why wouldn't he just make a gnarly bone outside of his arm, and use that, instead of ripping it out of his body? In any case, it's not something I particularly care about.

What is cool is that if he can manipulate bones that are harder than steel, then he can make some pretty nifty armor, or at least protect every major organ in his body.
