Thread: Gan?

    Gan?

This maybe a pointless, stupid thread, but I just wanna know something. here i go!

Sharin-gan, Byuku-gan, Rasen-gan. They all have the word -gan at the end. What does gan mean?
I was thinking that before Rasengan came out, I thought -gan meant 'eye'. But after Rasengan came out, i was thinking that hmm....... maybe -gan means 'ball' (since Rasengan is round like a ball, and eyes are like balls as well).

    RE: Gan?

Gan does mean eyes. Byakugan translates into White Eye(s). Sharingan translates into Copy Wheel Eye(s). Do the math.

As for rasengan, no freakin' idea.

    RE: Gan?

Hmm.. I know "gan" to mean "Gun" and "Cancer" (igan = stomach cancer). I only know "me" for eyes though. "Sharin" means "wheel."
I'm really not getting how "gan" figures in within this context.

    Gan?

Well, the "gan" used in Byakugan and Sharingan is represented by a different kanji than the one in Rasengan. The "gan" used in Byakugan and Sharingan both mean eye, but in reference to Rasengan, it most likely means circle, but, I prefer sphere.

I would post the kanji, but, it seems like this forum doesn't display Japanese correctly.

    Gan?

the "gan" in sharingan and byakugan mean eye.

the "gan" in rasengan mean what raijin said, a sphere or a ball.
    the "ra" means swirl.
the "sen" means the moving in a cicular form.

got the kanji from epi 94.

    I tried my best...

Terracosmo, he bablefish'ed and came to the wrong conclusion.
If this was a sub people would be pointing and laffing.

Now Eurasian, he used his infinate powers of dliberation and came to the correct conclusion without resorting to a translation site. *congratz!*

No no no, you're all crazy. Gan directly translates to "technique which will have cool sound effect when activated and is a sign that someone is about to get pwned"

Actually it was my japanese textbook from college.

And I rather think Kakashi, Sasuke and Itachi having "mirror-wheel cancer" would be an interesting twist on the series. >.<

Guys, listen to Eurasian, It's all about the kanji. There are plenty of words that sound the same, but have diferent kanji.
    kami, kami, kami no ke!!!
(god, paper, hair, or paper, god, hair)
sorry, one of my old first year japanese jokes.

Not unlike "I", "eye" and "aye."

I wasn't able to find "gan" meaning "eye" until I dug up a kanji dictionary. I did note that it means "eyeball." I was surprised to see that there are over 20 kanji for gan though. Unfortunately romanji doesn't allow for clarity as to which one is being used. Context context. It'd be nice if one of the subbers threw the kanji for techniques and stuff into their translation. (though it's entirely possible that they have and I just haven't been paying attention.)
