Yo Munsu and Ryllharu, 5 bucks if you add your thoughts to that chart :D

Oh no! My secret chart revealed!
Just kidding...
While I'm pleasantly surprised at how some what I would consider niche titles made it to the list, it doesn't change that quite a few of the titles seem mis-categorized.
Noein...I would be extremely hesitant to recommend to anyone. Calling it a drama is a stretch at best, it is hardcore sci-fi but it should be in the same category as Dennou Coil...and Higurashi should be in the same category as Monster. Noein has a very unique art style (like Gankutsuou) and the plot just really isn't there to call it a drama. Chrono Crusade belongs in Drama. Kanon and AIR are missing here too. Where the hell is NANA and Paradise Kiss?
Actually, I'd say the Drama category is pretty much a mess altogether. Half belong in Sci-Fi, and a lot of the rest need to be put into a separate category altogether ("Fan-girl Shoujo" maybe)
Clannad a comedy? No.
Mahoraba ~heartful days~ is missing from comedy.
I'm disappointed to not see Soukou no Strain in Sci-Fi, a really stand-out title that came out of nowhere.
Haibane Renmei I'd put in Slice of Life.
Lain....I would skip. It is one of those series that really stood out for it's time, but it has aged horribly. An overwhelming number of series (on that chart alone) totally overshadow it. Where is Narutaru Shadow Star instead?
Romance...I would put Ai Baby in there, Itazura na Kiss, and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. Lack of Bokura ga Ita especially is shocking. ef, I"s (despite how much I hate it), Kimagure Orange Road, Onegai Teacher, and Suzuka (debatable).
Fantasy Adventure. Nanoha is an odd choice here. Appropriate, but strange. I am a huge Nanoha fan due to it's ability to appeal to both male and female viewers (it is the DBZ of Magical Girl anime), but I haven't had the opportunity to recommend it here. But they are missing Okusama wa Mahou Shoujo in terms of magical girl series.
No Beserk? Well, maybe that one I can understand, but it should be on there. Especially lacking is Record of the Loddoss War (the OVA). No Slayers as well?
Action. You knew it was coming...Hunter x Hunter. R.O.D (OVA and series), and some version of Mai Hime/Otome.
Sports. Where is Major or Slam Dunk?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I imagine this list intended to avoid more recent series, but they also created separate, too-specific categories (like Uber-Mecha) and were forced to include more recent titles.

I know itīs a bit vague, but:
What are some of the MUST-SEE shows of the past years?
I already saw the popular stuff like Death Note, Eureka Seven, Code Geass, Mushishi or Claymore. Whatīs there else, regardless of genre, as long as itīs just "great".
PS: And i still am looking for a romantic-anime like School Days, haha.

Is Mai Hime any good?
Mai Hime is a good action series. A little bit of ecchi, a healthy dose of drama, good animation and a decent amount of humor.
I know it´s a bit vague, but:
What are some of the MUST-SEE shows of the past years?
I already saw the popular stuff like Death Note, Eureka Seven, Code Geass, Mushishi or Claymore. What´s there else, regardless of genre, as long as it´s just "great".

Big anime, eh?
I don't know if you mean "must-see" like visionary anime (since you have Mushishi on there) or if you mean "must-see" as in everyone is watching it whether it really is that exceptional or not (since you have Death Note on there). I'll go with "Big Anime" that is also good.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and it's sequel were up there. Mystery, blood, cute characters and humor...just to make you feel that much worse about the murders.
Full Metal Alchemist...pretty obvious.
Full Metal Panic - Humor, mecha, non-mecha action, a little bit of love and a whole lot of awesome.
Berserk - Massive medieval epic that everyone was enjoying
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angst, more angst, mecha, a serious Oedipus complex, and more angst.
Mai Hime - see above.
Chrno Crusade - Demons and nuns are so much fun. Humor, drama, action. A lot like FMP, but without the mecha in exchange for demons and magic. Set in the 1920s.
Last Exile - Another one of those coming-of-age epic style series, but with courier pilots and a healthy dose of science fiction. Character models by an acclaimed artist.
Scrapped Princess - Good characters, "fantasy(?)" setting. A mix of magic, swordfighting, a whole lot of "what the hell is really going on" and a coming of age story, all animated wonderfully.
Darker than Black - A bit more of a niche series than the others, but definitely enjoyable. Again, lots of confusion about what is going on, superpowers, and...I don't really know what else. I just started watching it, and I am really confused...in a good way.
Bleach: Episodes 1-63 - Before the series got stale, and degenerated into fight after pointless fight and the plot repeated exactly (but few people noticed for some reason) a ton of people were watching this. The series had good humor mixed in with awesome action and an interesting visual style.
Ouran High School Host Club - At the time it was airing, easily the best comedy around. Pokes at the bishonen series sterotypes and is very amusing with great characters.
School Rumble - The best comedy around when it aired. Lots more humor, constant, "Everything that can go wrong, will" moments and horrible misunderstandings.
Monster - Haven't seen it, can't say much about it, but it's on here with good reason. Since I can't really describe it, I'm going to add some [added weight] to this part of the post for emphasis on it being on this list. It matches the five you've got up there in terms of following and depth.
Gurren Lagann - The finest classic-mecha in a long time. Neo-Classical Mecha?
Vision of Escaflowne - Girl sent to other world, meets boy. Boy has clockwork mech, intense battles ensue and drama abound.
Seirei no Moribito - Some select few around here would be most dissapointed if I didn't include this one. While it was not my particular flavor of anime, this was one series that was certainly a "must-see" in both versions I described above.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Romance Anime like School Days:
I don't think you'll find something quite like it, but there are a few that provoked a great deal of thought.
True Tears - Love triangle (occasional square) that had me going back and forth between which of the two were actually better suited. A lot of character development and the question of how well you really know someone, or are you just making assumptions, are addressed. While it was a bit "meh" in the middle, much like School Days was in the beginning (before you had a full grasp of the going ons) but the end makes up for it.
Saikano - Tragedy knows no truer name. Animation is of "lower quality," but that is just the visual style.
It also sounds like you should be watching Chaos;Head now if you already are not.

Wow, this series is bloody brilliant! I have no idea even up to now whats going on but I have to find out.

I think Ryullharu forgot to add
Minami-ke : Comedy.. really funny stuff (another season will come soon)
Fate/Stay Night Fantasy (?), dunno how to describe it, but it's really good. It's about Heroes from the past summoned by magi as "Servants" to find a magical vessel which is able to fullfill a wish... awesome love story and fighting scenes.
If you haven't seen it already, you should catch up... I think most people on this forum know how great this show (and game) is. It might not be the "best anime ever made" for everyone, but as I said, it's really, really good.
Spice and Wolf: It's a somewhat "new" kind of anime... again I don't know how to describe the genre, but I found it most interesting, haven't seen something similiar before.
Ookiku Furikabutte: Baseball... best sports anime out there imho
Chobits: Love Comedy... really "cute" stuff :P
Lucky Star: Comedy..
Kimikiss purerouge: Romance..nice animation
Beck: Music. About a young boy who gets into a band and their troubles on their way to "fame".. really nice music, famous songs from the beatles here and there and so on.
It is one of my favorites..
However I'm not sure when these animes came out exactly, some of them might be "new" (1 year old at max)

Code Geass, both Seasons can be considered a nice anime, the first season beating hands down the second.
The story of a fallen prince to an empire who with incredible wits and a power to have someone to obey him no matter what, tries to have the empire fall and take over the world.
Mechs, strategies, battle for power, C.C.....
Death Note before the time skip (to prevent from spoilers I won't say more)
A genius on earth stumbles upon a particular note book. If he writes a name in it with the image of the person in mind, said person dies. If details for way of dying are written, the scenario will play provided it's possible for the person to follow it.
A story about a guy who thought he was so good, wanted a better world and ends up... well you'll see.
Macross Frontier
Typical love triangle caught in a Space Opera. Worth watching for the many eyegams you may experience. It's useless to watch it with over compressed video files. Seek for HD files only (true ones)
Kamichu!
Tells the story of a young school teen girl who is a God. Nice and peaceful slice of life show, with a very nice feel to it.
Paradise Kiss
Tells the story of a teen girl entering the fashion world as a model for a young team of creators. Nice OST with nice images, overall nice to watch.
OAV: 5 centimeters per second
It's an animated movie, not a series. But it's worth watching.
I won't spoil it too much, it's about how life separates people eventhough they have feelings (but any description lacks a lot compared to the actual show you have to watch)
There are numerous other shows, but without any specifics the risk is to give to many answers that do not fit preferences. Eventhough at times, you can be caught from the left by a show you thought you'd never be interrested in...

I have to suggest "Black Cat", For those of you who don't know, its about an assassin of the infamous Chronos organization (they kindof own the word) named Train, who turned sweeper (Bounty Hunter) who teams up with a partner named sven. They are out for a meal ticket when they keep getting involved with another former chronos member who has mastered the power of chi. Theres alot of different weapons, powers, and comedy.

I like it how every anime invents a new name to call an hired-gun.
it's like someone says "sure, they fight and kill people, but it's okay, since they're sweepers\getbackers\grandeirs\travelers\space waiters from the future, but the people who they fight? they're bad people, they kill for money".

Hey, its been all throughout history, there will be even more, i mean i can think of one now, Throat Seeker, there ya go. However, they could be doing worse things with their killing talents, no one said it was a glamorous trade to be a bounty hunter or assassin, i wouldn't call them bad people though, but i guess it depends on the person. Either way, still a good Manga lol

The Black Cat anime sucked fifty meters long noodles and shouldn't be recommended to anybody in this thread. The Black Cat thread (http://forums.gotwoot.net/showthread.php?t=12729) is filled with naught but people complaining how bad the latter half of the show was (when it wasn't following the manga anymore but instead the script written by a five years old kindergartener).

Seconded. The Black Cat anime is garbage. The manga is the only thing worth reading, and is quite a deal better.
Both of Yabuki Kentaro's series got watered down and butchered when they were adapted to anime. (He did the art for To-Luv-Ru, but is not the author). It's a lot like Ken Akamatsu (Love Hina, Negima)

blahh. I always mix up black cat and getbackers. they're both the same piece of uninspired, go with the flow, do whatever feels right, crap.
and I listen to the same album while reading them, so I'm even more confused about the difference.
I'm looking for a short anime\ova to watch, preferably action, but can be anything that keeps me focused enough (watching ARIA is a bitch). something around two hours total, one or two parts (so I could split it comfortably).
any suggestions?

There aren't a whole lot of OVAs that are not tied to a series and aren't flat-out hentai. However, there are some really good ones.
Kara no Kyoukai is a good one for sure, especially if you've already seen Mnemosyne. It is a Type-Moon series (Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime) about a woman named Shiki who like the protagonist from Tsukihime, also posesses the Eyes of Death Perception. Anything she sees has certain lines on it, when those lines are cut, whatever it is, dies, usually into many pieces. The series jumps around a lot in time, but it all seems to be coming together in the 5th episode/movie, due out soon.
R.O.D: Of all OVAs not associated with a series that preceded it, Read or Die is among the best. Yomiko Readman is a bibliomaniac, but she also works for the British Goverment as one of their elite agents. Her particular talent is manipulating paper.
Iria: Zeiram the Animation: A story of a brother and sister bounty hunter, the series follows the sister, Iria, as she is drawn into conspiracies, ambushes, and jobs in pursuit of a serial killer known only as Zeiram. (Coincidentally, this is the first anime I ever bought, many years ago.)
Golden Boy: One of the pivotal series in comedy for many years, the series follows Kintaro Oe, the world's greatest student, on his perverted journey of knowledge and learning, meeting many a sexy lady along the way. Will he someday save the world?
Dominion Tank Police: A comedy/action series of sorts, follows a fiery police woman who destroyed her commanding officer's prized tank, only to cobble it back together to something only barely larger than a motorcycle, in pursuit of domestic terrorist catgirls.
FLCL: A young boy named Naota is hanging out with Mamimi, the girlfriend of Naota's absentee brother. Their relationship is an uneasy one, since Mamimi seems to enjoy teasing Naota quite a bit. Suddenly, their time together is interrupted by the arrival of a seemingly insane girl on a motorscooter. She runs over Naota and then whacks him in the head with her guitar...
[shamelessly copied from AniDB]
Karas: Shinjuku, the near future. A wave of multiple murders has hit, shocking even for this crime-wracked city. The victims are always drained of their body fluids ... and there is always a sole survivor. Behind the murders stands Ekou. For centuries, he was the Karas, the guardian of the town, but he no longer heeds the will of the city, and is intent on destroying it. There is only one hope for Shinjuku -- Otoha, the one who is to be the new Karas. He must now battle Ekou's forces to save the city and its inhabitants, be they human or youkai.
[again, shameless copied from AniDB]
Really beautiful animation here though.
Kite, Mezzo Forte, and Kite: Liberator: [ADULT CONTENT] The hentai aspects of these aside, there is some really excellent action in these three OVAs. All of them take place in the same universe, and there is a follow-up series to Mezzo Forte (usually called just Mezzo, or Mezzo DSA). The two Kite films deal with assassins as the protagonists, and Mezzo deals with a jack-of-all-trades trio, led by an cop forced out of the deptarment, and a female practitioner of Jeet Kune Do.
Macross Plus: Of all of the Macross series, this OVA probably has the best flight and combat scenes. No need to really see anything before or after this OVA, it is more than capable of standing on it's own. Takes place between Macross:SDF-1 and Macross 7 (but the animation far exceeds both due to the OVA budget). Test Pilots, need I say more?
Munto and Munto 2: I can't say I have seen both of these, but I've seen clips of it, and it is very nicely animated for 2003. KyoAni (Kanon 2, AIR, FMP, Lucky Star), so you know it must be halfway decent at the worst.
Akuto, the main source of energy is running low and the Heavens, a world of islands, hidden beyond time, floating above ours, has united against the Magical Kingdom whom uses the most energy. To save both the Magical Kingdom and the Heavens and restore the flow of akuto, the Magical King Munto must follow a vision and find the girl Yumemi in the lower world. Yumemi herself is just a normal girl except that she is the only one who can see the islands of the Heavens floating above. When Munto appears before her she starts thinking about hers and others responsibility to the world.
[description shameless copied from ANN].
Re: Cutie Honey Revitalization of the the classic series staring a suggestively clad cosplaying vigilantee (and occasionally her close friend) defending the city against the evil organization known as Panther Claw. Excellent animation, reminiscent of Gurren Lagann, but more stylized.
Nurse Witch Komugi: A magical girl series that's more about cosplay and humor than anything of real substance, a true parody series. Really strange and pretty funny. Hits everything from internet humor to biker gangs. Komugi, transformed into a magical nurse in order defend against the king of viruses, also has a rival in the form of Magical Maid Koyori.
I'd suggest the Project A-ko series of films, but going back to 1987 might be a bit too far.

PS: And i still am looking for a romantic-anime like School Days, haha.
... I think the guys above are going a bit to old school with the recommendations. I'll stick to some more recent stuff and agree with the above were noted.
Macross Frontier: Real Robots/Romance/Singing Top shelf animation its a 25th anniversary show for the Macross franchise assuming you've seen any of the previous shows the amount of "fanwank" in this show is off the charts. Even if you haven't the visuals are beyond compare especially if you get the Bluray rips from Thora. The music is also very very strong in this show were talking the top 5 music cd's sold by amazon japan are all Macross Frontier CD/singles and all 3 of the cd's have hit at least #3 in japan.
Spice and Wolf: Romance/Barter its really character driven so if you like characters like C.C. go for it. The females lead is awesome.
Gurren Lagann: Classic Super Robots show. This one has a extremely fast pace where they really only do boss fights. No fillers and its constantly being pushed forward. Its also kind of wacky though so don't expect much realism out of it.
Air Gear: comedy/slice of life/tournament/Sports Beware this one contains a lot of nudity if you end up with DVD rips if not you will have censorship crows a bit. Anyway this is a hard one to explain boil down the plot its about Rocket Powered Roller skates if you can get past that its a hilarious show where that is just what they use to battle basically doing extreme stunts and just fighting. Its one you have to watch.
Shigofumi: Its about a girl who delivers letters from the dead. Its also pretty warped so be ready.
Major: Sports(Baseball) This one is nothing like your average sports anime its less about the good guys always win and much more of the journey to a goal. Each season of this is distinctly very different and most have large time skips between them.
Black Lagoon: Basically follows a boat of people around who live in the Ghetto and do odd jobs like delivery or retrieval of black market goods.
Moyashimon Tales of Agriculture: (comedy, slice of life, supernatural) This is a really strange anime with a main character who can see Microbes with his bare eye's. Its strange and can get incredibly disgusting but its entertaining.
Kekkaishi: Very underrated show and its a longer one at 52 episodes. Its about two families guarding the same piece of land from evil entities both families have someone they believe is the true successor. Essentially supernatural battles mainly fought by priests who make barriers to destroy evil spirits who are trying to use the area they protect to power up.
Monster: Seriously just watch this one. Its the story of a doctor who saves someone he shouldn't have and then spends several years of his life on the run trying to fix his mistake. It doesn't really look like anything else and frankly the story is amazing.
Bokurano: The story of 15 Children who end up with a impossible task. This is a really twisted story of how each of them deals with the reality they have to die or everyone else will.
Shonen Onmyouji: from ANN "Abe no Masahiro is the grandson of the great omnyouji Abe no Semei, who passed his teachings on to his grandson. Masahiro lost his sixth sense and the ability to see spirits, but with Mokkun as his guide, he works to become his grandfather's successor." Basically your watching as Masahiro grows into the role of Onmyouji gaining the trust of the 12 gods that work for his grandfather and protecting the Realm from evil spirits. Its a more historical show set well into the past but you might find it interesting.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: This series has 2 distinct orders you can watch it in. I find the broadcast order more entertaining for the first watch through. Also note the first episode either way isn't like the rest of the series so you need to give this at least 2 episodes before you give up. A sequel should be coming out for it this year as well. Some people love this show and some hate it. As one of the people who found it incredibly entertaining I'm forced to recommend it however.
Well that is what I can come up with at the moment. I basically listed series from 2004-present as I felt that is a pretty fair period for the last few years.
Bonus recommendation: A older series (1999) that most people haven't seen but is awesome it The Legend of Black Heaven. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend tracking it down.
P.S. Romance like School Days Kinda.
Well you won't find a exact match but there are a few very twisted Harem/romance anime's that have come out post school days. These are not must watch animies for the most part just on topic for your second question.
H2O Footprints in the Sand: Expect mach truck sized plot holes and WTF moments but its a rather dark natured harem anime. (please note this is down here because its not a great anime like the other its just got some things in common with school days and is watchable if not messed up)
Shuffle: This one is a very light hearted Harem that has dark undertones. Its not like the "nice boat" ending in school days but its a Harem with a conclusion that I really liked.
Myself Yourself: Another twisted Harem anime this one is fairly close to how screwed up school days was so you might find yourself liking it.
Ef a tale of Memories/Melodies: Very twisted and artistic portrayals of screwed up people getting together and working their way through some serious problems.
Kanon(2006)/Clannad: These I'd consider must watch anime. They are a mix of Comedy and Drama and have significant highs and lows of both. They are both from the same studio and have some similarities but are overall very different and both are well worth watching. Note Kanon has 2 versions you want the 24 episode series from 2006 not the 13 or so episode OVA from 2004.

Series widely available in 2001 (and very much so available in DVD rip batches today) and forward are too old school? We're lucky I didn't go back to the 1990s more extensively.:D
That aside, while I would go after certain series on your list are I would most definitely consider not "must-see," you caught me on Moyashimon. I can't believe I forgot that one.
However...
P.S. Romance like School Days Kinda.

Kanon (2004) was not an OVA, it was broadcast just the same. Toei only started doing movies/OVAs of the KEY-authored series after KyoAni got the rights to produce AIR. A technicality, but I figured I'd point that out.
I have to say your definition of "twisted" is a great deal tamer than my own.
Myself;Yourself doesn't belong on this list for one reason. It was aired the season right after School Days, so all of us watchers of School Days (MFauli included) had great expectations for this series, that promised a similarly dark side to it. HUGE letdown. There was simply no depth to any of the characters the same way that School Days or even Shuffle! had. We had lame character archetypes like cheerful girl becomes quiet possibly traumatized, shallow step mother (who I had hoped had more depth to her, sadly did not). Myself;Yourself seemed like a series that continually hinted there was a lot of backstory or a great deal of depth behind it (it was marketed that way as well), but there was really nothing at all beneath the surface.
(Plus I knew MFauli had watched it, and yes, sometimes I do check for responses in series threads when I recommend them.)
I am also surprised that anyone who made it all the way through H2O would recommend it to anyone, at all, no matter the similarities to the request. You did point out reservations though.
Shuffle! I think is a bit too light hearted to compare to School Days, but it does have an arc or two that fit the bill.
Kanon and Clannad however, lack a lot of the mental and psychological interplay that School Days has.
All good series mind you (except Myself;Yourself and H2O), but MFauli is really picky when it comes to School Days series (as we all are), and I don't think most of them are a decent comparison to the depth of character development in School Days.

your right of course the animation in Kanon 04 is way to crappy to be OVA anyway. Doesn't change much though anyone looking to watch Kanon should stick to the 06 version.

Thing is Myself Yourself and really anything post and at the end of School days was greatly hindered by certain axe murderers. He asked for recent series somewhat like School days I maintain its along the same vein though clearly not as good. Then again nothing is identical to School days and your arguments seem to be they should be. I can say the same thing about True Tears which is a good series but by no means like school days and something I find about equally as far away as Myself Yourself.
I am also surprised that anyone who made it all the way through H2O would recommend it to anyone, at all, no matter the similarities to the request. You did point out reservations though.
I only pointed it out because it has a "nice boat" like moment. Honestly it was pretty bad as a series the very ending was especially terrible and many of the plot twists were just confusing and not what I'd call good. Still the darker aspects of it were pretty dark and you do have school day like moments of liking and hating characters as they change during the series so I felt it was worth mentioning. Also note that this is one of the few series at least recent ones I can think of where you actually really despise the male lead at times in a degree that I could equate to school days.
Shuffle! I think is a bit too light hearted to compare to School Days, but it does have an arc or two that fit the bill.
Kanon and Clannad however, lack a lot of the mental and psychological interplay that School Days has.[/QUOTE]
I actually think all of these are very similar. All 3 start off fairly light hearted and funny. The thing is as stuff develops there are some very dark points in the series. A big difference though is the main lead as in most series tends to make things better for the various girls while in school days its just taking advantage of them and making everything much worse. Thing is above he said romance anime "like" school days. Short of an exact match, which I can't think of anything that would qualify, I think these have a general mix of light and dark sections that match up pretty well. Kanon in particular has some extremely dark points that will really mess with your emotions.
All good series mind you (except Myself;Yourself and H2O), but MFauli is really picky when it comes to School Days series (as we all are), and I don't think most of them are a decent comparison to the depth of character development in School Days.
Fair enough I don't lurk in this section enough to know anyone's exact taste. I also agree School days had a much deeper and darker level of character development then most series. I was just giving a few options that might work based on some newer stuff. It just seems our way of comparing series as being "like school days" is different. You feel its based purely on a level of character development and I based mine on somewhat dark Romantic series. I would argue your recommendations of True Tears and certainly Chaos head are at least equally as far off as any of mine. Saikano on the other hand I've never seen so I can't comment on it.

I never miss the chance to make a recommendation, even if it may only require a quote and five words.
...now I want to make a long recommendation post, but I do requests, not blind suggestions. I can't seem to generate the inspiration.
EDIT:
Browsing through the thread, I came across a few other series that I haven't had cause to recommend in a while (or forgot about).
Short Episodes Theme: I think a lot of series like this are glanced over because of the short episode format or because they simply end up overlooked. However, some of these titles accomplish so much more in half-sized episodes than longer series.
REC: Just nine 12 minute episodes, this is a romantic drama about an ad agency salaryman and suddenly-homeless rookie voice actress. The series is really cute, and the heroine fairly irrestistible. If you just want something sweet to watch in an afternoon, give this one a try.
Doujin Work: The heroine here is lazy, and when she is dragged to a Con by a friend who heads up a popular douijn circle (and makes a lot of money at it from her eyes), she decides that she will make a living becoming a doujin artist. Of course, she sucks at art. A funny series with a lot of otaku references, consider this a poor man's Genshiken.
Mahou Shoujo Tai Arusu: With a unique art style (almost western) and a surprisingly intertesting plot, this is a series that got a lot of attention, was forgotten, and now that it is licensed in the US, gets under the spotlight again. Follows Alice, a girl who always has been fascinated with witches, as she is transported to another world were witches are very real. She makes a few friends, and ultimately has to save the world, with all sorts of twists along the way. Reminds me a lot of a younger girls' version of Now and Then, Here and There.
Detroit Metal City: For any metal fans, anyone who has seen Metalacolypse, or anyone who likes lots of swearing in their hilarious comedy series, this is a definite watch. Timid male who dreams of singing vapid, terrible happy-folk-pop songs becomes the lead singer of the most hardcore metal band in all of Japan.
Galaxy Angel (the original, the sequels cut back the ecchi of the costume designs and other things that made the series fun): This series is totally and utterly vapid. The plot doesn't matter (girls in the space-military searching for lost technology that they usually forget about), no character development needed either. This is extremely light-hearted slapstick comedy at most shamefully enjoyable.
Final Approach: Another "suddenly wife" romantic comedy series. Boy lives with sister, government discovers birth rates are down, government forces girl onto boy (girl agreed ahead of time). Surprisingly, they even tackle a side plot in this short series.
Candy Boy: Sisterly love, family relationships, an extra-clingly younger schoolmate, and a lot of cute humor. For a web series, the animation is very well done, though the resolutions you'll find subs at are a bit lacking.

Neo Ranga (http://forums.gotwoot.net/showthread.php?p=300974&postcount=54) also uses the half-length episode format and does it rather well. A good series all in all.

Jeez, looks like my power supply died just in time for Ryllharu to bombarded this thread with suggestions before i could. (i should have known better than to use the one that came with the case)
@MFauli
Anyways, i can't say for sure that these series i'm about to recommend are definite "must watch" but i do feel that all of them are solid and deserve to have more people watch them.
Angel Heart
The spiritual sequel to the classic "City Hunter" series. It's fine to start on this show even if you've never watched the original city hunter because the story is not dependent upon your knowledge of city hunter, so at best you might miss a few small reference. The show feature a new female main character "Glass Heart" who is an ex-assassin that tried to commit suicided and later survived through an illegal heart transplant. The heart that was given to her belong to City Hunter Saeba Ryo's wife who died in a traffic accident. "Glass Heart" then experienced a rare medical phenomenon where she begin to recall memories that belong to the previous owner of the heart and this prompt for her to go on a search for Saeba Ryo.
Black Lagoon
I can't believe no one has recommended this yet. I retract my earlier statement because this show is a must watch since it is easily one of the best action anime, period. The story is about a business man who got kidnapped by pirates during a business trip and certain events eventually led him to join and become one of them.
Legend of the Condor Hero I/II
Based on the insanely popular fiction books by Jinyong. I personally felt that these were faithful interpretation of the novel but it's hard to do those books justice in a short anime series. If possible i would like to recommend the live action hong kong version instead since those are vastly superior but since this is an anime recommendation thread, you should try watching these first to see if you like the setting. The story take place in ancient china and revolve around an orphan and his various adventures to eventually led him to became known as "Condor Hero". The series is heavily influenced by martial arts and the concept of chi/ki granting the the user the ability to defy the laws of physics (think DBZ in ancient china with a deeper story and slightly less ridiculous powers).
Those are some great action series for you to try since it seems like those before me have got the other genre covered.

I've never bothered with the second series of Condor Hero... something about the Chinese they use irks me, especially when I loved the Japanese version. I'll just have to force myself to watch a couple of episodes and get used to it. Condor Hero, the first season, was my favorite series for a while.

I thought it was a nice adaptation. I watched it in Cantonese dub though, so no comments on weird Chinese :p. I missed the ending on of the second series on TV though, so I'll probably download it sometime.
Like DarkDragon said, the Hong Kong TV series does include a lot of detail the anime omitted, so I too recommend it for anyone wanting to know more (better yet, read the book if you can find it in a language you understand).

After checking out the Ergo Proxy OP in the music thread, I have to admit that my interest was piqued. Most of you know me pretty well, so is this an anime you think I'd enjoy? I can deal with a fair bit of obscurity and mystery in my anime, but ones like Serial Experiments Lain and Texhnolyze were just too weird and abstract for me. I like to be able to connect with the characters and have the plot move in a definite direction, even if I'm not sure where it's going.

Ergo Proxy is a bit high on the weird and abstract side of things. I can admit I never actually got all the way through it, because I was expecting something more akin to Ghost in the Shell, with a Witch Hunter Robin twist to it, but it is definitely something "higher-minded" and a lot more esoteric.
It still sits on a dvd, waiting to be brought back to my hard drives and watched.

You can watch the first 22 episodes of Ergo Proxy fairly smoothly without trying to work out all the kinks and twists. It's really the last episode that leaves you mind blown to pieces and working out who's who(minor spoiler)
After that, I could recommend you read the Ending Explanation I found back when I finished the series (attachted to my post). I slept soundly after reading that ;)

Could someone give me any good tips for animes that have two people fighting against each other, always striving to becoming stronger. Something like Tenjou Tenge, except good, not crappy. Tenjou Tenge failed in all the critical aspects (in the anime at least, don't know about the manga), got stuck to only be about the past, they cut the brothers fighting, making it into some small thing, giving place for someone else to take the little brothers place as the one wanting to beat the older brother.
Basically a good fighting anime, if something with a brotherhood relationship exists, that would be awesome.

Don't know how accurate this list will be, but I'll try to find some animes that have action with some strong rivalries in some form or another. I'll start with s-CRY-ed, while I think of others and edit my post.
Hajime no Ippo
Mai-HiME
Mai-Otome
Naruto (lol)
If you like sports, well many, if not most, are focused on that principle... of rivals 'battling" each other.

Problem is that there really aren't that many Martial Arts anime out there, but I'll see what I can do. There's Grappler Baki, but that really doesn't fit the bill of what you're looking for. There's Shura no Toki which has various arcs, where the characters are pretty much already fully developed, but the martial art is quite good.
I'll tell you this, the final battle in s-CRY-ed is completely badass.
There's also Air Master, which doesn't really have that big rival, but the martial art and action is really good.
Shadow Skill is another one you should check out, though I don't remember much about the plot at the moment.

well, I don't remember it having a plot, so it's fine.
it could also work as a "wuss gets stronger" series, but the wuss is considerably strong when he starts, and instead of getting stronger, he gets more of a wuss.

I will to defer to Munsu for this, he knows these types of series better than I do, and he already got Scryed and AirMaster on there.
I would add an Ikkitousen on there (really doesn't matter which). The plot is crap, and the fanservice can border on excessive, but the fights are good.

For Martial Arts off the top of my head.
History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi: Action Comedy Its about Shirahama Kenichi who's nickname is weaklegs who joins a dojo to get stronger after meeting a girl. He spends his time at the dojo learning from 6 martial arts masters at once and it results in a lot of fights based on different and fighting disciplines. This one runs 50 episodes and is more in the teen category.
Tenjho Tenge: This one is really about creating the ultimate martial artist and as a warning the series has a bad tendency to do very "flashbacks" of events that you haven't seen before. The Manga is pretty hard to read because of this and the releases are pretty slow its also on the Mature side. The anime runs 24 episodes and 2 OVA's and lacks a ending.
Fist of the North Star: This has a lot of versions and I hesitate to call it Martial arts but thats what they claim they are doing. Basically the Main guy uses a martial arts technique based on pressure points to make people explode. The orignal is pretty old but it has a lot of variations in OVA's and other series so you might want to give it a shot. Warning if you watch the old series in the first 26 episodes there happens to be a abnormal amount of random filler some of which I hear is horrible I can't say I've seen it all at this point but after that it gets a lot better apparently.
Those are all I can think of atm I'd call martial arts instead of just random fighting.

1 and 2 seen, Kenichi was really fun and good although it had a crappy ending. Tenjou Tenge was good up until the fact that it SUCKED. The fighting was awesome, the anime had awesome potential, but they focused the anime on all the wrong parts and forgot all the important things. And so it just ended upp sucking.
Fist of the north star I have not seen, although from images and what I've heard about it, it's not something I would like.

All fair Fist of the North Star is basically just DBZ without dragged out battles.
As for Tenjou Tenge the issue isn't they focused on the wrong things its that it followed the manga and they left in the what 6-8 episodes of almost pointless flashback episodes.
Honestly with Martial arts stuff your better off ignoring it and watching more broadly themed fighting stuff. I didn't dare recommend Sumomomo Momomo which is just scary and strange.
As for a recommendation in the fighting area have you tried Hajime no Ippo? If you haven't its a boxing anime that focuses quite a bit on the fighting and training aspects of becoming a boxer. If you have then we are getting a new series for it in January so that may cover you.

I remember Shadow Skill being very good. The OVA especially.
Shigurui if you don't mind excessive gore, some nudity, and homosexual references. But the show is definitely what your looking for -- two men aiming to get stronger. Basilisk can be fun if your up for fantasy ninja powers and a little Romeo & Juliet.
If your interested in manga read Vagabond. The artwork is top notch. He does a great job at showing movement on paper.

Some nudity? A man eats a woman's amputated nipple in front of her . It's fucking beautiful.
Shigurui is also a nicely plotted show, a rival between two brothers for the favor of their psycho dad. Wonderful series.

Don't watch Tenjou Tenge, it's a waste of time. It's good the first few episodes and then sucks the rest of the way. Tedious flashbacks that span about 10+ episodes come to mind. What looks to be a pretty cool martial arts/high school story turns into a "man possessed by a demonic sword" with the flashbacks and completely strays from what you thought would be a martial arts/high school setting.
I wouldn't mind the flashbacks and demonic sword crap if it was actually good.
I'd recommend Fist of the North Star as well. Old, but still one of my all time favs.

Do you mind being a little more specific?
I could just go to AniDB and sort the list by rating and rattle off a ton of titles.
Nodame Cantabile
Code Geass
ARIA
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Rurouni Kenshin so you can watch Rurouni Kenshin: Reminiscence
CLANNAD (and After Story)
Detroit Metal City
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Monster
GTO
NANA
Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water
But that isn't any fun.
(This is actually the same method I used to see a lot of series when I was starting out.)
EDIT:
I was down repped for this post (rightly so), probably for a "lack of effort." Which is true, I should have simply cut it off at, "a little more specific."
Look, there is absolutely no point in recommending a generic list of "Good Series." Anyone with half a brain can go to the Top Ten/Rated/100/200/etc of AnimeNewsNetwork (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/ratings-anime.php), AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=animelist&orderby.rating=0.2&orderby.name=1.1&orderbar=0&noalias=1), Animenfo (http://www.animenfo.com/statistic/top.php?type=anime), or Anime-Planet (http://www.anime-planet.com/anime/) and look at what they have and have not seen. There's several lists of "Good Series." You can even cross-reference them to find the best.
But what's the point in doing the same stupid thing in a thread like this? Just go to those sites.
On the other hand, you could get something a lot better here. You add a little more information, like "I hated [series1] and [series2], but loved [series3, 4 and 5]. What would you recommend to me then?" and in return, you'll get a subjective recommendation that is probably dramatically better than the one you could get on your own.
How the hell is anyone supposed to know what you have even SEEN much less what you actually liked or disliked unless you add a few specifics? Sure, I could list a bunch of subjectively picked titles, but that would be my personal preference of "good series." There are already plenty of "Top 5 or 10 Anime" threads in this forum, most of which I have posted in. Noooooo...by all means, let me waste both our time by rattling off fifteen titles you've already watched. You don't really care what I like (if you do, you shouldn't), you care about what you will like.
I enjoy taking the list of what you've seen and handpicking titles I think you'll enjoy based on those likes and dislikes. It's challenging sometimes, fun and entertaining for me. Let me know what your favorite series are, and I'll give you more favorites. I do not enjoy regurgitating the top 100 lists.

Well my list is of 138 series and movies, are you sure you wanna see every title? Sorry for being so unspecific, it's just difficult for me to come up with any new anime at all (regardless of genre) to see.
And listing is what I basically wanted, because I thought it would be too much of a bother for others wanting to help if I asked them to give a little review and a short storyline description.
And on another note, searching Anidb or any other such site feels so unpersonal, so strict and formal, I like this forum and the people on it, so I thought I would get better tips here.
Favorites on my part are.

hey, so I was just watching Gin'iro no Kami no Agito, and in the beginning when they're running through the town, it made me start thinking about parkour in anime. With so many Hollywood movies using parkour in them these days, I figured there should be some cool anime with it.
off the top of my head, when I think about anime with parkour type scenes in them, the only ones I can think of would be like Tekkonkinkreet which had a lot of like roof jumping kinda stuff, then Naruto has some of that same stuff, and a little at the beginning of Tokyo Tribes 2.
those anime only really have like, jumping from roof to roof. but those are the only ones I can come up with off the top of my head.
so I was just wondering about other anime that have parkour scenes, or preferably anime that focus on parkour.
can anyone could give me some suggestions?

Fate/Stay Night Is about a group of 7 Magi who each summon a servant that is either a Legendary hero from the past or from mythology(the hero's don't have to have ever lived). They then use these servants to fight a war over obtaining the Holy grail where the Magus with the last Servant standing wins the grail and gets any wish they want granted.
That is pretty much the short version. You may want to add its based on a H-game but that is not terribly relevant to the anime only for recommending the game.

I wondered how good Toaru Majutsu Index is? The Picture used to present the series scares me a little because I see some kind of mages, a nun and lolis in school uniform with guns... this seems to be very random to me, but I heard a lot of good things about it, which is why I though I'd give it a try..
but I only found Eclipse subs yet and the .mkv files are so huge, ist there really such a big difference in quality? They are nearly twice as big as the normal .avi version

It's a matter of preference. Personally, i always enjoy watching an anime using a full screen so i get MKV whenever possible, if you feel differently just get the avi files instead.
Just be sure to watch eclipse subs, they're definitely the best.
As for the loli aspect, i'm not gonna lie to you there are alot of loli characters but it's not like it has any relevance to the story itself.

If you don't have download limits, get HD. If you like HD action, get HD. If not, I'd say the smaller versions are fine.
The closest thing to Index I can think of is Shakugan no Shana, so if you liked that, go for it.
That's the quick and brief explanation anyway. Someone else'll have ot give the detailed recommendations. :)
edit: Oh, and about eclipse, they're the only subbers for a reason. Their subs just kicked out all competition, speed or quality subbers. You can be faster, or you can be better, but you'll not find a group that beats Eclipse (nowadays anyway, though there are some close rivals).

I got bored mid-season (most things I'm watching have no notable discussion) so, envious of all the discussion Index was recieving and drawn in by the purported "amazing animation," (which is true by the way) I downloaded the 13 episodes released and marathoned it. The series has a lot of everything, but they approach it in a really interesting way.
Most of the main characters view all the magic, ESP, and other abilities through science. The author did a very interesting approach with some very heavy science like quantum physics and includes one or two very good examples to explain it, simple enough for laymen or teens to understand the concepts.
The approach is a little like the background story to Guilty Gear, where science had advanced enough to create, "free energy for all, which was subsequently dubbed as 'magic.' " There's those who still prefer to maintain the traditional ways (like Chipp and Jam from GG) and these are the magic users of the Index Universe.
The closest thing to Index I can think of is Shakugan no Shana, so if you liked that, go for it.I thought this comparison is interesting. I had avoided Index because I actually hate Shakugan no Shana, I thought it was totally overrated. I even called the series Shakugan no Index a few times.
But the explanation behind all the abilities and the way it is presented is completely different. It's not just another tsundere love triangle with delusions of grandeur. If anything, the backstory is about as developed as the entirety of Shakugan no Shana. There is less deus ex machina too. The consequences of actions in Index are not something just tossed aside. So far, everything in the series has implications later on.
The series was a total surprise to me.

This one?
That is Edward Elric, from Full Metal Alchemist. You can watch the old version, or you can wait for a remake this spring.
If that's not it, we might need a screenshot. I reloaded the banner about 50 times to get that one. (There are more images in there than I thought!)
Is there a full version of that picture? =) I love it.
Oh, isn't the new one just going to follow the manga? if that's the case, it'll be a lot different. Shouldn't it be called the alternative rather than remake? (I cannot wait for this btw)

Macross Frontier and Claymore
Can anyone pls tell me about what subbers to watch and give their opinion on the shows?
Buffalobiian
Tue, 02-03-2009, 06:41 AM
Short Overview:
Claymore
Plot: Girls with swords and demonic powers fight against monsters in a medieval society.
Thoughts: Awesome show. Good action, captivating soundtracks, makes you think about the the lack ofpolitics of the place too. Anime-original ending sucked hard though, but it's still a good show. Recommended for the Shounen inside of you.
Subber: Eclipse DVD re-release here (http://torrents.no-sekai.de/eclipse/%5bEclipse%5d%20Claymore%20(DVD).torrent)
Macross Frontier
Plot: Space fleet heads into deep space and gets attacked by unknown alien life form.
Thoughts: Very good songs - as you'd expect from a Macross title. Flashy space battles and CG mecha. Plot is somewhat unoriginal. Some would consider it broken. I found it fine. It slows down a bit near the middle, but hang in there, the finale's a bang. I found the show overall to be pretty damn good. Recommended if you like mecha and space battles.
Subbers:
gg - Ep7 and up
Lunar - batch can be found on isohunt. Can't guarantee for quality (didn't watch)
Menclave/Aone: releasing as we speak. Most likely the best translators of the bunch
Thora: Blu-Ray releases. I think they're using menclave's translations
If you can wait, got with the last 2. If not, I was more than happy with gg. I watched Ep1-6 from Gattai (can't find them now), and the Anniversary special from Shinsen.

The dub of Black Lagoon isn't bad either until the last arc of The Second Raid (last 4 eps of the second season). The main cast is actually amazingly well done.
Other series of senseless, glorious violence?
That also boasts loveable main characters? Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (and sequel Kai). This series is an absolute must for any mystery fan, but it was broadcast considerably uncensored, loads of violence, but plenty of humor mixed in and one hell of a loveable central character (for season 2, season 1 is well divided among them all). Loveable villains too! (Depending on the arc). Get Ayu or WinD subs.
Higurashi is one of my all time favorite series (hence the avatar).
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan. Only season 1, and make sure they are dvd rips. Froth-Bite or Triad.
Elfen Lied. Gore, more gore, nudity, cute split personality psychos (see Higurashi) and lolis if you are into that. Get anime.fin if you can find them, a4e's dvd rips if you can't.
Mezzo Forte and Mezzo DSA. Be forewarned, Mezzo Forte is a hentai, but the hentai is really just there for being there, it's actually an awesomely violent OVA. This is Black Lagoon in Japan before the Black Lagoon manga was written. DSA is just as good, but lighter so it could be aired on TV. The three main characters are awesome. Jeet Kune Do ass-kicker chick, genius punk technician, and pun-filled forceably retired cop.
I don't think you have more than one option for either show on this one.

Elfen Lied has an open ending. It's up to you how you want to take it. The manga however, does not, and it is fairly depressing. But on a whole the manga is a lot more depressing. They are different enough to say the plots are not identical.
It's like two scenes, and there is a censored version out there that cuts out the hentai. The only reason hentai is there (very disjointed as I somewhat mentioned) because the creator made Kite as well, where the hentai was a central part of the plot. It has absolutely no bearing to the plot, especially the scene in the first of the two OVA episodes. They literally tacked it on as the last four minutes.

That's rather difficult unless you give me something more specific. There are a lot of "happy" anime but most of them are also borderline annoying.
Aishiteru ze Baby is a very happy/cute drama story about a highschool student taking care of his 5 year old cousin who was left alone. The main character is somewhat of a playboy so it's quite funny to see him suddenly try to assume the role of a parent.
Watching any animated version of manga written by the great Adachi Mitsuru always leave me smiling so therefore, I recommend the following:
Touch The story revolve around a pair of twin brothers who both have feeling for their childhood friend. The older twin is a slob while the younger is the hero of the school but their childhood friend treat them both equally. It's a drama with a heavy baseball background.
H2 Story involving 2 main characters who are best friends and rivals in both love and baseball. One of the main character suffered an injury that forced him to quit baseball so he enrolled in a highschool that does not have a baseball team but eventually circumstances eventually bring him back into the game.
I know the description of the Adachi works sound really plain but it's really hard for me to give a much better description since i don't want to spoil story elements that get reveal early on. Both anime were from the 80's so they looks outdated but they come with my highest recommendation. Both have their fair share of comedy and tend to come across as funny without being forced and the story is well paced and contain enough twist to keep them interesting.
All of those anime are quite happy so you won't feel depressed watching them.

I imagine Kraco and I would give the same answer when posed with this question.
ARIA - The Animation
ARIA - The Natural
ARIA - Arietta (OVA)
ARIA - The Orgination
AniDB link to the first series (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2659)
A slice of life series that you'll either love, or totally hate. I found every single episode (notable exception of 1 in the final series) some of the most relaxing episodes in all of animedom. A perfect series for unwinding a leaving a smile on your face.
Unless you find it boring, and then you won't like it at all. Slice of Life series are not for everyone, they are liked on a case-by-case basis.
Aside from that I completely second Dark Dragon's Ai Baby recommendation.
Bamboo Blade, Kaleido Star, and Kamichu! are also good choices. A highly recommended sports comedy (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=5356), circus comedy/light drama (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=635), and a Middle School Goddess (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3195) slice of life comedy respectively.
I still recommend watching both seasons of Higurashi. It will leave you smiling at the end of it all.

If your looking for lulz:
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzamiya(from ANN):
On the first day of high school a beautiful girl named Haruhi Suzumiya introduces herself as having "no interest in ordinary humans". She asks for any aliens, time travelers, sliders or espers to join her. Watching her weird behaviour is Kyon who sits in front of Haruhi and is the only person who talks to her. When Kyon comments about Haruhi's joining every club in school and then quitting he unwittingly gives Haruhi an idea to start her own after school club. Thereafter Kyon and several others find themselves dragged, literally, into the Save our world by Overloading it with fun Suzumiya Haruhi's Brigade (the S.O.S. Brigade for short).
Lucky Star(from ANN):
Portrays the lives of several school girls attending a Japanese high school with a very loose humor tone. The main heroine is Konata Izumi, an athletic and intelligent girl who, despite these attributes, is not in a sports club, and her grades remain low. Her laziness at school is due to her love for anime and video games, and she is not interested in much else.
Ouran High School Host Club(from ANN):
Haruhi is a poor tomboyish student at a school for the ultra-wealthy, able to attend because of a scholarship, and unable to even afford a uniform. One day, she stumbles across the decidedly peculiar but very popular Ouran Host Club. She tries to leave, but accidentally breaks a vase, and unable to pay for it, she's told that she'll have to stay and do odd jobs. That is, until they decide she would be more valuable as a club member. Not realizing she's female due to her appearance, they fix her up and give her a male uniform. She's an instant hit, so they decide to have her keep up the charade even after they find out the truth. Haruhi, being average almost to a fault, doesn't know what to make of the unconventional activities of the Host Club (or of the even more unconventional members), but having little choice, she plays along. Before long, real bonds are formed, friends made, and Haruhi finds herself accepted in a way she could never have been otherwise in this affluent school.

Minami-ke first (!) and second season (do you actually call them "seasons" because they are not really related)
the first 2 Blade Child mentioned are very good too
and maybe you want to try Rozen Maiden... it gets extremely funny and cute now and then
but the ending from the second season and the story in general are not really a "happy"... in fact it's a bit creepy sometimes, at least for me.. probably because of the (very good) background music.

Munsu makes good picks for preferences like your own. I couldn't outdo him for this.
I would add Real Drive for your cyberpunk enjoyment. Same author as GiTS and Appleseed. It's more slice of life GiTS with a responsible (not going overboard out of ego/guilt) environmentalism slant. They throw around some interesting ideas too like characters without cybernetic enhancements in a world that practically requires them, love with an android, old people are still totally badass, etc.
I'll also throw in Higurashi (and sequel) again. Anyone who enjoys mystery series and series like Lucky Star should probably see this.

You'd definitely like White Albumn and Maria+Holic, for sure. Asu no Yoichi, maybe. It's not that spectacular but it's a decently "fun" series.
Since you seem to have no problem with CG series or even like them. I recommend RideBack from this season as well. It's not full CG, just the RideBacks, but it's a bit unique and might turn out to be very good.
Hajime no Ippo had a new season starting this winter season. The first season if you haven't watched it, you should. It's a very strong, well developed manga and later anime. However, the first season is not new to this season, but I felt the need to recommend the first season since this new season is coming along strongly as well.
(Disregard this, didn't see the requirement part, heh.)

For the first three:
Maria+Holic: This will be a series that you'll either love, or totally hate. M+H is unquestionably a SHAFT (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=producer&prid=77) series. The only series you have on there that they've done is ef, and ef...isn't a SHAFT series. They produced and animated it, but when you call something a SHAFT series, you explicitly mean three titles. Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase, PaniPoni Dash!, and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. If you liked those series, I can guarantee that you will love Maria+Holic. You do have Kamen no Maid Guy on your list, so if you haven't seen these three series, it is a fairly good estimate. Aside from that indicator, the series is hopelessly random (stuff going on in the backgrounds), crazy plot points, clearly mentally unbalanced characters, and otherwise just absolutely strange. The art is SHAFT-y too (soft colors, ridiculously elaborate backgrounds at random points) much of what you are familiar with from ef. But where ef has an even flow in storytelling (albeit segmented intentionally) Maria+Holic will be all over the place.
White Album: This series has been shaping up as an absolutely superb drama. I cannot more highly recommend this series for this season. A lot of people viewing it have actually likened it to a jdrama rather than an anime. The plot is somewhat slow, but things shape up over the course of several episodes and more and more becomes clear as we are clued in. Not because we're seeing all sorts of information they are not, but because the characters themselves are finally starting to realize these developments. The audience is taken along that thought process. Another thing this features is incredibly realistic characters. I've thought this before with characters from other romance series like Bokura ga Ita, but the fact that we are clued in to the inner thoughts of characters, often opposed to their dialogue, adds to this effect. They aren't believable as characters, they are believable as people. There is also an interesting window in how much simpler our lives have gotten through technology. There are all too many developments that the audience would think could be totally solved with a cell phone. Too bad this takes place in 1986. Cast is phenomenal too. The two main girls are voiced by two seiyuu who are singers themselves (Mizuki Nana as the more experienced one and Aya Hirano as the budding starlet) and the rest of the cast is well done as well. The only downside is that the series does start out a little slow.
Asu no Yoichi!: As a huge fan of the manga, I was really looking forward to this series. It does a great job at catering to any number of niche fetishes (has one of the best tsundere characters of all time in my opinion) and it's a standard harem series. The anime adaptation has begun to fall a little flat for me lately. Aside from things I can't really complain about (cut material, rushed pace at times, etc) because they are fairly common in manga-to-anime adaptations, the series feels very rushed and unfocused. I wonder if they are rushing forward to get at the meat of the series and away from character introductions, but I've just been a little disappointed. Cast is great, very well chosen for their respective characters. It's standard light fare. You will undoubtedly get to see a fetish you are into along the way, and you don't really need to think about it too much.
(I'm probably going back to the manga though. There is a little more focus on my particular favorite.)
----------------------------------------------
There are not really a wealth of series that are "new" this season.
Akikan! - Another totally light fare series. It's funny enough, but it wasn't for me. There's nothing to think about in this series. Cans of soda turn into girls. The main character or others "kisses" a can, and they turn into girls. I can't say too much more about it because I only watched the first episode and it didn't appeal to me. Perhaps others still watching it can elaborate.
Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo - Sunrise space opera (surprise!) series that I can't say too much about EDIT( because I didn't watch it for more than one episode ) (Another I never picked up.)
Kurokami the Animation - Another series I am a fan of the manga of, and the anime has a few deal breakers for me. A couple of shifts in character (college grad -> high school) in order to appeal to the anime watching audience more, and other minor issues here and there. The premise is still solid (partnering with mystical beings) in order to mutually gain power and dopplegangers play a huge role. A pretty standard shonen series, not unlike Sekirei, but tone down the ecchi and increase the violence.
RIDEBACK - This has been one of the surprises this season. I read the first volume of the manga, and while there are changes I at first questioned, there really hasn't been any loss to the series. The direction they've taken it is a little more mainstream, but very pleasant. While there are initial things like a ballet artist discovering motorcycle racing with undertones of politics, the series has shown an excellent balance of character development and good action sequences. The soundtrack (techno mostly) has fit in very nicely, I barely notice it, and the cast is good as well. A nice mix of veterans and a few newer seiyuu I haven't heard before, or often enough. You have both Appleseed films on there. You will definitely enjoy this.
Sora wo Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai (Munto TV) - I've been told that the first three episode are an exact rip of the original OVAs converted to widescreen, so it may be too early to say how the animation holds up, but this series has been a mix of pure eye candy and more classical animation. Fans of ef or Kanon/Clannad/AIR (since this is also done by KyoAni) won't be disappointed. A good romance element has been initiated, some excellent combat with more to come, and some surprisingly deep issues have been approached in character development. If you've liked any of the KyoAni series previously, but want a little bit more action and perhaps the same depth in characters, this would be an obvious choice.
I don't watch Kemono no Souja Erin, Regios, or Hetalia Axis Powers, so you'll need input from others on those.

Regios is a relatively interesting alternate world shounen superpower battle anime. Some appealing characters, and a main character who is very powerful, but hesitant to use his powers for reasons yet to be unveiled. It can be quite confusing though. Also if you hate Engrish, you might want to skip this, or at least the first 2 minutes of each episode.
Kemono no Souja Erin is about a girl named Erin (duh) who is the daughter of a village "doctor" who takes care of Toudas (giant lizards used for war). She eventually takes interest and talent in her mother's work. A nice relaxing series, but the art is very simple.
I watch both of these and enjoy them thoroughly.

Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo - Sunrise space opera (surprise!) series that I can't say too much about other than the pacing is off. It's rapid fire, and only now are things beginning to clarify themselves. (Another I never picked up.)
How can you evaluate a show you never picked up, eh?
I actually like this show. I had absolutely no idea what's going on after the first episode, but that's only because the show is that sort of an action comedy. Hardly unique these days, and falls into the company of many fine shows in that respect. After the second episode you start to get many of the important points already, though the plot is kept a bit hidden for its own benefit (I hope). In short this is a show about fast paced action and a crazy AI voice acted by Lelouch's VA.
Oh, and the pacing isn't off. I don't know where Ryllharu got that one.

Uhhuh. Then how did you watch it if you didn't pick it up? Happened to see all the eps so far when visiting your brother, or something? If you are watching a show, then you did pick it up. As simple as that.
I still disagree about the pacing statement. Saying pacing is off indicates the creators failed to create the kind of pacing they were aiming for or they had no aim to begin with (which only happens with terrible scripts/shows). Saying the pacing is off in a style that intentionally is confusing to a degree equals to saying the art is off in cubism...

Well I checked out Honey and Clover. Only finished season 1. It's an ok series. Has it's funny moments like with Morita, but other than that it's actually a little boring.
Then I moved onto Lovely Complex...... and..... WOW!! This was an awesome series. Loved everything about it. Best romance anime in my book. Well, romance/comedy.

I'm greatly surprised that you liked Lovely Complex better than HnC. Don't get me wrong, LC was fine, and I quite liked it when it was airing, but HnC for me is still one of the best romance anime out there. I find the second season to be more compact (less boring for you maybe) but it has more drama as well. If you dislked the drama from S1, then you may be right in not going into S2.
If you liked Lovely Complex, try Kami-sama Kazoku. For some reason, I get reminded of that when I think of LC.

Aw, i just went through the whole list of animesuki.com, but im incapable of finding myself something.
Basically, im looking for an adventure-anime, the longer the better. Iīll try to list most of what i already know:
- Scrapped Princess (really liked that one, great atmosphere)
- Utawarerumono (nice premise, but a bit too generic in the end)
- Fantastic Children (best anime every imo)
- Eureka Seven (probably my best "modern" long-running adventure anime)
- Now and then, here and there (2nd best anime ever ^^)
- Vision of Escaflowne (didnt like it in the beginning, then grew to love it)
- Towards the Terra (sometimes slow and..."difficult" to watch, nonethelss on the better side)
- Tytania (still watching, nothing special, but theres nothing else)
- Age no Hero (or what it was called, with that boy, that could transform into a super-strong monster) (interesting in the beginng, but it was a chore to watch it to the end)
- Naruto (well, still watching)
- One Piece (following the manga, but dont really like it anymore due to overdone sillyness)
- HXH (great)
- Claymore (also great)
- Death Note (not THE adventure anime, but the lenght of the show made me mention it. And awsome anime, of course)
- Nadia - The Secret of Blue Water (older stuff, but this is great)
- Dragonball (if only it had never ended...but then again GT...meh)
- NGE (awsome, but i wouldnt want a show thats even more on the psychological side)
- Record of Lodoss War (awsome back then, now its a bit dated imo)
- Code Geass 1 and 2 (well, season 1 rocked, season 2 felt rushed)
- Pumpkin Scissors (im still surprised that theres no season 2, the story of season 1 rather ended "small", small as in "we dont know any more of what is going on")
- Cowboy Bebop (not a CRAZY fan of it, but its good)
- Kiba (definition of generic adventure anime.)
- Monster (I prefer fantasy, but this show went into so much detail, it was awsome)
- Ergo Proxy (stopped watching at around ep10, just too...i dont even know what)
- Souko no Strain (kind of good, but felt generic at the end)
- Digimon (first two seasons are superb, season 3 still good, then it goes to complete crap)
- Noein (GREAT show)
And so on, im sure i missed a lot, but i cant remember everything.
Based on the above list, is there something you could recommend to me?
EDIT:
Thanks you two, added three series you mentioned and i already saw. I think ill start with Regios, then start Serei no Moribito.
Ryllharu, you mentioned how i have quite a lot of high quality series in my list...do you know any series that is in the same league of, say, NGE, Naruto, Digimon (or Scrapped Princess), that you say is an absolute must-see? You already recommended a few series, but i dont have the impression that all of these are must-sees (but are still good).

You've got some high quality series listed there. Not all of mine will live up to it.
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi - Short, just 13 episodes, but it's high on the comedy, and it's a very high-quality series. While the setting doesn't fundamentally change, it's more like Sliders meets Excel Saga meets some buddy/romance flick. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=70)
Digimon Adventure - Yeah, it's a kids show, but it kicked way more ass than Pokemon. At 54 episodes for just the original series not including the spinoffs, it has a lot of material. Kids get stuck in an alternate reality, so adventure is covered right there. Toss in a pretty decent English dub too. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=234)
Fushigi Yuugi - If there was a hardcore shoujo version Inuyasha with a reverse harem, this is the definitive one. (It predates it though.) Look no further than here to find an angsty, long (54 episodes and 3 OVAs), and fairly satisfying series of a girl trapped in a world inside a book, and then everything sort of goes to shit. Betrayal, lies, tears, the works. Perhaps the anime is toned down a bit, but the manga sure wasn't. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=87)
Galaxy Express 999 - You don't seem too averted to older titles, and at 113 episodes starting from 1979, there's a lot of material. This is one of those "classic" series that everyone talks about when they think of anime, and CrunchyRoll was airing some of these from the beginning, I don't know how far along they are now. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=484)
Outlaw Star - Headstrong male lead character, close combat spaceship dogfights, strong side characters, a space adventure series that's more of a shonen version of Bebop. 26 episodes. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=171)
Grenadier: Hohoemi no Senshi - It's an adventure series with over the top gunslingers, over the top boobs, and over the top fanservice otherwise. It's light fare, but it's not bad when you are bored. Not long though, just 12 episodes. It doesn't feel rushed though, and the pacing is pretty good. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2326)
Seirei no Moribito - Someone (more likely many) in the forums would crucify me if I forgot this one. Wasn't to my taste, but it's incredibly high quality. 26 episodes. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4403)
Slayers [franchise] - Slayers, Slayers NEXT (the best one), Slayers TRY, a slew of OVAs and movies, and new series still coming out. Magic, comedy, idiot characters, pretty good combat, and just one adventure after another. More material than worth counting. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=39).
You can even watch it in space (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=403)!
Lastly, I will toss out Chrome Shelled Regios, which is currently airing. They don't particularly go anywhere like a standard adventure, but it absolutely has the feel of an adventure series. 24 episodes total, some kickass combat (potentially even better later on), and that's all I can really say. (Felli is the best character).
AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=5911)

I tried to pick some that contain people moving around from my list.
Edit: Ryll beat me to it by 2.4 seconds, or so. I'm not gonna remove the few duplicates, but I strongly agree on Regios so far.

Wow, why have i never heard of this anime?
I hereby recommend everyone UNINHABITED PLANET SURVIVE.
It´s pure adventure, so enjoyable. Heres a summary:
In the future, most of mankind lives in artificial space colonies, climate-controlled and completely safe. The orphan girl Luna, selected to receive a scholarship at the prestigious Soria Academy, finds herself in quite different circumstances. An excursion gone terribly awry leads to Luna and her classmates being stranded on an uninhabited planet. Without any experience of untamed nature, the motley crew is faced with a challenging struggle to stay alive until rescue comes. If it comes...
Basically, a bunch of kids is alone on an island and tries to survive. So far it doesnt feature any of all the modern goofyness, and i especially love the monster-design, they´re not cartoony but rather realistic and i feel honestly scared by the look of some of them exactly because of that.
And most importantly, this is not another "young children rule the world"-anime, in this series, children are children, even if some may have more experience than others.
Im at episode 8, there are 52 in total.

Sun, 04-12-2009, 08:06 AM
It seems more like a Robinson Crusoe anime, but you'll probably like the "Lord of the Flies IN SPACE" anime, better known as Infinite Ryvius (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=192). A series I have regrettably not been able to see (but really want to).
Sorry for the delay on this one, didn't see the edit.
This kind of question really depends on the viewer. Some might say that a particular series is an absolute must see, while others might not. I would like to say that Nanoha A's is a must-see, but as a shonen magical girl series, that only applies to people who watched Dragonball and Sailor Moon Sunday mornings at 6am.
If you're mentioning NGE, Naruto, and Scrapped Princess, I'd have to respond with series like Dragonball (the original) and RahXephon.
Dragonball because it's...well...Dragonball.
RahXephon because it is a slightly less angsty (not by much), more polished version of NGE. While NGE might be the penultimate in angsty psychological mecha, RahXephon is a little more mysterious where NGE is overt, but no less shy to tragedies.
Scrapped Princess is more of a problem. I find it so unique, there is a lot of difficulty finding something comparable. It's medieval, swordplay, magic (all common), but tied in with absolutely fantastic characters and storytelling that it's impossible to find something similar. Mogudan's unique character design and art just makes it that much tougher to find something alike. It comes down to a stylistic basis, or something else with a unique style that can compete. I find that series like Last Exile (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=581) and Chrno Crusade (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=1052) are only some of the few must-see titles that can live up to it.
Last Exile possesses this awesome steampunk and bush pilot aesthetic to it, some decent character development (it's been a while, so I forget some). Villains that you immediately loathe on first sight, and a lot of excellent visual and character design. Range Murata provides the particular styling that makes it all stand out.
Chrno Crusade is similar in that way. Take heavy doses of Christanity, demonology, the 1920s, and anime archetypes and smash them all together. A lot of it is just a series of tragedies all bound together through nefarious design or maybe mere coincidence, but it has a style all its own, something only recently re-achieved by series like Baccano or Trinity Blood. Chrno Crusade would be on a must-see list for anything, and while comparing it to Scrapped Princess isn't an ideal, it is one of the first series I think of when trying to compare it.

Lucky Star (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4777), I'd say is similar to Azumanga Daioh, if you've seen that. though, I've only read the Azumanga manga for comparison.. but yeah, it's a slice-of-life comedy involving high school girls. it's a pretty easy watch, though I personally don't recommend it in high dosage. if you like K-On, then I'd say you'll like Lucky Star.
Ah! My Goddess (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2533) is a romance about a loser college student who gets a perfect GF. It's a pretty entertaining watch, and one of my personal favorite romances. but that could just be because it was one of my first shows.. I got it here from AonE after I finished all their Naruto :\.

Kamichu! might work, since it does have some strange (which can be cute?) creatures there, and is an overall interesting show.

I was never much of a poster to begin with so i don't expect anyone missed me : P but i've been out of the anime loop since 06. I've been browsing the forums to pick up sequals / continuations of things i was/had watching/ed ( Serei no Morbito,
Death Note, Bokurano, D.Grayman, Gash Bell anime/manga, One Piece, Clannad, Kanon, Code Geass, Haruhi Suzumiya, Full Metal Alchemist, Utawarerumono, NGE, Naruto manga, Gintama, and Bleach manga).
Most groups seem to have given up on hellsing ultimate due to cease and desists its a shame but it happens. Berserk subs seem to have stalled.... once again
Anyway the point of this thread is what else animes from later part of 2006 to the present would you consider unmissable? As you can see my tastes are pretty diverse and i'll watch pretty much anything (not a big fan of sports anime but there's always exceptions).
So, i'll continue browsing for goodies but would appreciate your input as well.
*edit* i see the mods saw it fit to move my post to this thread. i considered my request less just a suggestion request and more of a best of these two years discussion (similar to the best of 2006 thread i found) but i can understand the interpretation due to my extranneous information... ohh well guess i'm stuck finding them on my own.

Hey guys, I'm looking for something a little different this time.
I'm looking for a series I can watch with my roommate. She has specified that she wants to watch an anime with 'cute creatures'. I would like it to be an anime that I won't hate. So, that means no pokemon or anything like that. I thought maybe Denno Coil would fit, but she said it would probably be too scary for her. Any suggestions?
Ryllharu already covered a lot of good "cute" series, but i have a few suggestions of my own.
Magical Doremi (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=888) is essentially 3 young girls who discovered a witch and became her apprentice
Daa! Daa! Daa! (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=351) is about a young girl and boy who are forced to live together due to circumstances. They discovered a lost alien baby along with his robot cat baby sitter, since the ship is broken, the 2 must take care of the baby until he can find a way home.
Kaleido Star (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=635): This one doesn't really feature any cute creatures, but it's a good shoujo anime that might interest your roomate (i don't think you will hate it either). It's about a young girl who aspires to become a Circus Acrobat.
I also have to second Ryllharu Ai Baby recommendation, Yuzuyu is just too darn cute.

I've been looking for something to watch since none of the new series seem to interest me.
I've been going through Anidb myself but it's somewhat hard to find something decent with so many series.
I'll pretty much watch any genre except yaoi, but i'm not in the mood to watch something sad, so no tragedy please.
The most important criteria is the main character, no hyper, annoying, idiotic twat like Naruto or Dan from Basquash please. Moping emo like Zed from Kiba is no good either. It would also help if the series is a bit less well known since i'd likely watched it if it was popular. Having a catchy OP would also help a lot.
That's about it, thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Crest of the Stars, Banner of the Stars I,II and III
I always recommend this first when someone wants to go beyond average shounen fare. This is probably my most favorite anime. It has amazing direction, unparalleled wit and dialogue, great story, and lovable smart characters. Art is crap and no catchy opening though.
Fantastic Children
Terribly underrated. Deep, mysterious story with great characters. Don't let the simple art fool you.
Kurau - Phantom Memory
Another great one that does not get the attention it deserves. Has very slight Yuri vibes, which was a plus for me.
Jungle wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu
Probably one of the funniest (and weirdest) anime out there, again underrated. Trust me, you don't know anime humour until you know what a Pokute is.
I won't overload you with titles since that will only confuse you. Give these ones a try first.

@Dark Dragon - I'm impressed that you have seen those already. Since I managed to only give you one, how about:
Gun X Sword - Main character is bent on revenge, so some emo-ness is present, but he is hardly moping. Good mecha and fighting action.
Spiral - Suiri no Kizuna - The anime doesn't really finish the story, but I think the manga is done, so you can just continue from there. Main character is intelligent, and the story involves a lot of outsmarting the enemy.
Maria-sama ga miteru (all seasons)- Just wanted to throw this in there. If you really do watch all genres, you might also enjoy this yuri classic. Nice calm slice of life, with very good drama and interesting characters.
Kannazuki no miko - You have probably seen this, but I will post it anyway. One of the best anime stories told, if it hadn't been ruined by the ugly mecha and inconsistent art. Still, a great watch.
Ichigo Marshmallow - Cute and funny. If you have even the slightest lolicon tendency, watch this. If you don't, it is still worth watching because of the fluffy humour, and Coppola.
EDIT:
I'll throw in:
Speed Grapher - just in case you haven't seen it.

well this season i'm watching
Bakemonogatari
- this one is super artsy. if you like abstract style, and like to fanboy over a popular female character, then you'll like this series.
Canaan
- personally I'm not too impressed with this one. It's just kinda a flashy action that seems to take itself too seriously. but if you're into guns and chicks, then you might like this one.
Sora no Manimani
- a great comedy (i've seen the least amount of episodes for this one). it's a romance/comedy with great characters.
Taisho Yakyuu Musume
- this one's pretty interesting. it's a baseball series set in like the 1920s or something. these girls decide to form a baseball team to play the boys. and it's good so far.
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
- this is by far the most interesting of the season, imo. a giant earthquake hits tokyo. it's got great like social realism, and appears like it's gonna be a sibling bonding anime. it's pretty awesome so far.
Umineko no Naku Koro ni
- dude this one is creepy. it's a horror/mystery about this rich family. it's like twisted, but at the same time addictive O_o.
and i watched the first episode of Kanamemo, but decided not to keep watching...

So what's good this season?
Someone post what they're watching and why pls, i have no idea what's good so far.Princess Lover! - What appears to be the ecchi harem series this season. There appears to be more depth and character development to this than the average harem series. It's a lot more like Shuffle! than it is like Akane-Iro ni Somaru Saka. Nowhere near as serious as White Album, but there is a lot of subtlety to the characters. Girls actively and very purposefully leading the male lead on playing coy, with a bit of humor and a very interesting social class dynamic. This series really came as a surprise in how much better it is turning out than I expected.
Canaan - Contrary to Pandadice, I've been suitable impressed with this one. You would probably recognize Takeuchi Takashi's character design (TYPE-MOON), and the series has some very impressive gunslinger characters, but I almost find the side characters to be more impressive in their own ways. A lot of bad things are about to go down in Shanghai, and you're never really sure what is going on right now, just that two people seem to be in the center of it, while quite a few more are already involved or are about to get dragged into it.
Umineko no Naku Koro ni - If you watched Higurashi (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3574) this series is an absolute given. If you didn't, you'll see why you should have after watching this. A confusing as hell horror/mystery with some pretty gruesome murders all within one very wealthy family on an island. Witchcraft, greed, love, pride and a healthy dose of insanity makes for such fun.
That's really all I picked up this season, aside from Spice and Wolf II, which I am behind on.

Spice and Wolf is about a merchant who runs into a Wolf Spirit, and agrees to accompany her back to her home town up North. Her wisdom helps him profit from his trade, but she also dangerously attracts the Church. The setting is an alternate world similar to Medieval Europe, and it is a story about their journey.
Sudo is probably the best group that subbed S&W. Their rather unhealthy torrent is here:

If you have seen Code Geass, or know of the talented seiyuu in it, Jun Fukuyama (Lelouch) and Ami Koshimizu (Kallen) are also voicing the main characters. Ami in particular, does a fantastic job, one of the best I've heard in fact.
It is partly because of these two that the series is so entertaining despite the lack of action, or dynamic plot.

The interconnectivity of CLAMP is a more recent thing, mostly to coincide with the multiverse in Tsubasa. Only Tsubasa Chronicles and xxxHolic are directly related, and the emphasis is only in the manga.
In anime form, CLAMPs series are generally stand alone (xxxHolic and Tsubasa Chronicles the obvious exclusion). Even then, the xxxHolic anime really doesn't share the same crossover elements.
Whatever you do, you'll gain more enjoyment by watching xxxHolic and Tsubasa Chronicles last. There are loads of references to past series in those two, particularly the latter, but if you haven't seen Card Captor Sakura, you'll probably miss most of the references anyway.

Ryllharu
Thu, 08-20-2009, 06:23 PM
I think it might be that you've never seen it, or at the least only saw the butchered Geneon version broadcast on television. There are a few interesting things about it. Cuteness of the mahou shoujo aside, there is some depth to the series. Nasty love polygons, lots of mystery, and even some stand out features that have yet to really be matched.
- It is interesting to note that Sakura never wears the same costume twice (as far as I could tell). Her friend makes her a new one pretty much every time.
- There is definitely some implied yaoi and yuri relationships. Not something one usually sees in a magical girl show (though Nanoha definitely did the latter it too). Part of the reason the series is so well liked among the AnimeCon crowd years back.
CCS comes off a lot more like xxxHolic to me than it does Pretty Cure. Sailor Moon is actually a rather apt description, because the Sailor Moon manga is a bit more mature than you are probably giving it credit for. I can't say the same about the Sailor Moon anime, the last season was never brought over to the States.
CCS is, like all CLAMP series, sweet on the outside, with undertones of considerably more serious material.

I think most people have ignored your request because we either tried one or the other, and so don't feel right making a recommendation without trying out both sub alternative.
Bakemonogatari: I've only tried gg, and their subs are good as usual. Being such a dialogue intensive anime (and sometimes jokes that naturally get lost in language translation), I can't tell whether they're accurate or not. I suggest you randomly watch an episode with both alternatives to tease out the difference (if you really must have the very best). Personally I'd suggest episode 3.
Cross Game: Subsmith is what I've been watching They're perfectly watchable, but you'll see the occasional typo, as you do with speedsubs. It's not an eyesore, but I notice them when they flick on screen. I can't remember the last time that happened though, so it's often.
That said, I'd go with ANBU just because they should be better at this sort of proof editing.

Since I've dropped more shows this season than I usually have in an entire year, I'm looking to pick up a few to make up for it. So, from the watchers of this show, I'd like your opinions.
Bakemongatari:
gg or wait for Koharubi?
(with Frostii being the obvious archive choice)
Cross Game:
Subsmith or ANBU?
Slower releases is not really an issue for me, I'm looking for the most well-rounded release.
yeah, i have only watched gg for Bakemonogatari, so i wouldn't be able to tell you. But, I can tell you that gg's been leaving commercials in, and it's annoying. so if the other guys aren't doing that then you might go with them. but then, in such a dialogue heavy show, it'd be a shame to miss out on stuff with a bad TL. So, i think i'd wait for Frostii.
on Cross Game, i haven't watched past the 2nd episode, and i honestly can't remember who i got the first two episodes from.. though when I start catching up on it, i'd probably go with ANBU.

Ahoi,
ah, i hope you guys can recommend something along the lines that im describing now:
Basically, im a bit sick of a serieīs main character being rough/edgy in the beginning, but then turning into a shining hero at the end of the story.
Or in other words, i hate how most stories always "teach you a lesson", how itīs better to behave like that or this.
A bit of an example would be Berserk, where Guts never really gives a shit about how he does things, and always gets away with doing so.
Are there other quality series like that? Hopefully, with even more "negative" behaving guys than Guts, whoīs already too much of a good guy by now.
Maybe itīs hard to explain, but there are often series where a main character doesnt behave completely right, then is scolded by another, more mature character, and later on the main character realizes how he was wrong...i want a series, where a main character stays true to his, not completely right, beliefs.

Then there are also Code Geass and Death Note, but you have probably seen those.

Hm, i started He is my Master, but iīd really prefer a more serious story. Code Geass and Death are, of course, well known, though i wouldnt call those 2 shows what i mean. Both those series have a very self-confident main character that never even would have considered to be wrong.
Im more looking for a main character that kinda knows that heīs not perfect but keeps doing it his his way. Yeah, i know, its hard to explain it :)
Im having a blackout at the moment, but there are many series that have a main character that gets scolded in the seriesī beginning, then thinks "damn, why do they always pick on me, damn it", but later on changes and becomes a shining hero. I want a series where the main character doesnt change that way and STILL manages his way through whatever adventure lies ahead of him.

Berserk isn't really the best example...
But you want Anti-heroes?
Darker than Black is a good choice. Hei is a pretty ruthless character.
I'll second Outlaw Star. Gene isn't really a bad guy so much, but he also remains fairly consistent in character. There is development, but not so much of the softening variety. (Bonus is Ayako Kawasumi's debut role.)
Cowboy Bebop goes right along with Outlaw Star.
Hellsing too. Both versions. The Ultimate OVA is a lot better, but the original series is entertaining in its own right. A decent amount of the anime original material fits right along with Alucard's character anyway.
Mezzo (Kite, Mezzo Forte, Mezzo, Kite Liberator). The first two in the list are hentai, but there are censored versions of the two because they action and the story are good enough, and the hentai scene really has no bearing on the plot of Mezzo Forte at all (Kite it is though). Characters with a very punk, anti-hero vibe, be they the assassins in Kite, or the three idiots in Mezzo. None of them are good people when you get down to it, and the animation style is pretty distinctive and nice looking, you can recognize a lot of their OP/ED work.
Scryed The two protagonists are assholes, and they stay assholes. They might turn out to be heroes, it is a standard shonen power-up series after all, but I would hesitate to call them good people.
Nothing else crosses my mind right now, but if Munsu comes around to this thread, he could suggest a lot of good ones for you.
MFauli
Thu, 09-03-2009, 03:39 PM
Im not sure if "anti-heroe" is the right term.
Its more "morons", iīd say. So, im not looking for series with an asshole, becaise assholes can still be skillful, wise, knowledgable and all that.
Im looking for morons, that arent superskillful, that make wrong decisions, that get called out for that, that behave...like a moron, BUT ultimately have good intents.
So Cowboy Bebop and Hellsing definitely dont fit this explanation, as both Spike and Alucard are far from being morons ;)
Ryllharu
Thu, 09-03-2009, 04:17 PM
Then just take Hellsing out. Everyone else is a moron. And Spike is totally a moron.
I'd put more emphasis on Outlaw Star, the Kite/Mezzo series, and Scryed in that case. Especially Mezzo.
shinta|hikari
Thu, 09-03-2009, 08:33 PM
I must say that is a really strange request. A moronic hero that doesn't change? That is a first for me LOL.
Wouldn't Naruto fit the bill? Sasuke is pretty much a moron even now.
Gundam Seed Destiny was mentioned before, and I think that would work too because of Shin Asuka.
Now for a more serious recommendation, Infinite Ryvius might work. The main character is a very weak character that makes constant mistakes, and the story is quite serious. The only problem here would be the art since it is an old series.

for Samurai.. you've got most of the ones that come to my mind on your list already.. how about Sword of the Stranger (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2185)? it's a movie, but it's got some super sweet samurai action. and for another sweet samurai film, there's Princess Mononoke (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=7). also Kurozuka (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=6098) comes to mind. though i didn't think much of it, you might enjoy it.
you really liked Zero no Tsukaima? then try watching Shakugan no Shana (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3408) and see what you think
as for other shows.. how about Kino's Journey (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=575), Earth Maiden Arjuna (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=107), Casshern Sins (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=6032), and maybe Karas (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2179). yeah, check those out and see what you think.

Yuuhi wasn't loli though.
I hesitantly agree. Officially Yuuhi's legal (citation needed), short in the anime, and acts like a spoiled brat for a good part of the anime.
According to wiki:
n the marketing of legal pornography, lolita is used to refer to a neotenic female, frequently one who has only recently reached the age of consent, or appears to be younger than the age of consent. Usually overlaps with 'barely legal'.
She does have a (small) rack, so she's not pre-pubescent, but the art fluctuates so much it's hard to tell when it actually counts.

Keitaro? He is at first...but he's not really that bad. The resident's behavior exaggerates it. As much as I liked Love Hina, I can't bring myself to watch it again.
1) The anime is pretty bad compared to the manga (not Negima manga to anime bad, but the story doesn't get finished even with all the movies)
2) I realized the entire premise and the dynamic of the main romance are a complete and utter ripoff of Maison Ikkoku (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=288). Just change some ages and genders around and a healthy dose of ecchi.

Yes, that much is obvious (particularly since everything we have written down is about Rie Kugimiya), so I didn't feel the need to write it down.
Love Hina presents a harem-romance story, and it does it well. It isn't ground breaking, but it is well worth watching if you do not dislike harem anime. Most of the cliches as we call it nowadays were started (or at least popularized) by Love Hina.

Try these
Bakemonogatari - Main guy helps everyone out, so he can't be worthless by definition
Clannad - Same as the one above
Chrome Shelled Regios - Main guy is just absurdly strong
Isekai Seikishi Monogatari - Main guy is even stronger than the one above, relative to the rest of the cast
Utawarerumono - Main guy is really smart, and charismatic enough to have practically the entire female cast fall for him.
GunXSword - Not really the usual harem setting (no school etc.), but the main guy is pretty bad ass, and looks like a cowboy but uses a sword. Has mecha.
Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure - Mecha anime. Main guy can be a wuss, but is the best pilot in the show.
Maburaho - Main guy starts out a wimp, but has many cool moments when he manages to use his power. Think Zero no Tsukaima.
EDIT: and before I forget, yes, these are all harem.

The Love Hina anime honestly isn't that good. I think the reason it's so popular is because it's the right series that came out at the right time.
But to add to shinta list, since he already added a spin-off, try out the Tenchi muyo series if you haven't. It's a harem theme with a rather competent main character.

Non worthless male lead harem (some of which you have probably already seen):
Ai Yori Aoshi - Kaoru doesn't really have a choice to make given the premise, but he is far from worthless and has strong determination.
Chrome Shelled Regios - Layfon is badass.
Nagasarete Airantou - Ikuto holds his own against girls and animal (most who are are stronger than him).
Sekirei - While Minato might seem useless, he's actually one of the strongest of the male characters in the show. Determined and caring, similar to Ai Yori Aoshi's lead.
Shuffle! - In terms of male leads and how they act, Rin is one of my favorites. One of the few leads to deserve the harem that falls into his lap, similar to the way Layfon is in Regios.
Kanon - Yuuichi is the same way as the leads of Sekirei and Ai Yori Aoshi.
Ranma 1/2 - While he might not be the manliest of heroes given his tendency to crossdress, Ranma isn't worthless by any stretch of the imagination.
Tenchi - I haven't seen all of it, but in the movie where he goes back in time to save his mother was pretty good back in the day.
Vandread - Hibiki can come off as a bit of a whiner in certain parts, but he's trying to reach the pinnacle of being GAR like Kamina from Gurren Lagaan (before that existed). It's hard to blame him when he had literally never seen a woman before the series started.
Utawarerumono - shinta already covered this quite well.

Can we add an extra filter to this? Say, harem with a good main character and an actual plot ( meaning i would need to watch more than just the first and last episodes to get what's going on )
Dark Dragon

Everything on that list has a decent plot with the exception of Ranma 1/2 which i meant to be episodic comedy anyway.
You could also avoid Ai Yori Aoishi since the story is pretty standard harem fare. I personally think it's a pretty decent series despite being generic.
Nagasarete Airantou is probably another one to avoid since it's a pretty similar style to stuff like Ranma and To Love Ru.

How about something full of action to counter all this romance streak i've been on lately? Can anyone suggest something fairly recent and Dragon Ball - like?

If you watch Chrome Shelled Regios, you get both, a harem with quite a bit of action and an actual plot. It kind of has an inconclusive ending though, but it makes a second season possible.
There is also Kaze no Stigma. Lots of magic powers and action, a bad ass main character and a fairly decent plot.
I actually don't want to recommend anything Dragonball-like since I really don't like that show, but Blue Dragon has the same art, and is very action oriented.

I'll try Kaze no Stigma but i think i'll pass on Blue Dragon, the ratings for it on Anidb are pretty low...

Yes, it absolutely sucks IMO. I never even got past a few episodes.

Kaze no Stigma's story is somewhat negligible, but it has one of the best male main characters. Especially in combination with the tsundere love interest girl (the other main character). This dude kicks so much ass and is so powerful that the tsundere has zero chances to display the typical violence in the tsuntsun mode and is thus constantly frustrated.
I like the series a lot because of this very thing.

Koi Kaze
Ef memories/melodies
oh yeah, and iirc Rec (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3656) was a pretty good serious romance.

Serious romance animes...
Highly recommended:
Bokura ga Ita
Itazura na Kiss
NANA (several relationships)
Ai Baby (the Kokoro parts)
Ef memories/melodies
Futari Ecchi (the OVAs are mostly about sex, not going to lie, but at the same time it's about newlyweds learning to compromise and support each other) (edit: on second thought this one is probably not appropriate for the question asked)
Paradise Kiss (more of a tryst, but it is another mature relationship)
Suzuka (say what you want about the main character, but it is a romance series)
True Tears
Be sure to watch Kimi no Todoke this season.

Kare Kano, but it happens in a high school (which is okay, because it's pretty realistic)

Kare Kano, but it happens in a high school (which is okay, because it's pretty realistic)Except the anime isn't that great. The cast is wonderful, the story is good...and they forget who the main characters are and the entire second half of the series ignores them and covers the arcs of the secondary characters. A full half of the story remained unfinished.
21 total manga volumes, and the anime cuts off early in volume 7. It is a great supplement to the manga, but as a stand alone it is not that great.

Can you be a little more specific? The vast majority of the series listed in this thread fit either of those descriptions.

I'm thinking of watching Darker than Black so i can follow the current second season, but the first couple of episodes had a real "Black Lagoon" feel to them and i found that anime depressing as hell. Should i keep watching or was my first assessment correct?

Nah, you should definitely watch it. Darker than Black, in my opinion, doesn't really contain elements that would likely make people detest it. It's not all sunshine for sure but I doubt you'd require that from a seinen series anyway. Black Lagoon is like a criminal A-Team on steroids but Darker than Black aims for a more subdued atmosphere. People die in it, but that's only a good thing.

For me, Black Lagoon died with the awesome murderous incest twins
Well that and the fact that i was expecting something of a realistic look on the underground world and then found myself in this weird universe of super women with guns
At least DtB is honest about the fact that the heros are super humans and the whole mystery surrounding them keeps me going for the next episode

Black Lagoon was meant to be inspired by John Woo style movies. Over the top is just that series' stock-in-trade.
The twins don't even hold a candle to the current arc in the manga.
DtB is very episodic until the latter half of the series, so keep that in mind too.

Hm, question:
I watched Night Head long time ago, but only until ep 10 or such. It somehow didnt get anywhere and thus became boring to me.
Would be great if someone who watched the whole thing could say if the series overall is great or not so great.
Personally, i loved the more realistic supernatural-powers approach (in contrast to Darker than Black, which i didnt like because of that).
thanks

If I'm going to pick one, should I marathon the Slam Dunk anime or manga?

Sorry for the late response. I would not have imagined Ryll would pass up the chance to reply to you so I decided to refrain from doing so. The manga is better, since you can breeze your way through the draggy parts. There is an episode in the anime that only takes up 3 seconds or so of actual game time, so that should be indicative of how slow and dragging it can get.
I have a cousin (who really exists and isn't me) who loves yuri anime. Unfortunately, I have already given her a lot of yuri stuff, including the following:
All Maria sama seasons
Strawberry Panic
Kannazuki no Miko
Kasimasi
Aoi Hana
Kanamemo?
Maria Holic?
Can anyone recommend something with yuri (and has finished airing even if it isn't predominantly yuri)? I am thinking about Uta Kata, but I don't remember enough of it to be sure of it actually had Yuri.
