Ok, for your XP firewall, I have found a step by step guide on how to forward the Bittorrent ports (6881-6999) which you can get here. Just follow this, and it will tell you how to forward the ports for Bittorrent on the XP Firewall (If I might suggest, you should just port forward 6881-6889 because port forwarding all of them one by one could take a very long time, plus those where the original ports Bittorrent used untill the range got extended). Now, if you could tell me what type of router you have (Linksys, D-Link, etc.) and the model number, I can give you a step by step guide on how to port forward on your router. Hope I could help.

I went and opened up 6881 through 6889, but now it's going even slower. It went from 15 Kbps to about 3 Kbps...

Well to tell you the truth, the main problem is because of the router, not the firewall so much. So once you port forward the router, the download rate should increase dramatically. For your router (Linksys BEFW11S4 V.2, you made a typo I believe by putting a 5 instead of an S), I have found a step by step guide on how to port forward. You can find this guide here. You will first have to set up a static ip address (there is a guide there too) and then just follow the steps for port forwarding (I suggest you just do port forwarding, port triggering is a little more complicated) and you should be fine. Also, remember the port range for Bittorrent is 6881 to 6999. If you need any help, just post. Hope I could help.

I dot some problem too I did open the ports 6881-6889, but then sometime the bittorrent work and most of the time it doesn't. To make bittorrent work I have to turn off my firewall. How to fix it?

RE: XP Firewall
stos..i just stumbled on this post...
Thanks SO much for your help and knowledge on this matter
I got my d/l rate from around 5-10 to 30 after port forwarding
But..I dont think I have a static IP so I'll have to do this every time I restart my comp
I'd set one up...but I heard every computer on the network must have a static IP if one does...my roomate has a mac...and I dont want to fuck with it
Anyways thanks again!!

RE: XP Firewall
Actually to tell the truth Agrippa, you really don't have to have a static ip address. When I port forwarded, I didn't make one and it worked just fine. Just make sure that your router is configured to use the dynamic ip address and you should be fine. Glad I could help.

RE: XP Firewall
you dont really need to make a static IP because most of the time, if you use the router DHCP it will give you the same IP again and again. unless by some weird incident it changes it. like me, my router kinda went funky and my internal IP got changed, but then you can easily tell the ports to forward to 192.168.1.101 instead of 192.168.1.100 all i had to do was change 1 number.

Edit: guess i should do a little more research about networking i was thinking there was a difference.

RE: XP Firewall
Well, this seems to be a common misconception. What you have (Linksys EW5HUB) is not a router but in fact a network HUB. You can't really port forward a HUB to my knowledge since there is no firewall in a HUB. If you have a router, I can give you a step by step guide on how to port forward. Hope I could help.
