Yeah, a whole lot more came to mind after reading the rest of the posts, including narutaru (despite the ending), cowboy bebop, gundam wing, and many others competing for 4th and 5th position. Real hard to choose.

These are all about ll this close to eachother, as are a lot of other anime on my list. It's hard to separate a top 5 list. This is only right at this moment. In an hour, it will have changed. Except the top 2.
My top 5 anime not yet mentioned in this list:
1. Haibane Renmei: Solid drama, very nice twist at the end, excellent art.
2. Fruits Basket: Yeah! Shoujo!
3. Revolutionary Girl Utena: You would think it's shoujo, but it's way too dark and NC-17. It's by
some of the same people that did Sailor Moon, and my theory is that after Sailor Moon
these people hated all high school students and wanted to make them suffer horribly, hence Utena.

5. Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances): mentioned 1x but deserves to be mentioned again
