XviD codecs, do they work differently on older operating systems?

Do codecs run differently on different operating systems? I ask because I'm trying to help someone run a bakasan episode since he can't seem to run it, even after having reinstalled his xvid codec. He's using window 98. I'd appreciate any help offered. Thanks.

I just recently installed some xvid codecs and now my audio won't play for any of my .avi files.
