Man I am SOOO happy, this is the new Mago de Oz release - and they are one of my favorite bands ever. However, despite the popularity this heavy/folk metal band has in their home country Spain, they aren't very famous outside of there. I've literally been sitting day out and day in lately in an attempt to find this online, to buy or to download, and then I find it at Piratebay (irony at it's best). AWESOME!!!

Downloading it now, I already heard the intro and it was enough to make me cry. I love this band so much!

Holy shit Terra..... I love it, amazing. Listening to it right now. God damn, absolutely incredible. This is the first time EVER that I didn't just skip from song to song to get an idea of what it sounded like first. I have listened to every song so far, in their entirety.

But not enough!

Best album of the year, no question.

Hmm, i might give it a listen, i didn't like Mezmerize very much. They had some good passages here and there but blew it with insane tempo changes all the time.

Some recommendations?

Right now Get Mago De Oz new album(Terra has been advertizing this for a while now). You should also try Loudness and X Japan, both heavy metal bands from Japan. Try out Airged L'amh, it's Heavy Metal with folk metal influenses. There is also Rammstiens newest, which i enjoyed very much. Older fans didn't like it that much but i loved some songs on there. Since i'm recommending i feel that it is my duty to recommend Iron Maiden even though you probably already know them. Get Brave New World and Dance Of Death.

Btw... Krisiun are on tour.. God I hope they come here.

Hypnotize wasn't very good. I guess I'll never understand why people like SoaD...

Krisiun isn't among my favorite bands, but they are pretty decent.

Song of the moment: Hammerfall - Glory to the Brave

"Nothing on earth stays forever
but none of your deeds were in vain."

Fucking beautiful.

Also, I've located a torrent for the new Mago de Oz live album. Some of you seem to share my love for the band so this might be interesting. It's rather big, 150 megs, but great quality and 2 CDs. A great live band they are. Hilariously, they also have a live cover of the aforementioned Hammerfall song on there. Destiny or what? It's called El Peso del Alma there though, as they even went and translated the lyrics to spanish.

I was wondering. has anyone listened to Roadrunner United, the all star sessions?

it's a cooperation from 42 bands under the label Roadrunner. A few names are Opeth, Fear Factory, Trivium, Sepultura, Misfits, Killswitch Engage, Cradle of Filth and Ill Nino.
There are a few good songs on the album IMO.

I heard about the United Sessions, I almost got it but I dunno. But I do like posting over at their forums, Blabbermouth.net, great fun.

I'm downloading the new In Flames, Come Clarity now, we'll see how it goes.

The song for you kiddies for the day is Entombed - Chief Rebel Angel and I for an Eye

Terra, and anyone else.. did you ever check out Babylon Whores?

Oh and the new Exodus, Shovel Headed Kill Machine, is a sick ass album.

Thanks for reminding me Azazel, I was meaning to check out Babylon Whores but I forgot. Downloading some stuff now.

New In Flames out already eh? I don't know if I dare to download it :S
But then again, it can't get worse than STYE so what the hell.

Edit: Just noticed that Babylon Whores has Taneli Jarva (ex-Sentenced) on backing vocals i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif awesome! Can't wait for the downloads to finish...

Edit2: New In Flames = hilariously bad album. Perhaps even worse than Soundtrack. Avoid this shit.

Babylon Whores = sounds pretty nice so far. Gonna let them sink in. i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif

Awesome band time: Katatonia

They have played for a long time, a swedish band which started out as a death metal band but later evolved into some kind of depressive heavy metal. A good comparison would be Sentenced. Very nice band, great lyrics too, but don't listen to them unless you like gloomy stuff. Their albums really makes me depressed (in a good way). The best ones would be "Last Fair Deal Gone Down", "Discouraged Ones" & "Viva Emptiness".

The Heretic Azazel

Teargas is an awesome song, but the vocals tend to wear me down a bit, they get monotonous after a while.

I didn't care much for Viva EMptiness, moreso Soul's Highway and Last Fair Deal Gone Down

They played some damn fine death metal back in the day too.

Terracosmo
Sun, 12-04-2005, 11:40 AM
Teargas is beautiful. And yes, their death metal stuff ain't bad. For some reason I was reminded of old In Flames when I heard "Dance of December Souls" and decided to take "Lunar Strain" for a spin.
Awesome album it is.

Anyway, Katatonia didn't make Soul's Highway - Beseech did i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif

Good call on Katatonia. Ive been listening to them quite a bit thanks to pandora. I've also discovered Elis and Dragonforce. "Black Angel" and "Evening Star" are tracks from those bands that are really good. Somehow I doubt I'm enlightning many people in this thread though...

Never liked Entombed.

RECOMMENDATION: Listen to Deathstars NOW. Awesome band which hails from Sweden, the guitarist (Emil Nodtveidt) is the younger brother of the singer from Dissection (Jon Nodtveidt). They play some kind of industrial metal. A very good comparison would be The Kovenant. If you are even a small fan of electronica in your metal, then get their albums NOW. The newest one, Termination Bliss, is to be released 2006 but is already out on the net. (http://thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3415716) So get it.

Their first album (they only made two so far), Synthetic Generation, is also awesome. (http://thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3357620)

I'm liking Deathstars so far. I think the only song that really got me was "Tounges". It reminds me a lot of Rammstein. I don't listen to a whole lot of metal, so that's the only good comparison I can draw, but it's composition reminds me of about 3 Rammstein songs all in one.

Also, the cover of Termination Bliss made me laugh.

Started to listen to Evergrey today. Pretty well known band but i can't remember them showing up here so i thought i'd give a shout out.

Got their 2003 release(i think) Recreation Day and it sounds very good. The first time i heard this record back a year ago i wasn't impressed at all, in fact i didn't like it but now that i have broadened my music taste i find them very good.

Give them a listen!

Wow, can't believe it's been a year already.

I do think it's pretty lame to sue the club though. That's not gonna solve anything.
But as you say, security needs to be heightened overall. But that's not just this particular club's fault.

PSJ
Thu, 12-08-2005, 04:24 PM
It is their fault however that he got shot since they didn't have enough security, it can serve as a warning for every other club if they do have to pay.

Katatonia, i think Terra has recommended them already but they are fucking awesome. You better try Viva Emptiness, their 2003 release NOW!

I glance through the first page, and it fills me with considerable sadness. Linkin Park and Disturbed being called metal? Ugh.

BUT THEN TERRA MENTIONS DRAGONFORCE.

My god they're awesome... Here are a few bands I like...

I love Maiden. I guess I like Dickinson the best, but then again, most of the Maiden songs are with Dickinson. Killers and Prowler are both fantastic albums, and ... umm... Well Futureal was a awesome song. Blaze Bayley is just meh. His vocals didn't match with the feel of Iron Maiden, if that makes any sense. Then again, I'm not a big fan of deep, nonraspy vocals (like Iced Earth or Nevermore.)

Edit: Wait a minute, Prowler isn't an album... What the hell was I thinking? I meant Iron Maiden.

This was one of the greatest tragedies to strike the world of rock n' roll. Ever. Every time I think about it I get pissed off and heart-broken. I like that the family took time to consider whether or not suing the club was the right way to go. This is being done with as clear a head as its going to get. They don't need the money, so the fight must be to get a point across. I support them in this. I never want to see something like this happen to one of my favorite artist ever again. I actually burst into tears at the computer lab in school when I signed onto aim to speak to some friends. Aim today is how I first heard about this. Dec. 8th is also my birthday, so you can imagine, if there was anything good going for it that day, or if anything good was to happen later, it wasn't good anymore. Darrell Abbott, you and your music will forever be missed. RIP \m/

I agree with you fully. Bruce is what people think Maiden is, he is the singer that fits Maiden the best. Blaze is the worst in my opinion as they have a Bruce friendly sound on the Blaze albums and Blaze just can't do it like Bruce can. The first 2 albums works because they are heavier and raw-er than what Maiden became when Bruce joined.

So what Ablum do you like the best? For me it's Dance of Death. I love the new stuff.

I might have to go with Brave New World or Powerslave. Brave New World has so many awesome songs, like the Wicker Man. That's probably one of my favorite Maiden songs. You're right that really just is a few. I've found 51 Maiden covers, currently downloading on DC so i'll update this post everytime i get a new one down.

Here goes the list and rating of the song.

Dark Tranquility - 22 Acacia Avenue
Rating: 3 / 5
Comment: Works suprinsingly well as a death metal song, this one i can stick into a Maiden cover album.

Graveworm - Fear of the Dark
Rating: 2 / 5
Comment: I absolutly despise the vocals in this cover, it just doesn't fit this song. There are high points to though, the violins are extremly good and diffrent. Put somewhat clean lyrics in this cover and it would be heaps better.

Children of Bodom - Aces High
Rating: 3 / 5
Comment: Again, the vocals are what's dragging this down, the song works well musicly for this band, they upped the tempo a bit but the vocals just doesn't fit, again clean vocals and this one would be amazing.

Avalanch - Run to the Hills
Rating: 1.5 / 5
Comment: Well this is just bad. The tempo is screwed up and the singer doesn't do a very good job on the song, sounds as if the band tried to go with a rockish approach, didn't work at all.

Cradle of Filth - Hallowed be thy Name
Rating: 0 / 5
Comment: These guys shouldn't be allowed to cover any song at all, let them do their own shit so they don't ruin anyone elses work.

Sonata Arctica - Die with your Boots on
Rating: 4 / 5
Comment: Finally found a cover that works well. I would let these guys cover more Maiden songs.

Sentenced - The Trooper
Rating: 1.5 / 5
Comment: Well this was decent at the very best, it had some good guitar passages but other than that it wasn't very good.

In Flames - Murders in the Rue Morgue
Rating: 3.5 / 5
Comment: Works well just like Dark Tranquility's cover. These older Maiden songs seem to work better with growling vocals, it blends better with the rougher sound the older songs had. This i can see myself listen to again.

Ethereal - Fear of the Dark
Rating: 4.5/ 5
Comment: This was absolutly beautiful!! There is hope for correctly done Maiden covers. This song features a beautiful womans voice doing the intro and the choruses while a growling vocalist does the verses, there is also a growling vocalist with a deeper growl doing backup vocals through the entire song.

Musicly they use fluets(sp?), violins, bells. Yea the whole package, this is the best cover yet. Let's see if anyone can top this one. I warmly recommend this one to all of you and especially to Terra and Heretic, i think you boys will like this one.

Eternal Tears of Sorrow - Flight of Icarus
Rating: 4 / 5
Comment: Again a very good cover, they are piling up now it seems. Features good music passaged and just is done in the right way. I would have rated this 3-3.5 if it wasn't for the amazing solo at the end, it was really amazing.

Therion - Children of the Damned
Rating: 1 / 5
Comment: Okay now this one is close to the original but the vocals are aboslute shit, i am not familiar with Therion but i really hope they aren't a band o clean vocals normally, if they are i strongly suggest that they just call it quits. It just pains me to listen to his attempts at singing.

Burden of Grief - Prowler
Rating: 4 / 5
Comment: Amazingly good vocals, they are growling vocals and it works better than on the In Flames cover. This doesn't feel to far away from Paul's singing on this track actually which is kinda weird.

Armageddon - Die with your Boots on
Rating: 4.5 / 5
Comment: This works pretty well to. Yet again a growling song but it fits pretty good with this particular song, it gives it feeling, a feeling the original really doesn't have in my opinion. The original is just a mediocre Maiden piece while this cover is a gem among all the other shit covers.

Primal Fear - 2 Minutes to Midnight
Rating: 4 / 5
Comment: First i almost mistook this for the original. This one is rated so high becuase they keeps true to the original but gives it a special feel, it's hard to point out because it is so subtle but i like it alot.

Tierra Santa - Flight of Icarus
Rating: 4.5 / 5
Comment: This is amazing really. They don't stay trueto the original at all, they innovate as much as they can if they want to call it a cover. This cover is really interesting and shows how much you can do with a song without destroying it, why didn't i stumble upon peices like this one when i found shitholes like Cradle of Filths cover?

Opeth - Remember Tomorrow
Rating: 3 / 5
Comment: Well yet another song that is less than an inch form the original, this one however isn't as good as the Primal Fear cover for some unexplainable reason.

Black Abyss - The Trooper
Rating: 0.5 / 5
Comment: When the vocals kicked in in this one it literally sent a chill down my spine, that's how bad it was. There are 2 or 3 people singing, i can't really grasp it as they all suck terribly. One is trying to sound like Bruce and one isn't capabel of striking a clean note, his voice just disappears.

Vital Remains - The Trooper
Rating: 0 / 5
Comment: This is shit, do not get this one. Trust me. It seems that no one is able of doing a decent The Trooper cover.

Darkane - Powerslave
Rating: 4 / 5
Comment: Again i found a good cover, this cover is done a bit rougher with heavier riffs and vocals. This sounds like it could easily be a song made by this band.

The Storyteller - Moonchild
Rating: 3 / 5
Comment: This song doesn't offer alot of new twists and turns, it's basicly just a bit more melodic than the original, it's a good song, just not very interesting.

Iron Savior - Running Free
Rating: 4 / 5
Comment: Very interesting version of this song, close to the original but production and vocals are heaps better, if Maiden did their first 2 like this they would be even bigger classics.

Grave Digger - Running Free
Rating: 3 / 5
Comment: This is a notch lower than Iron Saviors version of this song. Good song, the vocals remind me of Motörhead but hearing this right after Iron Savior's version clearly shows that it just don't cut it.

Delusion - 22 Acacia Avenue
Rating: 3.5 / 5
Comment: This song is very close to the original, not in any way a bad cover but it justdoesn't offer anything diffrent. The singer even sounds like Bruce.

There are more than half of them left so don't worry you'll find close to any cover you have ever heard about.

I'm curious on what you have to say about Mago de Oz's cover on Strange World, as I haven't heard it yet. Actually, I haven't even heard the original. i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif

I just listened to Nocturnal Rites' version of Wasted Years (my favorite Maiden song), and I'll have to say that the original was much better. The cover felt sloppy, I don't really know how to describe it...

Oh HEEEEEEEEEEELL no! The sacred metal thread must remain unblemished! In an attempt to veer this thread back to its sublime purpose, anyone have any recommendations for metal bands in the vein of industrial metal? I'm a big nine inch nails fan, and would like something a lot more "metallic" with the same dark feel and loudness, and electronic influences. I'm already very familiar with Rammstein.

A couple of Bands I heard on Pandora that are worth a shot are Ayreon and Agathodaimon. Ayreon's latest album features Dream Theater's James Labrie on vocals, and often times, he sounds better on that record than he does with his original band.

Did you try Deathstars? You'll love them. I think you'll also like KMFDM, and certain works by Ministry.

Ayreon is so-so. I'm not really into progressive metal at all. Agathodaimon I'm not too familiar with i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif

Yep, I buy CDs all the time. Everytime I go out to purchase music, I buy at least one CD of music I downloaded. If I'm getting 4 CDs or more, I try to make it so that half of what I'm purchasing is music I've already downloaded. When I get a real job, I'll make sure to quickly own a copy of all the CDs I have on my harddrive. Sure its because I want to support the artist, and not be a thief, but its mostly because the CDs are shiny and in pretty packages. And I like to show them off.

I wouldn't categorize industrial as metal either. i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif We're both stretching the definition here.

Terracosmo
Thu, 12-22-2005, 05:46 AM
Well that depends a little, industrial in itself isn't actually a music genre but rather a definition of certain elements found in a song. I read an awesome essay about that once, I will try to find it again. Bottom-line is that today, what people think of when one says "industrial metal" is simply metal with electronic elements. Laibach is electronic, but they don't have solos or any other metal elements really, unlike Rammstein (which also doesn't have many solos, but nontheless is a metal band). Then again, categorizing within metal is one hell of a chore, and according to the wiseasses at www.metal-archives.com, anything with keyboards in it is false metal i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif

Edit: On a separate note, does anyone know why Tool suddenly released two DVD singles from their 2001 album? Really weird business trick...

I mostly download but i do buy cds to. I have a hard time finding bands i like, i live in a rather small town and there aren't any good metal record stores here. I can't buy online since i don't have a credit card and no one wants to help me with that stuff. Lastly i get a little over a 100 bucks a month. I spend most of it on entertainment with friends and beer, there simply isn't enough left to buy records. Sure i can buy one or two once in a while but not more.

On a entirely diffrent note.

Terra, how many black metal church burnings have you had in your neighborhood this year?

I live in Arkansas so not many for me!

Terracosmo

Not as many as one might expect, though it's mostly in Norway that stuff happens. :S
That actually merits some research. Like, how much the general burning of churches has changed compared to when Mayhem were active.

New metal recommendations:

Kalmah - The Black Waltz
- Newest album from Kalmah, their heaviest one yet. Melodic death metal from Finland, with a lovable keyboard to back it up.

Elvenking - The Winter Wake
- The new offering from the italian folk/power metal combo. Pretty nice, though not as good as Heathenreel.

Moonsorrow - ALL ALBUMS
- God I love this band. I know I've said it before, but they are so FUCKING AWESOME. Epic, folky, heavy, melodic, extreme... it all mingles, it all rocks so much that it makes me want to cry. And dance!

Yeah, I've been waiting quite *patiently* for this record. Tool seems to have no problems making us wait massive amounts of time for new records, but hey, I'm never dissappointed, and still not bored by any of they're records. This band rules. By the way, I remember reading an interview where Danny said that the record was heavily influenced by Meshuggah because of the tour they did together. This should mean something significantly louder and heavier than previous releases, maybe even hearing Maynard yell a lot more than in the last two records. Anyone else as excited about this as I am?

Wow, I saw them on that tour. I'd have never thought that they were influenced by them. I love listening to maynard hold out those long ass yells. What do you guys mean by rehashed?

I didn't think it would be possible, but Tool have actually evolved even more. The music is insanely well made. Some parts feel like they are playing backwards.

EDIT: Listened to it some more and now it's really grown on me. One thing that striked me is that the lyrics are more concrete, whereas on Lateralus they are really spiritual and abstact.

It didn't exactly sound rehashed, just a little similar to a couple songs on Lateralus put together. I still absolutely love the song though. I love the way Maynard sings on the song and I agree with what you said about the lyrics being more concrete. It's definately got me more impatient than I already was to buy this album. I ripped the song from the video to mp3 and left it on repeat all night, and boy was it nice to wake up to Maynard chanting "Why don't we just admit it" followed by Danny's beautiful drumming!

Altough Maynard is miles beyond every other vocalist ever, I feel like he isn't using his full power in this song. It seems like he has taken alot of inspiration from his projects with A Perfect Circle. Some sections of the song actually really remind me of Schism from Lateralus, but I doesn't sound like they have reused anyrthing.

I've never been able to wait for an actual release when I can download first.

With Tool it isn't a matter of fearing a bad quality albumthough, like with a lot of others, it's that it naturally has to be so great that my impatience kicks in and I have to hear it.

I'm withholding full judgment, I've only listened to it once, but it's musically brilliant, and VERY diverse.

The Pot is the funniest shit I've ever heard and heavy and awesome at the same time.

I did the smart thing and smoked up before going into the album.

Holy shit Wings for Marie(both parts, part two is 10,000 days) is so incredible. I am still listening to it so I'll edit this post with further opinions.

And here's the tally thus far

Jambi kicks major ass.
The Pot is hilarious as Heretic stated and sounds wicked. Including Maynard's rather high pitched intro verse.
Lost Keys & Rosetta Stoned is also brilliant. Does anyone know who is saying the distorted lines in Rosetta Stoned?

On the subject of Tool, how many people downloaded the fake albums (one with nothing but silence, and one with some other band singing weird songs)? Hahaha...

Anyways... the new Tool sounds awesome. I have to admit that Vicarious seems like a revamped Schism... it just has that feel that I got when I first heard Schism. The rest of the album is great as expected... but, as with all other Tool songs, it has to grow on you. I've listened through it twice now, and on the second go through, I appreciated it more than the first time.

May 2nd isn't that far away now...

In my experienced, it takes about three full runs of a Tool album to get you stuck for life. This usually doesn't differ if you are a Tool junkie or just started listening to them. The difference lies in that the junkie will let the album run enough times, whilst the newbies head will explode from the sheer awesomeness. It's true, I've seen it happen.

I have to admit, my favourite "metal" or "hxc" or "rock" bands in general are mostly local bands around where I live. That's most of the stuff I listen to. I mean, sure I listen to Tool (which is my all-time favourite band), and Evergreen Terrace, and Bullet for My Valentine, And Hopesfall (the older), and Bleeding Through, and Atreyu, and bands like that.... but most of what I listen to are local bands: MSD, Incursion, Antikythera, (intheclear), Five Bolt Main (which contains members of Flaw), 7DaySun, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, A Present Day Nightmare, Straight Line Stitch, Arcane Saint, PUC.... and I can name a lot more.

Anyways... while much "mainstream" metal is definitely worth listening to, I find local music fresher... 'cause there's really no boundaries. And band members treat their fans as equal; you can chat away with any of the band members at a show or online or even at their place of employment (yes, they have other jobs). So, while the rewards aren't as plentiful as "making it big", the lifestyle is much more appreciable.

I'm completely lost on what I'm saying now, so I'm just gonna shut up... haha...

Terracosmo

I hate local bands. I'm going to be honest and tell you why. I AM FUCKING JEALOUS. Every time I see some "regular guy" standing on the stage, I get pissed off. So until I actually have my own breakthrough, I will never be able to appreciate local music acts. They are too close. I can't take it. Fuck them.

Ehrm, anyway, did I mention that the new Eternal Tears of Sorrow album is out?
I've waited sooooo long for it... it's called Before the Bleeding Sun and I recommend it to all fans of melodic death metal with lots of keyboards.

I enjoy Ghost's playlist, out of which I like all the bands except Sevendust, simply because I haven't heard them.

Entwine is wonderful music. I've cried to "Closer (My Love)" & "Safe in a Dream" many times.

Oh and I've given Tool MANY chances now, and I... just don't get it. The music fucking blows and is so incredibly boring that I want to kill myself. It doesn't matter that Danny is one of the best drummers I've ever heard, nor does it matter how complex it is, I just don't get it. It SUCKS.

I, too, am not a big fan of Tool. I tried listening to their songs for a while but just couldn't get into them.

I'm digging KaGe's music choices though. CoB has been a favorite of mine since... geeze, Hatebreeder I think, and Sevendust is up there on my list of favorites as well.

As for the slayer concert I mentioned earlier (which will feature CoB too)... ugh... I'm not sure if I'm going. Might just hit up the Sounds of the Underground tour, but even that's looking bleak now since none of my friends can afford to go.

Silent Civilian - Just started listening to them
In Flames
Dragonforce - Gotta have some power metal

And now for a theme-based post. You might have heard me mention this band before, but now, once and forever, I am going to make you listen to them and fucking realize that it's one of the best extreme metal bands ever to have existed. Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you,

Eternal Tears of Sorrow

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v478/joshuajerand/etos4.jpg

Eternal Tears of what?

The band's current line-up is Petri Sankala (drums), Altti Veteläinen (vocals, bass), Jarmo Puolakanaho (guitar), Risto Ruuth (lead guitar) & Janne Tolsa (keyboards). From the band's original line-up, only few remain since their years as a band has been pretty stormy. Several former members of the band can today be found in Kalmah (another excellent melodic death metal band). As some of you might realize upon seeing their names, they hail from Finland. Ever since the group came into being back in 1991, they have been popular. The first few years as a successful underground band, until finally landing a record deal and releasing the now classic "Sinner's Serenade" in 1997.

Their true status as future legends weren't established until their sophomore effort however. 1998's "Vilda Mannu" is one of the most influential records in finnish extreme metal. Have you ever heard Children of Bodom? You probably have. Do you think their usage of keyboards is unique? Eternal Tears of Sorrow was first. Even though CoB debuted in 1997 as well, they already had EToS as a big source of inspiration. I dare say that EToS was the band which truly pioneered the usage of whole keyboard structures within the finnish metal music scene. A song from "Vilda Mannu" called "Burning Flames Embrace" was also released on a split single together with a song called "Sacrament of Wilderness" by a then-unknown band named Nightwish. The rest is history, right?

With every record, the EToS cult grew. They abandoned some of their extreme tendencies with their third album, "Chaotic Beauty" which was released in 2000. It is widely accepted as their best album though it is in fact not my favorite. It contains such classics as "Autumn's Grief", "Tar of Chaos", "Bhean Sidhe", "Shattered Soul" and the Edge of Sanity cover "Black Tears". Ending the disc is another cover, "Flight of Icarus" (originally by Iron Maiden of course). With this album they finally perfected their style, without flaw blending beautiful keyboard arrangements with a symphonic touch, along with the heavy and brutal drums & guitar playing - and the aggressive vocals of Altti Veteläinen.

Now more popular than ever, they released their fourth album - "A Virgin and a Whore" in 2001. This record is one of my 5 favorite albums of all time. I cannot even begin to tell you how fucking great it is. It is beautiful, brutal, tender and unforgiving all at the same time. Every song on it is flawless, from the amazing opener "Aurora Borealis" (I dare you to listen to this song and not instantly turn into a fan), to the PERFECT ballad that is "The River Flows Frozen" (one of my favorite songs ever). If you people only knew how much this song means to me. Every time I feel sad I turn it on, and I become one with it, because the sadness in this song is equal to none. I played it when I got dumped by my second girlfriend whom I loved deeply, and our deal was forever sealed. It's me and Eternal Tears of Sorrow. It's me in The River Flows Frozen. And it's indeed a river which will always run cold. I adore it beyond words.

Other awesome songs include the single "The Last One For Life" (awesome usage of keyboards as usual) and the popular "Aeon", "Prophetian" & "Fall of Man". Also present are two covers, "Sick, Dirty and Mean" (originally by Accept) & "As I Die" (originally by Paradise Lost).

After this, things turned silent in the EToS camp, deadly silent. They decided to take a break. Their enormous fanbase were of course saddened, but they promised to return. In mid-2005 the new line-up finally emerged after years of absolutely nothing, and early 2006 they finally released their fifth album "Before the Bleeding Sun". They prove once again that they are without equal when it comes to mixing beauty and pain in their music, and I hope that they will stay around and provide us with awesome music until the end of time.

Awesome, but what do they sound like?

As I wrote above, they play extreme music with keyboard as a primary force. It has been described as "Symphonic Death Metal", "Melodic Death Metal", "Symphonic Extreme Power Metal" and so on. You probably get the point. We have a lot of double-bass playing on the drums, twin guitars producing a brutal sound and growling vocals - but always with the keyboard being the focus. Fans of Children of Bodom, Norther, Kalmah and so on will adore this band - and so will the rest of you unless you suck horribly.

Discography and mini-reviews

These are my ratings on all of EToS' albums and therefore not necessarily the general opinion. So don't listen to me TOO religiously...

1997 - Sinner's Serenade

The first album was very raw (as is custom with debut albums in this genre). The keyboards are still there, but not as present as they will be later on in their career. It stands the test of time and is charming, but not recommended as the first album to try. It will best please the ones among you who prefer brutal music over melodic dito.

5 best songs: "Another One Falls Asleep", "Dirge", "Into the Deepest Waters", "Bard's Burial", "The Son of the Forest".

Rating: 2.5/5

1998 - Vilda Mannu

A big improvement over the first album and more melodic as well. Here is where it is evident where the sound is going. The musicianship of the group has increased, and they also play better together. This album is considered to be very influential by many extreme metal groups.

5 best songs: "Northern Doom", "Burning Flames Embrace", "Scars of Wisdom", "Vilda Mannu", "Coronach".

Rating: 3.5/5

2000 - Chaotic Beauty

An awesome album which once and for all manifests the EToS sound. Not as extreme as the previous efforts, but much better in all aspects. Wonderful melodies and so much passion that it's almost frightening. A landmark which is considered EToS' best album by the majority.

5 best songs: "Blood of Faith Stains My Hands", "Autumn's Grief", "Bride of the Crimson Sea", "Black Tears", "Tar of Chaos".

Rating: 4.5/5

2001 - A Virgin and a Whore

One of the best albums ever made and obviously my favorite. Everything on this record is absolutely flawless, and if you don't think so too you deserve to die. Fucking perfection.

5 best songs: All of them, but with "The River Flows Frozen" receiving an honorary mention because it means so much to me.

Rating: 5/5

2006 - Before the Bleeding Sun

The "come-back". Not as strong as "Chaotic Beauty" and "A Virgin and a Whore", but a bloody awesome record nontheless. It's actually even more symphonic than before, and with "Angelheart, Ravenheart", they attempt their first "epic" track, clocking in at 8:40. The album also includes a track with a japanese name - "Sakura no Rei". Pretty interesting. It's an instrumental though, so don't expect any japanese growling...

5 best songs: "Sweet Lilith of My Dreams", "Another Me", "Upon the Moors", "Tar Still Flows", "Angelheart, Ravenheart".

Rating: 4/5

10 Best Songs

A hard list to compile, but I'll try.

1. The River Flows Frozen
2. The Last One For Life
3. Aurora Borealis
4. Autumn's Grief
5. Sweet Lilith of My Dreams
6. Prophetian
7. Black Tears
8. Angelheart, Ravenheart
9. Blood of Faith Stains My Hands
10. Burning Flames Embrace

And to finish it off...

Goddamn that was a lot to write SO GET TO LISTENING ALREADY.

May the tears of sorrow flow eternally!

Also, I'm going to state that I was WRONG about DéspairsRay's debut album Coll;Set. When I reviewed it several pages ago (in fact I think it was almost a year ago) I said that they had lost their heavy edge and sense of melody, but I've recently given the disc a few more spins and I don't know what I was smoking. It's an awesome album, full of heavy metal greatness and broken english. Get it!

@Terra: Dang! You found my weak spot.

Ok, listened to At the gates album Slaughter of the soul a while ago and it is some pretty good shit. I really liked the (don't know how to describe it) choppy musical parts. It almost sounds a little off beat (but isn't) or backwards or something.

I have also been listening to Slayer's God hates us all. Bloodline is awesome. I love the drum beat on Cast down. Of course Diciple is some upper echelon shit.

"I got my own philosophy

Well, I decided to give Eternal Tears Of Sorrow a spin and subsequently obtained everything I could and then promptly devoured it. I must say that I really do enjoy their music and that it in my opinion succeeds most bands out there by far. It's gentle yet suitably epic. Autumn's Grief is without a doubt my favorite tune of theirs. Aurora Borealis comes close.

... However, I've never been a fan of screamo vocalists and this one... well, he isn't even that good at screaming. As Genma noted earlier in the thread, it sounded weak. So yeah, the vocalist pretty much ruined the experience for me. It's kind of like putting a naked Brian Peppers in a field of the most precious flowers known to man.

As a side note I'd like to recommend Luca Turilli's DreamQuest's first album Lost Horizons. I just got my grubby hands on this ( long overdue, I admit ) and its beauty is limitless. I am awed and enamored. Acquire it or suffer eternal ignoranance.

I personally think that the "weak" growls of the vocalist in EtoS fits well with the music. An extremely strong growling style (such as the one used in death metal bands such as Cannibal Corpse) would not have the same effect. But yeah, acquired taste might be it.

Other than that, I expected no less than Nai liking the music. ^^

Holy Satan, I was just fucking around

Anyway I did make suggestions. And no one bothered trying! Terra may have seniority but I am SO TOTALLY more metal than him

Looks like the new Samael album is being recorded, check out The Cross, my fave song from them.

Samael is cool. But I could have sworn that your favorite song would be from their black metal period. The Cross is nice though, as is most of their electromaterial. I didn't like old Samael however.

Other metal news,

Rhapsody changes name to Rhapsody of Fire and becomes even more gay. Their new album has leaked, I haven't listened to it yet but for those who are interested; get to it.

The new Blind Guardian album "A Twist in the Myth" has also leaked. I am not normally a big fan of this group despite their vast popularity, but the new album fucking kicks ass! Especially the single, "Fly". GET IT!

Whoa, I was blindsided by the news of a new Maiden album, I'd no idea it was almost done..The single, Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg, is awesome.

I've been into Graveworm as of late, I especially love the instrumental "Threnody"

OH and Symphony X's new album is going to be a concept album based on John Milton's book "Paradise Lost" (for those unfamiliar, the internet is a wealth of all knowledge) I can't wait to see what they do with this.

I got the new Blind guardian... I don't much care for it. Kind of boring

Hoho, the new Rhapsody ( of Fire, now too! ) album was great with an ample amount of the usual gayness indeed. Strong vocals, awesome chanting, Christopher Lee narrating once again and their usual epic sound. I also felt their lyrics were better written than usual. My favorite piece was without a doubt Silent Dream. Old Age Of Wonders made me want to slit my wrists. FUCK THE GOD DAMN ELVES! I do however have to say that Rhapsody of Fire feels somewhat dull compared to Luca's own project Dreamquest (http://www.dreamquest.it/). Guess I'm growing somewhat tired of fantasy.

At any rate, it makes me pleased to see that both Rhapsody and Luca are developing in such positive ways ( unlike oh so many metal bands ). Now Staropoli just needs to release that damn solo album of his!

Some metal I like:
----
Soilwork - Predator's Portrait
Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity
Botch - Anthology of Dead Ends
Meshuggah - Chaosphere
----
I also like some stuff by Theory in Practice, Coalesce, derrrr.... as soon as I found this thread, of course I forgot all my favorite bands.

By far my favorite metal was composed by an amazing friend who is developing very complicated polyrhythms. So far I've seen him do four simultaneous meters (one with each limb). Heh, actually, he's a Japanese drummer who got me in to Naruto in the first place.

Well for some reason they have gotten a lot of american publicity lately, and as always when something hits the US, it gets blown up to ridiculous proportions. Personally I had a period where I loved DragonForce to death, and I still cherish a few of their songs very highly, but that was all from the first CD - Valley of the Damned.

The problem with DF is that the music is so fucking repeative. The first album was a masterpiece and it's own way groundbreaking, but after that it's gotten a bit silly I admit.

I love the guys though, and the vocalist is a nice guy (talked a bit with him online). And the song "Starfire" still makes me cry.

I listen to pretty much everything now but when I was younger (~'92 to '97) I used to listen to nothing but heavy metal. Favourites at the time were White Zombie, Pantera, Sepultura, Megadeath, Metallica, Ozzy. I also listened to Manson but I'm not sure if you can call him metal...

White Zombie was by far my favourite. Even now Astro-Creep: 2000 is an amazing album. If you haven't listened to this album then you're really missing out. I have Rob Zombie's first solo album, Hellbilly Deluxe, but I was a little disappointed. Despite still being pretty good, I felt it didn't quite match up to Astro or La Sexorcisto.

EDIT: Rammstein's stuff is also pretty good, from what I've heard

Nightwish kind of lost me with Once but Century Child is the best album I own. Period.

Ever Dream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZEQbcQ02gs) is my deity.

I love metal bands with good female singers (any suggestions?).
Luca Turilli's Dreamquest ( I freakin' love it! Have a sample! There's a lot more, but that's what comes to mind at the moment.

Did you actually like their new stuff? I couldn't get into it... maybe I was just spoiled by the old stuff and expected much more, or something.

Oh well - the new album was okay, but I was never really a fan of Jon to begin with. Being a satanic homophobic murderer just isn't cool, so his suicide doesn't bother me at all.

Back on topic (or rather, what everyone is talking about right now): Gothic Opera Metal is okay... but... um... I'm not sure about Nightwish. "I Wish I had an Angel" was pretty good... the music video made me laugh (because of the guitarists' expressions)... but I'm not sure what all the hype is about. Lacuna Coil... pretty good too. I can't stand any other gothic-opera singing bands, though. >_o;

Terracosmo

Nightwish is not gothic in the least. And you are only seeing it as "hype" because they more recently made it big in the US, before, when they were comparatively smaller, nobody really saw them as a hyped up band (the american effect yay!). :S

As for new Dissection, well, never liked the band that much anyway. Jon's private life doesn't concern me as long as the music is good, and it was only so-so in my eyes. Jon's younger brother Emil also has a band - Deathstars - which is on the move upwards (I just love it when bands you like suddenly for some reason gets a big break, in the form of a hit or something, and then everybody worships them - fucking posers). That band may be considered overblown but hey, they are still pretty good. I think I recommended them earlier in the thread..

It just failed to strike me on the same emotional level as the previous albums. I think the main reason why I was so disappointed was because it was hyped up to extreme levels in my mind. When it didn't even come close to Century Child I was naturally extremely disappointed.

None of the songs really appealed to me either. I found the best ones were Planet Hell and Ghost Love Score and that was mainly due to their epic nature. None struck me as hauntingly beautiful or particularly well written. Tuomas just didn't live up to his standards on that front.

Stone Sour's new album is really good. I really like Corey's vocals, his style reminds me a little of Maynard's from Tool. In the way that Corey also has both great harmonic and screaming capabilities as well as the thing between singing and screaming that I can't really describe. I'm not saying that he is as good as Maynard, cause that would be blesphamy and some divine force would surely smite me.

If you give the album a chance, pay special attention to 30/30-150 and Through Glass since those songs define the sound of the entire album.

If you like Opeth, Tool and Porcupine Tree, I highly suggest you get into King Crimson. They're a band best known for inspiring quite a few of the better modern rock bands (Maynard cites them as a main source of inspiration), and they've found a way to stay just out of the spotlight while enjoying a solid following.

If you want something with a harder sound (most Tool-like) try their last album, "The Power to Believe". Very interesting chord and pattern stuff there, too. Their earlier album, "Thrak", has a Porcupine Tree feel to it... or rather, the other way around. The 80's stuff is probably their most complex, but the 80's vibe is pretty strong and that might put you off. The 70's albums are also strongly recommended, probably the best of them being "Red", "Starless and Bible Black" or "In The Court of the Crimson King".
