    Elfen Lied

Society doesn't make incest something we frown upon. Incest itself makes society frown upon it due to the risk factor in offspring. I don't think there is any species that reproduce through incest. It's not a social thing, it's a instinctual thing. It's built into our genes that incest is bad.

I think incestous feelings are okay because if you like someone, you like someone. But for your children's sake don't do it.

I know it doesn't make a difference, but the golden lion tamrin and some species of marsupials reproduce by incest at times. Of course this isn't a natural thing, and happens when some families are isolated because of deforrestation...

<@Terra> he told me this, "man actually meeting terra is so fucking big", and he started crying. Then he bought me hot dogs

Yeah, I meant by nature, species aren't supposed to incest.

We are not animals so we can. And we can adopt another baby anyway so theres no problem to it. This has gotten totally off topic.

If you are attrected to ur cousin its because you think shes hot or you like her personality. This has nothing to do with genetics

Heh. Yeah. In truth, it's not altogether revealed what are those genes (or corresponding gene products rather) that you might sense in the object of interest. Much of the research has concentrated on MHC gene alleles. These Major Histocompatibility Complex genes practically define our individuality on cellular level. On these are based, as the name suggests, whether a cell is recognized as belonging to the body of the host or not by the immune defence. The closer you are related to another person, the higher your MHC similarity (though only clones and identical twins have the exact same composition).

In many experiments animals have preferred partners with quite different MHCs. However, some experiments have also produced opposite results (with fishes, if memory serves).

Still, whatever are the gene products being sensed, they may not always automatically represent the differences or similarities in the multitude of genes we have. So, an attraction to a relative doesn't mean it's safe to reproduce with him/her. Besides, artificial perfumes and such act as counter measures against the natural instincts.

Interesting anime I must say. Tales of tradegy, love and life in general mixed in together with a unique storyline. It was very intriguing, moving and satisfying. It lefted me longing for more.
Talk about cruelity, madness and horror combined. Definately something i liked watching.

I want to download this but it only offers it in a 1-13 episode package. But on Animenfo there is 14 episodes only as a DVD? Do I need to watch the 14th episode for closure ?

episode 14 is something like episode 10 and just expands story a little but still extra.

"Life is hilariously cruel" by Bender

Episode 14 is somewhere between episode 10 and 12 in terms of the overall timeline. Half of the episode is a flashback that might help your understanding of the first episode.

I just finished the anime and it's the worst anime I've ever finished. The characters are so unrealistic that it insults the audience's intelligence.

The underlying tones of sexual attraction amongst the characters was getting annoying. Every single female blushing at the most minuscule sign of affection was just over-the-top. The incestuous story between Kouta and Yuka was WTF?

Not merely enough character development even in a 14-episode anime. Kouta's background is believable but Yuka's attraction for him as childhood friends is still unexplained. She just had the hots for him ever since they were little?

Elfen Lied is a very popular show with high ratings everywhere you find it. However, as with all shows that have character and individuality and thus can theoretically reach any manner of heights, it will eventually also divide opinions. Only those shows that try to cater to everybody gain uniform responses, though they inevitably also fall into the gray mass of averages.

There's really nothing peculiar there. Not every person likes the same stuff. And that's vital for any form of art to thrive.

Good post. Better than that jerk who impugned me because I didn't enjoy Elfen Lied as much as everyone else. What does elfen even mean?

  15. #575
It means "Elven" in German. The title means "Elven Song". Or maybe "Elf Song". Maybe it's Dutch.

  16. #576
Erm, I guess it has to do with the music box that Kouta owned but other than that I don't see how the title pertains to the story.

  17. #577
Maybe it's just a term for Diclonius's or those with horns. Though they never actually use that term. Maybe it's just like a way of indicating there's another race, that's not human that's capable of doing incredible things.

Just curious, why do you feel the title has to pertain to the story?

Bleach (well, I guess Ichigo's hair), Trigun, Honey and Clover, Pani Poni Dash, Utawarerumono, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, etc, many titles don't have an overt or direct connection to their contents.

'Silpelit' is also the name of a character of an opera by the author of the Elfenlied song, Eduard Mörike, also mentioned in that song itself. References to him appear only in the manga. In the anime, it's what the Director calls the infertile members of Lucy's kind.

I don't remember where I heard this but Bleach is actually a favorite of Kubo's. I can't remember if it was the name of a band or a song.

I haven't watched anime as much as other members here and every anime I've seen the title usually plays a part in the anime.

    But I see your point.
