@Darkshadow: At first glance, I thought your pic was referencing one of the new South Park episodes. I was like "Okay... turd in the punch bowl... but why is there a bird?". Then I scrolled down and saw Falcon Punch. That made me laugh even more, but I couldn't believe I didn't catch that.

Yeah but it none of those game had quite the impact of the original Super Mario. I also think by the time the Snes came out, most people had written off video games as another fad that will die so it's not as widely played.

Also, the NES wasn't really competing with any other major systems when it came out. There was the Sega Master System, but it was kind of obscure. Then the Sega Genesis came out, and was 16-bit, probably a year or two before the SNES.
