Good question. I would say ask the man himself.

But allow me to speculate if you will, Pikachu like all child actors have a dark side, underage drinking, drug abuse, sex with transgenders coupled low self-esteem; the list can go on, I am sure you know a few of them. And you know as time goes by most of them fall by the wayside and sink in to the dream of yesteryear using cheap booze and nyquil to numb their agony. Don't let the posh convertible car he drives or the wavy hair fool you, Assertn certainly sees his reflection in that image and distorted, aging Pikachu is his outlet. I hope that I answer your question.

Axiom alert.

It's just the wording.

If the question involved creating or producing something like a soap dispenser, then the red corrections would make sense.

On the other hand, because Maria starts with a board and she is to cut it, then obviously, the time it takes for her to cut the board into two pieces would take twice as long if she were to split the one original board into three.

Kraco
Sat, 09-03-2011, 02:20 AM
Whoever wrote that question is a failure of a human being that has never sawed a board. Even a rusty saw wouldn't take 10 minutes to cut through a single board.

Forgetting that detail, a math teacher correcting incorrectly such a simple question is a funny picture in my judgement.

Buffalobiian

Am i missing something? it can be both 20 or 15 minutes depending how you cut the board piece right?

No.

Cutting a piece of board into two pieces takes 1 cut. Cutting the board into three takes 2 cuts. If it takes 10 minutes to perform one cut, then two would take 20 minutes.

The marker is dumb enough to think instead that "cutting something into 2 pieces takes 10 minutes. Therefore, that's 1pc per 5 minutes - and 3 pieces must take 15 minutes.

The marker would be right if the question was about cutting pieces off a block of wood - in which case the bulk block would not count as a piece.

edit: well, actually, I take that back.

Yes, it can be 15 depending on how you cut the wood, but that's stupid, since you don't define the method as the quickest possible one, then you can answer with anything you want and justify it.

A scenario to fit the above example could be: the original block was a square. It takes 5 minutes to cut from one edge to the center, and another 5 minutes to do one from another edge in order to cut out a quadrant. Then you only have to spend 5 minutes cutting out a protruding bit to create another piece..

UChessmaster
Sat, 09-03-2011, 10:22 AM
Take the fictional board and do a vertical cut in the middle, two pieces, 10 minutes, now take either piece and do an horizontal cut, 3 pieces, 15 minutes. I guess that`s how the teacher saw it, which is not necessarily wrong, and before someone comes trolling i never said the 20 minutes answer was wrong.

I edited my post while you were posting I think, but yes.

Your scenario assumes that the board is twice as long as it is wide btw, which isn't stated in the question. ;)

Given the details of the question, I think it's pretty safe to say 20 is the only reasonable answer.

Kraco
Sat, 09-03-2011, 11:17 AM
There's a picture with a narrow wooden board and a typical saw right next to the text. If that wasn't relevant to the question and was there only to confuse people, the teacher should be sawed in half, slowly and with no magic tricks.

Xelbair
Sat, 09-03-2011, 12:11 PM
If there is more than one answer to the question, each of them should be good.
depending on how you visualize it:
1) cutting the board into 2 exact pieces - 10 minutes, cutting board into 3 exact pieces 20 minutes
2) cutting two pieces FROM the board - 10 minutes, so 5 minutes for piece
3) you are cutting the board in half parallel to the longer side - takes 10 minutes, you are calculating the (length cut)/(time), then you cut one of pieces parallel to the shorter side, etc - so it takes less time for each cut, but you lack the dimensions of the board to approach this angle.

anyways about teacher's mistakes.. one math teacher fucked up marking the questions on test(seriously - that test was for 4th grade of elementary school - yet the 50% of questions will only make sense to you when you are 3 years older or so, and some of those were phrased so badly that university students had no idea what they were supposed to mean.) - too bad that one of her pupil's parents was a university math teacher.

It doesn't have to be exact pieces, that's exactly why it would take 20 minutes to cut 3 pieces; even if you cut it in a ratio of 1:3:6 each cut will still take 10 minutes.

Prenup dude.

Women aren't out to steal your money, Jesus Christ.I don't think you'll find that many women who will sign a prenup. It's basically a signed statement that you both think shit won't work out and that she's a money-grubbing whore. Neither of which is what a woman wants to hear, true or not.

Then why do they take half our income every time? That's only in some states and only if she doesn't work. If you're a stay-at-home dad (my dream job) or you make less than her, you stand to take some of her $$ if you divorce.

Prenup dude.

Women aren't out to steal your money, Jesus Christ.

Prenuptial agreements have expiry dates. Just saying.

It's a risk all married people take and the courts do favor the women and they tend to take full advantage of it. With more than half of all marriages ending in disaster within 3- 5 years, it's a good idea to have a prenuptial agreement but it isn't foolproof. Also you don't have to be legally married to someone for them to be entitled to some form of compensation. There is something called "common law marriage" which means if you're living together with someone for a certain amount of time it is legally acceptable.

Personally I still want to get married, but to the right person. I only want to do it once.

I think the difference is that people can choose to be wicked or not, since we have free will. So even if you are wicked now, you can mend your ways and be good and the balance of your life is what determines if you were wicked or not. According to some religions, you can be wicked your entire life, then recant on your deathbed and all is forgiven. Bunch of bullshit.

But it's what makes humans greater than angels in some accounts, since we have the choice to be good or bad, so if we choose to be good, it's even better than being angelic, who have no choice about being good, they simply must be good.

The pizza delivery cars I see in these parts are painted all over with the company brand and info. They aren't normal cars carrying some plastic thing on the roof. It must be some business philosophy difference between forcing workers to use their own car or to have a company car. Nevertheless I can't see how it would be financially viable with a car like that, just like Ani said. Maybe it's a special delivery to rich people only, like if Assertn orders a pizza, they will use an Aston Martin to bring it.

Edit: Although now that Xel said it, I might be only seeing the special cases and if others use normal cars, I would never even know it's a pizza delivery.

You're the one getting all judgemental for some reason because someone posted a picture that you can't relate to.

@Archangel: Obviously, you are unfamiliar with the differences in transportation between cities. Even between cities in California, it's very different. San Fran has lots of public transportation, while in LA, everyone drives, lest they want to risk being run over on their bike or stuck next to a smelly homeless person on a bus (which is generally about 90% smelly homeless people). I know people who try to bike around here, and one guy wiped out pretty hard cause there aren't a lot of bike lanes and he got hit by a car. I got hit by a car myself when I tried riding a bike and some dumb broad was exiting a driveway. Typical European ignorance presumes driving a car = fat and lazy.

Animeniax

It's actually a really bad idea to label your car as a pizza delivery vehicle. Robbers know you have cash and free pizza. I had a friend who was a pizza delivery guy who got robbed while on a delivery. And he wasn't even driving an Aston Martin.

Like Assertn said, one of the hallmarks of American life are the vast distances between locations, particularly suburban homes and the retail/food districts. It would take 30+ minutes riding on very hilly terrain to deliver pizza to my house. So the last guy on your route would have to wait 2 hrs for his pizza. It's the reason the US is the biggest consumer of oil, we have the most cars because we have the most distance to go and mass transit is lacking. I think our person per square foot ratio is also one of the smallest in the 1st world.

You park your car and walk to the door of the apartment you are delivering to, which can sometimes be a good 100 yards away. People see you and know you've got cash for change and from sales, and you're encumbered by the hot pizzas and probably don't know the area.

We only had one company car, and our old boss kept that when he sold the business to the current boss. The drivers use their own cars for deliveries. The current boss did make them carry the plastic advertisement box on their cars for a while, but I think he's stopped now. It screws up the paint job on the car.

People oft call the products of evolution highly innovative, but in reality it takes the nature hundreds of thousands if not millions of years to come up with anything grander and then it's usually only one or two fancy characteristics per genus/tribe. I'm not saying you wouldn't find truly impressive things in the oceans, for example, but comparing it to human innovation is irrelevant. But if you must, then let's just say it's incredible how we can dream of anything in scifi fantasies. No other species on this planet can.

I can't wait until humans evolve us a third arm. Really you can't do much with just one arm, so if you lose one now, you're screwed. It would be nice to have one in reserve.

That kick was pretty slick, but only as effective as a bitchslap. It won him the fight though, which could have gone either way. Dude's nickname is "Showtime", which makes sense.

If it was like a bitchslap he didn't hit him good. Why did his opponent fall though? Surprised?

Knocked off balance + head got it?

I'm with Ani. As I'm watching the video I wondered how a kick with the leg that drove him off the wall could have been significantly damaging.

he pushed his leg off the wall surface to gain extra kick strength, add to that rotation too. It isn't your typical weak kick.

What happened in the actual match? Did the guy who fell stand back up immediately or was he affected?

It was at the end of a grueling 25 minute title fight, involving a lot of wrestling/grappling, so Bendo (the kickee) went down harder than he otherwise would have. It was a good kick to the face, don't get me wrong, but it was flashy more than anything. A solid kick would have KO'd the guy.

Killa-Eyez

True that. If he'd hit em with his instep on his jaw or neck in full swing, it'd be a done deal.
Honestly, I don't get why those fighters don't do these things more often. If you have the right techniques and focus there's a ton more kodak moments like this one. Uri Boyka all over the place.

In an MMA fight like these two are in, doing flashy moves are asking to get taken down and beat up on the ground. There are guys who are able to pull off flashy moves and still win, but most play it safe.

The kicker in this gif (Pettis) hasn't really been able to use the flashy moves because they haven't been effective against higher caliber competition that would have made him pay for trying a kick like that. Not that Bendo (the kickee) isn't high caliber, because he is.

Seeing that fight in real-time showed how slow it actually was. Definitely not the Jet-Li move the gif portrayed.

It's just as fast, the gif just has less frames so the movement seems to skip more.

Weird, I've had nightmares where I'm pumping my legs and arms trying to get away from pursuers like the guy in this picture, but no matter how hard I pump I don't move very fast away from them. It's something of a recurring nightmare too.

I think his name is Jonathan Ivey, who has a pro fighting record of 29-45. He loses this one.

Homuhomu version is actually better, though. Kind of sad for the original, but it can't be helped. Although I doubt for anybody else but those who have seen Madoka.

When I was reading the Homura version, I had a strange feeling in the back of my head I had seen something like it before, and then when somebody linked to the original on Sankaku, I realised I must have seen it somewhere on the Internet before.
