OMG! Have you guys heard of a band called Soilwork? I don't know if its mentioned but jeeze they are a kick ass swedish band man.
Songs- Overload, rejection role, song of the damned, why not just download the whole album?
Edit: Peter Wichers left the band (2005), he was one of the most kick ass guitarist of that band it sucks but hey band is still great

I've heard them-- they're only maybe a step above what I hear on the radio. But if you like them, you'd probably like a southern prog-metal band called Atheist.

Atheist are cool.
I've been listening to more of that folk metally stuff.. Dark Moor, Carved in Stone
The metal thread deserves more action than this..

I've found a really cool band. Red Sparowes. They have no vocals but the songs are very dynamic anyway. Check out the album At The Soundless Dawn.
Pain of Salvation's album Remedy Lane is good. It reminds me of Opeth and a little Porcupine Tree.
EDIT: Red Sparowes are really really really fucking good.

Some new finds
Katatonia - Viva Emptiness - Awesome vocals, they've got a Opeth feel to them.
Trivium - Ascendancy - Good shit, also good vocals
Unearth - The Oncoming Storm - Good screaming, good music
Fear Factory - Archetype - I really like the drums and the vocals

Lately I've been listening to Kamelot, good stuff.

Archetype is far from Fear Factory's best work. Check out Obsolete or Soul of a New Machine. But especially Obsolete.
Make sure you've got a good subwoofer. 300 watts at least.

Lacuna Coil - Comalies - I really like 'em. I haven't been a fan of female vocals in the past but LC pull it of excellently and it doesn't sound like some opera shit like it usually does when women+metal.

Comalies was good.. so was the band before they sold out to the U.S. mainstream, now their songs are totally watered down, repetitive drivel. And the male vocals are still pointless..
I like to stick with Nightwish, Within Temptation, Dark Moor and Carved in Stone for my female vocals. Tarja's gone from Nightwish though :(

The Sword - Age of Winter - I heard the track "Freya" in the game guitar hero and instantly fell in love with them. They have a very cool sound, it sounds almost as if they are some old prog band from the sixties. If you like Mastodon you will like The Sword.

Anyone list the band or actual classical band called "Apocalyptica" yet? They are pretty bad ass for a classical band because they turned most of Metallicas metal songs into classical music, I know it sounds kinda corny but hey just listen to them. The band mostly do metal/rock songs of artists like Slayer, Tool and Sepultura.

Clutch (http://www.last.fm/music/Clutch) - Blast Tyrant
This USA band has been playing together since the early 1990s, producing records at a rate of approximately one per year. Though each of Clutch's albums is marked by its own distinct and cohesive sound, the band's musical style may be said to have migrated from hardcore punk to hard rock and blues over the course of their career... Transmisson0 (http://www.last.fm/music/Transmission0) - Memory of a Dream
Incorporating heavy music with a soundscape influenced edge, transmission0 came out of the ashes of dutch hardcore band Reveal. With the break up of this band in 2001 guitarist Mischa van Rodijnen and bassplayer Dave van Beek decided it was time for a new chapter in their musical career. Being both big metalfans, but also fans of bands like Sonic youth and the Cure, they decided to try and link up these 2 styles of music in their songs... A belated thanks to Terracosmo for introducing me to EToS. Still not heard Virgin and a Whore yet but Chaotic Beauty and Before the Bleeding Sun are ace.
Dunno whether my taste just sucks or not, but maybe try these bands out.
Intestine Baalism - http://www.myspace.com/intestinebaalism
A Japanese death metal band who are pretty cool (imo), they're on metal-archives for a better description than I'd be able to give.
Blood Stain Child - http://www.myspace.com/bloodstainchildmusic
Another Japanese band, these started off sounding like a not-as-good version of Bodom (Something Wild-era) but recently they've put a load of trancy stuff in the music as well. The myspace site reckons they consider themselves influenced by 'Screamo' and Emo...I haven't heard much emo but I can't see it myself judging from what I've heard of it. Their 2nd album Mystic Your Heart is probably their best imo, the song Artificial Mind on the myspace site is the only one on there from that album.

Within Temptation's new album The Heart of Everything is out and I dare say it's their best as of yet. The Truth Beneath The Rose and The Cross are personal favorites of moi.
Get it by whatever means available and listen to it. It may be a bit soft for some metal heads but it's nonetheless absolutely beautiful. And we all love a little bit of beauty, don't we?

Been listening to DevilDriver a lot lately, their first album is what keeps me going on the way to work each morning. If you get a chance, listen to "I dreamed I died" which is probably my favourite track on the CD, it's just too awesome.
Their second album, "The Fury of Our Maker's Hand", I'm not so familiar with so far but it's growing on me. Album 3, "The Last Kind Words", is released in early June, yaay!
I've loved these guys ever since they supported Fear Factory out here in Australia. Never really got into Coal Chamber but this is like a whole new beginning for Dez.

Just found out the other night that Dragonforce are doing a brief tour here, I have to go, I can't imagine them playing their music live. It'll be interesting to say the least.
Picked up Static-X's new album tonight, "Cannibal", and it's pretty damned good from what I've heard so far. But, there aren't many fans of the band on these boards so I guess my comments will fall on deaf ears. :p

After Wisconsin Death Trip and to a lesser extent Machine, Static X just never did it for me anymore. The songs weren't as catchy or fluid, and they softened up quite a bit. I haven't heard anything from Cannibal, I'll check it out.
There are so many other power metal bands with way more talent than Dragonforce. By all means if Manowar or Edguy come around, they are a must to see.

Hey now, there are more metal fans here than you think. I really like Static X. Good study music. I haven't heard any of their new album but maybe I'll check it out.
My music collection has been rather 'static' lately, in the sense that I haven't added any new tunes to it in a long time. Sometimes, I'll go to turn my computer off at night and try to turn off my speakers, only to find that they were never on. I sit in silence in front of my computer without even realizing it.

God I love Power Metal, so very very much. It's so epic, uplifting, emotional. I found the concert to be incredibly moving, laugh if you will. Also, entertaining. Extremely entertaining. My adrenaline was pumping like crazy.

I can't believe Sonata Arctica's new album Unia hasn't been mentioned yet. Yeah, it's a bit different but it's nevertheless quite the pleasurable experience once you've listened it in. I feel the album as whole is highly Queen inspired with My Dream's But A Drop Of Fuel For A Nightmare taking the cake as far as inspiration goes.
Personal favorites would be The Vice, Fly With The Black Swan and indeed the aforementioned My Dream's But A Drop Of Fuel For A Nightmare. All in all it's a slightly more demanding album but I feel it's easily one of their best.

Time to practice some necromancy and raise this thread from Hel. Make it so.
Being bored with my collection I set myself on a path to find something new and interesting that I could enjoy. Naturally, my very first thing to tap into was the Finnish metal scene and in there I found this gem of a band called Turmion Kätilöt (http://www.turmionkatilot.com/). As I haven't seen them mentioned here I shall go ahead and recommend them. It's a pretty crude band but I enjoy them on more than one level.
All of their songs that I've heard are in Finnish so if you can't get over that you probably won't enjoy it much... but as Finnish is demonically awesome I suggest you learn to fucking like it. The lead vocalist also growls but as he actually pronounces his stuff I rather like it. My personal favorite lyrically and vocally would by far be Irstauden Ilosanoma (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAU5aX5oxKE). Much thanks to the totally awesome metal chick and the fucking amazing lyrics not to mention that heavenly chanting. I do appreciate dire contrasts.

Someone other then me that knows of this band. can't believe it. Ever since i heard them this have been on of my favorite bands. Unfortunately it's pretty hard to find anything on DC++ and other places. Specially in original releases. So far i think Seinä is still my favorite song. And by the way, their lyrics are crazy. This is practically the Finnish version of Rammstein (only better IMO). They have released 2 albums (that i know if at least) so far. Their first is named "Hoitovirhe". Their second album is named "Pirun Nyrkki". If you ask me which one is best i would have a hard time answering that since i think both are pretty much equal. But if you want one to start out with i would go with "Hoitovirhe" because that's the one that got me into this band. Specially songs like "Teurastaja" (first one i heard which got me to download their album in the first place), "Seinä" and "Paha Ihminen".
So if you like Finnish metal, specially industrial metal, or love Rammstein and would love the idea of a harder, faster, Finnish version and like Nai said, have no problem with every song text being in Finnish this is the band for you. And if you are Finnish or have a friend that can translate some of text you will have a nice laugh about it too.

Would've posted this as an edit in the "What are you listening to right now ?" thread in response to the heretic azazel's post, but since the post turned into a sort of review, it's probably more appropriate for this kick ass and far too ignored thread.
Just heard the two leaked opeth songs. Both of them are fucking amazing. I mean it, FUCKING AMAZING! I keep reading things about the Porcelain Heart being relatively weak because it's not a pure headbanger song, but there are other things that Opeth is about, and sadness is one of those things. This is possibly the song where Akerfeldt is being the more honest and unmasked about his grief than any other song, and you hear it not only through the lyrics, but sonically through the music. What I'm mentioning isn't unique to Opeth, but they do it so damned well. The Lotus Eater...you'll just have to listen to that. Growls, clean/melodic and POWERFUL vocals over the most brutal riffs you'll ever hear, complex and wonderfully arranged, and even a dream theater sounding little diddy around the six minute mark.
For anyone who isn't turned off by progressive and death metal, and who really knows how to listen, these songs will prove to be stunning. If the past is any indication of what a future Opeth album will sound like, I think we can expect this new album to be one of their best recordings yet.

Holy shit, thanks alot for introducing me to Opeth guys. They're fucking awesome, I haven't been this exited about finding a new band to thoroughly listen to since discovering Dream Theater about a year ago. Ghost Reveries Rules.
Glad you enjoyed it. And, since Opeth is new to you, you should know that they have a rather large catalogue for you to wet your pants to xD. I remember when I had just found out about Opeth (and Dream Theater for that matter)...those were the days..
Also check out Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt laying vocals on Bloodbath's new album Unblessing the Purity.
Bloodbath fucking rule.
Checking them out right now.

Bloodbaths usual lead singer is Peter Tagtgren of Hypocrisy. One of my top 3 death metal bands ever. I'd recommend the song Roswell 47. I never tire of government conspiracies involving aliens as subject matter for songs.
I am delighted this thread is active again.

Possibly not a popular notion in this thread, but I'm currently listening to the new (leaked) Slipknot album, "All Hope Is Gone". I'm liking it so far, especially the first single "Psychosocial" which is fantastic.
They seem to be somewhat influenced by Stonesour this time around, which is understandable I guess considering Corey spends a lot of time on that side of the fence these days.

Well, I just downloaded some new music for the first time in....over two years. Yes, I know, I don't update my playlists very much. Anyways, one of my friends had told me to check out a band called Scar Symmetry, so I finally did, and I'm really enjoying them. Those Swedes certainly know how to write metal.

I just have added Made of Hate - Bullet in Your Head album. I head those guys at Iron Maiden concert in Warsaw as a support, and they were awesome. Their first cd, and the only one for now, is just purely awesome, i especially love first track - its great while playing fighting games.
Also i rediscovered Kamelot, Slayer and tool. And i hope that i don't have to mention my megadeth, metallica, and lacuna coil obsession.

Alright, metal fans, you're in for a treat! The new Lamb of God album, Wrath, has all of it's tracks posted on youtube, go check it out! Here's my favorite track off the album thus far:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrApyFJr0SY&feature=related
The song is brutal. And the brutality lies not only in the loudness or the the distortion, but a fucking INCREDIBLE riff, magnificent arrangements, impeccable playing, killer drumming, and note bending at just the right time to make you rise up and break shit! This doesn't happen often gotwoot metalheads. If you haven't already, go go go go go!

I'm pretty obsessed with this album at the moment. I'm listening to it over and over. They take so many risks and they all pay off - I especially love the acoustic solo at the end of Burden where the guitar constantly is going out of tune. Sounds risky on paper but it works so well in practice. The general production of the album seems to be through the roof, it's flawless.

I'm in the same boat at the moment... I have no idea why it's taken me so long to discover this band, but here we are and I'm loving what I'm hearing. My only regret is not going to the gig when they were here a few months ago.
Glad you enjoyed it. And, since Opeth is new to you, you should know that they have a rather large catalogue for you to wet your pants to xD. I remember when I had just found out about Opeth (and Dream Theater for that matter)...those were the days..
Duly noted - I just went out and bought the lot. Got a lot of listening ahead.

Opeth is about to come to Memphis with Enslaved in May. The concert scene around here has been so pathetic lately so I can hardly contain myself.

Pathetic is here in Gdansk, one sabaton concert in May, one is November last year, and half country south one Iron Maiden. other than that - nothing.

Um...just found out that Ozzy has a cover of John Lennon's "Woman"....LOL!! xD....*cough*
...yeah, just had to let that out. In the interest of avoiding a shitpost, I'll take this opportunity to mention that Leaves' Eyes (LE) recently dropped a new album. It's called "Njord" I'm not sure how gotwoot headbangers feel about them, but I'll just mention that the album has crunchier, less boring riffs than you find on their previous albums, while some songs are actually quite brutal while retaining a high level of musicianship. The drummer of Opiate for the Masses during their later years is the current drummer for LE. He brings a hell of a lot of energy to the table. I should say though, on the previous albums, it's usually the more "tender" moments that stood out and made the band feel different from other symphonic metal bands. On this record, there are a lot of moments that'll remind you of nightwish, though not even close to enough to make you feel that LE are nightwish clones. Also, the attempts at "tender" moments pale in comparison to those of previous albums and EPs. They definitely brought the metal though.

Just went through this thread again from the beginning. I missed a hell of a lot the first time around even though I discovered some of the stuff through other means. Metal is a beautiful thing.
And yeah, I simply couldn't make the NY or NJ shows that Opeth played back in May. I won't make the same mistake again.

Does Soundgarden really count as metal?
That's cool that they're reuniting, but I can't see them staying together for long. For some reason Cornell likes to break up with his bands.

Oh man, I was so fucking excited, but then I read the article. I mean, I guess the "average" soundgarden fan might see something new, but depending on how much unreleased material there is, I doubt there are very many soundgarden songs I haven't heard. Plus, Soundgarden without Matt Cameron on drums just wouldn't be the same, and I hear he's really digging being with Pearl Jam. I was just about to call everyone too :-(.
And, while not every Soundgarden song is metal, most of their songs incorporate metal, and a lot of their songs are outright metal. "Grunge" was nothing but a fusion of metal + punk/post punk/ 80s alt rock. Each song's sound depended on how heavily present each "ingredient" was.

Oh I hope you're not asking me that. I am so not talking to you.
And Barles.. they weren't even discussing a reunion 6 months ago, just a box set... but even if they don't make a new album this is my last chance to see them live.

The new Opeth album gets released on the 20th of September, but we get a taste of what's to come right now:
http://stereogum.com/766792/opeth-the-devils-orchard-stereogum-premiere/franchises/haunting-the-chapel/
Scroll down a little and click on that large orange, circular play button.
This is another song from Opeth devoid of any death growls, favoring Mikeal's clean vocals instead. And this is apparently going to be the MO for the entire album. This song in particular is a bit different than what I'd have expected. Opeth has always combined multiple genres in their composition, but I'm not sure most would have called them a "fusion" band. This song though seems to be a "fusion song". It's lighter on the metal without being a ballad, completely embracing odd-time signatures, tempo changes, with jazz melodies and rhythms. The unsettling feel common to most of Opeth's music remains.
Personally, I love the song. It's right up my alley, musically speaking, and there's so much in it to hear, so that multiple listens will reveal new things to most of us. However, if this song is indicative of the album's sound as a whole, I think this album is going to be the most polarizing of all of Opeth's records. The song leaves behind the familiar formula established with every record since still life, yet, it's instantly recognizable as an expansion of elements the band's always made use of. Really looking forward to this record.

I don't know, I've listened to the song a couple times and it just isn't growing on me, though I'll surely listen some more. The end is killer but the rest is kind of bland. Watershed had a couple high points but I wouldn't rank it among Opeth's classics, and I enjoyed all its tracks more than I did the Devil's Orchard. Well, still excited to listen to the new album.

Cannot wait for this album. I agree with Barles - I love the way they continue to push all the boundaries and seemingly keep reinventing themselves. As I stated a couple of years ago on this very page Watershed was very important to me at the time (and still is) and this album seems to be the next logical step, while at the same time they've taken some risks. Yay for Opeth all over again!

It was more of an alternative band, not very metal if I recall, but if you were willing to stretch the definition of what metal is, then I gueeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssssss, you could call them metal. They were pretty good though. I wonder what he's up to nowadays, their myspace page is not kept. I'm thinking Terra might've killed himself. Mind mind tends to go to those places >.>

Just found some stuff on youtube for Overworld, which is actually a proper metal band. They're looking for a vocalist so what they have posted are instrumental tracks. Here's one of them:

Not too shabby, and if that's Terra on drums, then he's improved *tremendously* both skill-wise and stylistically.
