/09/64990/index.html
LaFontaine, known as the "King of Voiceovers," died Monday afternoon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. LaFontaine's agent, Vanessa Gilbert, tells ET that he passed away following complications from Pneumothorax, the presence of air or gas in the pleural cavity, the result of a collapsed lung. The official cause of death has not yet been released.
Over the past 25 years, LaFontaine cemented his position as the "King of Voiceovers." Aside from being the preeminent voice in the movie trailer industry, Don also worked as the voice of Entertainment Tonight and The Insider, as well as for CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox and UPN, in addition to TNT, TBS and the Cartoon Network. By conservative estimates, he voiced hundreds of thousands of television and radio spots, including commercials for Chevrolet, Pontiac, Ford, Budweiser, McDonalds, Coke, and many other corporate sponsors.
Yeah, he's the "Voiceover Guy". After I heard this I searched youtube and found this really good video clip about him and his work:

Girl commits suicide (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26641652/)
BHOPAL, India - A teenage girl in central India killed herself on Wednesday after being traumatized by media reports that a "Big Bang" experiment in Europe could bring about the end of the world, her father said. The 16-year old girl from the state of Madhya Pradesh drank pesticide and was rushed to the hospital but later died, police said.
Her father, identified on local television as Biharilal, said that his daughter, Chayya, killed herself after watching doomsday predictions made on Indian news programs.
For the past two days, many Indian news channels held discussions airing doomsday predictions over a huge particle-smashing machine buried under the Swiss-French border.
The machine, called the Large Hadron Collider, was switched on on Wednesday, at the start of what experts say is the largest scientific experiment in human history.

So, watching the news today... they had this huge story about the economy crysis thats happening right now. it looked like a really serious thing the way they did the broadcast.
then.. about 15 minutes later they did this story about some huge drug bust in texas and kept going on and on about how it would be less drugs on 'our' streets, and so on...
when i saw this i could only think of how good a time it would be to start actions to decriminalize many drugs. crime... gone, money... tons.
of course this would have other ripple effects like dea agents being out of a job and what not.
people aren't going to stop using drugs... they're just going to do more outrageous and desperate things to get them, causing increases in all sorts of other crimes.

Stopping drug crimes for that reason alone would be inappropriate. For one, it's the law enforcers' responsibility to enforce laws. Stopping crime is their job. Choosing to use desperate measures of obtaining drugs is not their fault, but those of the people. That's why besides law enforcement, educating the public is also needed, and is being done now. Allowing something to go on that is wrong to go one, because one simply thinks they may do worse if you do something about it is not the right thing to go about it. It's like bullying in school. If you tell the teacher, the dude might do something worse, and you may decide not to tell. However, it's wrong for the teacher to know about it, then do nothing because "it'll be more troublesome".

I thought they rebounded partly because central banks around the world pumped billions upon billions of euros, dollars, pounds, yens and whatever to make sure there is still money available in the market, and it didn't all disappear like so many American banks.
And as much as those government haters from 50's and their offspring hate all governmental interventions, the primary mission of the (Western) governments is to make sure the citizens of the country can make a more or less happy life for themselves. Some people mistakenly think the role of the government is to disappear, as if that would give the people much better opportunities. Just look at the more miserable parts of Africa or Russia from early 90's to see what you get with no or a weak government.
All those big corporations are run by greedy bastards and as good a job as they usually do, I think these recent happenings demonstrate it doesn't work all the time.

i love how nobody's talking about the US becoming more and more socialist.
Lovely hypcorisy, where would the world be without it? I agree with you on this point, though to be honest third world countries have been bearing the brunt of Capitalist self protection far longer than this credit crunch has been around for. And its not just the US, Europe also engages in protectionism, and patronisingly attempt to explain away this double standard by declaring of course there is no such thing as a perfect free market. Which is absolute bollocks when you think at how much third world countries are forced to 'liberalise' their markets in exchange for some miserable commodity quotas.

LAREDO, Texas (AP) — A Texas jury acquitted a man accused of killing a boy who broke into his home looking for a snack — a case that sparked outrage in this border city, where many thought the man should not have even been charged.
...
Gonzalez had endured several break-ins at his trailer when the four boys, ranging in age from 11 to 15, broke in. Gonzalez, who was in a nearby building at the time, went into the trailer and confronted the boys with a 16-gauge shotgun. Then he forced the boys, who were unarmed, to their knees, attorneys on both sides say.
The boys say they were begging for forgiveness when Gonzalez hit them with the barrel of the shotgun and kicked them repeatedly. Then, the medical examiner testified, Anguiano was shot in the back at close range. Two mashed Twinkies and some cookies were stuffed in the pockets of his shorts.

Eh, just yesterday a coworker was telling me a case of deadly force against break-ins where a registered sex offender broke into a girl's bedroom completely naked except for a knife and some condoms, and then was promptly strangled to death by the father.
Could be worse, it could be like some of these other states, where a guy can trip and injure himself while attempting a break-in, and then win in a lawsuit against the homeowners.

was there a logical for the person to suspect he's about to be physically harmed if he hadn't used deadly force?

Well, he must have given enough reasonable doubt, since he says it looks like the kid was lunging at him.
Not defending what was happening, but his house was broken into several times and, frankly, the kids shouldn't have broken into his house. If they didn't, he wouldn't have been able to get off with what happened.
If the kid did look like he was leaning forward and all.. I'm sure the other ones weren't able to tell, and all the jury needed was just enough reasonable doubt.

It mightn't have been the same kids.
But in the Texas case, it's really hard to justify. Part of what supported the decision was that deadly robbery seems to be the case there, so it was reasonable for the man to expect a fight for his life against intruders. Given the age of the kids, it is also possible for them to kill him in return. all it takes is one guy to wind him, and another to take the gun.
That said, I'm not 100% for what happened.

There were three other perps. So make that four stories, and he still won. The message is clear: "STAY THE FUCK OUT OF OUR HOMES IF WE DIDN'T LET YOU IN!" I'm for it. A friend of mine mentioned that the version of the story he read had the mother of the victim saying "...I thought there'd be a mother or father on the jury who would understand..." Yeah, they do. I bet those kids won't try to rob someone else. Maybe it'll teach all the other ones not to steal from homes, either.
Whether we like that the kid was killed or not, he willingly put himself in a situation where it could have happened. All the guy had to do was shoot in the dark. They entered his house, one could have gotten killed that way. Of course the parents would feel bad, but that doesn't excuse the kids for breaking into the house.
Not that I'm for it an all :P it's just how things went. No matter how many people don't like it, in the law's eyes, he's a free man.

For those of you who may be following international news, Canada had a national election yesterday. It's hardly the big news that the American election is, but this is what annoys me about it. Voter turnout drops to record low (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canadavotes/story/2008/10/15/voter-turnout.html?ref=rss)
What this news article doesn't mention is that a whole lot of people were turned away at the polls, because they didn't bring proper identification with their address. For a large number of students, we don't have ANY id with our current address because we move around so much. Another option is to get someone who does have sufficient id to vouch for you and swear under oath that you live there, but for for some of those people who had to wait up to two hours in line just to get in to vote only to be told they needed to go find a friend and come back, I'm betting they just left. It was a school day and a work day after all, and students don't have buckets of free time to throw around.
I didn't vote either. Does that make me a bad Canadian? I would have been fine if I'd only had to show up with some ID proving I'm a Canadian citizen, but I just moved into my current house a couple months ago and I have nothing official with my address on it. I also had classes all day, and my university is outside of the city. So voting would have meant finding someone who had proof of residence and dragging them with me on a half hour busride to the nearest polling station, and waiting in line with them for who knows how long, and then bussing home. Most of my friends had already voted by the time I got out of class. I just didn't feel like my vote was going to be worth enough to justify so much effort, and I had a lot of homework to get through (and let's be honest...doing my homework has a much more direct affect on my immediate future right now). Kudos to you Conservatives, for complicating the voting process so much for those most likely to vote against you, the students.

Wed, 10-15-2008, 11:36 AM
What happens in Canada is that in every riding, the people in that area will elect a representative to the House of Commons. The party with the most seats in the House is in power, but we don't have a single individual who is in control like the President in the US. What we have (again) is the Conservatives with the most seats, but not a majority of them, which means that they will be held in check by the other parties. Not an ideal situation, and they were hoping to gain a majority by calling this annoying and unnecessary election, but they're still stuck as a minority government. Honestly though, as much as I dislike the conservatives, the liberals haven't been doing much better, and the NDP still haven't been able to establish enough credibility to be seen by Canadians as potential leaders. It might take a while before someone steps up who Canadians actually WANT to vote for, instead of choosing the lesser of two evils.
Kraco

Identification with an address? I see. That's certainly troublesome. Over here you only need an official id of some sort. And luckily ids don't have addresses on them as it would be a pain (and expensive) to get a new one every time you move. I have no idea, though, what would happen if you had no address whatsoever. Maybe you wouldn't have a right to vote. At least you wouldn't get the note of your right to vote if they had nowhere to send it.

When I went off to university I left my parent's home address on my driver's license. As long as you're in-state they don't care. If you move to another state, you have something like 60 days to get your license for the new state. Nothing will happen if you don't except you can't register your car and get new license plates if you don't have a license for that state. If you drive around with expired plates from another state, you'll get pulled over by the police and fined for not having the new license and new plates and vehicle registration.

Since they're just doing it as a safety measure and didn't try to put paradichlorobenzene(I know how to draw that from looking at the name now :D), I'm not so worried. Especially since they decided to recall it too, so keep consumer confidence in their product high. That's actually a good move. Money is little sacrifice to show consumers your company's integrity and standards.
In fact, that's precisely what's killing China's products now. Not just how many times contaminates have been discovered, but how they knowingly did it. Standards is one thing, but integrity is another. Without the latter, the former means nothing.
It's unfortunate, but stuff like this happening so many times has pushed that image from the individual companies to the Chinese manufacturing industry in general.

The melamine in the recent milk scandal isn't that bad for adults. Since adults who can drink fresh milk tend to do so, they'll really only consume it through other products, such as chocolate. It was detrimental to babies' health though, since all they drink is milk in its powdered form (for those who don't get a human feed), and their kidney's not developed enough to get rid of toxin. The babies would risk kidney failure, while adults who take an absurdly high amount would probably get kidney stones.
This all goes back to a couple of years ago, when there were babies developing a "big head syndrome" which was attributed to milk powders lacking in protein. The government then raised the bar, which led to Sanlu adding melamine, which could trick protein tests.

Things are pretty bad in PETAland. Fortunately over here cow's milk is not as poisonous and cows are treated much better than in their tree hugging country. I wonder where they even find their info. If cow's milk was that bad, half of Europe would be wilderness, because all the humans would have died of milk poisoning a long time ago...
But other than that... I wonder if I'd eat ice-cream made of human milk. I honestly can't say. I don't really even like to eat cheese made of other than cow's milk.

Human (female) milk is supposed to be rich in nutrients and antibodies that help infants grow and defend against disease, so I imagine it's a good idea for everyone to drink it. It would certainly raise ethical issues but women could lactate and make money selling to companies like Ben and Jerry's and make extra income in these troubled times.
You just know there will be sickos, nerds, and frat boys who buy the ice cream for no other reason than because it's made with breast milk.
Buffalobiian

They raised the issue of cows being forcefully impregnated every 9 months just to constantly produce milk. Imagine what kind of ideas mothers would get. You'd also have the issue of "home made" vs "quality controlled". You'll need to really screen breast milk for diseases and drugs for contaminants too.
I can just imagine a mother forcing her baby on some cheap homebrand formula just so she can top up her bank account with that little bit more milk.
(It's also really funny how they completely ignore the benefits of drinking cow's milk)

actually, that's a good racial comment.
a century back, white families would hire a black woman with a small child so she could breast feed him instead of the white mother. (it happened world-wide, including in oriental parts of the globe).

The driver was then told to step out of the vehicle, move off to the side for a little chat about "what happened", and never to be seen again.
The cars were confiscated. Scary stuff. For some reason it reminds me of the Serial Taxi Rapist cases in Hong Kong a good decade ago. I remember hearing it from Mum. Not sure how i feel about this...it kind of reeks of neo-colonialism. I mean, I partially blame Madagascar for selling the land, but...yea; I hope they use that money for needed things, as it'd be kinda dumb if it turns out that they need to import some of the crops that they themselves can grow.
It seems like the ROK has stopped taking the moral high road that they so espoused (anyone remember when it was a poor,war-ravaged country like 40 years ago?) because basically Japan had done atrocious stuff to them. But now that they have money, it seems that they're becoming just like Britain, America, China, etc. I just hope they don't screw over the Madagascans too much

One thing I have never understood about America is the shopping frenzy that happens on Thanksgiving. I wonder historically what happened to associate that day so strongly with consumeristic culture. In Canada we have our big shopping day on Boxing Day right after Christmas, but it's not as big a deal as Thanksgiving sales are for our neighbours in the south. I hear stories from my friends who brave the border crossing to catch some of the sales, and it's pretty unreal how competitive everyone is to get the deals they want.

It is also partially part of the management fault for not preparing the necessary measure for such a huge crowd.
I am not implying that these "customers" are any less at fault or barbaric by any mean since they are still responsible for that man death but management certainly could have taken actions to ensure the safety of workers.
Case and point, one of my friend who works at Fry's Electronic said that they also has a ridiculously huge crowd for black friday. The management there however had felt that it was necessary to put a security guard up front and let small group of peoples into the store at a time in order to prevent mass chaos. The end result or those simple actions was a very uneventful day with no accidents. They also had to the sales available all day with a limit of one per customer so that really helps in reducing the need to rush.

"Only with regular occurrence will your chances be reduced, so I encourage all women out there to make fellatio an important part of their daily routine," said Dr. Helena Shifteer, one of the researchers at the University. "Since the emergence of the research, I try to fellate at least once every other night to reduce my chances."
That made me lol. So did the entire article. Until they give a proper reason why though, I won't take it too seriously.

Her name is Visundra. She's Indian. Nothing feels more dangerous than banging an Indian girl outside of an arranged marriage.

Lol...yea, I showed that to my gf, and then she got angry at me when I told her it was an obvious joke. Maybe I shouldn't have said anything...she actually thought it was a real study. :o

There is a such thing as too much of a good thing...I'm just surprised she thought it was real; although she did get suspicious when none of the links worked.

Inventor builds Fem-Bot (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article2023392.ece)
Devoted Aiko — “in her 20s” — has a stunning 32-23-33 figure, pretty face and shiny hair.
She is always happy to clean the house for “husband” Le, help with his accounts or get him a drink.
Computer ace Le, 33, from Ontario, Canada, has spent two years and £14,000 building his dream girl.
He had planned to make an android to care for the elderly.
But his project — inspired by sci-fi robots like Star Wars’s C3PO — strayed off-course....
Good fucking Lord.

“Women usually try to talk to her. But men always want to touch her, and if they do it the wrong way she slaps them.”
Good stuff there. It really makes you think if true AI is just around the corner.
