i recently got a motherboard with the nvidia nforce 2 chipset and my mic is barely picking up any sound at all. i used to have a VIA chipset and it picked up sound great. now its just scratchy with a hint of sound. if anyone knows about this problem or how to fix it, can you please help? i really REALLY need my mic =\
ive tried messing with the volume control, reinstalling the chipset drivers, and updating them. nothing is working =\

hm... i myself have the Nvidia Chipset. What motherboard do you have?
It could be you require a Nvidia program known as Nvidia Soundstorm, which utilises the chipset properly. That's what i use, but i have the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard. Please state your motherboard spec so i may take a look at it's details so that my advice is more accurate =P

i have the MSI K7N2 Delta. it came with a cd that has a bunch of drivers for the chipset including the audio, but im not sure if it came with soundstorm =\
