I don't think anyone was saying they don't like the parts with Griffiths, but just more I don't think they could add anymore at this point, the whole charlotte and marriage thing, and saving the pontiff are very crucial to the story line. More Griffiths parts are going to be needed with the story especially in the stage it is at now, but would be nice to get some more development on the Guts side, it will be good to see when more people start to recognise him as the former Raiding Commander for the Hawks, and that he's opposing Griffiths.

I am actually anticipating the time in which Griffith reveals his true colors as the Hawk of Darkness and ushers in this foretold "age of evil" that's been eluded to a couple of times.

I never liked Firenze, but this chapter warmed me up to her a little. I'm glad to see she might become a secondary mage, but I doubt she'll ever be as useful as Serpico or Schiernke (sp?).
Isidoro's still as resourceful as ever, and Azan just as clumsy... The navigator has some brains, it appears... Not a whole lot to discuss. Beautifully drawn as always, but I enjoyed the more dynamic events around Griffith more than this... Let's hope they reach land soon and get moving.

Yeah, I can't really say anything about this chapter that hasn't already been said. But who is that blackbeard guy? Is he the short dude that used the staff or just someone I totally forgot about? (With the chapters coming out so rarely, I tend to forget a lot of things).

It's Azan, one of the higher ranked soldiers in Farnese's Holy Iron Chains.
Well, it will be good once they land on Elfheim, it will be good place for Guts to heal up, considering where they will be.

I fail to see the point of this chapter. Awesome and enthralling? What's so good about it? It didn't really accomplish anything besides tell us that Farneze might like Guts and show us his body.
Then read between the lines. Everything that is and might be, what has not yet come to pass and what has passed before your eyes unnoticed.
As carnage says. This is a question that most of us readers have been asking ourselves for a long time, and now to see Guts ask this question is a proof of that he has matured and slowed down a bit. And not only that, with this question he is actually considering that "bringing Caska back" might not be the best for her.
But also, Guts saving Caska out of the water, what significance does that have to Caska who has been afraid of Guts for so long?
And beyond that, this chap was pure art in a mental state. When he was talking about his hand falling off, and thinking back to all the times he spent with Caska in different situations, just beautiful.
Unlike all the chaps with senseless fighting, this chap was one of those chaps that actually moves the series forward. And in what dirrection, well the creator likes keeping us in suspens, so, we'll just have to wait and see.
And what I feel about Guts question is that he doesn't have a say in it. Caska needs her memories back no matter how painful they are. I Realize that the reason she became that way was to deal with the ordeal. This was the only way possible for her. And if given her memories back she will probably go crazy to say the least, but I think she will be strong enough now to handle it. And not only she will need that inner strenght, but everyone around her needs it. She could be a great asset in their fight and she could be a very powerful motivator for Guts.
Carnage
Mon, 07-16-2007, 04:36 PM
Idk, Caska is going to have to deal with the memory of being raped by monsters and also not knowing where her kid is...maybe she's better off being retarded. :p
masamuneehs
Mon, 07-16-2007, 05:02 PM
i can't imagine a story so heavilly enamored with the theme of 'painfully overcoming impossible opposition' would allow for Caska to remain without her memories forever... Surely dealing with those memories won't be easy for her, but I feel that it'll have to happen eventually...
interestingly, remember when she was about to be raped by those random three guys? and Guts finds them dead, and her covered in blood and holding a sword? I think it might take a similar episode to revive not only her fighting skills, but her memory as well. that scene always sticks with me when i think about her future...
also, about this latest chapter, why didn't Firenze want to know what the end of Guts' sentence was? Just normal embarassment at eavesdropping? And, and probably more importantly, did Schierke hear it? It appeared that she got back to her body a bit after Firenze, and she had a face on like she had heard something she didn't want to face...
Shinji Ikari
Mon, 07-16-2007, 05:49 PM
I was actually thinking she might not want to know because she has taken a liking to Caska :P It's too kliché if for her to fall for Guts since every other girl out there also falls for him... So her falling for Caska would be interesting.
Masamune, I can't see her haing to fight demons to get her memories back because there aren't supossed to be any on Elfheim, but I do see her lashing out at Guts. Trying to kill him and what else might feel good at the moment... After all, that's what she has done to him earlier when a trauma has occured.
Actually he might even let her release her pain on him, killing him... Now that would be a twist in the story.
Ryllharu
Mon, 07-16-2007, 09:04 PM
There's one more possibility for why Farense backed out. What if Guts had said instead of the obvious guess "She is my woman," rather, "She is my comrade/commander/[other military connotation]"
None of his new comrades seem to realize the two of them are the famous Strike Leaders from the former Band of the Hawk. They clearly know of those two historical figures in Midland, but don't seem to connect that Guts and Caska are in fact The Guts and perhaps more prominently The Caska.
It's a long shot, but if Scherkie (sp?) can reach into the depths of Guts' mind while in the Astral plane, Farense may as well.
It's one thing to be war heroes. It's another to be a member of the Band of the Hawk.

a hunch tells me she won't quite regain all her memories until it's some dark situation. also, i was wondering, what if Guts loses control again and attacks her again? They only casually hinted at it in this chapter, but it's still in play...
kAi
Tue, 07-17-2007, 05:52 AM
One of the things that I've always wondered with Caska losing her memory would be how she regains it. I've come to think of a few ways of this happening.
One possible way:
After Guts leaves Elfheim, on his search for Griffiths is that some how Caska goes missing or is picked up and she sees Griffiths and has the instant connection (like she already does, and something like what you see back when Guts fought Zodd over the swords) and gets early memories back from those times where Griffiths saved her and picked her up, followed with more memories of the band of the hawk.
Slowly getting more memories back, but the memories stop once Guts comes involved and she only sees him as the one that killed her comrades, possibly the one she layed down with to keep warm, and only has contempt for him.
Enter Guts, seeing Caska with Griffiths drives him mental, Caska only having bad images of Guts could possibly attack or doesn't care for him, Guts goes Apostle killing crazy.
After this point and between the next one is where I don't know what should happen.
Slowly Caska starts seeing memories of Guts being a person who saves her, and then at a point she notices Griffiths being the bad guy and then BOOM, Griffiths giving the Band of the Hawk as sacrifices and raping her, she's having a mental state as Griffiths and Guts are fighting at the moment, but then Caska finishes Griffiths off.
After this would be Guts realising his dream of swinging his sword with Caska or something like that
Griffiths would've already achieved his dream, so dreaming is good, and Caska is the one who finishes the fight between Guts and Griffiths.

Yea, that wouldnt be a bad way to go, since arguably Griffth has done wore to her than Guts. I think him raping her, taking her sanity, and taking her child is way worse than the mental and physical torture that Guts has been through....and that's saying something.

Gutts doing the yumi thing for Kenshin and jumps Griffith to allow Caskc to stab through both of them, and in his last breath says something stupid like 'thank you' fto guts.
Griffy dies, but does so in the hands of his beloved Guts.
Guts gets to see Griffith dead, but at the same times brings him back.
Caska gets her memories back, but has nothing left from her past life.
Edit:
I think Guts was about to say "She is my sin" or something like that (burden, responsability, debt, seal) in that lines, maybe he said she is his connection to the world, I can't believe he talked about love or friendship.

At any rate, I won't attempt to summarize my impressions seeing that we're 33 volumes in and I'd probably end up writing a boring essay only I'd appreciate =P Manga's good and I'll keep reading.
Incidentally, I find the storyline more interesting when they're concentrating on Gutts than Griffith. I can't stand how his character is drawn and anything he does I know he will do brilliantly so I find him less intriguing and not as fun to read about. But that's just me. And I'm rooting for return of full mental health for Caska, no matter what the cost :p

I'm tempted to agree with DeathbooZ's second paragraph (the first bit would be a horrible disappointment, in my eyes, if it came to pass...) I don't think Guts would admit, to a relative stranger of all people, his true feelings for Caska. "My responsibility..." would be exactly what I'd fill the empty line with...

Berserk is Miura's only ongoing work. He got really sick one time, and there were barely any releases for a year. Other than that it just seems to be the extreme detail in the art combined with long breaks he always seems to take.

I suddenly imagined this author as one of those typical side anime characters: the highly accoladed genius who's lazy as shit and totally unperturbed by his bosses/superiors' cries for making deadlines because he knows he's sitting on a golden egg and they can't do anything about it.
Genma
Thu, 10-04-2007, 01:05 PM
Doubt it. For example, look at HxH's last few chapters before the incredibly long hiatus. The art is awful, the plot is somewhat dull, and it just seemed half-assed as hell. Just because Berserk is pumped out once in a blue moon doesn't mean the mangaka isn't trying; look at the art, the explicit detail of Gut's burns, everything. And I mean come on, drawing the same manga for almost twenty years now (it premiered in '88, the year I was born :B) is bound to cause a lack of interest or motivation for the mangaka.
Just because he doesn't have deadlines doesn't mean he's lazy.

looks like the emperor wants to ascend beyond the level of a super saiyan.
I wonder how he'll be taken by the rest of the advocates (how were those 4 called?) if they start viewing him as one of them and not as a poor imatation (do you think thy have any respect for the proper order of these stuff?), it might be the turnning point for griffith's victory, once taken down from the pedestal of the Messhia, he's nothing more than an apostle for Gutts sword to crush, and the Kushan emp doesn't want to change the world (other than taking it under his control).

Actually, at this point, I feel kind of bad for Ganishka. Afterall, according to the prophetic dream (probably manufactured by Griffith), the big, bad emperor will gain some horrendous power, but will simply be blown away again in the next confrontation with Griffith.

I finally picked up this manga, which is also my first. I went out and bought volume 1 today. This is suppose to help me stay away from games so I can focus more on school. Stay at the library and study, when I get bored, I'll just pick up my manga and read it.... Instead of losing focus and going home because I'm bored out of my mind.
Hopefully this plan works, or this $13 will be for nothing! lol.
How many volumes are out? I saw up to 20 at the store.
Right off the bat, Some differences from the anime are obvious. I see that the girl being kicked around in the bar in the anime was suppose to be that fairy named Puck.

I seriously don't see how this is gonna help you study. You'll get so wrapped up in this manga you wish you'd never begun reading it, because you'll never want to put it away once you start. This is THE ALL-TIME BEST manga out there. Well, at least it's good that you have come closer to it and will begin reading it. There is a total of 33 volumes at the moment, but I can't say how many there are in the US stores, I just don't know since I live in Sweden :)

I don't agree, I think reading the manga after has been much more awarding. Partially because I didn't know there was a manga in the beginning and when I found out I was super happy. But also because if you read the manga, there simply isn't any point in watching the anime, and also if you do watch it after reading, you will just start complaining about the little things.

There is supposed to be a new chapter every other week... (is that how you say it? :P) However, unlike most mangaka, Berserk mangaka is very special with it seems unlimited freedom to do what he wants when he wants. So if we even get 1 chapter each month it would almost be a miracle. KAi seems to think that march is the big month, lets hope he is correct. :D

First off, sorry guys, still no news on when the next chap is due.
This is more about the content of the manga. I just re-read it for like the 100th time... And this is the first time I actually notice that Griffith wasn't able to shake his feelings for Caska and Guts.
You all remember he went to the cemetary to meet with guts to see if he would feel nothing, and he says he doesn't feel anything. And then Zodd starts doing the rumble with Guts.
This is the first time that I actually reflected upon the baby that Griffith used to become "human" again... It was just a minor but still significant part of this manga that I had totally overlooked.
Can't wait for the next chap... well I guess I can, since it's probably gonna be more Griffith bullshit, I skip reading his parts every time I re-read the manga because him and the little witch girl who follows him around make me sick to my stomach

Heh, the little psychic girl (whose name escapes me), you mean?
Considering the feelings she harbors for Griffith, I want to see her at least stir up some unease among Griffith's fantasy paradise.

Really like the atmosphere in this chapter, gotta hand it to Miura to be able to convey the loud and noisy as well as the still and silent equally well.
Of course, this also whets my appetite for the next chapter, when Ganishka pops out of his cocoon a beautiful butterfly, of sorts.

However, the other half of the storyline is like Gilligan's Island in reverse.
"When will they ever get to the island?!"
I do really like these chapters, but I still feel we need to move on. Griffith is super nice and invincible, we get it. He's going to kill the Emperor, become king, rape Charlotte (again) and rule under the enormous lie that he is one of the God's Hand (embodiment of all evil).
But where are the other God's Hand in all this? We've seen them face off against the Skeleton Knight or Guts once or twice. Perhaps they are waiting for Griffith to set up their kingdom? Or is Griffith once again "good" after being reborn? Zodd's allegiance tells us otherwise, so perhaps they are only biding there time.
Chiodos
Mon, 02-25-2008, 05:32 PM
I actually like the theory that Griffith is only there to set up their kingdom.
But, woudn't they have done it way earlier? Or did they need someone that has the quality of a leader, like Griffith?
And what's going to happen IF after he has become left and right? They'll disspose of him and Guts going to have remorse and try to save him but will fail and have to fight up against the God's Hand itself? Maybe the Skeleton Knight got glimpes of this and turned out and does what he does.It seems though very unlikly but still.
I also don't see Zodd's allegiance more than just mere pawns that are easly to breed and move without big questioning.
Ryllharu
Mon, 02-25-2008, 06:17 PM
Zodd has always been the "Guts" of evil. He's one of the most powerful warriors in the land, and has a strange sense of honor for one of his kind. Still, he kneels before Griffith easily enough, and was the first thing to come to Griffith after he was reborn into the world. I would not be all too surprised if his code of honor leads him to betray Griffith.
There so little we know about the other 4 God's Hand. But at least some of them are the more interesting characters. I suspect the only reason they've never moved before is simply that none of them had the drive to do so. Perhaps the mortal world was now beneath them. Griffith on the other hand, had left so much unfinished. Griffith was tortured after nearly achieving his dreams of being somebody. Had he not gone crazy from Guts leaving and gone after Charlotte, it is likely he would have ended up King anyway. After using the Behilit, his aspirations continued anyway, and he returned to claim his Earthly throne.
(I needed to look up two of the names on wikipedia)
- Void (the brain guy), is simple enough. He appears to be the precursor to Guts and Griffith, his nemesis being the Skull Knight. He also appeared to be the leader, which meant he was either the first, or the last. Since Schierke's master knew the Skull Knight, we can presume he was the most recent.
- Conrad and Ubik (the ones I looked up), are fairly generic and uninspired. They are probably the oldest of the God Hand though.
- Lastly, there is Slan, the one who looks like a succubus. She and Void are by far the most interesting of the Hand. Berserk takes place in a medieval era, and if I remember right the God Hand are created every couple of centuries. It doesn't seem like Slan would work her way up the same way the others did. Unlike Griffith, and probably Void, it would be incredibly hard for Slan to carve her own little empire before ending up relying on a Behilit for power. After all, she's the only female Hand. That gives me the impression that she was either some manner of deposed nobility (like the infamous Countess, Elizabeth Báthory), or something even more interesting. Plus, she has had some strange fascination with Guts from her appearance in the first few volumes.
I would really love to see her backstory.

There is no possibility for any of the god hands to join the real world like Griffith has. And the only reason Griffith was able to join the real world was because of Caskas and possibly Guts offspring. Rather, by having the egg eat the offspring he was able to be reborn.
And most of the people are blaming Guts and Caska for being heretics and stuff like that. And even though they aren't really, there ones blaming them aren't totally off either since most of what's happening in the real world has only been made possible because there is some being that live between worlds, the branded ones.
And now that the dark hawk of destruction (whom everyone thinks is the white hawk of salvation) Griffith is reborn the world have begun to merge and the apocalypse is closing in on the people. It's so funny that everyone belives Griffith to be the white hawk and follow him like blind sheeps when it has been said (for us readers to know) that he is clearly the dark/black hawk, muhahahaha.
That makes me wonder though. Since there clearly is a white hawk/eagle (whatever, the translation says different things several times) according to the prophecy of the world... Who is this person? Is it in fact Guts? And in that case, isn't it kind of ironical that the black is dressing up in white and the white is dressing up in black (aha, guess Guts lil' white hair might be the give-away).
Edit: One more thing about "making their move". They are making their move all the time by controlling the destiny of man. They say all the time (boating about it actually) that they are the ones who control destiny, but that they can't control every detail, and that in the ceremony, they can't fortell because they are kind of cut off. Getting the fifth and final god hand was their plan, what streches beyond that has not been mentioned. It might be that they need the fifth to keep a better grip on destiny, or it might because they knew that the fifth would be able to break through to the real world (kind of strange if the knew though).

While on the subject of the God Hand, to me, it seems that some of them only serve short spans and are capable of being deposed. I assume this is the case since the Eclipse that marks the ascension of a new God Hand takes place in a defined cycle of years (the number escapes me), as well as the special ceremony (when God Hand takes flesh, again, in 200 some-odd years). Makes me wonder if Griffith is, indeed, killable now.

And the only reason Griffith was able to join the real world was because of Caskas and possibly Guts offspring. Rather, by having the egg eat the offspring he was able to be reborn. I did not say that they would become corporeal again like Griffith. Griffith (as Femto) raped Caska, corrupting her child and Guts' for the sole purpose of his return.
But we have been learning that the two worlds are beginning to merge (the apocalypse). This is what Guts used to call "the border." Farense and Serpico (and all the others Guts encountered since the eclipse) were exposed to this sooner than everyone else.
If Griffith is able to accelerate this joining (as he already has by bringing so many Apostles into his new Band of the Hawk), perhaps he will become Femto once more when he is done and the rest of the God Hands will follow. The natural world has been corrupted since the Behilit was last used, and it has only been getting worse and worse.
They can and have manifested themselves into some semblance of physical form. Conrad (puckerface) showed up as a bunch of plague rats, and Slan appeared and fought with Guts as monster intestines.
If Griffith succeeds, they probably won't have to bother with that anymore.

What I don't really get (or remember) is what gives the resurruction of Griffith? I have a vauge memory that they just left that blank, that he JUST did.
I'm actually more interested in Skull Knight, though he is the most stereotypical and dull. Slan on the other hand, well, I can say that there's alwasy this female.
Still, will problaby take litteraly a year before we know anything more about her, considering where this is going. They still need to show more deeper in the others, or just...show them like they did with Slans encounter with Guts.
What I also want to know, there's no more Behelit?
Shinji Ikari
Wed, 02-27-2008, 09:47 AM
The rebirth of Griffith is made possible by a number of things. First off they had to make a new hand and have sacrifices. But the key ingredient in making this soup of sacrifices and already dead people (being the massive force of spiritual beings not able to cross to the other world lost in the astral plain) work was Caska and or Guts. As I get it, if they had not been there at all, the ceremony could not have been initiated properly. They would just have had a lot of loose ingredients. And then when it comes to Griffiths rebirth more closely, the egghead was the container and the baby he ate became Griffith. Or so it would seem to me, since Griffith later on gets irritated because he still has feelings for Caska and Guts (which is the cause of the demon baby/spawn).
So Griffith is in short born through the egg who ate the baby... And this was possible to begin with because Guts and Caska were the chefs who stired the soup of sacrifices and ghosts together.
But of course Guts and Caska are not to blame for this event, or not at least entirely to blame. Caska as we know was drawn there by fate/destiny (whatever).
And I think we won't get to know much more about the god hands or the Skull Knight since the story has so far put them up on a pidestal, sort of making their lives untouchable (not unkillable since that is Guts whole life (swimming against the stream of destiny)). Some interesting small things surely, but no real details probably.
The behelit still exists, well, at least the eggs that were sent out into the world. Maybe there can't be another one after the whole egg-event-thingy. But I think there can still be Behelits, it just seems like the God Hand needs them to exist.... I have no idea, just speculating

What about reading the posts before you... we already know a new chapter was released.
As to why this is dead, well the pace is too slow for this series... especially for a series that comes out so infrequently. Something big needs to happen soon or we better be well rewarded for this slow pace because it really makes no sense. This series comes out once a month or so, with a 20 page chapter with little content... The least this guy could do is either release more frequently or give us 30+ pages per chapter or so.
Well, I don't really want to complain... but it has to be explained why there's little discussion about this. The pace for this series is completely wrong, especially when it relates to release frequency.

What brought many of us to this series is not being shown. I know the guy has health problems and all but that doesn't mean release the same thing every three months after a two month break lol.

it has been awhile. i caught up, and i'm actually enjoying what's going on with Griffith and the emperor. i really thought the latest chapter with the Emperor 'losing himself in himself' was a rather well done and dramatic one. too bad it's a character most of us don't care about.
so, griffith is doing all these good things and, and i can't believe i'm even wondering this... but is there a chance that maybe he's building a 'country of his own' that would actually be a good place? Sure, he's uniting the Vatican countries probably just to control them, but did he really need to save the lives of all those people in Midland? Or is this all a setup for when Griffith goes and fucks everyone over somehow?
I've been pondering this for awhile, and I'm going to be doing it anyway since it's something i think i'll enjoy.
i'm going to be writing a few little essays on some of the reoccurring themes in Berserk. there's alot more to this manga than just 'cool action and memorable characters', and i've pulled up a list of things i'd write about. tell me if you think i should add a theme or if i missed one.
losing oneself - 1 - losing oneself in oneself
losing oneself - 2 - losing oneself in others, in the world
eyes
Beauty and loss of beauty
animal, monster or human? - blurring the lines
water - 1 - kinds of, what they represent
water - 2 - flow
Dreams
Sexual violence
Followers and leaders - sacrifice and service
Friends
Shedding - bonds, blood
women
hands
doctrine vs personal beliefs/direction
nature and manmade manifestations
Revenge
Fire - sparks and steady flame
recommendations for additions are welcome.

Well there is one aspect to his country that just means doom no matter how you look at it. He makes no distinction between alive and dead creature. I mean, living people are bound to be eaten in his little "utopia". As long as Griffith lives, evil will follow him like they do Gats and Caska.
And this brings me to a very sad topic, the only way for this to end is if Gats and Caska become free of their curse, which probably will only happen if all the god hands are dead. Pretty big task, and more likely is that Gats will die trying.
Also, to "kind of" add to your list:
The good guy being the bad guy in the eyes of people.
The bad guy being the good guy in the eyes of people.
I just love this theme of the manga. Only a few people know to call Griffith "The hawk of darkness", everyone else calls him "the hawk of light". On the other hand, where ever Gats goes he is hated like no tomorrow, and he is actually in the right, which only a few selected people know.
I just love that shit, could talk about it for hours.

i'll have to check the RAW.
If he actually referred to them as 'demons' in front of the Princess, the Pope and everyone in Midland, then, wow, that's a great move on his part.
I mean, there's no way they can get out of this battle without acknowledging the power of Griffith and his Apostles. Just plainly showing them, "Yeah, my army of hell spawn just kicked the shit out of the evil invader (demon) and saved the entire kingdom." puts everyone in the uncomfortable position of plainly seeing what kind of power Griffith has and being unable to do much about it.
It's a brilliant power play. Nobody will ever get to say "Man, something's fishy with Griffith's most powerful soldiers" because everyone will know for sure that that's how he rolls, with butt loads of super powerful demons. He's thrown diplomacy and clever schemes to the wind, banking on his horrifyingly awesome impending victory (and probably a following reign of terror) to do all the talking.
at least, that's where i'm sitting. maybe he'll spin some kind of yarn about how he's so Jesus-like that even demons obey him, but i think he's beyond such deceptions these days.
edit - yeah, that's the kanji for 'demon' alright... some cases it might be 'a spirit' but, well... most often it's used for evil demons, especially when it's War Demon Army. Yeah. Griffith's got balls like Tiger Woods.

What do you mean: "not that special?" I'd imagine Locus and Grundbeld are exceptional even amongst the apostles to earn positions as unit leaders of their own specialized squads.
Also, never imagined that Irvine's apostle form would look like what it does. Thought it'd be more like one of the more surreal type of apostle seen during the Eclipse event. Makes me wonder if Griffith will take on Godhand form to battle wacky-inflatable-tubearm-emperor.

Bagandscalpel makes a rare appearance.
I hope all those humans following Griffith die. Thats why I hate religious coots who go on and on about faith, any logical thinking person would know somethings up. The reason they thought Guts was evil was because he was always involved with monsters, the fact that he was fighting them didn't make any difference because everywhere he went monsters showed up.
But here we have a man thought to be long dead suddenly appear out of nowhere calling himself the Hawk of Light and he has a freaking army of Demons, and she just says "so what if they're monsters" and thats it.
What a load of crap, and you know whats funny. They're shouting sorceress sorceress and the pope is right there. Doesn't the church hunt sorceresses down and burn them:D
masamuneehs
Sun, 11-30-2008, 09:23 AM
well, yeah, of course it's ridiculous hypocrisy for the church... but then again, the facts Sonya pointed out are undeniable: the monsters are fighting to protect the people of Midland (for now).
besides, what are their options right now, really? They're going to have to follow Griffith's excellent orders just to survive this battle, even with the demon army taking the brunt of the assault. there will be plenty of time for grumbling and religious fervor after they battle ends...
but i've got a feeling that, yes, by and large the people (particularly the Pope) are going to buy all of this crap and throw away all their pre-existing religious values and thoughts on magic in a bus-sized plot hole. but, we'll see...

Well he did use in in vol 25 was it? When he saved Guts from the wicked hot god hand in the troll cave. I think he showed the Behelit Sword to Guts one time before that as well, just to brag about his mad skills, might have been somewhere around the time Griffith was born unto the world again (I might be totally wrong about that one though)...
But god dang what a chap, as you said Kai, totally unexpected, and a serious feeling of cliffhanger, one feeling that Berserk had not given in a long time. Not that Griffith is gonna die, and even if the human form of Griffith did die, the battle would not be over until Guts went to hell and ripped Griffith's guts out.

I must say that is a savvy way to become the saviour of the world. I mean, since he can control all monsters, then in that case he is the ideal leader of the world. The thing is, that he is a major cause of that (which most people have no idea of). As powerful as the Gutts crew is, its spurious to say whether or not they can change that. Although things would get interesting if Farneze can become an effective witch. We've already seen that he could be Skull Knight II. I say a good timeskip is needed soon.

Question: I watched the anime years ago. Should I read the manga from day one or just skip to where the anime ended?
Short answer is: Yes.
To elaborate a bit, the 3 first manga volumes are not included in the anime, only the first episode of the anime follows like a 3rd or less of the first volume of the manga. There are also a lot of details that they have cut out because it wasn't fit to put in an anime. Just fun things that makes the story more colorful.
But if those things don't interest you and you remember the anime well, then you could start from volume 9, because that's where the difference in the anime and the manga starts to show.

it's been awhile for me...
chapter 301:
i thought this chapter was actually a lot better the second time i read it. before i was really hoping for dialogue and plot advancement, but if you're just looking to see how Griffith is actually bringing together demons and humans (although he is responsible for their needing to co-exist...) it's almost moving. this would be a 'feel good end of a battle' chapter in just about every other anime/manga. shockingly, seeing what Griffith's done with his fate, i can't say it seems terrible at all. it almost makes you forget, makes you think maybe he isn't all bad... almost...
but we'll see.
chapter 302: only thoughts are, when this whole thing is finally finished, they NEED to make a full anime adaptation. chapters like this are just not the same with stills, even though some of the shots were impressive
chapter 303: excellent use of contrast shading in this chapter.(rendering the Behelit the exact same color as human flesh was a particularly nice touch) really well done. i particularly like the part about the emperor becoming completely paranoid about his own family, only to be justified in it. Griffith also pwns him in particularly regal, again almost sympathetic fashion. Excellent echoing of Gutts being 'blinded'. Skull Knight, you are without a doubt my favorite undead character in anything.
another chapter where Griffith almost seems too good to be true. the Skull Knight's emergence is used to throw another FUCK! wrench into the plot
chapter 304: manipulated by Griffith, the Skull Knight unwittingly has his one greatest power end up helping the God Hands he despises. you can hardly get him any closer to Gutts. Also, the Emperor becoming 'the door/light' is so reminescent of The Egg for the New World, it's almost redundant. however, the effect seems to have connected even normal people to the ethereal. Looks like Schiernke is going to be obsolete in a short bit...
chapter 305: overall, wow, they have been spending alot of time on Griffith's side of things, but i don't think it's bad. this whole development feels right epic and, really, is it so much different from focusing on the Heretics and the Egg of the New World characters from way back when? if they rushed through and were all, "oh yeah, Griffith manipulates Skull Knight to get the two worlds to merge" out of nowhere, it'd feel alot crappier, at least to me.
humans be fucked. What I liked about this chapter is the ending, which shows that, no matter how beautiful Griffith is and how elegant and breathtaking everything he does is, he's still a bastard he doesn't care one iota for anything else. it pretty much is a slap for idiots like myself who were going all, "man, Griffith is doing some really good deeds". Of course he is, because HE'S going to benefit most from it.
I really am interested to see what happens with the 'new world' and Gutts' 'inner demon'. Can't imagine that it's going to be any easier controlling it now... I took the ending to be a sign that they will be getting back to Gutts shortly. Of course, that's who i want to read about first, but this last arc was really pretty good.
i think rockmanj is right. once they get to Elfheim, they'll have to deal with some of the new issues about the worlds being merged, (read: at least 8 chapters) but after that, a timeskip would seem to fit perfectly.
ah, stockpiling chapters of Berserk to be read all together is truly my favorite way of doing it

Weird designs, indeed. Why, there's Ubik having a spot of tea with a group of chaps in the garden of earthly delights.
Also, Void's spread is surprisingly impressive given that it's just a giant brain.

fuckin beautiful chapter. can never have too much Berserk indeed.
thoroughly enjoyable no-plot vision feast. I too particularly thought the two page spreads of the Godheads were striking.

mother of god, these double-page spreads are exhausting to look at. absolutely beautiful.
i love the note at the bottom of 307, about Miura forgetting it was the anniversary of Berserk, when it was even the 20th anniversary.
that pirate is motherfucking tenacious. he's a pretty entertaining character, because he's so crude but somehow almost admirable in it. i would have preferred him and his actual crew continuing to chase Gutts, but Zombie/Ghost ships/pirates has to be one of the most played out gimmicks...

I'd say we're in for the long-haul of played out gimmicks in Neo Fantasy Earth.
That said, it's true that it's a standard ghost-ship, but with Guts prepping his megabuster, the next few chapters should be anything but.

Why do all the new monsters look like vaginas and buttholes?
On another note I so wish I could see the pirate captain animated. This whole show deserves a complete remake for at least 150 episodes. But I guess Berserk fever has died down over the years..

No, actually there's been demand apparently for an anime, and there are plenty of funds and animators available to do it. Its actually Miura holding them back, he's probably afraid of the any anime catching up and having to stop, like the last series did. But I agree, what confuses me is when Miura says he doesn't know where he wants the anime to pick up from; why not the beginning?

Evil Genius also released a "correction" of two pages from the previous chapter
http://www.evil-genius.us/
Unfortunately, these "fixes" are even more loopy and awkward than the original TL... I do appreciate their work (the stupid references in 311 are thoroughly presented, then explained in a TL note), but they always seem to make some very silly mistakes...
311:
i can never stop appreciating the way Miura draws landscape. the last frame was just so Berserk...
Isi perving on the spooky girl and "mystery" abounds. Mini-arc here we come...
next chapter is Feb 26

Berserk chapter 312 is out by Franky House
This Arc Greatly disappoints. It seems like it's gonna be interesting, and in some ways it's gonna be a way of showing the transition between the normal way of life to the demon being integrated into peoples lives. However, They should have reached Elfheim like ages ago, it's as if the creator himself is uncertain which line the manga will take when they are there since it's a pivotal step in the storyline.

There's nothing certain about her, the way Schierke sees her Isma is connected somehow to the water element, but that's all we can tell really.
Is she the old sea god herself? maybe, but then again why would she treat Isidro the way she did in front of her *own* cave?
Is she a good water element spirit? she seems too... well, girlish for an ages old spirit with vast knowledge of the world.
Guess we'll just have to wait (again -.-) and see.
But more importantly... REACH ELFHELL ALREADY !
