Gaara didn't defeat him. Kimimaro survived through even that, disease killed him. If he didn't magically turn into stone when he popped out again, he'd kill both Gaara and Rock Lee in the surprise attack he had coming (when he screamed YOU KNOW NOTHING, SONSOFBITCHES!!111)
gaara admitted he and lee would've gotten their asses kicked if it weren't for kimimaro's sickness. one of the reasons why kimimaro died FROM the illness and not by an actual opponent was to show that no one that was there could've taken on kimimaro.

what are they gonna do when lee is meant to fight kimi, cos didnt he take the sake instead in the manga, but in the anime tsu gave him the medicine, also last time we say him in the anime he couldnt walk up those steps, but now in the same day hes meant to be able to fight the most awesomest character in the series?
1) Tsunade's healing methods are that awesome.
2) Lee's determination makes him heal faster.
3) A little sake always does a body good.
Take your pick, all are valid reasons in the nonsense world of Naruto, where nothing ever really has to make sense, especially when comparing events in the manga and anime. Though if I really had to pick one, I'd go with number 2.
EDIT: Anyhow, in the manga, Lee took what he thought was medicine (obviously, it was the sake) due to a mixup from Tsunade. (She left her sake there). She may have given him the sake at that point in the anime, or they may be doing something different as to not promote underage drinking.

Kimimaro with level 1 seal was better than drunk lee
Kimimaro with level 2 seal was better than gaara
therefore, gaara obviously stood better against kimimaro than naruto did. Hopefully, you guys wouldve figured it out by now, though, that its almost a paper/rock/scissors between these matches, and just because kimimaro slaughtered naruto, doesnt mean that kimimaro must be better than the new sasuke is, even though naruto stood a better chance against sasuke.
besides, level 2 kyubi naruto could probably kick gaara's ass

The thing about Kimimaro is that he was a _great_ taijutsu fighter. Great, really really good.
And he was paired up to fight with the sloppiest, brainless fighter in the series - Naruto; whose techique consists in making a bunch of clones and rushing to the enemy. Of course Kimimaro kicked his ass.
What could be interesting would be to see a normal fight between Lee and Kimimaro... no Seals, no Sake, just taijutsu and, in Kimi's case, his bloodline limit. I don't think Lee would be at such disadvantage then...
Maybe Kimimaro's weakness would be distance-fighters, but then again he can (eww) fire his fingertips and the spider-man dude that Neji fought was that kind of fighter and yet admited that he got whooped by Kimi.
BTW, full armor Kyubi Naruto vs. Kimi - advantages? No?
naruto's worst matchup is any fast taijutsu user who wastes no time

yep naruto stand no chance against taijutsu fighters his taijutsu is a joke. i hope naruto will be a skilled ninja after the time jump and not just a grown version of the current naruto with brainless tactics and no skills at all.
well he's being trained by Jiraiya, who we've seen fight and it seems like he doesnt waste any time, so yeah hopefully naruto will take on some of jiraiyas fighting characteristics(the good ones)

yea another thing naruto is sure to take after is the pervertness borh jiraiya and kakashi got. naruto is like a closet pervert waiting to get out.
Naruto invented Sexy-no-jutsu, you can hardly say that the pervert inside of him is hiding...
and speaking of taijutsu, Naruto already has the ultimate counter for most taijutsu techniques, he just needs to learn to use it properly.
of coure, i'm talking about the rasengan, for these few reasons.
1. close range: unlike the chidori, that needs a running distance in order to be utilized properly, it's possible to hit the rasengan from a stand still position.
2. Low chackra consumption.
3. It's possible to create the rasengan in both hands.
4. psychological effect: like gentsuzo (the bomber, whatever his name was) in HxH, Naruto could use feints with the rasengan in order to push his opponenets back to his favorite range.
it was already proven that it's possible to use the rasengan in fist fights, as was shown by jiraya blowing up the stone legendary chunin (i think the poor guy was called yami). So far, Naruto has been using it as his 'chidori'- same movement as Sasuke, and thus burdenning on himself all the problems the chidori has, the same problems which require the sharingan to overcome them.
If Kishimoto (after the break) will change the way naruto uses the rasengan, i'll actually stop being hateful and admit he's restored to his former glory.
