aren't we all silly. anyway, reading the manga again, i think shikamaru predicted several moves ahead. waaaaay before she actually does the genjutsu, shikamaru says "why don't you at least ready your daggers" even before she repeats that her flute is her only weapon. so i think he was already trying to get her in close range. interesting.
