I think people honestly criticize work like that because they think you havn't put enough work into the signature; like you simply stole a awesome looking render and threw it onto a mediocore background.

Thats bs, renders look bloody fucking amazing, and they're the centerpiece of your artwork.

Every one in a while its nice to add some kool effects to enhance it or blend it with the background, but if you have a brand spanking render, show it off.

I agree. Sometimes doing too much will ruin a perfectly good render. Text is can be unnecessary at times as well.

Still, this does not excuse skimping out on a bit more effort if it could make the sig that much better.

And just to add, every forum will have its own 'norms' of what it considers a good sig, shaped by the more influential members of the community. But at the end of the day, you're not factory-producing a product, you're creating art. You might get a lot of varied or even contradictory suggestions, but at the end of the day this is YOUR art, and the end result that makes you the happiest is the one you should go with.

In terms of your most recent sig, I prefer v1. The only thing that I find weird about it is that because there is no blending at the top but a lot of blending at the bottom, it evokes a decapitated floating head at first glance. I think making the bottom right side of her collar a little more defined would fix that pretty quickly. Otherwise, it looks pretty great to me.

It has been a very very long time.

Please be gentle, though I think it turned out well for the hiatus I've been on.

Here we have the original render.

    Super Spoiler Alert!

I totally forgot that it was a spoiler as well. Sorry I couldn't warn you earlier.

Lucifus has always been great with text, and I learned a lot from his style.

Trying something a bit more simple; these actually aren't the original, but the blond renders are just striking with the background, so I gave up on making a new Saya signature with this one.

I couldn't get the lighting right with the render, just too dark; not that these are perfect, but certainly better.

Made the background myself; and tried 3 renders; accepted these three.

    Comments?

Edit: Needed to work on my lighting; my currents the outcome.

Wow, a lot of discussion happened while I was sleeping.

Anyways, I know that every forum has their idea of what is normal for a sig, and what makes one good, and that ultimately the end result should be something I like... and I also know that I don't need to cover the render in every sig I make... I don't know about the text comment though... I feel like every sig deserves some sort of text... unless you have a big enough render/small enough space to not warrant any free space.

The main reasons I posted the unfinished pieces were to get feedback on the style (smudged background/smudging over the render) and, I guess feedback on the render as well (it takes a good render to make a good sig). I have gotten feedback and it seems that the general consensus is the background and render are nice, but the smudging over the render isn't to taste here. Not sure how much anyone will like my next sig then, since I have done the same thing. But when it is finished, I will post it for feedback as well.

I never intended to finish the Ikaros sig, it was just practice. Though I hope to refine it eventually... I want to display my own Ikaros everywhere!

As for Luci... Your Naruto sig is very nice. I didn't even realize the art was spoiler either (I don't remember that far back in the manga), and the background makes it flow really nice. It looks like for text you typed in white, then set to soft light with a lower opacity black stroke. Am I right? If so, I do that as well sometimes, but it never comes out as good as that one. For your other three... I feel like you can do better, to be honest. The first two renders seem really choppy. And I feel like the last one is suffering from the problem Kit said mine was (the floating, decapitated head). I'm guessing by "made the background (your)self" you started with a sky blue canvas and brushed the cloud effects? Or just used a cloud brush? Either way, it's nice. It feels a bit underwhelming though with nothing in the top half of the sigs (except for the Saber one, though I can't figure out what that is). Your current set is much better. The lighting fits really well. Though with that background, it's hard for me to imagine where the light would coming from.

Keep up the good work though.

Also, I hate typing so much/long that I get logged out of the forums =/...

Ya, I made those three really quickly; spent a good bit of effort on the last one though, its my favorite. Has alot of empty space, and the render isnt very defined (Did that bit on purpose, prefer it to the original render)

It just looks awesome to me.

I have to agree, a head coming out of the clouds does look pretty awesome, and in comparison to the other two, I like it the best (it's simplicity and the text are really fantastic). I think it's just his overly long neck that is throwing me off.

Oh, and that it feels blended in too much at the bottom... but I guess that's on purpose to make it look like it's coming out the cloud.

Thanks for the heads up AA.

@ Alhuin; btw, thanks for reviving this super dead FanArt section.

Ya, sky blue canvas and brushed the clouds in.

I think I'm going to redo that last one, because I think it could become something along the lines of 'perfect', at least, to the idea that I have in my head.

Also, its not that I don't like smudging renders, because believe me, if you look at my tutorials, you'll catch me smudging the hell out of them to reduce choppiness.

Its just that in the Ikaros signature, it really did give off a feel of floating head, because not even her neck was shown, and even some of her hair was cut out.

To me it just felt like there was half a floating head in a pretty awesome background.

The smudging can stay, just to a lesser extent at the bottom corners.

    More:

Playing with the same glowy background style; and believe me, It wasn't until I was just about done that I realised the render had red on it.

It took me by such surprise I went all the way back in my history thinking I had accidentally done something to cause it.

That was my goal. Glad I (seemingly) accomplished it.

Very nice Barret sig. For the render... was there a set of all the FFVII characters, or was that the only one? Anyways, I noticed the red offhand, just like you mentioned. If you really wanted to, you could probably blend that in/clone stamp it away. But it doesn't take away from the sig. Or you could put like a red light somewhere on that side.

Also... so are members allowed to have sigs bigger than 400x100 now? Or is there something special you have to do?

I had just that Barret render. Can't remember where I got it, I've had it for a while, but had no motivation to do anything with it.

I'm surprised how quickly I'm remembering how to operate Photoshop.

As for the limitations; I won a contest hosted here to unlock my 500 x 125 limit.
Shinta has both this and a 125x125 avatar limit.

As for Darkshadow, I don't have a clue, I forgot to re-size it for him, but it didn't seem to matter.

    Free signature anyone?

I was gonna do something with these three, but got lost halfway.

Edit: O, and heres an avatar if ya want er DS.
