Whoever wrote that question is a failure of a human being that has never sawed a board. Even a rusty saw wouldn't take 10 minutes to cut through a single board.

Forgetting that detail, a math teacher correcting incorrectly such a simple question is a funny picture in my judgement.

What if marie was 8 years old and the wood was high quality oak?

    And the saw is tiny...

Am i missing something? it can be both 20 or 15 minutes depending how you cut the board piece right?

    No.

Cutting a piece of board into two pieces takes 1 cut. Cutting the board into three takes 2 cuts. If it takes 10 minutes to perform one cut, then two would take 20 minutes.

The marker is dumb enough to think instead that "cutting something into 2 pieces takes 10 minutes. Therefore, that's 1pc per 5 minutes - and 3 pieces must take 15 minutes.

The marker would be right if the question was about cutting pieces off a block of wood - in which case the bulk block would not count as a piece.

edit: well, actually, I take that back.

Yes, it can be 15 depending on how you cut the wood, but that's stupid, since you don't define the method as the quickest possible one, then you can answer with anything you want and justify it.

A scenario to fit the above example could be: the original block was a square. It takes 5 minutes to cut from one edge to the center, and another 5 minutes to do one from another edge in order to cut out a quadrant. Then you only have to spend 5 minutes cutting out a protruding bit to create another piece..

Take the fictional board and do a vertical cut in the middle, two pieces, 10 minutes, now take either piece and do an horizontal cut, 3 pieces, 15 minutes. I guess that`s how the teacher saw it, which is not necessarily wrong, and before someone comes trolling i never said the 20 minutes answer was wrong.

I edited my post while you were posting I think, but yes.

Your scenario assumes that the board is twice as long as it is wide btw, which isn't stated in the question.

Given the details of the question, I think it's pretty safe to say 20 is the only reasonable answer.

There's a picture with a narrow wooden board and a typical saw right next to the text. If that wasn't relevant to the question and was there only to confuse people, the teacher should be sawed in half, slowly and with no magic tricks.

If there is more than one answer to the question, each of them should be good.
depending on how you visualize it:
    1) cutting the board into 2 exact pieces - 10 minutes, cutting board into 3 exact pieces 20 minutes
    2) cutting two pieces FROM the board - 10 minutes, so 5 minutes for piece
    3) you are cutting the board in half parallel to the longer side - takes 10 minutes, you are calculating the (length cut)/(time), then you cut one of pieces parallel to the shorter side, etc - so it takes less time for each cut, but you lack the dimensions of the board to approach this angle.

anyways about teacher's mistakes.. one math teacher fucked up marking the questions on test(seriously - that test was for 4th grade of elementary school - yet the 50% of questions will only make sense to you when you are 3 years older or so, and some of those were phrased so badly that university students had no idea what they were supposed to mean.) - too bad that one of her pupil's parents was a university math teacher.

    Revision on 1)
It doesn't have to be exact pieces, that's exactly why it would take 20 minutes to cut 3 pieces; even if you cut it in a ratio of 1:3:6 each cut will still take 10 minutes.

This sure turned silly fast...damn you buff >=o.

    Got bored halfway through.

Either I don't like to read or it was boring and rambling.

<@Terra> he told me this, "man actually meeting terra is so fucking big", and he started crying. Then he bought me hot dogs

Being able to read BS doesn't prove anything positive under normal circumstances. Unless you count too much free time positive.

The "tl;dr" provokes you to read further, but I didn't even get that far on my first go.

"THE INTERNET HAS SHORTENED YOUR ATTENTION SPAN" - yep, knew that. move on.

Only Sapphi's "Did I win?" made me revisit that wall of text.

My bad - i just wanted to say that the whole board is cut in X pieces, and doing one cut takes 10 minutes.

It's not a cookie, it's a melon pan. The melon pan outside coating is made of cookie dough though, so it looks like it.

From what I can see (since the text is really small), the text says: "??? melon ??? made to look like an afro, a chocolate cream filled melon pan."
