im wondering, whats the difference between rap/hip hop/ and r&b ?
please explain
My guess is the beat.
Rap is all fast beat and words... things you can bounce up an' down to.. but not exactly dance to..
Hip Hop is kinda fast beat, with words to match.. but you can dance to the music.
r & b has a slower beat than them both. Think Whitney Houston's "I will always love you".
its all just music to me!
Hip-hop is the culture, rap is the product.R&B,I guess its that slow Tony Braxton type stuff.
Jessia,I like the major avatar...
Comming from NYC which is about 2nd ghettoest next to detroit.
R&B is a Slowish sort of music mostly about romance and love and less about "bling bling" and gangs. Similar to a boy band group such as nsync but not pop. Listen to Girlfriend by B2K
rap is a Hardcore rhyme with curses gangs cursing and bootylicious. it deals alot with the ghetto life. Street life if you would want to call it. where police misjudge people and hate. Go listen to wanksta by 50 cent
Hip hop is a "softcore" version of rap with less curses and has rhyme but it deals with every day issues. Try Where is the love by The Black eye peas.

Yes u can tell rap from pop. Pop has more of a whiteish tone to it. one of the most named one rite now is Hillary duff (she cant sing but looks good) and britney spears. Oldies such as Nsync and back street boys the ORIGINAL boy bands their pop has no rhyme lyrics what so ever. in order to make rap, rap it has to have rhyme in it. There are a combination of pop and rap music such as Hillary duff and lil romeo- Uhh i forget which song... but yea.
its all just rubbish to me.
rap is talking to a background beat (*WOW*), hip hop is the same, but this time its all black american culture, and its all about how well u can "put a cap' in yo' ass" and generally kill other ppl for no reason other than u saw it on tv. r&b is like more poppy, less violent version of hip hop with more singing.
rock and metal forever
R3n has no idea what he is talking about.
Basically Hip-Hop the culture. Rapping what is done . R&B basically soulful singing.
Nowdays people wanna break rap and hip-hop they thesame but people wanna place them as diff. genres and break it up like they did rock music.
R&B and Hip-hop two diff genres though.
Plus there can be diffrenet types of rappers.
The original rap songs weren't very fast actually. They were mainly party songs with a lot of beat. Hell, if you listen to the rap songs in the 70's it has more to do with the sound of the base than the lyrics. That changed over time of course. Artists began to do "rap remixes" of existing songs by turning up the base and often increasing the speed, then bringing in new lyrics. The type of rap most people here seem to be thinking about is the trendy "gangster rap" with lyrics like a really bad film noir. Don't confuse this with rap in general.
Hip-hop is the culture which began to emerge from the rap scene in the late eightees and early nineties.
R&B is simple. Just look at the name: Rythm and Blues. The original Blues artists were typically old men who sang slow elegies about all the trouble life has brought them. When younger people began to sing the blues in the sixties and seventies they added more rythm. Of course, now it sounds more like pop music because that's a more profitable business.
No that that's all explained I have to laugh at this:

Wow, you must be really young. Not only do you think that Back street boys are oldies, you seem to think they're the original boy bands. I guess you can't remember New kids on the Block.

Dude what are you talking about.Commercial rap is pop now, don't try and school me on this subject.Do you know what pop means...Popular.Pretty straightfoward.
Rap doesn't have to be "hardcore",that's bullshit. Its people selling an image which you buy.Go learn the roots of the culture,b-boying,graffiti,the G.O.A.T's.Pick up a Old school Krs-one album, listen to Rza,check out the Rocksteady crew and how they get down.
www.rocksteadycrew.com
Todays hip-hop is bullshit,and sad.
For the most part rap sucks ass. 80's rap was okay early 90's was okay, but it’s all shit now. wtf... who cares about the size of your tires.... trying to make up for your small dick by having oversized rims and tires? I also hate how they try to sell rap off as being part of "Black culture" Broken grammar and dreams of wealth are simply a byproduct of poor education and impoverishment. A lot of Black people want nothing to do with rap or the association with it. As a whole it demeans and depicts black people as being dumb violent druggies. The rap of today is about broken grammar, fighting over who has the most money to waste on pieces of rocks ( gold, diamonds ) objectification of woman, and violence. It’s so funny to.. Poor middle american white kids buy into the "hip-hop culture" most of them don't understand it’s as much of an act as wrestling is. The worst part is aside from sports, rap... And the wb.....evilness... there really aren't that many black people seen in the media. When the general public sees some moronic rapper stumbling across words in an interview or reads about how some 19year flunking threw high school just signed an NBA contract worth 13 million it sets the stage for misconceptions, and stereotypes.
I can't really say anything about objectification of woman because I'm a pornoholic....

what u talking about, hip hop is a lot worse than heavy metal. slipknot isnt heavy metal btw, its jst crappy retards that dress up in clown suits and take themselves seriously. if u wanna hear some heavy metal go get some inflames, slayer, or soulfly. cant beat it the guitarwork from bands such as inflames, and opeth is unrivaled by any other type of music. theyre hands must be lightning fast!
thats what u call musical talent, not some guy "rapping" about how hard life is when hes a f*cking millionaire. jeez
altho i admit some hip hop is good (ie. not gangsta rap). for instance the beastie boys i love, got all their albums, once they left the scene its all gone down hill.

first of all, the post above me shows an airheaded person acting stupid. (nothing personal dude, but calling heavy metal satanic is just silly)
second, i've been listening to hiphop (or.. rap O_o) for as long as i can remember. but a few years ago, i just grew tired of it. i think 50 cent, eminem, puff daddy and nelly are spawns of satan sent to our realm to leech, confuse and abuse our minds. i still listen to some 'underground' rap, like old wu tang stuff, rakim, jedi mind tricks, and.. basically anything from philly. usually i listen to metal and rock and stuff like that. it's easier to connect to and enjoy. you can only take so much of digital samples and beatmachines. live instruments are so much nicer to listen to (if you ever wondered why you like the WHR opening so much, now you know it's aaaaall live-ish). i just can't call some mtv rapper 'an artist'. that's like insulting jimi hendrix, pete townshend, etc. i blame rap videos, mtv, bet and parents for all the teenage shit that goes on.
third, i still think new rap and pop are kinda one and the same. only the style of singing varies. take the music form a nelly song and compare it to justin timberlakes music. it's aaaaall the same it's not interesting. heh and there were many many boybands before bsb and nsync, like new kids on the block, east 17, take that, etc. i know, cause i used to listen to pop and rap and all that stuff, so i'm not just talking out of my a-hole.
so, to sum it up -- rap is very good, if you listen to the right performers who don't think business first. but there's so much more better music that you can actually admire and enjoy for years, and that doesn't die the moment it's off the charts. example - when was the last time you've heard "i'll be missing you" by puff daddy? yep, years ago.
Extremely well said, shadowmantis. Although the previous poster said "cept for heavy metal and that santanic shit" - he wasn't saying heavy metal is satanic. But yeah, I agree.
I think I know precisely what I mean
when I say it's a schpadoinkle day
Talk about gernalization. It would be easy for me to say all heavy metal is about Drugs sex and wanting to kill yourself and and it take no talent to scream on a mic but if it took no talent I would do it and become rich. If you don't like the genre cool but saying it take no real talent is pretty ignorant. Only people who are molded by a company (example Milli Vinnli) have not talent. If you wanna hear rap I suggest not listening to Emeniem ,Nelly, Chingy ,50( unless it older mixtape joints) about most Mtv rappers (they are exceptions) period. I am glad though no one said somthing stupid likeI hate rap but Em is the greatest rapper ever. And shadow the song missing you came out in 97 be seirous you expect to be all over the place people still listening to it. Haven't heard Nirvana teen spirt track in years either

i never said nirvana was awesome bands like nirvana MADE mtv.
but that's just my point. anything you see on mtv has a 2 month lifespan. you don't see tool clips on mtv. or the who clips. but hey, i (and a lot of people i know) have been listening to it for years, and it never gets boring but it's all about tastes and stuff, so you go listen to your puffy and 'em', and i'll stick to my 30 minute guitar solo's.
