phew .. missed this thread =)
and , excuse me if I'm mistaking, and although the mix-up is understandable, I thought Metal and Goth were still two seperate things. Not that you do not encounter both at rockfests, but You always see the differences. For example, goths always crowd to the front of the stage as soon as nightwish or after forever (etc) enter, but they tend to just hang in the back when bands such as Slayer or Bodom enter.
Personally..hm.. Well I've got quite a widespread taste.
Ive got all complete albums of (except for the latest of Rammstein)

I hope you aren't insinuating that Queen is metal i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif
Of course metal and goth are different things. Metal is music, goth was originally a style (from "gothic") often affilated with the middle ages. Since it was often dark, it has lived on and has become a style of clothing and music style. Hence why goth music is often depressing & dark. "the goths" as you call them are people wearing these dark clothes and whatnot. I don't know what goths would do in front of Nightwish though since it's as far from gothic metal as you can get...

Dark, serious music. Often accompanied by violins and lyrics about broken hearts. That is generally considered gothic music. Note that gothic is a genre in itself so there's gothic rock, gothic metal (of course) and even gothic pop. There is a significant difference between gothic metal & doom/black.
Good examples of gothic bands are Type O Negative & Entwine. Listen to those and you'll find out what gothic metal is. It's a good genre to listen to when you want some emotional music. I'd point out HIM as example too as they actually are gothic, but they suck so much that I won't bring myself to doing that...

Hello all, I've been away for awhile, but that's cuz this semester's been motherfucking hectic. I'll bore you guys with that later. My birthday is Dec. 8th, and this year, someone somewhere thought it would be a cool fucking joke to kill Dimebag Darrell as a present. I can't imagine that anyone who would even bother looking in a metal thread should need an introduction to this man, but I'll give it anyway, just in case. Dimebag Darrell aka Darrell Abbott was the guitar player for Pantera, one of the awesomest bands ever to grace the earth. When Pantera broke up, he and his brother formed Damageplan, which is an extremely cool band in its own right. As I've already stated, he died on december 8th of this year. Some fucktard decided to walk on stage and shoot him 5 times all in his midsection. The murderer was shot to death by some cop, but not before he took out three other people.
That's the gist of it. So I'm here to voice my grievances. Its too fucking bad that bastard got killed at that concert with the gentleness of bullet. I swear I'd kill the guy myself if given the chance. Too bad, right? Well whatever. I'm filled with grief. Sure I didn't really know the guy personally, but I feel that through his music, I somehow did. Pantera's music has been so important to me for years. Always enhanced a good mood. Always alleviated a bad one, or helped me to focus. It's pathetic that I don't have the words to explain this. Anyway, RIP Dime. As I'm sure has been said millions of times since last wednesday, you'll be missed, sorely missed.
If anyone actually care, I'm currently preparing for finals and I'll be back in a couple of weeks. Take good care everyone.

How is it that the hip hop thread has been on the front page for so long while this one has gotten lost? Time to bring it back. I need some music suggestions. Does anyone know any good metal bands that do primarily instrumental music? I like to put music on when I'm reading or studying, and sometimes I find lyrics too distracting. All I have at the moment that fits this category is Apocalyptica, and I'm starting to get tired of them. I need some more variety. Ideas?

yay this thread is back. if anyone has been in hibernation and just come out for the summer, you might not have heard the new NIN album is out (well, a couple of weeks back now) and is pretty damn awesome. id say theyve gone back more to their pop roots ala pretty hate machine rather than industrial metal like some of their other stuff, but damn with teeth is still good. lots of dif pace and style mixed up in the album and i think it works well. highlights are probs "only", "all the love in the world", and their single "the hand that feeds", altho i bet other songs will grow on me in time just like with everything else trent reznor produces.
other than that, ive been listening to At The Gates who are pretty good, heavier than my usual tastes, but worth checking out

I should come out and recommend some stuff. First i will say that Finntroll and Exhumed isn't really study music in my opinion and not instrumental either, both got singers and harsh ones at that.
Gamma ray, German power metal with Kai Hansen(past helloween member) as frontman. the albums Powerplant, which got a killer ending song, Armageddon. And Somewhere out in space which got one of the best songs ever in my opinion as opener, Beyond the Black Hole.
And i would like to second that Elvenking kicks ass. Great music, try out their album Heatenreel.
Judas Priest is a must if you haven't already tried them out. Painkiller got some really good songs. and Screaming for Vengeance is good to a little softer tho.

Chris Poland's (Megadeth) album Return to Metalopolis is pretty good.

Nice with the bumping of this thread i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif For study music, I usually have on a mixture of trance and tori amos, but if that's too gay for you, try out the liquid tension experiment. Its an instrumental band which is a side project of a couple of dream theater members. So, think dream theater without the singing, and that's pretty much what you have.

Well there are many bands that I can suggest. As a substitute for the extremely overrated Cradle of Filth I'd recommend first and foremost Anorexia Nervosa (might be -too- extreme though) and otherwise Dimmu Borgir which is also quite an overrated band but nontheless quite good. If you like Norther & Kalmah, then move on to Eternal Tears of Sorrow (very similar to Kalmah). In the Nightwish/Coil vein there are also many bands, perhaps After Forever will be your cup of tea.
Bear in mind though that many of these bands need time to sink your teeth into, the thing about mallcore is that it's very easy to get into (which is why those bands have followers even amongst those who do not necessarily like "heavy" music) so, well, only try the bands out if you want to see what metal really is about. i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif

Good Dimmu songs to start with: Mourning Palace, Kings of the Carnival Creation ... and just about everything else from the albums Enthrone Darkness Triumphant & Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia.
Filth is becoming quite commercial as well. I don't really know why though, I don't think they are -that- easy to listen to, yet fucking 14-year olds with their 50 Cent shirts have started to like them. It's strange. I guess it's because of Dani (who is a short fucking moron, by the way)

Opeth is a good band, albeit pretty hard to get into. Though that varies as well, some seem to find them very listenable. I guess it's a matter of preference.

Dudes... metal really isn't all that great... I mean there are maybe a dozen decent tracks out of a dozen or so albums from various artists but nobody really rocks the house anymore. I don't consider Linkin Park to be metal, and Metallica hasn't done much for me with their more recent music.... Bands like Staind and Biskit just stick way too close to the same formula and I often struggle to tell their songs apart from one another.

After that post it is clearly that you have never tried any significant metal. To name Linkin Park, Bizkit and Staind as your examples show how little you know.
And saying that back when those guys played they didn't give a shit about what people think and played what they wanted. Guess what, metal bands do the same, real ones anyway. Maybe you should test some real metal the suggestions in here are good enough for you to try.
Anorexia Nervosa, Gamma Ray, Ensiferum, Elvenking, Iron Maiden. All diffrent flavours of great metal i suggest you try some out before you speak. If you still don't enjoy metal i can't help you. If that's the case your musical taste is obviously broken so keep the negative talk about metal out of here, this thread is for us who appreitiate the genre.
With that said i'll let you people have taste of some old hard rock the predecesors of metal if you will and they do indeed wipe the floor with all those bands listed by masamuneehs.
Deep Purple. Try out Machine head, great album. Highway Star and Smoke on the Water are the most memorable tracks on this album and Smoke on the Water got one of if not the most famous Riff ever.

It saddened me to read masemune's post also because it proves that some people believe that the "fuck that, I'll do what I want to do" attitude is gone.
The only difference is that nowadays you need to turn off your TV & your radio set and actually GET INTO the music to find what it's about.
20 years ago, hardrock & the early heavy metal was much more commercial than it is today... people could hear bands like Sabbath & Zeppelin everywere. Metal isn't everyday music anymore. To "cover that up" people believe that the heirs of oldschool metal is mallcore and nu metal. That is just -wrong- on soooo many levels.

You expressed no wish to learn anything about metal, your post purely stated that metal isn't good.
That, my friend, is in no way deserving of my advice. Why give advice to a wall?
Also, if your intention was something other than flaming, you did extremely poorly.
The funniest thing about your most recent post is that you make it sound like you're the victim when it was you who just talked out of your ass for no apparent reason. I mean, what kind of moron says that an entire genre of music sucks and then states 4 bands out of which only one is actually metal? Blind Guardian is good and so is Demons and Wizards (heard their new album?).
Dream Theater is so-so, too much flashy instrumental for me. Iced Earth is okay, Iron Maiden is a given.
Metallica used to be good. Nightwish is one of my favorite bands. Finntroll rules!
Kamelot! The first metal band I bought an album of. Ownage.
Nemesea! Cool! I thought I was the only one who had heard this new band. I downloaded their album because "Mana" is a great title i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif
Sonata is a great band, Symphony X, Within Temptation & Yngwie have their bits and pieces of good stuff.
Can't say anything else about the rest of the bands, some bands in particular make me cringe... such as Kittie & Dreadlock Pussy (what kind of a fucking name is that? lol)

Mon, 06-27-2005, 04:52 PM
well, I was buying the silent force, which is WT's latest album... and the guy in the record store went like: hey, if you are into that kind of music, listen to this...
so.. he shoved the nemesea cd in my hands, said they were new... and i listened... and I thought they sounded pretty good i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif So... I got educated because of my record store i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif so it's NOT downloaded! *gasps*
I've actually met Dreadlock Pussy in person i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif. Me and a friend were just trying to go backstage, so we walked and wanted to see where the fences would be.... Thing was... there were no fences i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif. So before we knew it, we stood right in front of those guys... With random people on the other side of fences (there WERE fences after all, silly us for not seeing them! i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif). We asked the guys "why are they behind the fences and not here, seeing as there's no obstruction to get here?" and they replied that we were probably smarter i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif
Anyway, one thing about sonata arctica... they are cool.. but they have SO many lingual errors, it's hilarious... same as nightwish i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif.. But it's all in good fun and even though their wording/pronounciation is off sometimes, it's still very good music *nods*
On Iced Earth, they are definately one of my favourites, but only with Barlow as the vocalist... Not too big a fan of owens and the guy they had in the beginning... Barlow rules... seriously... too bad he wanted to go and do something else...
WT is DEFINATELY improving lately... I knew their music for a bit when they first came out, but sometimes I've found flaws in her vocals. They are noticably improving, and the music and the atmosphere on the last album are awesome i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif
Ambeon is one of Ayreon's projects. The singer has a beautiful voice.
Warlock is one of my latest discoveries. They are german, and they have a female lead singer who sings "normally" so no grunts or soprano voices... just normal singing i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif So that's very very cool...
Sheesh! long post! i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif
Terracosmo
Mon, 06-27-2005, 05:21 PM
I didn't know about Ambeon actually! Then again I was never a big fan of Ayreon either.
I agree with you about Sonata's lingual errors, they really are hilarious, especially in the ballads... they are supposed to be emotional, yet sometimes you actually laugh. Kinda sad i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif Hehe.
However I don't agree about WT. I feel that The Silent Force was a big step down, before they felt more unique and did more beautiful and atmospheric music... they took a step towards Evanescence this time around. Some people, mainstream-lovers in particular it seems, liked that. I didn't. Ah well.
Nemesea fills their void pretty nicely for me though. I expect much of these guys in the future. i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif
And about Iced Earth I agree as well. I don't dislike Owens at all, but Barlow really -was- Iced Earth, his voice separated that band from many others.
The Heretic Azazel
Mon, 06-27-2005, 06:49 PM
Agreed on the Iced Earth thing with Barlow as the vocalist, but The Glorious Burden still kicked ass.
I wonder if these guys actually still use English professors to help write lyrics.
By the way, has anyone here gotten into Biomechanical yet? They are like Pantera with a power metal edge. I strongly suggest getting the songs Relinquished Destiny and Long Time Dead.
They are only two years old and people think they could make the metal world that much more interesting.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll add it to my evergrowing list of bands I need to get into.
Right now I'm listening to Anathema. They used to be doom/death metal but today they play atmospheric hardrock or something to that effect.
Their latest album, A Natural Disaster, is quite good. Pick it up if you want some beautiful and at the same time gloomy music.

nothing against the ripper either, but yeah.. he's just not barlow i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif
and yeah... barlow is uber i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif
glorious burden was a good album on itself, musicwise... I'm just not too big of a fan of the entire US theme... but that's just me i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif
on a side note... evanescence didn't have a russian choir, or a bigass orchestra i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif
though you'll have to agree with me on sharon's vocals improving dramatically... less squeaking and all that...
sonata arctica... *giggles*
sometimes I'm wondering why you look me and you blink your eye
*looks confused*
and it's a VERY sensitive ballad i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif
then, the next song:
I cannot understand you, to me you live in a world of chaos
is that about their lyrics? i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif
anyway, still like them a lot i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif
also, nightwish's "billiges" in walking in the air are absolutely wonderful i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif

Tarja's talking during the concerts is hilarious too, her spoken english is so damn broken it ain't funny.
And of course WT aren't -exactly- like Evanescence, they are vastly superior to that band, but the last effort felt like it was heading in that direction... if you know what I mean.
I don't think she's less squeaky, to me she sounds as overdramatic as she always does i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif

Warmen, the solo effort of Children of Bodom's keyboardist, is coming out with a new album (their third).
Right now I'm listening to the new single from that album, Somebody's Watching Me (cover of some 80's song).
It's pretty bad actually. But it's still funny because the guest vocalist is none other than Alexi Laiho (yeah, Bodom's vocalist) and he uses a clean voice half of the time. It's not the first time he does that, but it's equally weird every time and this time it's even... ehh... worse. Or something. Also, it's funny that he tosses in random cursing in the song. For example:
Chorus goes like this:
"I always feel like somebody's watching me
(Alexi input: HEY WHO IS THE MOTHERFUCKER WATCHING ME?)
I don't feel safe anymore
(Alexi input: NOT SAFE DAMNIT)"
Etc.
Well, hope the album is better.

If I'm not mistaken that was done by Maxwell in the 80's, and Michael Jackson actually sung the chorus.

Right now I'm listening to Running Wild, I'd call it heavy metal with a power metal edge. It's an old german band, has been around since the 80's, and their image is "piracy". I.e they dress themselves as pirates and their songs are about pirates and gold and treasure maps and etc. But damn, it's a really good band. My favorite albums:
Under Jolly Roger (1987, this was the album that established their pirate image)
Blazon Stone (1991, their most popular album)
Black Hand Inn (1994, my favorite album, perhaps their best)
Rogues en Vogue (2005, just because it shows that the old men still got it)
Also, the vocalist is called Rock n' Rolf. COOLEST NAME EVAR!

Blah, can't believe I didn't see this thread sooner!
Sonata Arctica - My favorite metal band. Their lyrics are frickin' ingenious, especially Don't say a Word.
Nightwish - Absolutely hate their newer songs, but I adore the older ones like Everdream and Dead Boy's Poem.
Within Temptation - Latest album was a bit too mainstreamed for my tastes. But I still did enjoy Angels and Jillian.
Dark Moor - Good Italian band with really unique vocals. Well, at least they used to be until the singer was replaced with some useless dumbfuck. I recommend A Truth Of Me, Dies Irae ( Amadeus ) and Wood Song.
Kamelot - Completely awesome band. Very nice themes.
Rhapsody - Whenever you want metal with lyrics composed by a man looking for the most epic words he can find in a dictionary. The standard Rhapsody song will go somewhat like this; "TEAAAAAARS OF BLOOOOOOOOOOD RAAAAGING IN THE ETERNAAAAAL STORM OF DRAGON POWER!" You probably get the point. The sad part is that it fuckin' rocks. Yes, I do love my Rhapsody.

Since Iron Maiden are playing in Sweden tonight i thought i would recommend some maiden, hell download their entire discography. If you by any chance haven't heard Maiden start with the album "The number of the beast" really captures what Maiden is about, a great introduction album. I really doubt anyone haven't heard them tho. 2 of their most famous songs are on that album "666 the number of the beast" and "Run to the hills".

Myself, I have a Maiden ticket but I'm not going. Why? Well... long story.
Basically I've spent 40 bucks on a ticket I ain't gonna use, while somewhere in our country there are people who could kill for a ticket.
Life is unfair!
PSJ
Sat, 07-09-2005, 06:23 AM
To fucking unfair. At least i managed to sell my ticket. But i have pretty much accepted my situation right now, gonna see the gig on TV instead. I'm still trying to figure out why i got struck with sudden dicease right now as it fucked up my work, a holiday and the Maiden gig.
Got a call from a friend who are gonna see the gig today, he stands in line right now and said to me over the phone "I'll call when they play Fear of the dark or Wickerman", both songs they won't play. I'm not fucking gonna take any calls while im watching the gig on TV.
Saw a documentary yesterday about Maiden and guess what it made me even more interested in the gig. But what the fuck the guys are still young, around 45 or so and they like the swedish fans so they'll be here again in a couple of years, im fucking gonna buy every ticket next time and have them all to myself.
UP THE IRONS!

PSJ, you must be on the brink of death to give up your Maiden tickets. It's equally crappy that neither you nor Terra is going. Hope you get better soon, man.
Anyways, I saw Iron Maiden a couple years ago. It was pretty random actually, I was just walking down the street and a friend who I hadn't seen in forever pulls up beside me in his car and says, "We're going to see Iron Maiden. Want to come? Hop in!" I
It was a pretty awesome concert. Those guys sure know how to put on a show. They're old dudes now, but they have so much experience with playing concerts and it shows. They know exactly how to make the crowd happy, and they're just really comfortable on stage, always thinking up crazy antics that will amuse their fans.

Yea i'm feeling pretty crappy right now. Been sick for 2 weeks now going for my third. I don't know what the dicease is called in english but i think i heard somewhere that it's called kissing dicease, you get it through saliva and other body fluids.
They're not that old. Dio is still rocking and he is at least 15 years older than Maiden, Black Sabbath recently reunited and they're like 55 years old so the Maiden boys got a couple of years left.
Did you go to the Brave New World gig? That was like 2000. If i could i would go back in time and see the Brave new world gig at rock in rio, said to be the best Maiden gig ever. Haven't gotten around to get the dvd of that gig tho which is a shame.

I saw bits of it on TV, it was decent, but halfway through I felt like drumming myself (I'm a drummer) so I turned it off and went away to play some of my own instead.
I'm not really a fan of Maiden's old stuff. I only dig "the classics".

I've seen quite a number of bands, and it's really hard to name a favorite.
I think a future favorite gig is coming up: Sentenced, 30th of July.
There's this festival in Sweden (which Rammstein is headlining!), and just recently I found out that Sentenced is gonna do their final Sweden gig there. Sentenced is one of my favorite bands, and their lyrics have meant so infinitely much for me. It has been a long-time dream to see them before they split up (which they are going to do within the next few months) and seeing it come true is really indescribable for me.
Anyway, out of the concerts I've seen so far my favorite would either be the first time I saw Nightwish; about a year ago. There was something special about that concert, and I had gotten my Once signed just before the gig (I lined up in 3 hours i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif). Great stuff. Also, the first time I saw Edguy... it was at a REALLY hot place, and everybody were leaning on each other. You really got the sense of "the metal family" when that happened. We were together in the heat, united to bang our heads with Tobias Sammet. There is nothing I hate more than a bad audience. When I saw Metallica, there was this ugly son of a bitch (I swear I'm going to hunt him down one day and slit his throat) who nicked my great right in front of the stage position. Now you might think "shit happens, it was a concert" but this fucker did it while I was helping a bloody uncouncious girl to escape from the damn sea of headbangers! I single-handedly lifted the girl over the fence (she had a very tight body by the way) and helped her to the guards. I WAS A DAMN HERO! And how does the world repay me? By granting that retard my place just when Master of Puppets started.
ASSHOLE!

I would love to see Edguy, they're a great band, and I did check out Metallica at Summer Sanitarium in 97 with Korn, Kid Rock, System of a Down and Powerman 5000.
Besides that my other two greatest concerts were Superjoint Ritual and Six Feet Under. Both were opened by a GREAT hardcore band from New York called Full Blown CHaos, and they're hitting it pretty big right now. Man and I almost met Phil Anselmo... fucker. I haven't actually been to a single metal show yet in my life.... I was supposed to see Maiden but heck that fucked up(read above posts where i whine).
I'll comment on the show anyway as it was broadcasted on TV which i of course saw.
Great fucking show and the fans just made it better. No band got sing-a-longs like Maiden. You should have heard Running Free, the sing-a-long on that song was insane i almost started crying because i wasn't there but at the same time smiled just cause i had the fortune to see this.
Phantom of the Opera followed by Hallowed be thy Name was fucking knockout, 2 epic tracks in a row fuck that was awesome. Remember Tomorrow was also an amazing song Bruce never have done live before this tour as far as i know and it was fantastic.
The heavy three, Number of the Beast, Run to the Hills, The Trooper were amazing as they should be, great sing-a-long on Beast and Hills.
Bruce handled all the old Di'Anno songs better than DI'Anno did. Bruce is fucking amazing, they should re-record the 2 first albums with Bruce.
Dave, Adrian and Janick had a hell of alot of wicked solos through out the show, These three and Bruce is the core of Maiden music, The fury of three guitars playing together with Bruce's screaming and what not is World class.
Steve and Nicko are of course also amazing, But these two are a bit more laidback on stage, Nicko for a reason he is up there with the drums and he seems to know his shit. Steve joins in with the guitarists now and then which is cool to have all four of them playing side by side.
The energy Janick and Bruce shows on stage is hard to beat tho, they are fucking everywhere, Burce running around like a mad dog or something and Janick throwing his guitar in the air every other second it's amazing to see 45 year olds with such energy.
New studio album will be released next winter fuck i can hardly wait.

Think of it as generic hardrock with techno elements, I suppose.

Ah, the eternal question.
Well, the sound is different really - between commercial & non-commercial hardrock/metal. Which is why some music ends up being available to the larger masses, it's appeal is easier to confront but it isn't necessarily the main cup of tea for "real" metalheads (with "real" I mean metalheads who have been around for a long time). I'm not trying to say that commercial music is worse just because it is commercial, the sound is just different. I generally prefer bands which aren't as easily approached, so to speak. It's quite hard to explain. But of course, if I ever come across a commercial band which I find great - I don't mind if it is commercial. Only posers & younger wannabe metalheads do that. As you say, music is always music. Also, one of my favorite bands is Nightwish - which today is rendered a commercial band (though it wasn't when I started listening to them). They are still very good however.
PSJ
Tue, 07-26-2005, 06:54 PM
Commercial bands seem so shallow, i have never truely appreciated a band that is known to be commercial. They tend to make their sound easy to listen to but many times lacking depth. I can't enjoy it for a longer period of time.
That's my opinion on it. I don't know about the rest.
EDIT: Terra said it so much better. What a suprise eh? Maybe i should add that i wouldn't discard a band that i liked just because they are commercial.

Because big shot record companies are brainwashing the masses through the radio stations and the stations are making a lot of money off this bullshit. It's not just all music, the people making the most money are pushing their no talent rap bullshit and fucking lip synching pop music. A real music fan would know how good their music makes them feel, they can appreciate talent, and the finest gems in the whole industry are bands that most people don't even know about, and that obscurity is appreciated because those bands aren't changing their style and playing and writing according to what will get them on MTV.
It's not to say plenty of commercial bands aren't good, but what you hear is typically the music the corporate moguls want you to hear. Enlighten yourself, listen to things from artists who don't make a lot of money because it's pretty obvious money isn't the driving factor for what they do.

Listening to solos more than actual songs doesn't appeal very much to me. Somebody should limit how much solos DT can play in one show. From what i have heard they play to damn much of it.
The other bands i don't know exept Megadeth and Anthrax. I'm really not a big fan of thrash. What does the other bands play?

Fear Factory: Don't recall
Dillinger Escape Plan: Progressive (I think, I might have confused them with some other band... there are so many up and coming american bands now)
Nevermore: Progressive
Life of Agony: No idea
Symphony X: Power/Prog (great band)
Dry Kill Logic & Bobaflex: Sounds like crap and probably is too.
As for me I was at the swedish Metaltown festival today and saw 5 bands - Tiamat, Dark Tranquillity, Sentenced, Apocalyptica and Rammstein.
Suffice to say, I had the time of my life.

The 69 eyes kicks ass, Devils is the name of the latest album.
Sentenced are fucking kings. Their later works are better than their earlier in my opinion. They started out as a death metal band but changed their style to metal-ish depressive hardrock later on.

hahaha i forgot the exact name, so i went and copied the dir name.. and since i thought it was the "Paris kills" album i just assumed that Devils was a part of the group name..
But then again.. "Assumption is the mother of all fuckups"..
And about Sentenced.. That sounds disturbing.. "metal-ish depressive hardrock".. Almost sounds like an disease.. metal-ish depressive hardrock syndrom i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif
well maybe i will download a newer album to find out just how that sounds like..
EDIT: ok we all know i don't have anything else to do anyways, so i got "Sentenced - The.Funeral.Album-Promo-2005-MiNT", "Sentenced-The_Cold_White_Light-Retail-2002-RDA" and "Sentenced-Crimson_(Digipack)-2000-SER"

Ok, KitKat once again needs some advice from the gotwoot metal gurus. I have a couple of songs on my playlist by a band called Masterplan. I'm not quite sure where I got these songs actually, but nonetheless they are there, and I enjoy both of them. Not like OMG I LOVE THIS SONG, but they're good tunes. So, for anyone who happens to be familiar with this band, is it worth my while to download a whole album? Do they have good variety in their range of styles? How would you evaluate them overall?

Indeed.
Okay I just tried Epica. Being a big fan of Nightwish, people have always recommended Epica to me because that band also plays symphonic power metal and has a female soprano. I tried The Phantom Agony (2003) first, and it was a good album. Good enough for me to try their newest release, Consign to Oblivion (2005). WHAT A FUCKING GOOD ALBUM! It's absolutely beautiful, the orchestra blends perfectly with the power metal, and goes directly to the heart. Also, in the song Trois Vierges, Simone (vocalist) does a duet with Roy Khan (from Kamelot). Roy is one of my favorite vocalists so that's totally awesome. I guess he is "repaying" the debt, since Simone sang on "Somewhere in time" (from Kamelot's newest album - The Black Halo). Or maybe she was the one who repaid a debt, because I'm not sure which of the albums that came first. ANYHOW! Check 'em out!
Also, if you are really into symphonic music (like I am) also try their release "The Score - An epic journey". It also came out this year, and it's actually the soundtrack to a new dutch movie called "Joyride". There are almost no vocals on it, and it's definitely not metal, but it's beautiful music. I really recommend that one. As far as I know, it's the first time a metal band does a soundtrack for a movie.

Man, I need to stop not having internet. I disappeared for a long while again exactly because of that. Anyway, first order of business once I got back on was to get some new music. And I did. Leaves Eyes. I cannot believe the size of the smile on my face! These guys are so freaking awesome. I'd imagine Terra and PSJ have at least heard of them, but for anyone else who hasn't, give them a try. I also purchased the latest opeth album. I heard the described on by a dj on wsou as a band that never disappoints, so I tried it out. I'm not disappointed. In fact, I'm flawed, specially on ghost of perdition, the first song on the album. It's damn near flawless metal. Was also able try out nightwish and anorexia nervosa. It doesn't get much prettier than nightwish, but anorexia nervosa....can't quite form an opinion on that yet. They're so fucking loud I can't tell what's happening. But overall and by far I'm enjoying these hidden troves of metal. Soooo much...

But I'm finding it hard to tear myself from the first album to even give the second one a shot, since I just got both of them. Between this and the other things I've mentioned, I have no idea what to listen to first at any given time. Haven't felt like this since 96. I miss it.

Excuse the bump but I have to voice my opinion on several bands, first being Leaves' Eyes. I finally tried them, I have both albums, but Vinland Saga is the only one I've heard so far. What can I say? If I was in a headbanging mode I wouldn't listen to this, but it's some damn beautiful and atmospheric music in which the instruments are excellently used to build up a very convincing landscape of ice and snow. And the concept album is about vikings! Well I don't really know how to add to that, other than it's beautiful music which occasionally makes me want to cry. It's just too bad that all the stupid people in society would say that they sound like Evanescence (just because they also have a female front figure, of course).
Other recommendations:
Led Zeppelin - Not metal, but 70s hard-rock. If there's anyone here who actually doesn't know who these guys are... well, what the fuck are you waiting for? Go get some pieces of history. Amazing drummer too.
Charon - This finnish goth metallic act recently released their new album Songs For Sinners. It's good.
...And Oceans - The ultimate bastard child between black & industrial metal. They sound a bit like Anorexia Nervosa except with more keyboards and techno elements. VERY recommended.
Asian Kung-Fu Generation - Not metal or hard rock actually but some of their songs are in the hard rock area (though normally punk rock). All of you should know these guys already (did 2nd opening for Naruto & 4th for Fullmetal Alchemist). Actually I only write them down here because I'm listening to them right now and I really like it.
I've also listened some more to Crashdiet. These young swedes are gonna hit it big eventually.

If a band is good or not is not determined by how big it is.
Give some examples of bands you like and the recommendations will come pouring down like rain. In the meantime you should listen to some Iron Maiden the best metal act in the world.
Start out with "number of the beast" great album to get you hooked, then you can keep going with "piece of mind" "powerslave" "seventh son of a seventh son" if you still like all of it skip up to "brave new world" and "dance of death" when you have listened through all of this you can just get the remaining albums.

Opeth, definately Opeth. These guys touch on an entire spectrum of metal. When they're brutal, there are few who tougher. When they're melodic, there a few that gentler. Death metal combined with symphonic influence and progressive metal, all with an atmospheric quality, all done with amazing skills. Listen to Opeth. Also, check out Leaves Eyes. There's a review of them on this page made by Terracosmo that'll tell you what they're about in a nutshell. I for one have listening to them damn near non-stop for the three days.
One of my favorite bands that's stood the test of time: Pantera. Yeah they're popular and well known and what not, but you know what, sometimes there's a valid reason for that. This is one of those times. They're skillful, brutal, and all around unequaled in what they do.
Another band that's freaking awesome is Death. In short, its death metal, played with supreme compositional intricacy, wasn't always the case. However, from what I've heard, this band lacks the symphonic influences of some other bands. Which is exactly the reason I like them so much. They get in plenty of beautiful melodies but its done with the electric guitar, and that makes they're sound very edgy.

The 3 subsequent albums (out of which one is a remix album of their very first one) are with their new style, what I'd like to refer to as Techno Metal. Electronic, yet still dark, though not brutal as BM. Very good and catchy band. They also have Jan Axel von Blomberg, aka Hellhammer, as drummer. i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif

Dragonforce's new, being released in Februari 06 is avaible all over the net.
If you enjoy extremly fast power metal this is for you. On this release they have slowed down some parts of the songs which gives them a much heavier sound, they have also added techno beats here and their which fit in really well in my opinion, with this release they really grew as a band from "Sonic Firestorm" which isn't such a good album in my opinion, their debut was alot better.
Best song on thier new release which is titled "Inhuman Rampage" is track #8 which also is the last track, a beautiful ballad with a piano intro and a fantastic piano part in the middle of the song, if you have ever heard Starfire on their debut, this one is along those lines.
Go get this release right now.
While i'm at it i should recommend Loudness to. Japanese traditional heavy metal band, amazing guitar work above all, the singing is also very interesting done in english. Get Thunder in the East, by many called their best release ever.

Just have to get in Tool here. Easily one of the best bands around. If you haven't heard them i suggest you get to it as soon as possible, i.e. right now. They've got such a huge range that it's quite hard to put them in a genre. The singer "Maynard James Keenan" also known from "A Perfect Circle" is in my opinion one of the best singers ever, you have to hear him to understand his incredible depth. I saw them live once on a festival in sweden called hultsfred and I almost wet my self from the shear awesomeness. Their best album so far I think is Aenima but if you are just starting to listen to them I suggest you begin with "La Te Ra Lus" which is their latest album. A Perfect Circle is also very good, they are a little softer and easier to listen to if you find that Tool kicks so much ass that you can't take it.

There seems to always be a 5 year gap between Tool-albums, but it's totally worth the wait. Just hope I won't get a heart-attack from the next album being too great.

Valley of the Damned is by far the best DF album, best songs, and at the time their music felt more fresh. Sure, the following 2 albums have been great, but it's still almost exactly the same formula. As for Tool I have Lateralus but didn't like it very much. :S Maybe I need to listen to it more.

Yes, you do need to listen to it more, much much more. I woundn't go as far as to say that Tool is for everyone, but most people start liking it after listening trough one record a couple of times. It's totally worth it. I have been listening to Lateralus on a regular basis since it was released. I just rotate it with the other records and A Perfect Circle, for neverending fun. This one of the big reasons why I almost never by any new records.
If you like Led Zeppelin, Tool has made a cover of "No Quarter" on their live-album "Salival". It's one of the best covers ever made, and it's one of my favourite songs. I really suggest listening to this song, for it will blow your mind.

LOL!! Hey! Leave DT alone! I swear I'll have them come play a solo at your house too. At 30 minutes per solo per instrument, you'd better take heed.
If you're looking into Tool, I think a better introduction to tool would be the album Aenima. Many of the songs on that Album are indicative of what they've done in the past as well as of what they're likely to do in the future. Its also my favorite album from them. Lateralus is a rather difficult listen, but if you like aenima, Lateralus will most likely grow on you. If you don't, then you probably shouldn't bother.

About Nightwish, Tarja (vocalist) got kicked out. People cry and believe that the band is done because she was the front figure. Nobody cares that Tuomas (keyboardist) is actually the one who writes the songs. Cool, get their debut. They don't have the same amount of insane keyboards in the firts two. The newest release got some really weird keyboards at times, i like them but some people don't have the same easy going attitude with keyboards and shit.

Just picked up an album called "Vermin" by a band called "Old Man's Child" It sounds a lot like anorexia nervosa, but I can 'hear' it more easily. Apparently the guitarist and song writer in this band came from another one called Dimmu Borgir. I've heard anorexia nervosa being compared to them, so I know that they're supposedly one of the original bands to make what I guess is symphonic death metal.
That being said, this album is just great! I heard the song "enslaved and condemned" on music choice, and immediately went out to the virgin megastore to buy this album. I could not imagine disliking the album based on the strenght of that one song, and yet again i was right. Metal NEVER fails!! (I hope..) The music seems pretty standard stuff. Hard death metal riffs, complex arrangements, growls, blazing drums. So if you're looking for something innovative, I suppose this isn't the place to look. However, all that they do, they do spectacularly. So, if you don't mind adding another solid record to your collection, this is the record. Nothing new, but fucking awesome! Everyone should listen to this, so, go and listen to this!

Old Man's Child is a pretty nice band which sounds a lot like Dimmu for reasons that you have already explained. I haven't heard Vermin yet, but seeing as it has gotten good reviews all over - I'm thinking I'll give it a shot. It's also pretty funny how you know about Anorexia Nervosa, and not Dimmu Borgir (since the latter is so much more famous). But that's just good because Anorexia is sooooo much better!

Cryhavoc: finnish melodic death metal, were pretty famous a few years ago, released two albums ("Sweetbriers" of 1998 & "Pitch-Black Blues" of 1999). I only heard Sweetbriers so far but it's a good band which sounds a bit like Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Kalmah and that ilk. Yeah, check 'em out if you like that kind of music. Catchy and nice.

That new Maiden is pretty ininteresting, Edward the Great was better. If i would buy a Maiden compilation album right now it would be "Death on the Road" Seems much more interesting. I'm waiting for their winter 06-07 release, that should be some good shit. If it is on par with Dance of Death i would call this new Bruce era the best yet. Brave New World and Dance of Death followeb by something of the same caliber would be awesome.

I dunno if Imentioned this but The Project Hate MCMXCIX are like the greatest melodic death metal ever so you should definitely check them out. I'm listening to their new album, Armageddon March Eternal [Symphony of Slit Wrists] but it would be best to find their self-titled, it's catchier. Anything Sweden shits out is gold.

Title explanations:
Saffle is a swedish village which we enjoy to make fun of over here, and polkagrisar is a type of swedish candy. The titles of the songs (hell, even the name of the band) are intentionally overdramatic and therefore also funny. Each song is about 2 minutes long, and the line-up consists of the infamous Andie Brando (me) on drums, and Benny the Supreme on electric guitar. The songs were recorded in an abandoned shack in the woods (not really) using state of the art equipment (definitely not really).
I prefer "Prelude", it has a better drum passage (IMO) and some atmospheric background shrieks courtesy of yours truly. "Silent Screams" has a better intro though. Most people seem to prefer that one.
The songs were originally made out of improvisation but we liked how they turned out. Oh and turn down the volume i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif

Low down the volume? Why must you speak such heresy? Hey, not bad man, however, yeah, high tech equipment...sounds like you're using a 15 watt amp for the guitar. Dang lack of cash. Make a hit record, get rich, to get better equipment, to make hit records :-D. You plan on pursuing the drums seriously? That'd be fucking awesome. I play guitar myself but unfortunately I can't record anything to show you how amazing I am (in my dreams).

Uchiha Barles
Sun, 11-20-2005, 04:38 PM
Oh, well, heres a suggestion. Look online, and find a guitar that has the hardware you want and is aesthetically pleasing to you. In fact, find a few. According to the "what do you do on the internet" thread, you have time for this. However, I don't recommend buying it online though. This may be the harder part in finding time. Call up a local guitar shop, preferably a large chain shop, and see if they have the models you're interested in. Stop by the shop and play them. it could be something you do for fun on the weekend. I'm always out at a guitar shop or another trying out guitars I can't afford but want one day, so I already have a list of things I plan on getting. Bring some friends, raise some hell, its a good time imo. I don't know if they have a presence in Sweeden, but Guitar Center and Sam Ash generally have the things I'm interested in. Small shops are more useful if you're looking to haggle and find a bargain on new models, or are looking for old or discontinued models.

Sun, 11-20-2005, 07:36 PM
Yeah that amp for the guitar is hilariously bad, and part of the reason to why the sound sucks (there's that constant humming in the background). The other part is, as PSJ already pointed out, the fact that we used an MP3 player. i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif And yeah I plan to pursue the drums, I haven't been taking any courses so far but I've learned in other ways and I feel like I'm home behind the kit. But we'll see what happens, recording music using my own skill has been a dream for a long time so this was a rich experience. i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif
