Adding to the classics list:
Kaze no Yojimbo
Ranma 1/2
Gunslinger Girls
Twelve Kingdoms
Shadow Skill
Licensed by Royal
Rahxephon
Blue Gender
Twin Spica
Slam Dunk
Touch
Urusei Yatsura
Hunter X Hunter
VanDread
Green Green
Golden Boy
Trigun
I haven't seen all of them, so just go read some of the descriptions and see if any of those look like something you might be interested in.
My sister needs some recommendations and I'm pretty clueless on the one's I've already suggested. She has watched FMA, and thought it was OK, Naruto and stopped during the fillers. She's a really big fan of Hunter X Hunter, and has watched the whole TV series, OVA and the current manga scanlations. She wants more along the Hunter X Hunter drift, and says she really was in love with the friendship between Gon and Killua as it seemed really realistic. She's not into shounen ai however, so anybody wanna lend a helping hand with a recommendation or two? I suggested her One Piece but she got bored of it after 4-5 episodes, and I told her it gets a ton better but she says she'll probably give it another chance in the future, just not yet.
Aside from the ones comp recommended, I would try Get Backers, it at least has some of that friendship your sister seems to enjoy.

I'm not really in the mood for sci-fi, but LOTGH, Stellvia and Last Exile seem interesting. I agree that Cowboy Bebop is great.
@Munsu: Great stuff man, most of those seem to be exactly what I'm looking for. Hope I can find most of them.

I'd second the GetBackers recommendation for a girl. I know a little coven of female anime fans and they all swear by Get Backers.

Have her try Hikaru no go, great anime, has the rival buddy thing going and some good emotioal parts to it as well.

Hi,
I probably missed the threads speaking about it, but I was seeking anime targeted at a more adult audience.
I do not mean ecchi and so on.
The anime I've seen that are almost in this category :
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
Maison Ikkoku (when you focus on the atmosphere, on the true problems behind humor)
Honey and Clover (same as Maison Ikkoku)
Death Note in it"s way
Ayakashi (some very nice stories)
Kurau Phanthom memory
I admitt I have difficulties explaining clearly what I seek.
It's just that high school anime aren't really my cup of tea, as they tend to copy one another, and evolve in a quite childish world.
The anime I've mentioned are more in the age from late teenagehood to adulthood...
I wonder if there are quality anime taking place in the adult world
Thanks for any input

Thankfully for you and people like you (myself included), there has been a trend in the last few years in anime to more seriously explore mature themes. The best example of this to my mind would be Monster. That should be very entertaining to you, given what you are looking for. I would reccomend you start with that. I also notice Cowboy Bebop is not on your list of anime. That's a shame. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (~when the cicadas cry~) should also have some appeal as a more mature piece, if you can get past the "childish" art style. Hope this helps!

I guess this trend is following the audience, that grew up... Although we may sometimes consider the vintage Captain Harlock show wasn't really for kids.
You're right for Higurashi, the childish characters may be a problem.
Cowboy Bebop isn't my type of anime, but I may give it a try... since when something is really good, it may surpass it's classification and interrest me.
Monster? I've seen some eps in my native language, I have to say I was quite interrested. I may also give it a try.
Thanks a lot for your inputs, that helps opening my mind ;)

There is a distinction in the business between Shouenen and Seinen (Boy and Man) and between Shoujo and Josei (Girl and Woman). In manga, intrestingly enough, a good part of this distinction is drawn on whether or not Furigana (sp?), reading aids, are presented to help readers deal with complicated or vague Kanji.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seinen
I think one problem is what you mean by 'targeted' towards adults. Surely some shows like Bokurano (see my sig), Now and Then Here and There, and others have a more 'serious' tone to them.... But where would a show like Gundam SEED fall? (More violence than previous Gundam series, but disposed to fanservice and focus on high-octane battles). A show like Evangelion also blurs the lines.
although, if this is a trend or not, who knows? One thing is for sure, and it's that the most watched animes in Japan are almost all shows clearly targeted for children (Shin Chan, Pokemon, etc). This strongly suggests, to me, that MORE anime will be created targeted toward younger audiences. Also, alot of the anime that is popular on this board appear in obscure, seldomly viewed time slots (Death Note airing at 1am in Japan while many here considered it a 'prime' anime of the season).

I think I understand your point.
Our picture of the anime industry is biased, probably due to our liking.
Maybe I just seek anime with stories happening in the adult world. And I understand
this may not be mainstream anime, as the fanbase can be very small. But I'll continue
to search ;)

Munsu named the best ones. The ones that I liked the most were, Beck, Black Lagoon, Ergo Proxy, Monster, and Twelve Kingdoms. But I just wasn't as attracted to the Berserk anime, the manga is what you should check out.
And three that I can think of right now are, Gungrave, Kino no Tabi, and Mushishi.

I admitt I have some sort of allergy towards the manga format...
Please make sure you do not double post. I know it's annoying to use the 'Edit' and copy and paste stuff from wherever you are using the 'Quote' function, but please do it, because it's also annoying to go around Merging people's double posts.
Also, I'm sure he would have also added 'Bokurano' to the list if he was watching it.

while berserk was more of an adult themed it didn't get even quite as dark as the little bit of the manga that i read through.... i still have to get around to catching up o0n the manga when i get time, the anime totally disappointed with its mere 25 or 26 eps

My personal opinion on the Berserk Anime is that it's not worth watching unless you read the manga to be honest. Pretty much just because of where it ends and the fact that there's amongst other things a missing character which will make no sense if you try to pick up the manga from after the point of where the anime ends.
The other suggestions seem good, Black lagoon is fantastic, the ghost in the shell series just oozes of quality and good plots and Claymore is going very strongly in the right direction.

I just finished Kimi ga Nozomu Eien and now I want to watch more shows with this kind of theme. Basically I'm looking for some good drama's or romances without heavy reliance on comedy. Some comedy is fine, but not something I'll be expecting to laugh at in every episode.
Ryllharu
Sun, 07-15-2007, 10:57 PM
Finding series comparable to Kimi ga Nozomu Eien is actually a lot harder than it sounds. Luckily, having been asked this in the past, I've got a few.
Bokura ga Ita: Right to the top of this list is this recent series with pretty simplified animation. Do not let it dissuade you, as it turned out of be a romance series that had so much a realistic feel to it, you get caught up into Nanami and Yano's feelings quite easily. Easily the best choice in what you're looking for. Just don't read the manga excerpt Triad attached (it's the true ending, and continuation that most of us will never get to read).
Suzuka: Yes, the series starts out fairly stupid, has a few scenes and characters who are of little use but fanservice, but it actually turns out of be a fairly serious and [somewhat] realistic romance series. Yamato is still a wishy-washy male lead (no where near as bad as Takayuki) but he has a refreshing determination to his pursuit of the female lead.
Elfen Lied: I'm probably going to get shit for this one, but I really enjoyed the romance aspect amidst all the gore in this series. I found their strained and awkwardly distance relationship quite moving.
Honey and Clover: Another slice of life series with a romance element and less of an art degree (ironically taking place in an art school). It relies a lot more on humor than Bokura ga Ita, but it gets very serious by the end of season 2. A good choice if you're missing the comedy relief supplied by AyuAyu and MayuMayu.
Saikano: Depressing sad sci-fi romance series. Mediocre art and horribly depressing ending a must.
Strawberry Panic!: If you're into yuri, look no further. If you're willing to go to yuri for a fairly serious romance series (with enough comic relief to make the drama hit harder) look here. If yuri isn't your thing, avoid at all costs.
NANA: There's a lot of romances in Nana, and more overall drama as well. A long series about two women, both named Nana, the connections, relationships, and careers that surround them. Lots of drama here, romance...sortof. It's of the same caliber that KgNE is, but without a singular romance that runs the course of the series.

Detective Conan (yes, i've seen almost all 450+)
the Melty Blood series (forgot what it was called :P)

Since you liked the Melty Blood series (Tsukihime), then you should check out the other type-moon series, Fate/stay-night.

Hmm, Im not sure about that. If its the games, I would agree, but the two animes have a very different feel, and are quite unrelated.
Im thinking a vampire anime would be more apt, like Blood +.
Fate Stay Night is still a good watch though, with a great ending I must say. But like always, Id recommend playing the game instead of watching the anime.
Ryllharu
Tue, 07-24-2007, 06:12 AM
I've heard Fate/Stay Night and Tsukihime actually take place in the same universe believe it or not.
If you do want a new series like Tsukihime, you can look forward to the first of several Kara no Kyoukai movies later this year. It's the precursor to Tsukihime, staring a woman named Shiki, who is far more accomplished than the boy Shiki at killing things with the death lines. The red-haired witch in Tsukihime is also related to one of the other characters.
But since that is a while off, it's not much of a recommendation. I wouldn't advocate Blood+ though. Compared to the movie it's based on, it's downright awful. Horrible pacing, slow, and repeated plot (within it's own series no less!).
I would suggest a much older series like Arc the Lad. It's got a similar feel to the overall effect of Tsukihime. Starts out rather innocently, only to turn rather dark around the middle.
Elfen Lied is of course, another obvious choice. Violent, deep story, and a little forbidden romance.
Maybe it's because I watched them around the same time, but RahXephon is a decent compliment to Tsukihime. It's a mecha, but has pretty dark twists later on in the series.
I'll add Pumpkin Scissors for the same reason, though it is a post-war action series and not a mecha.

Woot kara no kyoukai movies are coming!!
Havent seen arc the lad though, Ill give that a try.
Blood+ is not one of my favorites, but its definitely not as bad as ryll makes it sound. Some people really like it too. Most people also comment that the movie is subpar compared to the show, and I tend to agree with them. BUT, the negative comments about the show are true, but it still has its good points I believe.

I am always looking for new series to watch, because I tend just to find one I like and not watch any others in fear of not liking them. (I'm weird - don't ask.) I tend to like any type of anime, yet the only thing tying all of them together is some fantasy element. My favorites are: Cardcaptor Sakura, Fruits Basket, G Gundam, and Paranoia Agent. I've always want to watch another mecha anime but I don't know which ones are good.

If you havent seen most of the mecha mentioned above or evangelion, Soukyuu no Fafner would be a good choice. I really like that show, except for some crappy dialogue. Many dislike it because of its similarity with other shows, so maybe you should try it while you are still "unsoiled".

You're better off with older titles, but I can pump out a comprehensive list of obscure titles.
Kenran Butoh Sai: The Mars Daybreak - Underwater pirate mecha on Mars!
Good Witch of the West - Not really my thing, it was okay, but it's obscure and pretty different. It's a romance I guess.
Mahoromatic - Not so obscure, but worth the mention. Alien-slaying robot becomes the maid of a young boy during her final days of life.
2x2 Shinobuden - Totally pointless wacky ninja action.
Bokura Ga Ita - Really good romance series. You may have seen it, but it never really garnered that much attention.
ARIA - Apparently Kraco and I are the only two fans of this Slice of Life series.
Final Approach - Short series, 15 minute episodes of a government enforced marriage and a bit of a harem.
Iketeru Futari - Another 15 minute episode series. Pervert attempts to seduce the cute girl in school. Through perseverance, succeeds. (The manga goes on quite a bit further)
Grenadier - Samurai/Guns action. Heroine reloads using her considerable "assets."
Hyper Police - One of my favorite series actually. Bounty hunters in a world where monsters and humans coexist.
Jubei-chan - wacky storyline about a young girl who inherits the fighting skills of the famous swordsman Yagyuu Jubei through a Lovely Eyepatch. (There is also a season 2).
Izumo -Takeki Tsurugi no Senki- - So-so series, based off an h-game. Classmates get transported to a different world.
Mezzo: Danger Service - spin-off series of the hentai movie Mezzo Forte. The movie is actually very good and should be watched first. They're pretty much a mercenary service. Whatever the client requests.
Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru - Not that obscure, but a harem series disguised as a yuri series. It was actually pretty funny. One of the better tsundere characters out there.
Outlaw Star - Similar to Cowboy Bebop, was overshadowed by it and Trigun because they are from the same couple of years. Space outlaws.
Otogizoushi (Heian Arc) - Absolutely visually stunning series by Production I.G. Minamoto no Raiko, a famous samurai well-known for his archery skills, is dispatched to recover a legendary gem in 972 A.D. He falls ill, and his sister disguises herself in his place. (The latter half of the series, eps 15-26 take place in modern day and are not that entertaining.)
Rizelmine - Another government enforced marriage series. A "baby wife" is forced upon a middle school boy. Well noted for having one of the most abusive relationships between main characters. It's supposed to be comedic, but after a while...
Sorcerer Hunters - Fantasy-Adventure series, much like Slayers, but with an S&M undertone. Pretty funny actually.
Starship Operators - What I consider the most realistic spaceship fighting in anime. Day long capital ship approaches leading to very in-depth strategies, and actual battles usually ending in a single, devastating shot. Contains political intrigue.
Triangle Heart - The OVA series that led to the eventual spin-off series Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. Nanoha's older brother and sister are martial arts specialists, and are assigned to bodyguard a friend of theirs.
Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito - Hatsuki is a high school girl living alone with her classmate, Hatsumi, who she has a huge crush on. On Hatsumi`s 16th birthday, she is suddenly surrounded by green light and disappears in front of Hatsuki. She manages to follow Hatsumi ending up in a place called the Great Library, which is full of different worlds stored in books.

Downloading Kenran Butoh Sai, Hyper Police, Starship operators and Otogizoushi.
Hmm, I have doubts about Final Approach, Iketeru Futari, Mezzo, Izumi, and Triangle Heart. Though Ive heard of them, I never downloaded these before since it seems to be H or harem and nothing else.
Ive seen the rest. Thanks for the suggestions. This should keep me occupied for maybe 3 days after downloading.
EDIT - Kurogane communcation seems really... not good. Cant seem to find blue legend shoot, I watch angel heart, but City hunter, maybe next time.
Downloading Betterman, and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. I cant find a torrent for Heat guy J, can someone help?
Ill download licensed royal, and maybe Legend of galactic heroes when I have the space, since its huge. The others Ive seen, and most of them I remember were pretty good. Thanks for the great titles as well.

You've seen everything on my list? Damn, you're good.
BTW, Triangle Heart is not harem... has some good action. Final Approach is harem, but it's short episodes (10 minutes each) fairly enjoyable.
Mezzo DSA doesn't have any H... just the prequel. You can always find the edited version, since it has no H in it... great action though.

Definitely do not discount Mezzo Forte or the other h-movie by the same director, Kite. In Mezzo Forte (different from Mezzo, the series), the hentai seems tacked on, and it's almost completely irrelevant to the story, but as Munsu said, the action is really great. It's a violent and occasionally gory movie, but it's fairly outstanding as anime action films go. It's also pretty funny in an oddball way, a trait inherited by Mezzo: DSA.
In Kite, the hentai plays a big part in the development of the heroine's character. It's necessary to see what she's become from who she used to be. I don't believe there was ever an edited version of Kite like there is for Mezzo Forte. If you're generally turned off by all hentai, then they're not for you. In these two films, hentai definitely takes a secondary role.

For Blue Legend Shoot, you'd probably need the japanese name... Aoki Densetsu Shoot.
And Kurogane Communication is pretty good. 10 minute episodes, and the later half of the series has a pretty interesting plot and action.

Hey, dont get mo wrong. Im not turned off by Hentai, since I am a guy. I just dont want to watch a long series with nothing but fanservice when I could have spent the time watching the other stuff you guys suggested. If you guys say that much, Ill give those stuff a try.
And I watched Kite, and loved it. Not only because but also due to the Hentai.
EDIT: Being able to understand and speak Japanese, Im embarassed to say I didnt consider the title Blue Legend Shoot as Aoki Densetsu Shoot. It translates so directly I feel like an idiot. Im going to download it now.
Just saw that the songs for triangle heart are from KOTOKO, thus I am downloading them now. If this keeps up, I will end up watching all of the stuff I havent seen yet on the above lists.
Apparently, I was mistaken about final approach. I have seen it before, and it was fairly interesting.

Go to AniDB and click on the Calendar. http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=latestanimes
Adjust dates as necessary.
There's a couple blogs around that have really good reviews of upcoming season, but those are more seasonal posts and sometimes specific to the writers' tastes.

http://randomc.animeblogger.net/
Is probably the most popular and well done anime blog from my experience, they do a quick paragraph preview/review of each series, comment on whether or not they will continue commenting on it once it starts, etc. You have to keep in mind that they post synopses of currently airing series, so you don't want to get spoiled. Unfortunately, it is guess and check when they do the preview for the season. They've got a lot more links to other anime blogs down at the bottom, which I cannot say I've ever been to.
http://www.andrewlb.com/fansub/pukiwiki.php?Fall%202007
This one never seems to have spoilers, but all the links are to the official sites, so unless you know Japanese, it's up to you to figure out what each one is about. Gets more accurate as the season approaches. Eventually tells you what subbers are planning to pick it up, and later which ones are actually doing it.
http://www.mahou.org/Showtime
No better site if you want to know what's airing when. New shows don't appear until they are close to airing, but it's a good way to gauge when new series are starting and when to start looking for subs.

the only currently airing shows that I'm watching that I really recommend are:
Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei (link in my sig)
A comedy about a suicidal teacher and his class full of crazy students. It's very fast and sometimes dark humor, and lots of quick references on the side to other anime and Japanese culture.
Bokurano
Giant mecha meets "slice of life" meets tragedy. It's really a story about a group of children and their lives and convictions. Not big on action, it's a rather dark and sometimes depressing show that focuses on weaving a bunch of smaller stories into a larger, all-encompassing fight for survival.
Claymore
It's the bomb, trust me.
Mononoke
only two episodes out, it's a classical horror show with a very different art style. Miscellaneous demons and ghosts and hunting of.
can't think of many more that are currently airing that I'd recommend right now. I know people like Nodame Cantabile and Kenichi, but I haven't seen them.

Haha, whoa, there's a lot there. My monthly download quota's not very generous, so I can only manage a couple of shows every week. I'm mainly looking to some that are airing soon or recently aired to fill in the ones that are ending soon, or in a while.
Currently watching: Claymore (yeah, I agree 100%, it's the bomb. :D), Darker than Black (that too), Galaxy Railways II, Devil May Cry, El Cazador, Kyou Kara Maou and Naruto Shippuuden. (can't say the same for this one, just tagging along with flickering hopes for the future.)

Some were pretty interesting, like Mars daybreak, Heat guy J and Aoki Densetsu Shoot, but stuff like Betterman made me feel I was better off not watching. There's always Ebichu the Housekeeping Hamster, dirtiest anime I've ever seen that was actually broadcast.
Not sure I suggested it last time, Galaxy Angel. There's several seasons of it, and it's mostly just one slapstick scene after another. 1st season has a really catchy OP.
If you can ever find the 80's classic (beyond the 12 or so eps subbed a few years ago), Cat's Eye, I'll be impressed.
I assume you've seen Scyred, if not, it's a decent shonen diversion.
You're Under Arrest has gotten somewhat obscure lately. But probably big enough that you've seen it. Police comedy/drama.
Tenshi na Konamaiki. I can't say I've seen the anime, but the manga is pretty funny. It's a gender bender, in the same vein of Ranma 1/2, only permanent, and less wackiness.
Speaking of Ranma 1/2, Takahashi's older title, Maison Ikkoku was very good. The manga is one of my favorites, and I believe the anime was a fairly well done adaptation.
You've probably seen them, but Gatekeepers and Gatekeepers 21 were good titles as well.
I'm out of ideas for now.

Hey all. I Have been watching anime for about 2 years, and I'm having trouble finding new series that I want to watch. Here are the ones that I have watched:
Naruto (1 - 26, then I got bored)
Bleach (a few eps here and there, but I WILL be watching more)
FLCL (One Of My Favorites)
The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya (Another one of my favorites)
Neo Genesis Evangelion (the one I am currently watching)
Full Metal Alchemist (Ok.... but not my favorite)
Kenshin (again not my favorite, but ok)
Any recommendations are welcome. Thanks!
EDIT: Started watching Murder Princess, not really my type of anime but I really like it for some reason. I think the best part is that it's a 5 OVA series. Nice and short compared some other animes (Naruto, with like 80000 eps)

for gonzo : there are about 100 good eps after 26 of naruto... maybe give it another chance.
for gonzo and others :
Outlaw Star (subbed of course... dub if you like it)
Inuyasha
Full Metal Alchemist (if you haven't seen this, you need to. One of the best series' ever)
Gundam Wing (so good)
I wont recommend anymore at this time.

FLCL (One Of My Favorites)
The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya (Another one of my favorites)
This pair makes me absolutely recommend "Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei". I'm not a big fan of comedic anime, but this one is zany and crazy like FLCL, but full of crazy characters like Haruhi.
Neo Genesis Evangelion (the one I am currently watching)
If you like Evangelion (or mecha at all) I'd recommend 8th MS Team, arguably the best of the Gundam series ever. If you're still in the realm of wanting some crazy futuristic, apocalyptic mecha, try out Zegapain or Rahxephon
And, whether you like mecha or not, you should watch Code Geass.

Ryllharu
Thu, 09-06-2007, 09:22 AM
Lucky Star, Excel Saga and Pani Poni Dash are reference shows that are all comedy. The exact same vein as Azumanga.
2x2 Shinobuden is all stupid jokes and perverted comments. Quite funny.
There's some drama in Mahoraba, but it's mostly multiple personality disorder comedy and drunken, worthless apartment neighbors.
Galaxy Angel You don't even really need to thing about anything in this franchise. A very light comedy series.
Ebichu the Housekeeping Hamster. Very perverted (very bad art masking hentai with out of frame shots), but hands down the funniest anime series I've ever seen. The trademark joke: "What does spring make you think of? Chestnuts (kuri) and Squirrels (risu) . Put them together and what do you get?" ( 'and' in Japanese is 'to' ) [puns hidden]

Hi, I'm here to get some advice on what are the good anime series that are worth buying the DVDs (preferably those that have complete releases available). Reason being, due to various different circumstances, I'm no longer downloading anime and so I'm trying to find new series to watch on DVDs. Something like that.
I currently own GITS, Samurai Champloo and Otogizoshi (although I don't really think this is very nice, bought it on a whim without knowing anything about the storyline). Intend to buy Nodame and Code Gaess once they are licensed and out (god knows how long that will take), since the reviews on them are excellent.
It's going to be tough paying for something I've never watched before, so will need you guys' help here. Many thanks in advance! ^^
Ryllharu
Thu, 09-20-2007, 08:45 PM
If you own Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop is a must. The two series were often compared, and the dub on Bebop is phenomenal, even better than the original Japanese track. I snapped up the Black Lagoon special edition dvds for a similar reason, the dub is very well done (excessive cursing and better use of the mangled American expressions in the Japanese).
I mostly only buy series I really love, or are old enough that you can't find anywhere else. Iria, Sorcerer Hunters, Nadesico, Makoto Shinkai films, etc. Your situation isn't really the same, since I use the fansubs as the sole determinant of whether the series is worth committing up to $200 on. I can't really tell you what to buy, since you shouldn't really put money into something you may hate. However, we all make mistakes when buying anime, and I've got more than my own share of Volumes 1 and 2 of series I never intend to buy the rest of.
Unfortunately, a lot of the really great review sites are gone. In my dvd buying days, before I found fansubs, I relied almost entirely on scifi.com's Anime Channel. It was taken out when they revamped their site years ago, but it had some excellent unbiased reviews on both subtitles and dub versions separately (yes, this was also the time period of VHS anime).
Though AnimeNewsNetwork is one of the most prominent site for Region 1 anime dvds, I really can't find them reliable anymore. Their method of reviewing dvds as stand alone volumes sickens me. A series shouldn't be judged solely by 3-5 episodes. They often just randomly review a release, even if it's in the middle of a series they've never reviewed before. They herald Chevalier D'eon as if it's one of the greatest series ever made, though in truth it lost momentum dramatically towards the end of the series. They've been accused in their own forums as being paid off for it (since they had an enormous ad for it as part of their site for a few months).
Rather, try www.animeondvd.com. They're considered a good site (one I can not say I've used too extensively). Generally unbiased, they give very in depth reviews of each release on a series (including the functionality of the dvd in terms of menus). You have to browse through what they have. Coupled with a site like AniDB (http://anidb.net), that has more precision than an A through F scale of grading the substance of a series, you can get a good idea of whether it is worth watching, much less purchasing.
You'll have to do with those two sites and similar ones what I had to do on scifi.com. Read a ton of reviews from multiple sources, the negative ones, the blatantly biased ones, and filter through to see if you really want to spend hard earned cash on a series you may or may not like.
EDIT: Anime-Planet (http://www.anime-planet.com/reviews/) is another one to try. Fewer dvd-specific reviews, but they're pretty comprehensive with them as well.
On a side note, I really liked the first 14 (give or take an eps) episodes of Otogizoshi. The Heian arc is some of the best produced stylized anime I've seen. The present-day arc is utterly forgettable, and brings the rest of the series down.

I m a fan of animes with good fighting scenes and mechas
i like Full metal panic TSR very(!) much because it is well animated and the last 4 episodes were simply awesome
the humour and "love-story" is very good too but what is most important to me is the animation... i dont like it when movements are repeated like in Gundamn Seed Destiny.
i ve alrdy watched Burst Angel (here again the last ~5 episodes were great), NGE and Gundam Seed destiny (after seeing the first 10 episode it got boring since it was allways the same movement with different weapons or mechas.)
but... are there any other animes out there which could interest me? to be honest it doesn't really have to include mechas but i like it when the main protagonist is actually a badass and underestimated (maybe like in Kaze no Stigma or even Naruto? well badass doesn't really fit in there but ..well...)
so as a summary: are they any other animes out there like Full Metal Panic! TSR ? (good animation and action(very important)/mechas(if possible)/love-story/funny/badass(make that cool)protagonist)
sry 4 my bad english-skills :P

This one is a tough one to get one's head around. The simplistic shonen formula series are there, but you also liked Ai Baby. I'll get to that in a minute. Lucky Star, Azumanga, and Ouran makes me think of a few.
Seto no Hanayome (just ended), Mahoraba (a few years ago), Nodame Cantabile (two seasons back), and Honey and Clover (seasons 1 and 2). The art in Nodame and H&C takes some getting used to, but the second two are right up Ouran's alley (without the yaoi parody), and Seto no Hanayome is really crazy. Mahoraba is more on the heartwarming side, but it's still an "eccentric side characters" series.
First thing to pop into my head thinking of Ai Baby, AIR, and Kanon is Bokura ga Ita. A very realistic approach to a romance series. Next is Asatte no Houkou More of a fantasy element to it, which fits well with AIR and Kanon. Then I've got to say ARIA. A slice of life vein that gave me an even more tranquil feeling that Ai Baby gives off.
You suggested Fate/Stay and FMA, so I'll reply with Chrono Crusade. A slightly older series, one I think a lot of people newer to anime haven't seen, but definitely should. You've been around a while, but a lot of people forget about it.
These others don't fit quite so well, but I'll just throw them out. Try Suzuka (bear with it, she is a bitch), Paradise Kiss (I'd suggest Nana, but this is much shorter), Kamichu!, and Uta-kata (if you like Asatte no Houkou).

Does anyone know more animes like Chrno Crusade? (Other than the ones on this list (http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/9334/annws7.png))
I thought it was a really great anime. (And I fucking shed a tear at the end.. seriously.. what is wrong with me?! I didn't even "cry" when my dog died, and yet, I "cry" for an Anime? I must be sick in the head or something..)
Oh and, I'm sorry, Munsu, about the spoiler in one of my previous post, it's just that, I didn't thought there was still someone out there who hadn't seen Death Note.. Considering all the fuss it made.

Well, since I suggested Chrno Crusade in response to Fate/Stay, I should have added Shingetsutan Tsukihime (Lunar Legend Tsukihime) as well. The other TYPE-MOON series, though an inferior adaptation of the game.
Arc the Lad, if you can find it. Series like Chrno Crusade fall into a very small subset of a genre. They all have the same feel to them, but they don't come around too often.
If you want to inject a little more humor, Peacemaker Kurogane. It has a sparse few, really slow parts, but I enjoyed it.
Same goes for Kiddy Grade. It's a lot more sci-fi, but has an adequate dose of humor with its drama. Also one of Aya Hirano's very first roles. The bonus with Kiddy Grade is its sequel/spinoff is on the way.
This is assuming you want action series still. If you want heart-wrenchers, I can give them to you.

Ahoi,
many of my series have ended, so im looking for something new.
If there´s anything from the aniamtion-studio of "Fantastic Children" and "Now and then, Here and There", please tell me.
Other than that, something like Death Note, Eureka Seven or Scrapped PRincess would be nice. Yeah, a nice traditional fantasy series would be nice.

Fantastic Children somewhat reminds me of Nadia: Secret Of Blue Water, so you may want to give that a try. Also, try Kino`s Journey (Kino no Tabi), and Last Exile is another series that shares FC's style in my mind. Last Exile also has the stunning character design of Tony Taka. As for films, try Castle in the Sky (my favorite Miyazaki film) and Howl's Moving Castle (my second favorite).
As for Now and Then, Here and There, Haibane Renmei is more oriented towards a female audience as a slice of life series, and lacks the violence of Now and Then. I got a similar feel towards it though. Nausicaa has a similar art style of a desolated world that Now and Then shares. It also has the war-torn nations. It's only a movie, and as Miyazaki films go, not one my favorites, but it's quite good.
As traditional fantasy series go, many of the ones I listed above fall into that category, but here's a few more (in alphabetical order as I go down my lists):
Arc the Lad - Based off the video game series, but with a new set of characters (the game cast appears in cameo for the most part). Definitely fits into the fantasy element, but with the smallest touch of sci-fi slipped in.
Grenadier - The infamous-a-few-years-ago well-endowed heroine who reloads her weapons with using her...assets. Not the greatest series to ever be written, but it's light and worth the watch, whether for the fanservice, or the over the top fighting.
Hyper Police - A future where humans and monsters intermingle, humankind has become somewhat of an endangered species. Natsuki, a half-human half-nekomata is an apprentice bounty hunter preserving order in this world.
Utawarerumono - The first series that reminded me of Scrapped Princess since the latter aired. In fact, right after finishing Utawarerumono, I rewatched Scrapped Princess for the nostalgia.
Less traditional fantasy series:
Asatte no Houkou - More geared towards slice of life, where a elementary school girl and a college graduate woman switch ages as a result of using a wishing stone shrine.
Otogizoushi (Heian Arc) - This entails only episodes 1-13 of the series. A series with stunning visuals, where the Imperial Court orders Minamoto no Raikou to find and retrieve the sacred jade jewels that promises to restore peace to Kyoto. Raikou, however, also falls ill due to the epidemic. His sister, Hikaru, decides secretly to make the journey in his place.
Outlaw Star - More of a fantasy sci-fi series, it mixes magic, chinese mystics, aliens, and spaceflight to journey across space and to the lost parts of the galaxy.
I should point out that a several of the series I mentioned are older, and given that Now and Then, Here and There is one of your favorites, this should not be a problem. Unfortunately, the "traditional fantasy" genre seemed to largely die after the early 2000s.

I really hope I put this in the right section, because iv never seen someone put something like this in the Anime section.
Anyway, As the title suggests, does anyone have a anime that they would really recommend, im not talking about all of your top 5, I mean you current number 1. Something that is preferably currently airing, and that has a nice healthy thread, where I can talk about it.
Right now I only have Gundam 00, on my watching list, Im looking for 1 maybe 2 animes to round out the week.
Thx for the help :)
And again , big sorry to the mods if this is in the wrong section -.-

No, it's still recommendation.
It's still too early to tell what's really number one for me this season, and I can't say right off that it will break into my top 5, but Myself ; Yourself seems to be one of the most interesting series.
It seems to come off as a utterly generic comedy/romance series, but there's a lot hidden underneath. Hints at various events of the past, motivations, shifts in personality, all left unsaid, but referenced through the animated expressions. Sidelong glances characters give to each other, various expressions, etc. It's coming out a lot deeper than it appears.
Then there's Clannad. Typical Kanon/AIR Kyoto Animation eye candy. So far, a little less down the supernatural path and more humorous violence.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is another good currently airing show. It's got a lot of dark humor and franticness and keeps you laughing while it pokes fun at different stereotypes and cultural issues in Japan. A draw back is that it's being subbed rather slowly, possibly due to the amount of random background comments that appear on the walls behind characters frequently.

You didn't give me a lot of examples of what you like to work from. Like good "good" or just shonen "good"? Airing or just finished? I'll just cover all of them since I'll be at work before you answer.
shonen series "good":
- Gundam 00 (airing), Sky Girls (airing), Idolmaster Xenoglossia (just ended), all mecha series.
- Claymore (just ended), Heroic Age (just ended),
- Nagasarate Airantou (just ended) light, slice of life inane comedy series.
It's actually been a bad two seasons, and now just starting, for shonen series, only a few really standout series.
good "good":
- School Days (just ended, first episodes are boring as hell, but necessary)
- Gurren Lagann (just ended), supreme badass mecha.
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai (first a few seasons ago, second still airing) excellent story and excessive violence.
- Lucky Star (just ended), Minami-ke (airing) both slice of life comedy series.
Shows promise of being good "good":
- CLANNAD (airing), Myself ; Yourself (airing), both romance/comedies, but deeper than they seem.

Hmm, probably Shakugan no Shana Second, but you need to watch the first season. Other than that, this season is pretty bad. You can give Dragonaut, Gundam 00, Clannad, Bamboo Blade, Blue Drop, Rental Magica, and see if anything seems interesting among those.
The ones I'm waiting for are Juushin Enbu, Ghost Hound, and Shion no Ou, but they haven't started or have been released yet.
You're better off looking for a series from past seasons.

Did you not see Ryllharu's post... several of the series he mentioned are shaping up to be pretty good, though there haven't been any amazing mind-blowing first episodes yet this season. Among all the shows listed by both Bud and Ryl you will probably find at least one that interests you enough to keep watching.
I suspect Juushin Enbu would be the one you'd like if you're into action/fantasy , it's only got one episode out but it wasn't bad and shows some promise.

Hey is Hunter X Hunter another unfinished anime?
Dark Dragon
Fri, 10-19-2007, 03:15 PM
Well Hunter X Hunter can be classified as both "finished" and "unfinished". If you've never read the HXH manga before the anime could be considered finished since there is no plan for any new anime content yet. The mangaka of HXH fell ill or something and went into hiatus for almost 2 years so the manga is not very far ahead of the anime despite it ending a long time ago.

Try watching Koi Koi 7 i find it funny. Its plot is a bit old though but its worth the watch. Now, regarding the Gundam OO, i think its too early to judge but in my personal advocacy, that anime is a rip-off of Gundam Wing when it comes to characters i mean the pilots. Why? Because there are four gundam pilots and same as Gundam Wing one of them is a bit wussy looking. Heck I even mistook that pilot for a girl since he looked kinda pretty but when he spoke i was like Oh my ****ing God!

I think what oyabin was saying is that all the pilots look like guys, and that you are the odd one for thinking that one of them looks like a girl.
While it is true that oyabin mistook the character you were referring to as setsuna, this stupid argument is partly your fault for nitpicking at a show that has only 4 episodes released. Please let this be the last post on this matter. It is extremely off topic.

This is one of my "hidden in the back corner when it shouldn't be" anime series that I have recently watched and enjoyed.
Hitohira (lit. Petal)
Plot summary (taken from ANN):
Asai Mugi, a new student at Kumataka arts academy, has trouble speaking when she is confronted with her extreme stage fright. Forced to join the schools Drama Research Society by upperclassmen, she gradually changes due to the influence of drama.
At first, I thought this was gonna be kinda lame, but I gave it a shot out of boredom. The series is actually not that bad. At 12 episodes, this is a short and sweet series for those who are not expecting much, but at the same time, won't be disappointed.
Plus, it has two of our favorite voice actresses: Ayako Kawasumi (Saber in Fate/stay Night, Ohno in Genshiken, Nodame in Nodame Cantabile, etc.) and Satsuki Yukino (Yoruichi in Bleach, Chidori in Full Metal Panic, Milly in Trigun, etc.)..... okay, Satsuki Yukino is one of MY favorite voice actresses, haha, I don't know about anyone else.

Damn... Now that you proceeded to mention Ayako Kawasumi is in the cast, I've no choice but to check this series out. I mean, I even watched Polyphonica just because she was voice acting a minor character, and that series is bad enough to lower your IQ by 20% for six hours per episode.

About voice actors...Louise in 'Zero no Tsukaima', Shana in 'Shakugan no Shana' and Nagi in 'Hayate no Gotoku!' all have the same VA. And I love all three shows^^, recommended warmly...(though second season of ZnT was sort-of a dissappointment...plot?)
Speaking of 'Hayate no Gotoku!'...The VA of the narrator is the same as that of the Gargoyle in 'Gargoyle of the Yoshinagas'[Doremi]...and that's one of the best anime comedies I've seen^^(well, at least I liked it a lot...) so check it out.

Hoi,
to make it short, i´d like to watch some anime with focus on male main characters. Im not saying that those animes im currently watching are bad, but im kinda getting sick of all the girl-focused stories...emancipation is all nice, but there are too many shows with strong female characters at the moment.
Any recommendation?

Planetez: Though the series begins with a focus on Ai, all the character development is really on Hachimaki. It's divided fairly evenly between the two of them, but she's not someone I would call a "strong female lead."
Scyred: Not a glowing example of anime, but it is standard shonen fare. Two male leads and a smattering of largely worthless female characters.
Peacemaker Kurogane: Mid 19th century samurai action/comedy. More comedy than action, but still an enjoyable series.
Busou Renkin: Does have a strong female lead, but the male lead overshadows her in the later half of the series. A very enjoyable shonen series that rarely ever takes itself seriously.
Okusama wa Mahou Shoujo: Romance-comedy series parodying the magical girl genre. Weak female leads, moderate male lead, but pretty funny. Can't go wrong with Inoue Kikuko.
Gankutsuou: Highly stylized retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo.
Vandread: Harem/mecha/comedy. Incredible stubborn male lead.
Air Gear: Same as Vandred, but substitute extreme sports for mecha, and reduce the harem to two (in the anime).
Great Teacher Onizuka: The unequaled classic. The manga is by far better, but the anime is extremely popular, has a great cast, and is very well done.
Aishiteru ze Baby: It's a drama, but there's lots of good character development all around, and a strong male lead with a good sense of responsibility.
Before Munsu gets it in:
Hunter x Hunter: Obligatory.
It's kind of slim pickings for this one. With such a vague concept, I'm a bit surprised I found so few. The "strong female lead wishy-washy male lead" has been dominating anime and manga for a very long time.
It could just be the stuff I watch.
EDIT: I'm adding a few things as I remember them.
EDIT 2: I think that'll do it.

Last Exile was the most enjoyable 'piloting' anime I've ever watched. At 26 episodes, it's more of an investment than a movie, but the plot, characters, and animation are top-notch. It's got an excellent blend of sci-fi and magical elements that go well with the story. I recommend it to anyone, but if you have a thing for planes (old planes especially), it's especially relevant.

well this question could sound a bit stupid because i could just download a few episodes but since there are alrdy 3 seasons out and a 4th comming this year i wonder:
Is major a good sports anime? (ok, 4 seasons talk for themselves however...naruto does also have so many episodes but its not really "that" good)
i like ookiku furikabutte very much but i heard major is a bit unrealistic and someone told me it has a big time-jump in it...
how's the animation? can it keep up with ookiku furikabutte? or will i be dissapointed because i watched OF first.

I just joined, been looking at this thread for awhile now, anyway I've been watching Major and I'm almost done with the 3rd season. This and Overdrive are the only sports anime I have ever liked.
To answer your first question, it IS good, and I can see what some people may think, "oh god, 100+ episodes for this anime" but for Major you really, or at least I, want to see them reach the top. The only thing I don't like about it is that whenever the team is in a pinch during a game, it's always the same old "do your best!" but I just love seeing those wind-breaking pitches.
As for ookiku furikabutte, I probably wont watch it because I think 1 or 2 sports anime is enough for me. As for the time jump, it's not that huge, it's only like a 3 year jump. As for unrealistic, eh, of course it would be.
I think the animatopm is pretty good(I think all animation is good, I don't care too much about animation though, I'm more for the plot) especially when it comes to the pitches.
*I talk a lot about the pitches but they're are just so cool!!!!*
I'm searching for anime under these genres: school-life/romance/drama/harem
Nothing too old (like before 2000), I did say I didn't care too much about the animation, but if I had to say, I really don't like old anime ><.
If the recommendation is a bit broad here are some that I like:
Suzuka
Ichigo 100%
Gift
Final Approach
Mahoraba
Da Capo
As for my recommendation, my friend calls it "tear jerkers"(makes you want to cry)
Elfen Lied
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
Major-The first season only. Out of all the tear jerkers I've seen, this is the one where any sound like a snap would make me burst into tears.

Shuffle! - Not the second season (Memories), but the first. Most well executed harem series in a long time. Good amount of drama in that too, particularly the last three arcs. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2844)
Maburaho - not my favorite series, but it's a very light series that doesn't require too much thought. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=1057)
Vandread - Aired in 2000, but has very good animation compared to several series that aired after it did. Space mecha harem. Not the "school-life" you were after, but any harem fan who has no issues with mecha should definitely see it. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=177)
School Rumble - Not that much of a harem, but certainly worth the watch if you are into school life drama/comedies. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2165)
School Days - Not for the faint of heart. A school-life harem for sure...but this series has earned its dark reputation several times over. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=5117)
Seto no Hanayome - Harem (pretty much), comedy (definitely), drama (sometimes). Boy meets girl, girl is mermaid, boy is engaged to mermaid. Hilarity ensues. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4821)
Sumomomo Momomo - Harem-comedy, school life, and plenty of martial arts. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4528)
Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru - Harem school-life series that tries to disguise itself as yuri. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4003)
Since I put that down:
Strawberry Panic - Actual yuri harem school-life series. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4223)
For the ladies:
Ouran High School Host Club - Reverse-harem school-life comedy. Definitely worth the watch for all, but few series bring out the "glomping" fangirls as quickly. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4148)
-----------
Now as for "tear-jerkers," you are missing several of that list. Maybe you can check them out as well.
Saikano AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=113)
Bokura Ga Ita AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4441)
The KEY series:
CLANNAD
AIR
Kanon (2006),
and
Chrno Crusade AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=1052) (trust me on this last one)
One final recommendation because it is both a school-life drama series and a tear-jerker to some, but is a must see for any and all:
Aishiteru ze Baby - AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=1648)
I believe my work here is done.

Ah I guess I should have listed all of the ones I have watched instead of partial. All those that you listed for the tear jerkers are good ones too, though it has been awhile since I have seen them, maybe I'll rewatch them sometime. I have watched most of those tear jerkers and Harem anime, but I will take a look Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru and Chrno Crusade.
I have tried to download Chrno Crusade before but I couldn't find it, any ideas where?
As for Kanon, I saw the 2002 version, is the 2006 version any different? or just simply undated visuals and such?

The 2006 version of Kanon is overwhelmingly better. Not just in terms of visuals, but in storytelling as well. It is 10 episodes longer than the previous version, so the arcs of everyone have been expanded accordingly. The only arc I found to be better in the original was Shiori's, but not by a great deal either. All the other girls had a great deal of depth added to their arcs.
As for where to download, I can only forward you to the Downloads Section (http://forums.gotwoot.net/forumdisplay.php?f=11) of the forums. You can also check the AniDB links to see which subbers completed it, and possibly use irc to download if the episodes are still available.

The 2 seasons are completely different from each other. The one named Da Capo Second Season starts 2 years later after Nemu had left for a university. Now, as for Da Capo 2, according to anime news network is set 53 years after the original Da Capo characters; meaning that the characters in this one are the grand children of those from the first Da Capo.
And yes, it's a definite must-watch. Completely different stories from each other, however it's pretty cool how the grand kids are similar to their grand parents

As for ookiku furikabutte, I probably wont watch it because I think 1 or 2 sports anime is enough for me. As for the time jump, it's not that huge, it's only like a 3 year jump. As for unrealistic, eh, of course it would be.
/B]
hmmm why do you say "of course"?
i don't know for sure because i don't watch baseball very often but i think ookikku furikabutte is one of the most realistic sports-anime i've seen... well lets even say most realistic anime.. since it's not fantasy or sci-fi
there arn't any "super" batter/pitcher whatever...
the main character has a very good control, but no speed and is very insecure
his teammates arn't total jerks... they are all pretty good
for example their cleanup batter does have very good eyes and seems superior to the others, but he is small and can't score homeruns because of thet.. however hes really fast which makes him a good runner and he has a problem that he thinks of himself too high
so every character in the team has a good story, strengths and weaknesses .. and there arn't any pitches like "super tiger-fast-sliding ball" *woaaahhhhh* or batters with a "devil-highway-bat* *weeee*, which is why i like this series.. so i thought when people talk about major being unrealistic, it is because they win everygame even though the opponent is obviously superior or because of very unrealistic pitches and so on.
the best thing about this series is that it is not "one sided"... they show the thoughts and talks of both teams, so you are able to identify yourself with both...and not only with the main team.
ah and for tear-jerkers:
fate/stay night
i don't know... but the ending was sad... never excepted it to end this way and to be honest i even hate type-moon for doing it that way :P
it has some good harem-comedy in it too...
its nearly the same with Elfen Lied but i think Fate was even better
edit:
btw are there any animes with music/dance? the only one i've watched so far which had at least a little music/dance in it was "the melancholy of suzu..zu..hariaaaa Haruhi"
i tried to search a bit on youtube but didn't find any..only fan made .gifs n stuff..
i wonder why... it's not really difficult to create an interesting story which has to do with music n stuff..
a band which tries to get famous... would be enough to get me interested.. many obstacles like love/feelings/failures n stuff..
well back to the question: are there any animes which have to do with music or dancing?? ^^
the only thing i found is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icmeUtfi63s but it has nothing to do with an anime am i righ xD?
edit: oh man, i just watched a few major amv + scenes... and compared to ookikku furikabutte, major is simply shit :/

Now that I really think about it, Major isn't unrealistic in anyway. The pitches DO look like it's impossible to do/hit but I think they are regular baseball pitches. I'm not a baseball fan or know anything about it but I think the only part that MIGHT seem unrealistic in major would be the pitching. Probably the animation of it makes it look unrealistic. I just calculated and the opposing teams always seem to be like "OMG! how can you hit/throw a fast ball like that!" and the speed on average for the main character is 150 km/h. I found out that's only 93mph which is regular speed for pro baseball but is considered fast for high school baseball.
Maybe the unrealistic of it is that the main character can a 93mph ball while only in high school, so I take back what I said about it be unrealistic of course.
I wont say okikku furikabutte is bad in any way because I haven't watched it, only read descriptions, but I think Major is great and I probably wont like okikku furikabutte because it might have the same type of drama around the team players or like you said every character has their own strength and weaknesses
KrayZ33, if you're looking for another sports anime and it seems like you wont watch Major anymore, I suggest watching Overdrive. Theres going to be a definite 2nd seaon but if your into the type of don't give up and I must get stronger, faster, better, you like this bicycle anime.
I just watched half of Aishiteruze Baby and I just got addicted to it right there, the child is just way too cute to not watch it.

i have to admit that i dont know which season this is but...

the baseball-bat broke wtf and... "FOUL! FOUL! FOUL! FOUL! FOUL! FOUL!" "oh hes excepting the fastballs"... come on is this "the superkickers"? thats not realistic at all :(
in comparison to OF:http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=X-x10KpASyA
major seems pretty weak...even though its an opening i posted (better animation n stuff)
however thanks for your fast answer, even though i think you are very wrong there with major beeing good.
to overdrive
well actually it looks somehow boring.. i think a "race" anime should have very good graphics and much more speed to be interessting... like: http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=hwAcb04BXbE
i know this is need for speed but well.. a race without speed and good looks is just boring in my opinion.. lovestory/dramas etc. can't help then because there are better animes out there which focus on the drama and not on sports

=/, I guess your right about Major. I guess the reason why I like it because of the drama/determination as well as the fast pitches xD, but it is the only baseball anime I've seen.
If I remember correctly, the bat breaking is only on that season, and the first season is pretty old. I believe the 2nd season, so far, is the best out of the 3 that are out now and the animation does get somewhat better. Maybe I should say it isn't as unrealistic as the first season? I don't really know ><, I keep shifting ideas now on realistic stuff, but the fact remains that Major does have unrealistic measures to it.
Now I think I'll definitely give okikku furikabutte a try for a better opinion.
As for that need for speed video, that would definitely be so cool if an anime was as nearly as good as that intro xD. What you said about animes going for drama is so true. Overdrive is just like that, coming for a typical loser/loner to an all-star, in a way I mean but I think that applies to other sports anime as well (except for Major).
Kraco, I see what you mean about it. I'm also surprised they put in "playing with girls" part into it, I expected just kissing and no showing of hands touching, I'm kind of disappointed in that because for a very cute anime like that, they should have stayed away from the touching in my opinion. I don't think it goes well with having an innocent child that is "pitiful".

There's actually a perfectly valid reason for it: It's a shoujo anime. Interestingly enough shoujo stuff can go a bit further than shounen stuff and oft will (though shounen often shows very copious amounts of ecchi imagery as opposed to shoujo). Why? Who knows. Maybe the girl audience is more mature than the boy audience and their concept of a working relationship isn't that a boy regularly saves a girl from a slavering monster...
Ryllharu
Thu, 01-03-2008, 08:28 PM
I've noticed that seinen "ecchi" series tend to have more of the accidental touching (breasts to the face, etc) and panty shots. The relationships tend to culminate with a kiss, and rarely, intercourse.
Shoujo series start out with kissing and move up from there. They are typically devoid of fanservice (unless you count the bishounen coming out of, say a shower. There's fanservice for the fairer sex.). So there's really nowhere to go but up. Nearly all the manga I've read and any of the series that let it go through culminate relationships with intercourse. Granted, much of it is the "just the right time, just the right moment" sort of thing done in a panel or three, a couple seconds of animation. If you take a look around, some of the more popular series that lack a...tasteful presentation are outright smut.
Nothing wrong with that mind you, and there are exceptions to these generalizations.
I suppose it comes more from the audience they are after. They know the boys who are reading shonen series enjoy the "irredeemable loser enjoys impossibly occurring harem" because otherwise they wouldn't keep publishing so many. In seinen, the focus is usually on more blood and gore, some psychological aspects, and physical relationships (all found in series like GantZ and Berserk). Shoujo series, and moreso in the more mature josei genre, the audience is after juicy relationships, or cute ones, that go through a great deal of drama and end happily.
It's all entertainment after all. Sell to your audience.

There are a lot more manga of the Gender Bender genre than there are animated series. They tend not to be overly popular. Only three come to mind.
Kashimasi ~girl meets girl~ - Wherein Hazumu, a rather effeminate boy in the first place, gets struck by an alien spacecraft and unfortunately (fortunately for the audience), is only able to be brought back to life as a cute girl. (Alternate title: Kasimasi) AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2843)
An older series and probably quite difficult to find now:
Tenshi na Konamaiki: Where Megumi was changed into the "perfect girl" by a demon in a book when he was young, after wishing he would grow up into the "manliest of men." AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=75)
And of course, the ubiquitous Ranma 1/2. AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=193)
Of course, if you want a wider selection, you can always read manga. There are plenty of series with that sort of thing. List of "Gender Bender" related manga titles (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?page=1&genre=Gender%20Bender)

It sidetracked really badly around the middle of the series, creating mostly anime original content. The series ended with episode 143: [Boy Meets Mom pt 2] and some of the specials have that particular character featured. The movies of course, have nothing to do with the manga at all, but are amusing nonetheless.
The manga obviously continued on for many volumes after.

the only thing which is similiar to gundam is that there is a pilot who simply overpowers the no-name pilots...(but everyone hates him who is watching the series :P)
the story however is soooooo much better... and the main character is a real badass (in my opinion)
the only gundam worth watching is gundam 00.. i love mecha from the bottom of my heart but the only cool thing in the gundam-seed series is the.. uhm what is it called... "zaku" mech..
i dont know if you know the "worms 2 intro" but the anime is in my eyes exactly the same
(in worms 2 the first guy pulls out a pistole, the second one a machine gun, the first a grenade, the second a rocketlauncher and so on and so on)
in gundam seed it feels like they are saying
"haha look here my Gundam-xx-freedom" "ha hes worth shit look here my Gundam-xy-destiny! " "damn! hes so much better, i guess i have to pull out my gundam-xx-Fate!" bla.. bla... bla... i won't stop you from watching, but i wouldn recommend it ,well you allrdy watched and liked it but there are so many series which are btter in my opinion
good mecha series are Macross Frontier / Macross Zero (its not really mecha but something between aircraft+mecha) , maybe Burstangel, Full Metal Panic! (damn, this one is so good), NGE, and yes Code Geass (even though the first episodes were better than the later ones in my opinion)

That aside. There will never be a second season of Ai Baby. However...there considerable more in the manga to read. If you want the end of the story, that's the only place you are ever going to get it. The anime is also very accurate to the manga, with the exception of one thing about his older sister that was left out.
EDIT: I need to review the manga before I can tell you. It's much further than I thought.
EDIT 2: If you want the rest of the story, you will have to start at volume 4 of 7 and work your way up. The anime jumped over a rather large portion of the story, and still cut short.

Death Note...it's a question of how good the adaptation is.
Death Note is a series that has a lot of potential, a great reputation, really excellent writing...but didn't know when to end.
I can say with absolute certainty that the first three or four large arcs (depending on how you want to break up the series) are some of the most well written and intelligent parts of anime I've seen. Unfortunately, the series peaks relatively early, almost immediately after these arcs, and begins to lose focus. I'm intentionally being vague so you can enjoy it. The ending receives a lot of mixed reactions from viewers/readers.
I highly recommend watching (or even reading) the series up through those parts. It's right up to the end of episode 25. After that...the series fell flat for me.

they should have stopped after that... it was just perfect one of the best storys i've ever heard of and it feels like watching a movie or OVA when it comes to animation... probably the best anime ever made up to that point..
well but even after that it is still worth watching... i actually liked how the anime ended, in contrast to most people opinion, i think the ending was fitting.

Regarding Death Note, with enough time for thinking since its end, in a way the less interresting 12 eps are fine.
Why?
Because they allow for the badguy to be less attractive.
They allow for us to see how he declines and become less and less smart, becomes more and more crazy.
In a way, in the 25 first ep, we get to believe (story wise) Kira/Light is becoming a God, everything folds nicely up to that point.
The latter eps are here to remind us no man can become a God (they say there is an execption born something like 2 thousand years ago...)
Anyway, I'm going to watch the director's cut ep. It seems the end is different.

It's very good. It didn't gather such a hype and cult following for nothing.
What comes to it's plot, it's a bit peculiar mainly due to the structure of the series. But I still suggest you watch it in the order it was aired (following the episode numbering) and don't follow any "guides" for the first time through.
Edit: The very first episode doesn't really represent the series itself, yet will be perfectly explained later. So, don't be fooled by it.

hmmm i would suggest watching it in the "right" order (chronologically) because it's kinda weird to watch it in the nonlinear order... (see first episode :P the only reason i kept watching was the bunny-girl-with-ak47 part xD)
i've watched it twice (first time = nonlinear and second time = chronologically) and the second time was much more fun to watch..
btw, its even worth to read the light novels.... they are funny even though i just read to a few chapters... but since it is written in kyon's view, there is a lot of sarcasm (well its in the anime too but even more in the novel) and its really good ^^.
i think this series is really good because you can identify yourself with kyon... he's really someone like you or me trapped in a world full of strange and chaotic beeings.. he simply reacts the way you would do yourself... at least thats what i think.
too bad that it ended so quickly (the last episodes were AWESOME! with the band and stuff !.i won't tell to much, even though i won't spoil even if i do...)... however i've heard some rumors about a second season... or was it a new manga? something called "the *blabla* of Haruhi" NO SPOILERS

That's strange, because as the American released dvds were ending their release, there were increasing reports that "chronological" rather than "airing" order tarnished the series quite a bit. The dvds, unless you bought the special editions, were released in the "chronological" order.
Yes, there is added confusion as to exactly what is going on, and why things jump around so much, but it was meant to be there. The series is told from a single person's viewpoint, and one could argue that it is very much a Modernist series. All of the narrator's "knowns" become false.
But beside the artistic side of the presentation, there's also the practical. The series in "airing" order ends on a climax, the end of the first novel. However, "chronologically," it ends in filler, filled with references, some obscure to even the most hardcore otaku (well, it's not Hayate bad, but it's not the easiest).

you got a point there with the ending... but i really had to watch it twice to understand everything.. and i think it took a lot of "fun" away because storys got split up so much... for example one episode ended with a conversation between 2 persons (let it be episode 2 for example) but this conversation was finished later (let it be episode 8...) i already forgot everything they were talking about and that conversation was actually simply pointless then. because i couldn't understand a thing anymore..
well but the funny thing is/was that even though i watched it twice ( 2-3 days pause between) it wasn't boring...
it was like playing a game where you can choose between 2 path..right or left... if you go right, then you cant go left.. but since you don't want to miss out that part will play it again once you finished it and choose the other path then ^^..
btw a good thing about the nonlinear order is that it remindet me of "Kill Bill" ^^

Fri, 01-18-2008, 12:26 AM
The non-linear order also emphasized the gradual exposition of characters rather than plot. It only makes sense since even if the characters know each other better as the series moves on, it doesnt necessarily show with every episode. Watching it in the airing order gives a better flow of character development.
The arrangement of episodes was pure genius IMO.

Bleach has apparently gone back to the manga for quite a while.
There was one anime original episode (I hesitate to call it filler due to the negative tone "filler" implies) inserted somewhere, but it was considered to be quite good. I can't give you a definite number since I don't watch it, but well over the past ten episodes have been right from the manga.

I'm looking for an anime that I don't know the name of... Don't know if I've come to the right place..
The anime is about a corporation taking care of (using) people (mainly kids I think) with phsycic abilities. I think it's more specifically about a brother and his sister who is ill. He leaves the place (don't remember how it happens)....
If anyone knows which anime I'm talking about it would be a great help. Thanks

Well, it most sounds like the Korean manwha Zero (Mangaupdates (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=318))
I have not seen it, so I can't say for sure, but Kurau Phantom Memory (AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=1810)) sounds like it might fit as well, but it is not about a brother and sister.
It doesn't sound like anything I've seen, but Munsu always watches those kind of series (Kurau is one of his favorite series) so he'd know a lot better than I would.
EDIT: I'm going to continue looking for better matches.

are there more animes like BECK?
i havn't watched the whole series but after seeing DyBre on stage @ episode 12 i was like "WHAT THE HELL!? give me more!" (http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6iKsf6hc-c)
actually i was looking for a good music-anime the whole time but never heard of it before until yesterday when i looked through anime6.
is there more like this? and could it be that BECK is kinda infamous, i havn't watched such a good animation in a long time (even though the faces are a bit weird) and the sound is really great, but never heard anything about it nor did i read about this stuff .. it somehow deserves more publicity if you ask me... ah and a side-question... is The dying breed actually a real band? it song seemed kinda too professionel for an anime, it remindet me of ASH or even Linkin Park somehow, dunno why.

Well, there are plenty of musical anime series out there, but I'm sure they are not quite what you are looking for. They tend to be series deeply geared towards female audiences. Beck is the exception, not the rule.
But here are some anyway:
Probably your best bet would actually be NANA (AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4143)). It is a mature drama (falls under the Josei genre rather than Shoujo). One of the Nana's is the lead singer of a punk band, so it's close to Beck, just female oriented. Less Music Industry, more relationships. Pretty much the amount of relationships in Beck, is the amount of Music Industry in NANA, and vice versa. I highly recommend trying this one.
There's also Gravitation (AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=94)). I have not scene this one, can't say anything about it. My few female friends who are into anime tend to have enjoyed this one, and just as many haven't. It's Shonen Ai, so keep that in mind.
After that, it's lower quality idol group series like Lovedoll and Lemon Angel Project (which showed promise, but got dropped by the subbers way back).
There is also Full Moon wo Sagashite (AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=21)), again, Shoujo. Unfortunately, this series was dragged out a bit too far in comparison of the source manga, and dumbed down considerably for the younger audience they were trying to attract. If you are at least interested in a supernaturally sponsored Idol, check out the manga, which has a much darker overall tone.

ah, im not looking for a new anime, just for the name of an anime i watched, not long ago.
Was about a world, where people are normal, but sometimes there are people with psychic abilities. The main character has blond hair and his foster parents (all kids are raised by such) live a happy life. Then, he finds out that he has certain abilities and the head guy of these Mu people approches him, called "Blue". Later the main character becomes Blue´s successor.
Whats the name of this series , argh ><

Terra e... (Towards the Terra) (AniDB (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=5039)) sounds like what you are looking for.
The only other thing with "Mu" of any kind that I can remember is RahXephon, and it's certainly not that.

If you're looking for music animes, Nana and Nodame Cantabile come to mind, but the former is a bit more dramatic and the latter almost the opposite.

well simply everything...
the sound of the guitars/drumms/bass... the bass was really great and there was this awesome songs ( for example in episode 8 after he saw izumi again even though it was only for like 10 seconds ) he plays on the guitar..
well the story was very great too and so were the lives (Dying Breed for example, see signature), so it was probably the ne plus ultra when it comes to anime...it seemed perfect in every case..
Nana looks a bit strange.. the characters look awkward Oo Nodame Cantabile however seems to be nice, thx.
btw another question:
Animes with really Badass protagonists like in Kaze no Stigma? (i m not talking about standard crap like naruto or something like that... i m talking about real epic "badassness" ^^... kazuma is really epic in my eyes)
so more something in the direction of Devil May Cry or maybe even Black Blood Brothers (however this is not really the stuff i like i don't know why but i dropped Devil May Cry it became boring even though i liked it at first.)

(I defend that Nana is far more like Beck than Nodame is...but it's your choice)
First off, Berserk. Look no further than Guts.
Basalisk is not a bad choice either. Ninjas with lots of powers, and it's all one big Team Deathmatch. As gory as Berserk, but with better animation to back it up. Some scenes are not for the weak-stomached.
Elfen Lied. Your female uber-badass heroine in the demonic Lucy. Further improved by the comparison to her alter ego.
Gurren Lagann Couldn't leave this one out. Not only do you get one badass, you get another after a timejump.
Scryed. This serves as the generic badasses with super powers fight to the death anime of yesteryear.
Black Lagoon. If you want to dip a little bit into the more realistic side, you've got Revy, Dutch, and Balalaika, and a few assassins here and there.
If Munsu shows up, he can give you a few more.

ok since all my animes i currently watch come to an end here is another question:
Fate/stay Night was a great anime, but when i saw Saber in her armor i always wondered if there are any animes which really involve knights in full(!)-armor.. i m not talking about something like Claymore.. i m a real fan of knights fighting with their swords wearing lots of heavy metal and a helmet and stuff... you know the movie "a knights tale" probably? ^^
i think its a waste that they the always show the characters without a helmet or mask since this is most fearsome part of the armor or suit when he actually stands before you in person.
something like this

Hey me too man! I always wanted to see an anime where it revolves around medieval times... The whole castle battles with knights, magic, and all that neat stuff. I think Record of Lodoss War was kind of like that, but that's really old. I've seen a few episodes here and there way back when I was small, but never really took the time to watch it all since it's so outdated.
Of course, it has to be good too. :p
I think Shining Tears was kind of going that direction, but when you want a serious anime, it doesn't help that the art is designed by a hentai artist... Because those scenes take away the serious feeling... And then when the show also has like birdmen and all those fantasy creatures, mixed with a hentai artist, you begin having thoughts about things you don't ever want to see..

Shonen series are good for newbies. These include Naruto, Bleach and One Piece. They help you get accustomed to the common stuff that happen and the common things people say in anime.
I suggest you avoid comedy series for the time being. A lot of them use jokes that you can only understand after watching and understanding a lot of anime. In other words... otaku jokes.
What kind of series are you looking for? Any theme in mind? Genre?

Afro Samurai is a decent ninja action series. It's in English voiced by Samuel L Jackson.
Basilisk was another popular ninja series, although the term "ninja" probably isn't very fitting for that series. It's more like mutants and superpowers.
Shonen is generally action series targeted at children and young teenagers, especially boys. A lot of older people also watch them though (One Piece is a good example).
Shoujo is like shonen, but targeted at girls. They're generally not action series.
Seinen is targeted at older audiences. They generally deal with complicated themes aimed at a mature audience. Honey and Clover is a seinen series.

Longer than 26 episode "dark" series are very few and far between. Most run the 26 episodes, give or take.
ERGO PROXY - I never got particularly far into it, but it is one of the dystopian, post-apocalyptic series that you are looking for. Runs 23 episodes.
Gungrave - Story begins as a monster story, flashes back to a mobster story, and then returns to its dark roots as a monster story. Good action, the flashback has an excellent plot, and it runs 26 episodes.
Berserk - Again, monster story, medieval flashback this time, return to monster story. A true classic, excellent dub if you don't mind them, and all the darkness you can handle in a plotline. I believe you are familiar with this title, but it runs 25 episodes.
Chevalier D'Eon - French period mystery at its finest. Not to my particular tastes (delays in subbing combined with the slow plotline at the time forced me to drop the series). However, the series has fantastic music, excellent animation if you grab the HD subs, and a dark, vaguely satanist plotline. Zombies, possessions, and plenty of that fun stuff. Runs 24 episodes.
Gantz is up the alley you're looking for, but make absolutely sure you get DVD rips for the first half of the series, that part was censored on television. If you like it enough, but aren't so sure about the ending, read the manga instead up to the "Second Phase."
Noein - Don't be thrown off by the simple art. This series is a lot more deep than it appears. Sci-fi, dimensional travel, and darker undertones. Runs 24 episodes.
RahXephon - Towards the darker side of mecha without going emo (Evangelion), you will find RahXephon. Post apocalyptic, violent deaths, last hope of humanity. Look no farther. Runs 26 episodes, accompanied by an excellent musical score.
SaiKano - Alright, this series is only 13 episodes. You want dark, depressing, tragedy? This here would be the pinnacle. The be all, end all, lord on high of dark anime.
Bokurano - Can't say I've seen it, but this would be another darker series. Children in mecha, add in a bit of despair, and a high price for victory. Runs 24 episodes. I've heard the manga is even darker, and edits were made to the story.
Mahoromatic (seasons 1 and 2) - Billed as a comedy. Why is this a "dark" series? Could be due to the fact that every single episode ends with the exact number of days the lovely automatic maiden has left to run before she dies. Don't let the humor deceive you. 26 episodes total.
Basalisk - Ninjas, blood, gore, tragedy. In a fight to the death between families, there are no winners. 24 episodes total.
Witch Hunter Robin - Dark visuals, dark concept, another dark anime for this list. The title is fairly self explanatory, and the visuals are nice. I loved the OP/ED, and the music was also good. Runs 26 episodes.
Lastly, there is Monster. The only series in my suggestions that matches your criteria. 74 episodes total. Murderers. I don't know much else, but this series is loved by many who have seen it.
Now, if you want manga, I can provide that as well, there are plenty of those.
