I used to think post counts meant absolutely nothing, but it sort of does mean something if everyone posts things that are worthwhile, or at least semi-worthwhile. In a thread in the Naruto forum there was this argument between two mods about something, and one pointed out that some guy had a significant number of posts and was therefore an active member of the community. The user's a worthwhile poster if his posts aren't spam or otherwise irrelevant or dumb as hell. Post counts serve as an indicator of these things if, again, the posts aren't spam or otherwise stupid. That's why post counts count of matter, and that's one more reason why you shouldn't spam or post stupidly.
