Well I just watched the first episode and I must admit it was great. I thought it would have had more blood and gore the way everyone was talking about it but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

^^ Depends on what you've seen before, there is worse out there. If you've seen Urotsukidoji or something as extreme as that (and I only saw the censored English version!) then no you won't be too shocked by much of it, but it is very violent and sometimes quite disturbing. Unlike Doji however, Elfen Lied is actually good, its worth the download IMO.
Yeah there's a lotta gore (never seen Urotsukidoji so can't compare them) but there's a really good story behind the blood and gore. Like Swallow Your Soul said, it's worth downloading.

Yeah, Kouta and his cousin, Yuka, kissed. This was already discussed in this thread around the episode discussion. Just look for **Episode # Spoiler**, and you'll see what was discussed about it. As far as marrying cousins, I have no idea if it is legal in Japan.
In the old days (feudal Asia), marrying your cousin was a common practice amongst the nobles. It makes sure you are marrying into noble blood and has a lot to do with the pre-arranged marriages (which was almost always the case).
In some countries, it is legal to marry your third cousin or further. We do not know the exact extent that Yuka is Kouta's cousin. It could be through marriage (in that case, they are not blood related at all), they could be extremely distant cousins, or there could have been an adoption involved. It was never explicitly explained.

It is legal to marry your cousin (any type of cousin) here in the UK (but of course the vast majority of people still regard it very dubiously), just look at our Royal Family who have been intermarrying for ages! For example, Queen Elizabeth and His Racist Highness Prince Phillip are 3rd cousins. (The European monarchies kept it in the family for a similar reason as thundrakkon said with the nobles I think...now the Royal Family all look like horses from inbreeding [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif[/img]).
Yeah if they're not blood related then thats not really incestuous because they're not from the same gene pool...

The most up to date one is Anime-fin. I only download those are they are well made. The others were ok, but you'll do just fine with Anime-fin.
All righty, this is sort of off-topic, but since it seems that ignorance about this subject is rife, I'd better clear up some facts:
1) In practically every country in the world (with very few exceptions), it is entirely legal to marry your first cousin. It isn't considered incest, although it may be frowned upon. Japan is no exception - marriage between first cousins is legal.
2) One reason why it is frowned upon is that the closer you are related, the more similar your genetic makeup is. This means that any latent (recessive) "bad genes" may occur in both individuals.
Since this increases (by a small, but significant, factor) the likelihood of a reinforced negative gene, children born of closely-related individuals have a heightened probability of suffering from genetic disorders. There are many different genetic disorders - not merely Downs' Syndrome, although this is probably the most prominent one.
3) The likelihood of negative reinforcement of recessive genes increases drastically if both the individuals mating share one or both parents. This is the actual origin of the near-universal taboo on incestuous relations with siblings or half-siblings.
4) Even so, these are merely probabilities. The actual probability of first cousins having defective offspring is still very low, although it is higher than for the surrounding population.
5) Repeated inbreeding has the effect of producing a very small gene pool. Such a situation tends to produce significant genetic drift, resulting in the emergence of common characteristic traits - for instance, the Habsburg chin or the oh-so-prominent ears of the Windsors. Negative recessives which are present in such a small gene pool will tend to show up frequently - for instance, haemophilia among the European royalty. However, if they are negative enough to prevent the individual from procreating, they will winnow themselves out in short order.
Continual inbreeding, by the way, is one method used by animal breeders to fix desirable traits in a population.

Oh, and in german there is quite a bit confusion about the word "Elf". It was mainly introduced into the german language due to a translation error around 1850. Apart from all the LotR Fans (the german LotR uses 'Elben' btw, because of that confusion and Tolkien liked that very much as it distinguishes his vision of elfs from the old myths) an "Elf" is like a "Fee" (english: fairy, pixie, sprite, ...). The correct translation would have been "Alb", a somewhat goblin like creature that can be either good or bad, sometimes helps people, sometimes not (german "Alptraum" (nightmare) references these creatures sitting on your crest while you are at sleep, giving you a bad dream. A different word for them is "Nachtmahr", the word the english "nightmare" comes from).
And that's what people usually mean when they refers to german "Elfen" (if not in LotR context): an "Alb" -- a mythological, non human creature with some magical skills. There are "Lichtalben" (good to humans and quite angel like) and "Dunkelalben" (evil, more goblin like). "Dunkelalben" being the more common ones, as they lived on earth (opposed to heaven for the "Lichtalben"). But even "Dunkelalben" serve humans, despite their continues efforts to trick them, quite well once they were beaten and acknowledge you. Nasty and evil to about everyone but loyal and friendly to a selected few. "Alb" is a very old, nowadays seldom used word, warping us back into the time of the gleemen, giving us the next hint. In that time, songs were performed by gleemen (obviously) and these songs actually weren't songs like we know them, but tales of "Ritter" (knights) and other "Helden" (heroes) fighting fantastic creatures like the above mentioned "Alben" or "Lindwuermer" (sort of dragon). You may happen know one of the most famous, "The Nibelungenlied".
That is the context in which I think one has interpret the title or the translation I gave above. I can't provide an incisive english translation as I am not that familiar with medieval english specific terms, but meaningwise "elfen lied" translates to a tale/epic of non-human creatures (with the above mentioned attributes of an "Dunkelalb").
It fits the story very very well, but the japanese guy who came up with it has to be one hell of a freak.
On a sidenote, I just watched ep 9, [anime-fin] version, and I was really 'rotflmao' when "AJ News: mass naked child events occured earlier.." scrolled over the in-anime news broadcast tv screen.
