Wow. Being in the middle of the streets in floods like that is pretty foolish though. Manhole covers get pushed up by the water and then carried away, leaving one really deep hole, invisible from the surface of the rushing waters.
Best of luck to those still out there below the high ground.

It isn't foolish. It is necessary. A lot of people were actually caught in transit by the sudden flood, and actually had to wade to safety. Other people simply cannot stay in their houses and needed to seek higher ground. My aunt's house was actually flooded up to the 3rd floor. She had to get out from the fire escape and use an air bed as a raft just to survive. Luckily, I live on high ground and was barely affected by the incredible flood.

Although I don't even remember the last time some fool's cellphone would have started to ring in the middle of a movie but all in all it could be good for theaters and other such places. But hardly for homes when it would render your own phone useless. That's a pretty strong point unless you want your home to be a total bastion of peaceful silence and isolation (with no brainwashing waves from outer space).
Besides, in addition to being special paint (either specially made or requiring additions) if some Japanese institution or company owns the patent, it would be too expensive anyway for anybody other than government, companies, or st33v.

It's going to army usage. they're going to paint all the secret conferences rooms in that silly thing.
instead of reminding everyone to take out their battery ("no, I can't take out my battery, it's a mater of national security..." "we're all officers here, you twat!") they just throw that thing, and problem solved.

Obama wins Nobel Peace prize for being black and not in jail. (http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE59824J20091009)
I voted for him and all, but seriously, wtf?
He was nominated for the Nobel 10 or 11 days after taking office, and in case anyone hasn't been keeping track, he hasn't accomplished jack shit yet.
- Health care reform: nothing concrete.
- Closing Gitmo: In progress
- Bagram Air Base: Still open for business!
- Education: No Child Left Behind is still in effect, so still fucked.
- Iraq: Still there.
- Afganistan: totally fucked unless we send more troops
- Fight against Al-Qaeda: Potentially about to cause an international incident with Pakistan
- Iran: Still hates us.
- Israel/Palestine: ...I'm not even going to touch this one.
- Corrupt Banks: A-OKAY!
If he gets even half of these accomplished, I've got no problem with it.
But if the reason he won this award is because he wasn't George W. Bush, then the award should go to every American who isn't George W. Bush, including Bush's wife and daughters.
The gracious thing would be a "We're not worthy!" and refuse the award, but he's already planning on donating the money to charity.
The Nobel Peace Prize just lost whatever credibility it had left.

Myth: The prize is awarded to recognize efforts for peace, human rights and democracy only after they have proven successful.
More often, the prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments.
Doesn't make it any less weird, it's just not unprecedented.

The other 20% will be so productive that the loss of the productivity of the 80% will be negligible. Plus since 80% of the population is in the slave mines, we won't need that much output to support the well-to-do 20%. Those who meet mandated guidelines for body/weight/height will be released from the mines anyway.

(The low-powered beams are considered safe.) A ground receiving station a mile in diameter could deliver about 1,000 megawatts -- enough to power on average about one million U.S. homes.
A receiving station a mile in diameter is one huge thing, though. But I guess if microwave to electricity conversion is cheap and the equipment durable, building such a grand receiver would be no problem, unlike building that big a solar plant.

At first glance this is just a marijuana article. However, Buff, if this is your neck of the woods you have a responsibility to stop it. No matter what charge you have, the police will not be required to prove grounds of suspicion in court. "Also, police will be given unprecedented powers to frisk people for drugs and weapons." This Premier Colin Barnett and his cronies in the Australian government sound like very dangerous people, they are threatening democracy and will be promptly taking all your rights away if the bill passes. Not to mention anyone who thinks weed is that dangerous in the first place has a vendetta. I bet he was raped as a child. By the Doobie Brothers.

I'm not too optimistic about the recent news of Obama not wanting to waste federal money and time hassling people who are involved w\ medical marijuana where it is legal @ the state level... but it a little refreshing to see it in the news.
But then you have all of these hard liners who are against any form of marijuana legalization and they refuse to budge at all on their stance, or to listen to the opposing argument and facts.

Previously McDonalds in Japan had a burger with 4 patties and it was a best-seller. There were lines around the block at its introduction to the menu. Give it another 10-15 years of western influence and Japan will have the same obesity problems that China is currently experiencing.

Give it another 10-15 years of western influence and Japan will have the same obesity problems that China is currently experiencing.
I think their situations are vastly different. China's situation is majorly affected by socioeconomical factors combined with the one child policy. Rapid economic growth, desire to reach Western living standards (in good and bad) and only one child to spoil and you get end results like the obesity problem. Japan, however, has long been rich and westernized so I doubt it would suddenly turn obese now. If it does, the problem is larger than just hamburgers.

I was watching Dateline last night about that girl who had been kidnapped for 18 years, and had 2 babies by her kidnapper....
Anyhow.... it was pretty disturbing. They actually sentenced this guy to life in prison in the late 70's I think it was... He got married while in jail and managed to get sympathy w\ his new wife w\ the parole board and he was paroled after just 11 years in jail.
He'd been given 50 years for kidnap and rape, and a life sentence for other crimes including other rapes, etc and his testimony about watching children at schools and what not.
It was very disturbing though, that they had this sick guy locked up on a life sentence but then decided to parole him? and sure enough, he instantly went back to kidnap, rape, and probably murder too.

It definitely beats Wars by Proxy, which the Afgans and the Iraqis both know all too well. Sending matériel to supply another country may work in the short term, and look really good for those politicians back home on paper, "We're not endangering our boys [and girls], and we're providing aid to foreign country to defend their own freedom!"
But in the end, as the America learned the hard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taliban#Relations_with_the_United_States) way (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saddam_Hussein) a number (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicaragua#Sandinistas_and_the_Contras) of times, that kind of behavior really just breeds warlords and corruption. If you want something, legitimate or otherwise, you have to own up to the responsibility and risk your own people.
...and if we (the citizens and the soldiers) don't like where they (the politicians) are sending our men, we can always kick their asses out of office or openly revolt.

Which the ISPs can't afford to do, and can't enforce anyway without all their customers getting absolutely fed up with terribly degraded service from having to inspect every packet.
Just another case of politicians legislating from their campaign funds (Big Content in this case) and passing laws without know one single fact about the topic and feasibility of their proposals. Or without considering the consequences of a broadly-written bill they passed as a knee-jerk reaction to some current event that caused some form of vocal minority outrage.
In other words, business as usual.

Welp! Nevermind. Turns out this story is almost completely bullshit. I feel dumb for buying into it so easily because in hindsight it was pretty sensationalist.
All the testimony coming from this guy was received using facilitated communication: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2009/11/really_this_guy_is_conscious.php
His parents also treated him as if he were conscious, so they spent those 23 years looking after him at home, talking to him, and taking him out socially. So even if he were conscious and aware, he certainly wasn't doing nothing. Most likely scenario seems to be that he's been taking a 23 year-long nap, and now his helpers are either intentionally or unintentionally making everything up.

Would you like to extend that line of thinking into science, and say that phenomena should be deemed true and existent until disproved?
Guilty until proven innocent increases the likelihood that crooks are caught, but at the price that a significant number of innocent people will also be wronged and needlessly suffer.
I could hit my head on some wall on the way home and blame some poor guy nearby for attacking me. Under "guilty until proven innocent", if he can't prove he didn't hit me, he'd be in for some trouble.

Like what?
"Guilty until proven innocent" is simply the thought of "Something (accusation) is right until proven wrong" put into a legal context. It is much harder to prove definitively that something is definitely incorrect in general, as opposed to prove with near certainty that something is likely to exist.
Not to mention the practicalities in a real life setting. Police go around making accusations while lawyers and the defendant have to scour around for evidence proving their innocence?
The idea is stupid to begin with.

Nothing like a nice "howdy do" to discourage people from whatever illegal/immoral business they have planned on the other side of the tracks. I hope this world hasn't fallen into complete anarchy until my generation has past.
It has advantages and disadvantages, and its hard to agree with the fact that using heuristics is a natural and often useful tool for humans. That being said, is it worth it to the harassed to have a measure of safety in exchange for a wrong accusation? Case in point: Last week, A restaurant owner in my neighborhood (who is from India) called in a robbery to the police. When the police arrived, they arrested him! And they detained him until he could pay bail. I have also been stopped twice and asked for I.D. while walking home from work ( I live and work in this same neighborhood).
I know that sometimes, people that look like him or me commit crimes, but then again, a lot of different types of people do bad things, and honestly both of those cases seem like incompetence on the police's part. Maybe our police should be better selected or something, because random profiling seems a lot like rolling the dice.

Well you are in Korea and those people are nuts so what do you expect?
Just kidding, I know you're probably talking about your old neighborhood in Chicago. I corrected your statement to say "hard to disagree with heuristics as a natural and useful tool for humans," as I imagine that's what you meant to say.
Profiling is like any sort of discrimination: sometimes you're right and sometimes you're wrong. Look at it like you're at the grocery store buying fruit. You make your selection based on the color of the fruit, the texture, firmness, and other traits. Sometimes you select the ripest most delicious fruit, other times the insides are rotted and flavorless. Can't win 'em all, but you have to make a selection or buy them all.

if you ever wondered how US government works
House Passes Bills on Last Day of Sessions (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/17/us/politics/17cong.html)
the difference in coverage stuff like this gets is also startling. the liberal media is touting it as "well, Obama has only had 11 months to get stuff done, and the House needed to pass these bills before the end of the year", while on the other side you see the focus on all the hidden spending, the riders tacked on to the bills.
It's pretty awful, I think, because it's not like anyone could actually vote against these bills to the extent that they wouldn't pass. The fact that they couldn't get budgets done earlier makes it seem, to me, that they were looking for something like this all along, so that they could reward all their lobbyists and special interests while telling the people "I HAD to pass this bill, otherwise the whole country would be fucked".

Decent looking women + porn don't usually go together.

Austalian government bans small breasts in porn (http://www.inquisitr.com/59472/millions-of-extra-sites-to-be-censorsed-as-australian-gov-bans-small-breasts-female-ejaculation/)
Under the guise of preventing child pornography. What the fuck, Australia? That makes no sense whatsoever. You've been weird about porn lately, but this is completely backwards and insane.
From a feminist perspective it's also completely degrading. It's just going to reinforce the "ideal form" that women have shoved down their throats in the media.

Basically, it's the first episode, but with mindless sex without, but the scenes they copy are almost perfect... in mimicry. The acting is horrible. if this was a highschool letter, I would have thought that it was completely hilarious, but in 2nd grade, this somehow seems a bit overboard. kids in that, age regardless of how smart they are, or how easy the task is, need some positive reinforcement.
of course, the 2nd part is still offthechains funny. I wonder why pennants allergy is so common over there, I've never met anyone with that allergy, and yet I hear that entire cafeterias are closing down to accommodate to their needs.

That's awesome. I actually watched the interviews as they aired because I heard about it beforehand. The 3rd segment was fine, but the first two were O'Reilly shouting "AHA GOTCHA" and then cutting away every time he nitpicked at one of Jon's points.
I'm impressed that Fox put up the entire interview uncut like they said they would. God knows they're not a bastion of journalistic integrity.
And despite O'Reilly's childishness, I think the two of them consistently produce good interviews with each other. It's good to watch Jon calmly and hilariously deflect every insult Bill throws at him.

Sarah Palin upset at Family Guy (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/8519570.stm)
Former US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin has criticised TV show Family Guy for "mocking" her son who has Down's syndrome.
Palin said on Facebook that an episode in which a character with Down's said she was daughter of the ex-governor of Alaska was "a kick in the teeth".
Funny how she can go on and on about the liberal media forcing its political correctness on everyone, and then turn around and do this.
Attention whore.

She should really be thanking them. At least where I am, pretty much everyone had forgotten about her. It got her name back into random Monday morning office banter and the news after she got all offended. Before this was, "Oh, she's going to be on Fox News now....yawn," a month or two ago.

To add to that, the actress that portrayed the character didn't approve of Palin's complaining; and fyi, she actually has Down Syndrome.

I would pat that kid on the shoulder if he had hit it with a pretty woman, but that gorilla is not someone you should bring home to mom. The worst part of this is the embarrassment for the boy. I have here the text of Joe Stack's suicide note, the man who flew his plane into an IRS building in Texas. Normally his actions could be dismissed as lunacy but he was so eloquent I can't help but wonder when this will happen next, and also wonder why no one has gone to these lengths yet. It's a bit of a long read but it magnificently reflects the deep rooted problems in the U.S. government and the people it has made bitter, poor and vengeful.

I passed by the building today that he flew the plane into and there are still slack-jawed yokels visiting the area and taking pictures. It's like people are making family outings to see the blowed up building. They're jamming up traffic and there are even police cars blocking off certain lanes to keep traffic flowing what with all the rubberneckers and gawkers. People are dumb.
