Wow, thanks abunai and Elessar. Those are some pretty cool lessons. It just shows how deep this series really is, and how so much can be discussed about this series in so many levels. Knowledge is golden, and this series just brings up so much. Thank you for clarifying things.

I just took a trip to Gamefaqs and found out some rather bad news

Anime.Fin dropped subbing Elfen Lied in English.
Their encoder, Mentar, has stated that they will now only translate it with Finnish subtitles - they are Anime.FIN[nish] - afterall.
Anybody know if this is true or not?

Unlike Doji however, Elfen Lied is actually good, its worth the download IMO.
Well... I only watch Naruto (stopped lately what with the Manga becoming a lil to DBZish) and S7 (until licensing), but it'll be interesting.

I doubt it... that's probably BS... i think all of their releases up to this point have been english subtittled.. (maybe there is an exception somewhere)

I recently went onto their irc channel, this is absolutely true (to a point). Elfen Lied has been dropped by anime.fin. The quote was something like "EL dropped. We were betrayed by our encoder, he has been summarily executed."

Check for yourself at #anime.fin@chatsociety.net in irc

That sucks, I'll just have to wait 7-odd months for the ADV version.

Elfen Lied

(lengthy, but factually impeccable exposition by Elessar omitted for brevity)

In fact, it isn't necessary to go to such extremes in explicating the title. Most likely, it was borrowed from the title of the German song Elfenlied by Eduard Moerike (1804-1875).

The song is a little ditty about an elf (i.e. a fairy) peeping on a human wedding. It makes use of a pun of the German word Elf, which can mean both "elf/fairy" and "eleven" - the story takes place at eleven o'clock.

Link to Elfenlied in German and English

Why associate such an innocuous little song with a bloody anime, you ask? Well, I don't think there's any good reason for it, except to be hip.

I'm guessing that, with the current vogue in Japan for all things German, this is merely another version of the same dynamic that produces the sometimes-odd "Engrish" nonsense phrases on everything from bento-boxes to clothes. The medium (= the language) becomes the message (= hipness factor).

"Gerpanese"?

Elfen Lied

actually i was just pointing out that you should not take the title as face value due to the fact that there are so many possible interpretations and the fact that the japanese are sloppy translators (AYBABTU anyone?) in the first place but meh gg on the translation facts .

also on the genetics argument

dudes you realize that the entire human race is related in some way or another?
unrelated ppl have bred and produced down syndrome (and other nastier defects) children. If you know anything at all about genetics , the set number of variables that go into creating an individual (note not humans in general) are actually rather limited. add to that the fact that most genetic defects are carried by the x-chromosome which gives them a very high chance of survival and being passed on to the next generation at some point in time.

the fact of the matter is that until there is such a thing as wide spread genetic screening , you will never actually ever be sure if your offspring is going to inherit some horrible genetic defect either from you or your spouse. Cousins getting together is taboo because its taboo. theres no rhyme , logic or reasoning behind it. Bear in mind that at the time these taboos were formed they did not have any great knowledge of genetics and had to rely on anecdotal evidence at best and at worst they were just talking out of their ass. Even today with scientific methods and greater emphasis on empirical data there is no conclusive evidence that cousins getting together has any greater chance of producing genetically deformed children UNLESS there is a consistent history of genetic deformities in the immediate ancestors (5 generations if i am not mistaken) of either sides of the family bloodlines. in other words ... same shit as if you are marrying into some other bloodline =P

look its like this, we could discuss the scientific and sociological aspects of it till the cows come home but the crux of it is that cousin love is not taboo in alot of cultures and science has shown that unless theres a prevailing history of such nonsense going on theres nothing genetically unsound with it either. its neither exotic nor particularly exciting unless you happen to come from a culture where this is taboo , which i am guessing is about atleast 70% of the ppl on these boards =P

RE: Elfen Lied

it doesnt necessesarily have to be down syndrome... it can be any disease.... close related people tend to have more similar genes than faaaaaaaaaaaar related people.... so that means that the combination that can cause the disease in question has a higher probability of occuring....

RE: Elfen Lied

yenlowang, I am just saying that from what I remember in my biology classes, the closer you are genetically related, the less variance there is in the gene pool, and the higher your chances of defects that could occur.

I remember that if you have a population of less than 10,000 of the same species, there will not be enough genetic diversification, and the population will eventually die out. Please correct my numbers if they are incorrect, since it has been a while since I took Genetics.

As for looking for a history of genetic defects, I don't really know of a case study for the general population, but there has been recorded historty of royal families inter-marrying. The old Royal household, I think the same line as Catherine the Great, had a history of hemophiliac that caused the death of their descendents. If you can look at a lot of the royal families in the past, you could probably have a case study of genetic defects.

Also, I was corrected by my friend the other day. In the US, in 31 states, it is legal to marry your first cousin. It is just not legal in my state. It is also socially unacceptable to marry your relatives from all the cultures that I know of.

Now, I just really need my Elfen Lied. *sigh* *enters withdrawal* I am just happy that some groups are still subbing it. I wonder if Anime-fin could recruit a new encoder and be able to continue?

Elfen Lied

If anime-fin is going to finish this series, that's great, if this is the last one they do, that's okay too. I gave up on getting all worked up over a dropped series. Even if its a really deep series like Elfen Lied.

Edit:

I don't know if anyone thought about this, but the opening gained a lot of signifigance with me today. I read somewhere that the Lily is often interpreted as a flower of death. Since the song has "...Lily of Purity..." in it, I wonder if it isn't something about the purity of death.

Just something to think about.

Elfen Lied

WHAT HAPPEN WHEN I WAS SLEEPING?!?!?!?! i can't believe i wasn't a part of this...

despite the song having a german title, the song is in latin. so even if japan is going through a German-craze (which i don't know...what happen to david beckham?!), the song wasn't used becuz it was "hip." unless the german relation is the title and that was all u meant...<-confused

yahthat unrelated ppl can have children w/ genetic disorders. the number of variables may be limited (i don't know for sure) but constantly mutation occurs in the chromosome. ppl usually don't have the same face, body structure. etc. so even if it was limited, the gene pool is goddamn big. but if u breed w/ ur relative, that gene pool became small. really small cuz it's only ur family's gene pool. it's just the chance for a genetic disorder to occur increases. if they both have a recessive trait for that disorder, then the chances for that trait to show up just went up.

Queen Victoria was the one who had hemophilia. it mostly affected the male descendants.

happiness. now that i know anime-fin didn't drop elfen lied.

EDIT: spoiler 10***************
DraGunZer0, i saw that too...it says a lot of what the cops think nowadays............

i guess this episode was pretty much flashback on how everything started. so that girl was lucy??? getting cannonballs chucked at her. i don't get it when kurama had a revelation to kill the baby. he's like "i get it...oomori...'i have to thank you.'"

numero 35...DAMN!!!!! 26 vectors...DAMN!!!!! she's probably gonna be the "final boss." but how the hell is lucy going to fight someone w/ 26 vectors?!?!?!

CLIFFHANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH WHY!?!?!?!?! especially ending it w/ the intro of #35.

RE: Elfen Lied

Umm.. on ep 10 at 8:25, did the cops really say "Come out with your PANTS down?" I find that kind of odd...

Elfen Lied

DraGunZer0, I think that response from the cops might be a joke by Anime-fin? It sounds like the opposite of "come out with your hands up." I am really glad that Anime-fin continued subbing this series, and this episode did reveal so much.

**Episode 10 Spoilers**

My suspicion was correct. Nana is Kurama's daughter. Still, could someone explain that whole diclonius looking into the mind of Kurama? What did they do to him? And why did he come an agent to stop them because of that? It looks like he can't or they won't kill him.

Eurasian, I don't think that girl was Lucy. They all looked alike, and I think it was mentioned that they all came from the same area at the same time. Lucy is probably the queen, since she is the only one that can actually reproduce. Everyone else is like her drone carrying genetic material to spread around, it seems. I think that the experiments killed a lot of the diclonius. That is why the director ordered to kill new diclonius that are born because there were too many of them.

The canon-balled diclonius died. The one shot in the head died. I think the one where the police was at also died (shot to death). They all look so much alike. I think Lucy has the darkest red color hair, however.

Number 35 is probably a berserk/fighter type drone. Since Lucy is probably the queen, and she has Nana on her side now, they might be able to defeat her combined.

I find the Nana situation strange with Lucy there, but it was mentioned that the diclonius only killed humans. Therefore, I think that Nana and Lucy will probably not kill each other, and probably will get along. Lucy is the queen, afterall. She needs to take care of her drones.

Btw, is Nana a third generation diclonius? It appears that the "good" doctor killed all the third generations were born, but the second generations were the ones killing. Nana didn't want to kill everyone on instinct like the others did.

**End of Spoilers**

Wow, I just realized that packed so much information in this episode. That was an awesome episode, too. I can't wait for the next one.
