I decided to start a Hip Hop thread, even though there probably arent many who listen to it on this forum, or so it seems. Basically you can talk about what your listening to right now and stuff.
Im listening to Kanye West a lot right now, The College Dropout is the best album in a while. His lyrics are off the chain too.
He can be serious, "I get down for my grandfather, who talk my momma, made her sit in that seat where white folks aint want us to eat!...."
And funny, "I dont know whats better, gettin laid or gettin paid, but when im getting one the other ones gettin away..."

I would have to say that everyone will agree that tupac is the best rapper that ever lived... that is a fact...
and most new stuff right now dont have the flare the old people have... like the g-unit I liked them...
I'm actucally enjoying d12 album... i mean it is very very racist all around... but theres just something to them that i like. probably cause its eminem.. (which i consider 2nd best artist next to tupac)
See someone like Jin he can freestyle but i wouldnt say can rap

haha I second that. I thought he was going to be really good when he signed with Ruff Ryders but it turns out hes way better at freestyling than rapping.
So what are your guys favorite songs? I would say mine is Crossroads by Bone Thugs cuz I use to listen to it alot when i was 6. Pretty meaningful too.

Well I think one reason behind jin's first single to be "LEARN chinese" is cause well he is the first official chinese rapper. and he is out there supporting the chinese community. but its all good. alot of my friends know jin personally.

Yeah i heard that too. His flow is sick, they had him rap in the studio & recorded it then had to play it back for a professional speech therapist who figured out how many syllables he made in the rap within a certain time.

Yes toungue twista is the fastest rapper. I heard him freestyle once and could not believe it.
Anyway, I am not into mainstream rap or I should say Crap with all the bling bling and shit.
I like old school like Tribe called quest, Cypress Hill, Naughty By Nature, Ghetto Boyz, EPMD, Wu-tang, Bone Thugz is good too!
And as for new rappers I like The roots, J5, and Mos Def.
And what's with this Tupac is the best rapper bullshit?? He is good but there are plenty better IMO.
Check out some of the aforementioned.

Twista's album is alright, the first 2 songs are real good, and the ones produced by Kanye, but then it goes downhill from there. i live in florida now (i used to live in ma so im mostly into east coast rap) and all they play is this southern garbage, all they rap about is 24s, money, and hoes. i know they do in almost all rap but people like Kanye, Jay Z, Tupac etc etc always have almost all real lyrics on their albums except for a couple songs. i cant stand southern rap, it all sounds the same, and its too dam hot down here!

well im not really into underground. i listen to mixtapes and all that, but i like to listen to people who have made it. im not saying theres people out there who werent good or even great, but to make it in the rap game you need to have the lyrics, the voice, and most of all the drive. D12 is a joke i dont like them no more they spend way to much time being funny instead of spitting real shit.

I may be part of a small crowd that starting to see rap as recycled crap TODAY. I must stress the word today because its much different than Run DMC or Kool and the Gang or Jurassic 5. MUCH DIFFERENT.
These days, its usually 3-4 guys comin out rapping on an individuals album. everysong on someone like Ludacris's album features mystikal or lil' john or someone of that nature. They rap about the same things, such as big bootys, bling, and hatas drinkin hatarade and recycled crap like that. While its ok to have 1 or 2 songs featuring another rapper/R&B artist, dont fill the whole CD with it.
Eminem raps with emotion. He tells a story when he raps. Sure it may be strongly violent, but at least it has heart, unlike 95% of rap these days. I understand that Eminem is a part of D12, but I dont like D12 nearly as much as I like Eminem, the solo rapper.
50 cent was decent, but the "I got shot 9 times" angle got old fast, then he came out with G-Unit. Great, more crap.
Some ignorant idiots may jump to the conclusion that I'm a racist, and that I like the white guy as opposed to all black guys. My main thing with RAP music is material, and Eminem has reinvented himself in each album.
Hopefully, I've opened a whole new can of worms to the discussion here. Not talking from an artist standpoint, but from an overall perspective.

apparently you didnt notice that I mentioned the likes of RUN DMC among other groups that formed hip-hop and brought it mainstream. I like Dr. Dre, but never cared all that much for Pac or Biggie Smalls.
I will say that I'm a person who likes all types of music. I could listen to Eminem, and then play some Staind or Blink 182 or even John Mayer. But I've been aware of the rap game long enough to make a fair opinion about it.

i used to love dr dre when i was like 14. this was in the days of chronic. it hurt to see him drop the signature west coast style and do more commercial stuff after that album. same goes for snoop dogg. i don't know, maybe i just don't like high profile music? i never liked 2pac. i always thought he was boring. same goes for biggie. i think their 'duel' made them bigger rappers than they were.
i need to get something off my chest, you don't have to read
- wu tang clan rant -
my all time favorite rapper, and lyricist, is gza, by far. that guy still makes the same kinda music that he used to make back in '95. yet, it's never boring. i mean, tell me you STILL don't like 'liquid swords', and i'll call you a big chubby liar! i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif ah, the wu-tang of the mid-nineties.. that's rap at it's best. NOTHING will ever top the solo and group albums that came out in the period between '93 and '98. their second album (best cd ever compiled, imo) put an end to a wonderful saga. then they started making crap music, and rza lost all creativity. every now and then, he'd make something decent (like 'ghost dog' soundtrack), but overal, he just got really boring. despite the bad reviews, i absolutely LOVE his first album. it has some dark, monotone, depressing feel to it. especially 'kiss of the black widdow pt1', but that might be because of the portishead sample. portishead = depressing. 'the w' and 'iron flag' had some nice tracks, but it just felt too commercial and poppy to me, as a whole. the best example is inspecta deck. the fiercest rapper to walk the earth. that guy went from being the emperor of rap to that half assed, shit stained, crap tainted excuse for an album, 'the movement'. that crap of a cd sounds like it was made in magix music maker, on a laptop, with a built-in mic. ooooh, the scar that that album left in me.. i used to like raekwon and ghostface killah before, in the 'ironman'/'only built for cuban lynx' days. even 'supreme clientelle', i have to admit - that album owned the fuck out of me. there's even a nice 'fuck you' note for 50 cent in one of the skits (this was eons before 50 cent was famous, that's actually where i first heard of him). anyway, ghost and chef got all blingy with time and it started to piss me off. every picture in the cd sleeve would have one of them smiling with golden teeth and rings and watches and whatnot. i mean, you fuckers are the fathers of this genre - we know you're rich! their last albums were crap, at least compared to the first few. 'bulletproof wallaz' (one version of the name) had like 3 decent tracks. masta killa. i haven't been snooping around about hiphop lately, so i don't know if his solo album finally came out. i hear a couple of tracks and i liked it. this guy is pure rhyme. one of the few rappers on the planet who are actually worth 'listening' to. he doesn't rap in rythm, or make weird woopty-woop noises. here's an example from the best rap song, imo i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif "the light is provided through sparks of energy from the mind that travels in rhyme form, giving sight to the blind. the dumb are mostly intrigued by the drum. death, only one can save self from, this relentless attack of the track spares none" (hope i got it right). i once heard method man do a 30 minute freestyle (i have the clip, i think, if anyone wants it) and i was bowing down to the master. then he met puff daddy. and he made crap movies. so now i don't like him as much as before. 'bring the pain' is TEH POPPA of half the songs you hear today. u-god has crappy lyrics, but his voice and tact are great. uh, that's about it. odb.. eh.. the guy is just.. god. craziest fucking idiot on the planet earth. it's hard to hate him for selling out, he's just too fucking cool for school.
that's my ode to wu tang. it was nice while it lasted, and i'm glad it was happening when i liked hiphop the most. but i guess i grew out of it, eminem and 50 cent just don't do it for me. all they do is whine and show off at the same time, from my point of view. but to each his own.
i suggest (no, i STRESS) that you hiphop liking guys get 'honest expression' by this little group called binarystar. it has a clever bruce lee sample in it. very low budget cause the guys have no label, and aren't looking for one. oh, that rocks my boat i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif

shadowmantis, thank you for understanding the overexploded concept of Biggie and 2pac. And what bothers me is that people still make albums with them. 2pac even had a movie, cmon. Just die already. Their presence in rap today personally takes away from whatever aura they had before they died, its ridiculous.
heres what bothers me the most about rap (besides all of the commonality these days)
shadowmantis talks about the Wu Tang Clan, and what he liked/didnt like about 'em. Wu Tang Clan is OK, thats a group, their albums are meant to have multiple person(s) rapping in a song. But as I mentioned before, a guy like Ludacris, a rapper who makes an album and puts ONLY his name on it, may only perform half as much as anybody else on that album. The reason I like Eminem (minus D12) is he can make, in my opinion, a good CD, with about 90% of the rhymes coming from his own mouth. He does have the occasional "featuring" song, but thats fine by me. In other words, what I'm saying: Make your own damn album, is that too fucking hard for you?
When I first posted here, I wasnt hoping for a battle of the artists. I was hoping people would start discussing other aspects, such as the material and substance of the rap game today.

if those words can come out of your mouth, then you don't even know what rap is. the thing about 2pac that made him so popular and great was not his actual rapping ability (i can say that others are better), but the way he delivered his lyrics in such a powerful way. hearing you say this kind of stuff makes me think that the 2pac songs you've heard of are: changes, cali love, and thug mansion.
EDIT: chambers, tell me which albums you have. and nwa and 2pac were totally different generations man... nwa is the founder of gangster rap. you don't compare anyone with them. and no, he did not pretend to be a gangster... everyone else did and does, 2pac is as real as it gets.

yeah sure, ive got a few albums. the reason he was so good was because he pretended to be a gangster and did it with style. you compare him to a group like the NWA ( i know a bit unfair they were a group) and see who has the better or more hard hitting lyrics.

so you can take it from that i dont think hes some kind of god. what i was saying is that stan is probly the single original song and its his best by miles because the way he choses to deliver it is unique and original, its like a book with a twist in the end.

i see. i guess if you look at it from that angle, it looks original. how i see it, is that he keeps bitching about being too famous all the time, and can't stop talking about it. it's either something concerning his fame, or mother. so the song didn't strike me as original. i do see your point.

why does it matter if someone else raps that with saying bitch, fuck, n-bomb, ho, and/or glock? does it make any less meaningful? absolutely not. as long as you get your message across, i'm ok with it.

this is a thread about hiphop. if you read what i write, you'd notice that i'm comparing the old music to the new one. can you point me to a post where i was acting like you are right now? if you haven't noticed 'imo' that i put in almost every post, it means 'in my opinion'. also, there was disclaimer about not having to read it, in my previous post (about 'my favorite rapper').
and to make it perfectly clear, i'm not starting anything. on discussion board, you discuss the topic. not just post 'yeah hiphop ruuullzzzz!!!'. i respect everyone's likings, and i merely state how >i feel< about the same rapper. you're not open for my opinion. i'd prefer if you try to avoid reading my posts, and vice versa, until you chill.
mut@t@ - very true. but, i think the quality of the message is also important. i mean, kids listen to this. isn't it better if they hear proper grammar and stuff, instead of slang and a curse word ever 3 seconds? i'm all for good messages, but 'P.I.M.P.' doesn't really carry one, does it? i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif

ah, i was going for something else i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif like saying they're talking about the same stuff as other rappers, only in a different, more thought provoking way.
twist.. hmm.. damnit, but i can't remember the name of the song. it's on nas' "i am.." album, where he goes on about catching his girl cheat on him, and it gets out of hand at the end. that's a great album, first cd i ever bought. hehe, i'm oldschool with tapes.
also, again, wu tang's "tearz"
gravediggaz - diary of a madman
warren g - regulate
maybe dmx - stop being greedy? hm, maybe not. good song, either way
edit:
got it, it's nas - undying love
yet another edit:
speaking of original, anyone know 'secret wars' by last emperor?

lol man ofcourse i didnt read your long as hell rants, just skimmed through. and to me it looked like you were comparing one rapper's lyrcis to anothers, which is why i said rapper vs rapper, because thats how you came off to me. i am chill, so please dont tell me to chill because thats just straight up annoying. also do you only listen to music that has a 'message'? i dont, i listen to all sorts of rap, i dont expect every song on an album to have a message, i like to hear funny shit like P.I.M.P. too. to me a rapper shouldent care if a kid might hear his song, he writes to express himself anyway he wants. if the parent isnt there to regulate what their kid is listening to then thats not the rappers fault its just not his responsibility. you can cleary see a PARENTS ADVISORY warning on the album. proper grammar? are you serious? to me, i dont want to hear no bs, i listen to rap because its real, inspiring, and i can relate to it.

that's why they have the EXPLICIT LYRICS sticker on the cd's. if the dumbass kids somehow convince their even more dumbass parents to buy that album for them and the kids cry about the bad words, then oh well. sucks to be them. like i said, i don't really care about the music lately. i am with you about it being only about 20's, hoes, money, and other crap. like i said, 90's was when rap music was at its best.

well, you bring up a lot of new subjects.
the message.. it's not about 'a higher good' or something really smart that some guy says in a song that attracts me. when 'artists' are trying to get something across, i'd rather have them back it up with decent and intelligent lyrics, than use slang that only proves they haven't finished college. i suppose you like 'thug' and ganksta style, where you hear about the streets and life in the ghetto. see, i do too. but if i hear it in broken english, it loses all value to me. of course, i like the easy listening, more innocent songs. but i have talib kweli, for example. the guy is witty, sharp, smart and not caught up in pimping ho's and stuff. i'd hear a club song from time to time, yeah. but most of the time, something with a message, as you put it, can inspire me a lot better. i can't draw any inspiration from, let's say, "wankster".
i'll see if i can expain why i don't like cursing. the state of music today is, in my HUMBLE opinion, terrible. i'm at work, at 10am, and i hear 'fuck you, you ho, i dont want you back' on radio. i wouldn't mind that song, if they didn't play it in the middle of the day. everyone knows only teens and younger people watch mtv, vh1 and other music channels, yet they keep uncensoring things. it's dumbing people down, you have kids running around, acting stupid and disrespecting older people and other people's property. i just feel like it's bad influence, as simple as that. i have a younger sister, and she's into r&b and hiphop and whatever. i don't want her to run around half naked, because tv told her lil kim is perfect and she should be like her.
it probably sounds like i'm getting old, but it's just that i saw hiphop when it was starting, and it was very different. i don't like the change to all this cursing and idolizing. i don't know, maybe you just haven't heard the groups i listen to?
that's why they have the EXPLICIT LYRICS sticker on the cd's. if the dumbass kids somehow convince their even more dumbass parents to buy that album for them and the kids cry about the bad words, then oh well. sucks to be them.
is there a parental advisory sticker on your tv? or your radio? or magazine? i really don't care about how they express theirselves, but about hearing that stuff in the middle of the day. does anyone have any decensy left nowadays?

real quick: when people buy tv's, radios, and mags, they are completely responsible for the content that comes with it. if they want to live in a sheltered life then they can live like that family from blast from the past.
i dunno know what radios and magazines (i don't listen to the radio and i don't buy mags), but tv's they have the rating on the top right (left?) corner. it doesn't stay there throughout the whole program but it's shown during the opening intro and right after the program returns from commercial. i don't know if there are other ways of doing that but it's all up to whoever's in charge of it to show the us the rating without spending more money on it... so i'm not gonna talk about that. but why do you bring up common courtesy? if a child is flipping through channels and hears a cuss word or reference to someone getting shot and cries about it, why should anyone but besides the kid and the parent take blame? the parents should know that there are this kind of stuff on tv so they should tell their kid not to watch it and use a feature on their tv to block off channels. if they don't have that feature, then no tv for kids. i think it ultimately comes down to bad parenting and the kids being stupid.
and dude, if someone (not talking about your baby sis) is running around half naked just because tv told her lil kim was prefect and she should be like her, that girl is an IDIOT. she should have more common sense, be a TINY bit more strong minded and have some self esteem. if she is a young girl, then her parents should do something about it instead of bitching at the tv for their kid turning out all screwed up. HEY PARENTS, SOMETIMES IT'S YOUR'S AND YOUR CHILD'S FAULT TOO. the parents are sooo scared of being labled 'bad parents' that they can't even fathom the idea that they fucked up on some things. there are no perfect parents so they should learn from their dumb mistakes and learn to correct it. not only that, the parents are always like 'oh, my child can't be messed up, she's perfect and i'm sure this rebellious rap/rock/etc culture has jacked her up.' no, you stupid parents... there is a slight chance that your child is a fuck up straight out of the womb. and dude, you make it sound like cuss words aren't censored (besides bitch/ass).
NOTE: i'm not trying to flame people or anything. i am a jolly man.

ill tell you suttin right now, all my little cousins listen to hip hop and love it, and listen to unedited cds. and none of them are walkin around swearing or any shit like that. why? it always comes down to the parents, my aunts/uncles let them listen to rap, just like they do, but that doesnt mean theyll let my cousins swear and disrespect older people. theyre young right now, so theyll be learning swears anyway, just like everybody does. you complaining about swearing in rap is just dumb, for one you dont have to listen to it, if you dont like what they play on the radio pop in a cd of what you like.

none of you know anything about underground hip hop - fact, and your opinions on mainstream are garbage.
2pac didnt suck. he was one of the best to ever do it. - not many rappers have half the content in their entire careers as one pre-mortem 2pac album. me against the world is possibly the best cd ever made.
Jay-Z is good, quit hatin. reasonable doubt is untouchable. and most of his other cds are good too.
eminem is highly over-rated. hes basically ICP now.
he had 1 good mainstream cd, and that was his "debut" release which was basically a modified version of his underground EP with some dre songs on it, and his underground EP was just a bunch of singles he put out over a couple years all put together on one cd. his "re-inventions" of himself all get worse and worse with every album. thats the thing about rappers - you dont re-invent yourself for every cd, you have your schtick, and you stick with it till the end. his last cd was absolute garbage.
ALL southern rap doesnt suck. TI is possibly one of the best rappers out right now, its too bad hes in jail so he cant promote his shit or put out a follow up. seriously, 24's was made for commercial success, rubberband man is a good song if you listen to the lyrics, and the rest of his CD is damn good.
Mos Def is Most Deffinetely the best rapper in it right now. if you dont like mos def, then you are gay.
hes got to be the only emcee i ever heard who can be consistantly conscience without being whiney. he can freestyle over any beat, has the most versatile style, tight lyrics and metaphores, and he has good beats. check out "respiration" - one of the most metaphorical and socially aware songs made without being gay or militant. and he does it on a regular basis.
as far as underground hip hop goes, none of you know anything about it. the only underground artists your gonna see on tv are blackstar - jurrasic 5 isnt underground, the black eyed peas isnt underground, triple 6 mafia isnt underground.
underground is def jux records.
underground is eastern conference records.
underground is defari, the barbershop emcees, and dilated peoples(evidence killed eminem on searching for bobby fisher)
the thing about it is, theres way too many artists too even mention to list for REAL underground. not that fake commercial shit you hear on your radios and see on mtv claiming to be underground.
underground is pretty much just rappers who dont have the lyrics to appeal to a commercial audience, not the lack of talent to appeal. hence underground.
if you like ANY puff daddy, nelly, chingy, cash money or other bullshit bling bling non-rappin ass rappers then you dont need to be posting in this thread.
i dont know if any of you have actually been in a street where any of this stuff actually goes down, so let me tell you - swearing and slang are more than just lyrics in a song, bitching about it in songs that come from people who grew up in these places, and are talking about their lifes or telling storys about said places is just retarded, and you should smack your retarded self right now.
(pause for you to smack yourself)
now that thats done, realize this - that half nakedness and bad language you dont like is common place in actual streets, your pissed because you see this happening to people you know - but its been that way in places like whitehaven and orange mound for about 3 or 4 decades now. your hero talib kweli came from the same shit, he just says it in a different way - thats his choice. he's anti-cycle, most rappers are pro-cycle because its been good to them. some rappers are split on it (TI, 2pac).
you just dont know your hip-hop.
end rant.

I don't disagree with you Samanosuke, but if you read all the posts, you will see that most of what you said, was already said. That's why I'm not even interested in putting my voice in this, because it's just gon keep going in circle. But I do have to say this though, you can't judge people for what they like, I mean, you take Biggie, 2pac, jay-z, cam'ron, DMX, mosdef (not even mosdef, blackstar), and a whole bunch of other,....., what they say or used to say in their lyrics is so true that people who through the shit they're talking about can identify themself in it. Now, if a person can't identify him/herself in it, then they gon be like wtf they talking about, and they will tend to like other kinds of rap.

Concentric, it's not because you like something that what other people like is the worst, because by thinking this way, you're just being ignorant. I'm not saying you can't say your opinion, because you're free to do whatever you want, but it's not right to criticize other people. I don't like underground rap that much, but I still like it, what I like the most are mixtapes, but it doesn't mean that mixtapes are the best, it's just I like remixes and freestyles better than underground.

Fair enough, I'm just stating musically, lyrically and subtance-wise what many people here are rating as being "good hip-hop" are poor, I'm sure in terms of being jiggy, gangsta whatever on the level they probebly come up spades. Anyway, I dislike the term underground, it's so cliched. Everything i mentioned was either major label or independent.
shadowmantis - hehe mad, i didn't expect anyone to listen to those two in particular. You herd the new Illogic album? It's probebly one of my fav albums this year.

Damn this thread got big... I stopped listening to Hip Hop a while ago mainly because everyone is talking about money, hoes, etc. and i find all that stuff overrated and repetive when everyone is rapping about it. Also the new songs with the catchy phrases that people keep singing is just so damn annoying IMO. Last time I listened to Hip hop was probably when Thugz Mansion was on the radio. Gotta love Tupac, his lyrics were mostly about the harsh realities of life and it brings me up when I feel down. Bone Thugz did the same although Tupac is my fav. rapper of all time. Just my lil peice of opinion.

Yeah thats whats ruining hip-hop. Seriously dude, download Common - I Used To Love H.E.R. and a few of the other songs I listed (i really recommend out of the list i posted the louis logic song, the roots song and the blackalicious one). I think it may change your mind about hip-hop.

my personal favorites are Copywrite, Jakki Da Motamouth, Cage, Canibus, MHz, Weathermen, Immortal Technique, Atmosphere, Ikon The Verbal Hologram(Jedi Mind Tricks), Warbux, and Eminem
Copywrite is at the top of my list right now, if you haven't listened to his songs before I highly suggest you do. Copywrite is a battle emcee that has crazy wordplay and punchlines.

Nas was good, illmatic, arguably the best hip-hop record ever, but then all the rest of his cd's were either average or mediocre. I still can listen to Illmatic anytime though, still classic. Same with Mobb Deep, they still have some sick songs.
Big L is the man though - "As beavis, I get nothing 'Butt' 'Head'" thats gotta be one of the all time classic punchlines
As for Az, i haven't herd much, i've flicked through one of his cd's, i can't remember the name, i wasn't impressed. But his verse on Life A Bitch is killer.

OH shit, just saw this thread and read it all the way thru for a change (I was lookin for new shit to download). Guess i have to put my 2 cents in on the Tupac/Biggie thing: I gotta saw I'm a Biggie fan, but I think Tupac is alright (Anybody heard deadly combination w/ him, biggie and big L) I don't think he's the best, even if hes a legend. BUt as for the best rappers/groups (in my opinion)
Slick Rick
Outkast (all of their stuff is great, even though their older stuff (Stankonia and before) is the best
Digable Planets (REBIRTH OF SLICK!)
Tribe Called Quest (I can't believe nobody has said anything about them!)
The Roots
De La Soul
Beastie Boys
Talib Kweli, Mos Def
Jedi Mind Tricks
Big L (def one of the best ever: EBONICS)
DEAD PREZ (WTF is wrong with u guys?)
Anyway, it seems like everyone here thinks that once people get successful, they suck, and that all rap really has to be really deep to be good, but I think that even the most commercial shit can be good (even if it usually isnt) like some of those club bangaz are good songs u can listen to (ie Clipse)
Oh yeah, and Jay Z is good too (better than Nas) hahahaha

If you need something to search for, get into Jean Grae. She's good for you Brooklyn hip-hop fans (Talib, Mos Def, etc). Blackstarr (Talib + Mos Def doing Neo-Soul) is nice, as is Blackilicious. For shit you probably haven't heard of, get some Souls of Mischief or Del tha Funkee Homosapien, and some Hieroglyphics; all of these are on Del's label Hiero. And give Handsome Boy Modeling School a try, nice stuff there - Prince Paul and Dan the Automator producing songs featuring everyone from Jack Johnson to RZA w/ Mars Volta, Mike Patton (as in Faith No More/Dillinger Escape Plan singer), Del with Dave from De La Soul, Grand Puba and Sadat X, and so on. Grab anything Guru from Gangstarr did solo, all Jazz/Soul/R&B fusions, especially Street Soul. Dr. Octagon has some phenominal beats, too. GZA's most recent cd isn't bad, I also like the new Ghostface. Babu from Dialated Peoples has a series of CDs called Hunting Season (I think that's the name) that's nice as well.

Black Star (Talib Kweli and Mos Def), Dilated Peoples, The Roots, 2pac, Jay-Z, Biggie, and Nas can all make good music. The name God's Son has nothing to do with Nas though. Illmatic is the only album of his that I really like.

Loyal to the Game took over its all im listening to right now. i liked snoop's cd i like to hear something different instead of the same shit over and over ie. eminem and g-unit. if you havent heard pac's song with elton john then download it immediately its called Ghetto Gospel, i love the way the chorus is elton john singing with his piano then when it goes to pac's verse the beat drops hard its friggin tight.

Better Dayz was nothing but B-sides and other material Pac recorded during the Makaveli days, there was a good 2 CDs worth of stuff he did then. I didn't even bother with this new CD. I'm still absorbed in a lot of rock waiting on some new albums to drop right now, not much in the mainstream I'm really looking forward to as of current. December is bigger for DVDs, anyways.

i dont like southern rap enough to buy it, but ill admit its alright. living in tampa now its all they play and it isnt bad, its more fun music, its meaningless, and not worth buying for me. ludicrius isnt bad though, the decision to go with another usher song for his first song was stupid imo.

edit: if anyone has heard loyal to the game then you know 2pac gives shoutouts to jadakiss, g-unit, 50 cent, and obie trice, and also says 2005 on one of the songs. theyve already said when he says jada he is referring to jada pinkett smith his bestfriend, but what about the others?

yeah i think its one of the best posthumous 2pac albums in a while.
did anyone watch the grammys, i thought hiphop was totally fucked in that award show, what was up with giving best new artist to maroon 5 who werent even up for best album, over kanye west who was up for best rap album AND album of the year, and why did they show all that boring country music shit, as if those redneck motherfuckers even watch the grammys. and lets face it, if ray charles hadnt died he wouldent have gotten all the grammys he was awarded, not tryin to hate on ray, but cmon...

i wont say hip hop is dead, theres still a lot of good hip hop.

DMX? Are you kidding? I am a pretty big DMX fan I think he sucked more every time he released an album. It's Dark and Hell is Hot is one of my favorite albums. DMX's second album was also good. But after that, it just started sucking.
Rap was at its best from mid 90's to late 90's. That was the epitome of rap.

i don't know people hate eminem so much, he is a good lyracist i like him, mainly his old stuff and unrealesed stuff, his new stuff aint nothing really, some good songs here there, but he usually does good featurings.
but the best rapper of all time for me is Notorious B.I.G, i think he's awesome, his voice, lyrics, beats, everything.

It doesnt matter if underground or commercial if you are good.
shadowmantis
Sat, 02-26-2005, 11:05 PM
im pretty sure many underground artists would kill to be signed with a major label. still, there's a few of them who are happy with what they're doing. i think everyone should check illogic, just for the fact that he does what he likes. his lyrics have a meaning, they are "deep" and you can receive them in a different way every time. whoever calls himself a pimp in a song (and is being serious about it) loses whatever interest i had in hearing his music.
all in all, there's shit underground music, yes. but you can find more talent and meaningful texts in that scene, than in top 40. fucking pimps and gangstas.
chambers
Sun, 02-27-2005, 02:26 PM
im not sure abotu talent..... just because someone can rap with more deep and meaningfull lyrics doesnt mean he has more talent. but there are defo more deep and meaning full songs in the underground than in the top 40. in any country. in almost any type of music.
SK
Wed, 03-02-2005, 04:42 PM
it really all depends on what type of rap you like, if you like more political rap than gangsta rap youll probably prefer underground. even if you dont like commerical rap check out the game's documentary, its a classic in my opinion. after hearing all the drama about 50 vs everyone i like the game even more for seperating himself from 50 and sayin he was never really part of g-unit. g-unit wanted the game so they can get street cred because there all softies.
