Dark, serious music. Often accompanied by violins and lyrics about broken hearts. That is generally considered gothic music. Note that gothic is a genre in itself so there's gothic rock, gothic metal (of course) and even gothic pop. There is a significant difference between gothic metal & doom/black.Originally posted by: PossiblE
What is considered gothic music? I thought goths listened to metal genres... like doom and black metal?
Good examples of gothic bands are Type O Negative & Entwine. Listen to those and you'll find out what gothic metal is. It's a good genre to listen to when you want some emotional music. I'd point out HIM as example too as they actually are gothic, but they suck so much that I won't bring myself to doing that...
I've heard Type O Negative, didn't like them too much, I'll try Entwine.
I thought HIM was considered Glam Rock/Metal?
"gay" sums up HIM a bit better than glam rock
anybody listen to any Tool, they kick ass
no shit, best band ever ever ever lateralus and aenima are both in my top 5 albums
I listen to Tool as well, but they are not metal. That is why I did not mention them in this thread.
PossiblE, if you look back theres about 3 pages discussing APC/maynard/Tool already. and they are metal listen to ticks and leeches and tell me thats not metal.
I''ve heard Ticks and Leeches and Tool definately isn't metal. Their overall sound is too unique, they need their own genre.
fair enough. but if i had to catorgarize (sp?) them id say they were "prog metal"
Heh, Tool isn't talented enough to be prog, but it's your opinion.
Anyways, if you want to hear some good tunes listen to my winamp station right now, http://24.36.10.90:8000

If you think Tool is prog metal you haven't heard prog metal. Try Dream Theater & Symphony X.
HIM is considered gothic metal. Both HIM & Entwine are gothic metal of the finnish school, which sounds pretty unique. Entwine is however leagues better...
Well, it's time this thread gets back to the top.
A good band to check out is The Berzerker. Their sound is very crazy and unique, I've been listening to their cd this entire week. They are just too good.
I'm currently listening to german goth metal band Lacrimosa, quite sweet.
Other recommendations right now are Sonata Arctica's new album and everything by Battlelore.
Oh and Elvenking owns.
I'll definately have to check out Sonata's new album.
Mastodon's new album is great stuff too, I have to go buy it sometime.
Hello all, I've been away for awhile, but that's cuz this semester's been motherfucking hectic. I'll bore you guys with that later. My birthday is Dec. 8th, and this year, someone somewhere thought it would be a cool fucking joke to kill Dimebag Darrell as a present. I can't imagine that anyone who would even bother looking in a metal thread should need an introduction to this man, but I'll give it anyway, just in case. Dimebag Darrell aka Darrell Abbott was the guitar player for Pantera, one of the awesomest bands ever to grace the earth. When Pantera broke up, he and his brother formed Damageplan, which is an extremely cool band in its own right. As I've already stated, he died on december 8th of this year. Some fucktard decided to walk on stage and shoot him 5 times all in his midsection. The murderer was shot to death by some cop, but not before he took out three other people.
That's the gist of it. So I'm here to voice my grievances. Its too fucking bad that bastard got killed at that concert with the gentleness of bullet. I swear I'd kill the guy myself if given the chance. Too bad, right? Well whatever. I'm filled with grief. Sure I didn't really know the guy personally, but I feel that through his music, I somehow did. Pantera's music has been so important to me for years. Always enhanced a good mood. Always alleviated a bad one, or helped me to focus. It's pathetic that I don't have the words to explain this. Anyway, RIP Dime. As I'm sure has been said millions of times since last wednesday, you'll be missed, sorely missed.
If anyone actually care, I'm currently preparing for finals and I'll be back in a couple of weeks. Take good care everyone.

Now you will pay for your freedom in the currency of honest toil and human blood."

How is it that the hip hop thread has been on the front page for so long while this one has gotten lost? Time to bring it back. I need some music suggestions. Does anyone know any good metal bands that do primarily instrumental music? I like to put music on when I'm reading or studying, and sometimes I find lyrics too distracting. All I have at the moment that fits this category is Apocalyptica, and I'm starting to get tired of them. I need some more variety. Ideas?
That must have been a mega bump because I didn't even see this topic, I certainly would have restarted it.
KitKat, try John Petrucci's (Dream Theater) new album, Suspended Animation.. you could go with some Finntroll and Exhumed as well.. I think I recall Exhumed being instrumental, and a really heavy band as well.

yay this thread is back. if anyone has been in hibernation and just come out for the summer, you might not have heard the new NIN album is out (well, a couple of weeks back now) and is pretty damn awesome. id say theyve gone back more to their pop roots ala pretty hate machine rather than industrial metal like some of their other stuff, but damn with teeth is still good. lots of dif pace and style mixed up in the album and i think it works well. highlights are probs "only", "all the love in the world", and their single "the hand that feeds", altho i bet other songs will grow on me in time just like with everything else trent reznor produces.
other than that, ive been listening to At The Gates who are pretty good, heavier than my usual tastes, but worth checking out
With Teeth is pretty good, it took a few spins for me to realize.
Also At The Gates kicks ass.. but my favorite metal band is probably Hypocrisy.
Peter Tagtgren is my LORD AND SAVIOR.
