Agreed on the Iced Earth thing with Barlow as the vocalist, but The Glorious Burden still kicked ass.

I wonder if these guys actually still use English professors to help write lyrics.

By the way, has anyone here gotten into Biomechanical yet? They are like Pantera with a power metal edge. I strongly suggest getting the songs Relinquished Destiny and Long Time Dead.

They are only two years old and people think they could make the metal world that much more interesting.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll add it to my evergrowing list of bands I need to get into.

Right now I'm listening to Anathema. They used to be doom/death metal but today they play atmospheric hardrock or something to that effect.
Their latest album, A Natural Disaster, is quite good. Pick it up if you want some beautiful and at the same time gloomy music.

nothing against the ripper either, but yeah.. he's just not barlow
and yeah... barlow is uber

glorious burden was a good album on itself, musicwise... I'm just not too big of a fan of the entire US theme... but that's just me

on a side note... evanescence didn't have a russian choir, or a bigass orchestra
though you'll have to agree with me on sharon's vocals improving dramatically... less squeaking and all that...

sonata arctica... *giggles*

sometimes I'm wondering why you look me and you blink your eye
*looks confused*
and it's a VERY sensitive ballad
then, the next song:
I cannot understand you, to me you live in a world of chaos
is that about their lyrics?

anyway, still like them a lot

also, nightwish's "billiges" in walking in the air are absolutely wonderful

Tarja's talking during the concerts is hilarious too, her spoken english is so damn broken it ain't funny.

And of course WT aren't -exactly- like Evanescence, they are vastly superior to that band, but the last effort felt like it was heading in that direction... if you know what I mean.
I don't think she's less squeaky, to me she sounds as overdramatic as she always does

Bump! Talk, fuckers!

Right now listening to Luca Turilli, I've given his solo project another chance and it's better than I thought especially the second (and newest album): Prophet of the Last Eclipse.

If you like Rhapsody you'll love this.

Are you kidding, GWAR is great metal. You just can't take the shit seriously. In that respect they're kinda like the Darkness, only with musical talent.

Warmen, the solo effort of Children of Bodom's keyboardist, is coming out with a new album (their third).
Right now I'm listening to the new single from that album, Somebody's Watching Me (cover of some 80's song).
It's pretty bad actually. But it's still funny because the guest vocalist is none other than Alexi Laiho (yeah, Bodom's vocalist) and he uses a clean voice half of the time. It's not the first time he does that, but it's equally weird every time and this time it's even... ehh... worse. Or something. Also, it's funny that he tosses in random cursing in the song. For example:

Chorus goes like this:

"I always feel like somebody's watching me
(Alexi input: HEY WHO IS THE MOTHERFUCKER WATCHING ME?)
I don't feel safe anymore
(Alexi input: NOT SAFE DAMNIT)"

Etc.

Well, hope the album is better.

If I'm not mistaken that was done by Maxwell in the 80's, and Michael Jackson actually sung the chorus.

I bet it was funny,. Alexi laying on the thick Swedish accent and all.

Yeah it was hilarious, but hey, he's finnish! I'm the swede.

Right now I'm listening to Running Wild, I'd call it heavy metal with a power metal edge. It's an old german band, has been around since the 80's, and their image is "piracy". I.e they dress themselves as pirates and their songs are about pirates and gold and treasure maps and etc. But damn, it's a really good band. My favorite albums:

Under Jolly Roger (1987, this was the album that established their pirate image)
Blazon Stone (1991, their most popular album)
Black Hand Inn (1994, my favorite album, perhaps their best)
Rogues en Vogue (2005, just because it shows that the old men still got it)

Also, the vocalist is called Rock n' Rolf. COOLEST NAME EVAR!

Blah, can't believe I didn't see this thread sooner!

Sonata Arctica - My favorite metal band. Their lyrics are frickin' ingenious, especially Don't say a Word.

Nightwish - Absolutely hate their newer songs, but I adore the older ones like Everdream and Dead Boy's Poem.

Within Temptation - Latest album was a bit too mainstreamed for my tastes. But I still did enjoy Angels and Jillian.

Dark Moor - Good Italian band with really unique vocals. Well, at least they used to be until the singer was replaced with some useless dumbfuck. I recommend A Truth Of Me, Dies Irae ( Amadeus ) and Wood Song.

Kamelot - Completely awesome band. Very nice themes.

Rhapsody - Whenever you want metal with lyrics composed by a man looking for the most epic words he can find in a dictionary. The standard Rhapsody song will go somewhat like this; "TEAAAAAARS OF BLOOOOOOOOOOD RAAAAGING IN THE ETERNAAAAAL STORM OF DRAGON POWER!" You probably get the point. The sad part is that it fuckin' rocks. Yes, I do love my Rhapsody.

@Nai: Good choices and as usual your tastes are similar to mine (this is really getting quite scary). You should Try Luca Turilli if you like Rhapsody (solo effort of the Rhapsody guitarist, very similar.

Kamelot was the first metal band I bought an album by. I love them to death.

Can't believe I forgot to mention Luca. My favorites would be Princess Aurora and King of the Nordic Twilight. They are indeed extremely similiar, altho I don't find Luca quite as brutal as Rhapsody. His songs tends to be a bit softer.
