You must not be reading the same manga as the rest of us.
Itachi doesn't want the Kyuubi chakra. AKATSUKI DOES. What Akatsuki wants doesn't necassarily reflect what ITACHI wants.
Just because akatsuki wants the kyuubi doesn't mean that they are weak. We have no clue what their plans are.
Don't dismiss this hypothesis.
1. Kimimaro was the strongest in his village (potential Hokage).
2. With Kimimaro's body they could have more easily vanquished Konoha.
3. Kimimaro was also an heir to a clan that posses the most perfect and most powerful bodies of all; and inherited all their abilities (Blood Line limit).
4. Oro prefered Kimimaro over Sasuke, but when Kimimaro became ill, Oro needed to find another Host. Sasuke is simply, sloppy seconds.
5. We don't know how strong Itachi is. I know everyones going to say he beat, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Basically, he basically gave the jounins a hard time (jounins that Kabuto could have given a hard time), and he ran away from Jaraiya. If that's enough evidence for some of you folks then, that's okay. But for me he needs to prove himself a little more. Time will tell how tough he really is.

As for the escape.. yeah. This has been discussed to death and back here. I think Itachi would mop the floor with Jiraiya, honestly. nothign is perfect;----perhaps perfect for orochimaru's goals, but no body is invincible. im sure kimimaro is strong, but on another point any bloodline limit could be considered perfect depending on ones goals. Like Hand to Hand combat for the Hyuuga, or jutsu learning etc for Sharingan, or water manipulation for Haku. just cuz tey say its perfect doesnt mean hes ultimate. and Neji inherited all his families jutsu as well, and he isnt perfect either. just good for some situations, and im sure kimimaro isnt good for everything.
we know that Kimimaro's abilities were stronger then Uchihas - this includes Itachi as Sasuke has more potential, and to prefer Kimimaro over Sasuke means hes pretty damn strong.
We'll never know exactly how strong because of the illness though but think of it in this way, Sasuke has been said to possess more potential then Itachi - so if hes only a SECOND choice, imagine how damn strong Kimimaro could be.

Kabuto fought Tsunade, Shizune, summoned Manda and two snakes and then took a rasengen in the stomach and STILL SURVIVED TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY.
we're yet to see what Kabuto can really do, he has a history of playing down his abilities (failing the genin exam 3 times, chuunin exam 6 times) and refering back to his eyes in the forest of death we can see that theres something big coming.
As for Itachi - Kakashi said he was yet to show us all his powers BEFORE he used the Mange Sharigan, Zabuza has also beaten Kakashi with one move, just like Itachi beat Kakashi with Mange Sharigan.
In terms of mystery over their exact extent of powers Kabuto is unknown
as for all those people that use the defence 'Itachi was too tired to fight Jiraiya' look at what Kabuto did and compare.

kabuto had a responsibility of taking care of orochimaru, that's why he didn't run away.
and after itachi and kisame ran off, kisame asked itachi "why is a retreat necessary for you."
there's a lot of crap that can counter my argument and there's a lot that can counter that counter argument. so blah blah going around circles is awesome.
btw, when you say that zabuza beat kakashi with one move and the move you're talking about is the water prison or whatever, how do you know that zabuza can kill hm without breaking the prison? maybe nothing can penetrate it from inside or from the outside. and if that's the case, it's more of a draw.
Akatsuki is just a gather of outlaws, i don't think that there is a leader actually...
Orochimaru know many seals and have experience, but itachi vs orochimaru would be a nice fight? they haven't meet in the manga yet.
Well you could also say Kakashi wasn't fighting as well because he had to worry about Naruto, sasuke, and sakura.
When the battle really started you could see that kakashi was above zabuza's level.
Kakashi was protecting Asuma and Kunerai vs Itachi too.
anyway its useless discussing this, powers can change at any time due to the fact that its an anime/manga.
Itachi could be beaten by someone way below his level if the situation was right.
