Game: League of Legends (It's free!)

Hereby referred to as LoL.

Anyone playing this? It's made by the same team that produced DotA back in the day which was a mod for WC3. This is a standalone game however, and it's free. That's right, free! It's also similar gameplay style to Demigod, but I'm not sure how many people actually played that.

For the uninitiated, you have a hero, you're on a team of 5 allied heroes and you're facing a team of 5 opposing heroes. Each team has a base on opposite sides of the map with towers in between them. The objective is to slowly make your way to the opponent's base and destroy it, having to get through enemy heroes and towers on the way. There are AI controlled minions that are constantly streaming from each base and clashing to form battles which you join as your hero. As you kill minions, enemy heroes and destroy enemy towers you gain gold which you use to buy items. Pretty simple eh.

There are around 40 heroes to choose from, and for those who used to play DotA but didn't like the various imbalances involved, LoL is a major step in the right direction and has the balance pretty well down.

As you continue to play you gain points which allows you to unlock other things in the game, like runes which give you added bonuses as well as some other stuff. It has a pretty good leveling system and I find that the game matchmaker usually gets it right for putting inexperienced players against others of the same level.

the cool thing about this game is that teamplay is *everything*.
there's no way you can win a match if you play all by yourself. you really have to play *with* your team... trapping enemy heroes, help them retreat etc.

and it's really great for beginners because it has a tutorial and recommended item-builds
so even if you haven't played DotA, you won't have problems to use ur hero and play your role in a match (tank/fighter/burst/support etc)

Played this in the beta but didnt really like it that much, felt too dumbed down from the DotA i used to play.

Currently playing Heroes Of Newerth instead of both LoL and DotA. It's a direct DotA clone with a new engine alot of new features and very active developers, it's currently in closed beta but i think i have an invite or two to give out if people are interested :)

It's 25 in HoN just like dota, many heroes, spells and items have been directly converted.

You are correct, but it still doesn't change the fact that you can choose between 40 characters. You just can't play them all up front (unless you buy the game).

Just started playing this too. Do you guys have a favorite Champion so far? It's a tie between Master Yi and Ashe for me.

Master Yi is probably the strongest when playing 1v1 and targeting low health champions.

Nunu, Rammus, Dr. Mundo are great too though

and the new hero poppy has some really strong skills too

Yeah, he's pretty OP, well at least some people seem to think so on the forums.

mass HP...mass DMG...mass speed

his only weakness are skills which drastically slow him or stuns/long silence effects etc.
because changing stances is very important for the extra-dodge and attack-speed
(for maximum dmg too of course.)

when I played with Lucifus yesterday I used Blitzcrank.. that golem thingy.. he's awesome in teamfights.

Well, it depends on what character you're playing. The recommended items (up the top of the shop screen) can be alright, but there'll be some odd choices there too so don't always trust it.

If you want, tell us some of the characters you've liked playing as and we can suggest some items.

By the way, it may be obvious but just in case you don't know, you don't keep your items from game to game, you buy them during the game based on the gold you're earning at the time. It all resets for each game.

Well i've just been trying out different characters so far, and i seem to suck equally with all of them. My win loss ratio is pretty fucked, but i blame other people for that. I unlocked my first char yesterday....Sion the undead something or other, but it didn't seem to help much. What chars do you guys suggest i unlock? I want something that'll be good in 1vs1 combat mainly, since relying on your teammates rarely seems to pay off. Im tired of dying everytime i go up against another char.

And also, how many of you are active playing this....is there a GW team yet or what?
And who's Orekxl...is that someone here?

Sion is pretty strong, especially 1on1

however 1on1 is not important at all, he is strong in teamfights too. so you made a good buy with Sion.
Gangplank(?) (the pirate) is extremely strong to, he can crit for ~300 or more very early in the game which will take about ~50% of the enemies life-bar.

the most annoying heroes I hate to play against are (random order)

ryze, gangplank, dr. mundo (its pretty much *impossible* to kill him), the beast girl which can transform into a cat, the fire-kid-girl and twitch (the rat)

Amazing 1on1's?

Udyr, Tryndamere(Very difficult to learn), Ryze, Eve(Stealth), Twitch, Teemo, Sion, etc etc.

Any champion can be rape 1on1, you just need experience for when to go in for a kill or get the hell out of dodge. You just have to have a great team, and champions that compliment one another.

i started playing Teemo this week and found him pretty useful, but you're rite, its all about having the right tea. It pisses me off at times though when you can't rely on your team to back you up....died plenty of times as a result.

What times do you guys usually play?

Is there no way to actually leave a game? if i leave during a game, it just gives me a "game is still going on, please reconnect" option and nothing else. What if i dont wanna continue a game?

It's done that way on purpose, the idea is you see a game out to the finish because otherwise too many people will just leave and those who want to stay keep having to restart.

If you leave you get penalties, but I'm not sure what they are (having never left a game and having never bothered to look it up).

Season 1 started, ranked ladder matches

really nice system, with banning 4 Heroes at the beginning and a new hero-pick system

I`m playing it, ALMOST level 10 :D

I've been playing solo-ranked games so far, but I keep getting horrible teams and I haven't had a win yet. A game I played the other day ended up with me vs 5, the rest of my team had AFKed. :(

Ended my addiction to this game. I created a Gamebattles team for the tournament pre-season and finished 2nd. Even held first for a wee and defeated the #1 ranked team once, ended their 35+ winning streak.

But all me and my team got were 10 dollar riot point cards each after long long hours of gameplay, strats. etc. Over 65 games played for that season, non-stop everyday. -_-

At the end of the season, I was pretty much sick of LoL and still am.

im still hooked.....just bought xin zhao a few days ago. he's ridiculously op. but its not all that helpful if you're team sucks.

I keep having to explain to people that turrets should be attacked first, instead of tower diving......i dont know why no one gets it. I onces lost a game, where i had solo'd one of the enemy nexus turrets, and then had to run back cuz thier team respawned and none of my team was there to help........they then proceeded to run us over and win the game. pissed me off so much.

I recently tried a warwick jungle build, it's absolutely amazing.

I was able to solo baron by lvl 13-14 to give team a nice boost. This guy is absolutely amazing for ganking so you can help different lane without worrying too much about exp lost.

You should try teemo....one of my favorite champs. A sneaky little bugger and very annoying once you know how to play him.

He's pretty awful, however. He's probably on the same tier as Evelynn for useless champions.

On that note, solo ranked queue has been pissing me off. Was 1512 earlier but dropped to 1394, due to having 2 feeder games, 1 leaver game, and 1 dumbass jungling Shen (wtf?) who kept crying the other team's jungling Warwick was outlevelling him. No shit, I wonder why? Then lastly, I hate to take a loss, a leave, and an ELO hit because the shitty PVP.net client bugged during draft mode.

So i just bought Vladimir.

He's squishy early on but i found him to be amazing later. His ultimate is like the "I win team battle" button unless your team is completely useless. Sanguine pool is easily one of the best utility move in the game and it makes chasing or running so much easier. His nature of not having mana and cast with health lets him lane forever without needing to go back if played properly.

if you really really want to win guys, play mordekaiser.
he's probably the strongest hero early/mid-game and the best laning hero (he will dominate 2v1 lanes or at least the enemy team won't even touch ur turret), and one of the stronger champs in late-game.
so overall, he's just amazing and OP

Are we playing the same game here? Sure Mord's a good character, but he's not OP by far. The best 1v2 champions are Nasus, AP Sion, Morgana or a Deny-focused Gangplank.

He dips off during late-game. There're much stronger late-game champions.

Mord is tanky while doing decent damage and his ultimate lets him push towers with ease. Animus is right though, his dmg is pretty meh late game and he lacks CC and chase abilities.

his teamfight dps is above average late game, and extremely high early/mid

late-game:
1-2 sfc + W skill = 200dps*hero -> 3~5 heroes = 600-1000dps

no autoattack
no E or Q no ult no ignite.

and morde can just as easily kill minions as morgana if not better
its just that most mordeplayer skill Q because they suck ass and don't know that W (shield) is his main ability from lvl 4 onwards

and people don't know that they have to stack magic-pen (runes+item).

during the lane phase I can run into minions with my W and regenerate more shield-power than a single hero is able to deal dmg to me.
and get every single minion kill + 4-creep-pack in the jungle (near mid... that is, if I solo mid)

1. pendant(or doran) @ "5." sell or upgrade
2. sorceress boots
3. sunfirecape
4. frozen Mallet
5. second Sunfirecape(enemy-melee-team) or force of nature (magic resist)
6 abysmall sceptre (that one with a -70 magic resist aura)
7. choose what you think is best... warmogs (acutally a pretty bad item), GA etc.

I should try that build.....i've been trying to find a tank to play. I bought rammus, and hes good but he doesn't have any direct attacking abilities, and my play style is too aggressive for him. I tried malaphite as well, but he only has one real damage ability which is seismic shard and it takes alot of mana early/mid game.

I played during Closed Beta, and only recently started playing LoL again.


Typical characters I use mostly - Xin, AP Sion, Nasus, Jungle Amumu, and Warwick.

I only have one. Its Ziapsu. too bad there isnt a clans feature in LoL.

Just finished a ranked game with a loss where we had an awful ass Warwick, that went 3/16/3. His build was fine but he does the dumbest fucking things. The funniest thing is at the beginning of the game he said he didn't have masteries and had his rune page set up for Kayle.
Sigh.

I was Xin and we could've easily won that game, we had Xin, Warwick, Vlad, Malphite, Taric. They had Rammus, Janna, Singed, Ezreal, and Kogmaw. I pretty much destroy their Ezreal and Kog in 2 seconds and I did, but life's hard when you have their Rammus taunting you whenever his CD allows, the singed throwing down Adhesive then flinging you, and their Janna using their ult to reset the team fight and blow you off their squishies. I ended 13/9/8, but I was 13/5/4 before the fights started going downhill because our Warwick was just straight up awful and wasn't holding his weight.

It wasn't like his build was wrong, it was the typical build of boots (but the damn ass got Berserker Greaves with so many forms of CC), Madred's Bloodrazor, and Guardian Angel.

Thats what i love and hate about the game. Its totally team based, so you can win or lose regardless of how good any one individual is.

I think the problem a lot of WW players has is that they are too overconfident in him staying alive. I mean, WW is awesome and just his passive can out heal Baron damage. Most of his survivability thought is base solely in his ability to drain so when he get stun or exhaust, he's pretty much a sitting duck.

Had another game I just won luckily, which had another awful Warwick. Honestly, I seem to never get the good Warwicks on my team, but always get the awful ones.

The only good thing about this WW is that he got an oracles to kill Ward's and solo'd dragon/duo'd Baron when we were kinda idling after we took out an inhib or two.

Tried out singed as my first main character, stubbornly stuck with him for a week and realized that i just plain suck with him so I switched to shen. Feel that im at least decent with him, I love Shen's ultimate stand united, saved myself and a few friends with it.

Got the new hero, Miss Fortune and played a few games with her. She's pretty fun, her Q is great at harassing, and her passive is good. However as with her archetype she's a pretty hard carry with no escape mechanisms, so Flash/Ghost are pretty much required. She's an EXCELLENT farmer. Ended one game at 234 creep kills at around the 40ish minute mark, along with 11 kills 1 death and 10 assists.

It's usually people you have just played with and wants to form a team so they dont get noob teamates.

Finally hit lvl 30 about a week or so ago, moved on from shen and now started to play amumu. God I love his ultimate. Next ill try akali once I work out a starter build for her and once I have enough IP to buy her runes.

I've been playing Swain quite a bit. Most of the people on the LoL forum complains that's he's either underpowered or overpowredbut i feel like he's actually very balanced.

I found that he fit the support role better since he tend to be very fragile late game. Swain W is one of those ability that will net your team many kills if use properly.

My kill to death ratio with him have mostly been positive. In fact, i ended one game versus a terrible team with 30/2/12.

Swains really really weak. They're buffing his AP ratios like crazy in the next patch. Most of his were like .6 or .7 and they're bumping them to .9

His ult will also heal more now. Swains pretty useless though, once he uses his ult to keep himself in the fight. It uses sooo much mana.

His ultimate does use a lot of mana but i found that having the team help you get blue buff or having an Archangel staff help toward that cost quite a bit.

In a team fight you shouldn't be in a position to where it's required to have your ultimate up for the entire duration to say alive. I usually throw a DOT, Root the carries, laserbird someone for dmg then pop ultimate and back off a bit. He's one of the those champion that requires your team to be competent because 2 of his abilities are CC effects. I won't complain about his AP being buff, but i find that it's not too difficult to get kills even in ranked games so that just might lead to more OP crying.

I don't think the healing on his ult should be increase, what they should do is increase the base damage and lower the heal percentage to keep it around the same level.

His E giving teamate half the amount of % damage increase that swain gets would be nice though.

But the thing is he suffers from the same syndrome as Urgot. Sure he may CC one or two targets but after that, he's so insignificant that there's no point. He doesn't do enough damage and while his Q and E might sound good on paper, they're not that great in practice.

I rarely see Swain in ranked, but when I do they always amount to little less than feeding. What would've been nice was if his E actually did what it said it would in the Champion Spotlight.

Oh jeez, Swain has been out for about a week and theres already a preview for a new champion.

You do know that they've been releasing a new Champion every other week for quite awhile already, right?

Funny you should mention Urgot because he's totally getting ignored for the next patch.

I do see what you mean about Swain damage though, because i start to stagnate around level 12 or so. My only worry about buffing is that it might make his early game damage too good and then he'll just get a harder nerf in the following patch.

Been getting pretty heavily into Sona lately as it suits my play style to support the team at the back and rack up the assists. I can do more damage than I imagined too, if I build it right.

Normally I go for the team buff items like Innervating Locket, Aegis of the Legion and Soul Shroud. Once I hit 40% CDR I can have all 3 auras up at once, and I've found it can really turn the tide of battle.

Lately I've been going about 5/3/25-35 with a competent team. Maybe I've been lucky but I hardly ever lose a game with her. Lovin' it.

I love Sona, but i seem to be better with Taric, i love tanking towers with Radiance and doing that annoying stun as heroes try to run away from my teammates, plus, he`s fabulous.

I like playing as Ashe, her utility is just awesome, and being able to carry the team is nice too.

gotta love volley spam, its *so annoying* for the enemy team, I can't even describe it.

Been playing Lux since she came out, I was so bad at first but now im at least not get more deaths then kills. She is fun as hell to use. Next character im thinking of buying might be Vlad or Miss Fortune.

Every match takes about 30 mins more or less, i wouldn`t consider it something for work.

Some games can take upwards of an hour+. Those don't happen that often, but it's not out of the ordinary.

hehe, I've already played 2 games today at work... both took 30min or so... They were against NPCs though. I bet I'd piss some people off by joining an official match and then going AFK.

Did some 5v5 today, i destroyed a Yi like 3 times at level 2, which made him rage quit, which in turn made Galio rage quit, which in turn made Janna quit, GG.

At what lvl do you guys actually start playing in PvP matches... aka not practice games? I'm about lvl 6 now, and have been saving my IP so I have no runes.

You can start pvp right away, usually matchmaking sets you up with people with around the same Elo score(and lvl I believe, but im not sure). Only thing you might wanna worry about are veteran players creating low lvl accounts to play against less experienced players.

Also, about runes, Tier 3 runes(which you can get at lvl 20) are the best runes at the game. Right now however there is a event that gives you special holiday runes(that are tier 2(lvl10 requirement) that give you about 90% of the stats of tier 3 but at a ip cost at less then half of tier 3. You might wanna buy these special runes even since lvl 10 isnt that hard to get to.

Practice games won't give you anything, you'll only get points/XP when you play for real.

i love it when you start a match 4v5, have your first turret destroyed in the first 5 min and then proceed to thrash the other team so badly they decide to surrender.

Have been playing this for a few months last year together with friends. It's like the amateur version of the original DotA. No denying creeps, no blocking them either. Gold for creep kills are halfed and gold per tick has been multiplied. You also lose less gold if you die compared to DotA as far as I remember. Playing the 3v3 map was fun for awhile though.

Waiting for DotA 2.

LoL is *alot* faster and less boring than DotA (especially early game) because of what you just pointed out

in DotA nearly everyone will pick a carry (or even hard-carries) and farm gold till they get their items.
in LoL the laning phase is over as soon as 1 tower is down or a certain hero hits lvl6
which happens a lot faster too because their is no denying by killing creeps.. there are other ways of denying XP and gold, which is a lot more skillfull ( "know your zones") than killing all the minions before they reach the outer tower :/

I really hope they don't make the same mistakes in DotA2
for example: the lack of scaling for casters in DotA.

This last two matches are the most strange ones i`ve ever had,first i get two random partners
and... i do bad at the beggining, turns out they are literally 12 years old, so they start bitching the shit out of me as the match goes by, i start outdamaging my team by a long shot and im carrying them the enemy realizes this and comment on it, they call me pro and badass while my team call me noob and down syndrome... we win that match, then i do another random
and my new team has to fight my ex-12 year olds team... and we destroy them, one of then rage quits, the other one keeps talking crap, but the damage was done, i felt so bad, and then so good, and then so awsome.

The latest patch seems to be a major one:

-Innervating locket removed
-Flash no longer pops projectiles(no more flash dodges)
-phantom dancer no longer provides dodge chance
-Randuins Omen cooldown reduction down to 8% from 15% and reduced armor 80 from 90
-last whisper giving attack dmg now instead of attack speed
-all sight wards hp reduced to 1hp and reduced duration time 3mins down from 3.5min
-all elixers nerfed

Not sure how I feel about this patch yet, but this is gonna seriously effect a lot of my characters.

why would someone build a phantom dancer now?

I like the Last Whisper rework though

I built it on ashe mainly for the move speed(since the nerf to the move speed of most range carries), I probably still build it but much later in favor of more important damage items.

I've started playing it in free time, seems pretty fun and its way better(and less elitist) than lowly dota.
Ezreal is pretty fun to play.

Can't believe Innervating Locket is gone... nooooooooo...

No more stacking Sunfire Capes either! :(

Zeal(x2) is probably the better and more cost effective way, especially if they didn't change the item cost.

i dont like the new last whisper.....the attack speed was what i loved about it. it was my first item on xin or panth. And the precious change of malady fucked my teemo build

isn't the new Malady perfect for teemo? especially AP/Attackspeed builds?
I'm not a fan of teemo, since he's too easy to kill, especially since slow-items got nerfed on range characters.

I'm playing Ashe and I like the new Last Whisper alot because attackspeed is not that important while kiting enemies., the really bad thing is that all 3 pots got weaker.
and on a side note, flat ArP is probably better than % unless your enemies have more than ~110 armor

you can reach ~96 flat ArP with Ghostblade/Brut/Starks + Runes + Masteries

I wouldn't recommend using last whisper unless your enemy team is full of tankish characters who stack armor OR if you arn't using any ArP runes
