Dark, serious music. Often accompanied by violins and lyrics about broken hearts. That is generally considered gothic music. Note that gothic is a genre in itself so there's gothic rock, gothic metal (of course) and even gothic pop. Good examples of gothic bands are Type O Negative & Entwine. Listen to those and you'll find out what gothic metal is. It's a good genre to listen to when you want some emotional music. I'd point out HIM as example too as they actually are gothic, but they suck so much that I won't bring myself to doing that...
