It's clearly stated in episode 2 - I can't remember the exact phrase, too lazy to look it up, but something along the lines of "from now on, we're rivals".

half of that isnt rivalry. itachi doesnt care about sasuke. and since when was there a rivalry between 3rd hokage and orochimaru? and naruto - konohamaru isnt a rivalry either. konohamaru looks up to naruto.....
I think Kakashi and Gai's rivalry is the best. Come on not only are they hilarious when they are in competition(which is only like once or twice in the series).
Im gonna stick with them.
Dammit i want to change my vote, i voted for Neji and Lee but i didn't see Gai and Kakashi.... Oh well...
I voted Rock Lee & Neji. The two are my favorite characters, and the fact they share a rivalry on the opposing sides of the "genius" complex, only adds to their relation.
If I did not vote for them, I would have given it to Kakashi & Gai. Their rivalry is long-lasting and we really have no idea how powerful they are. I think the fact that people are desiring to finally see them duke it out (not Janken-style) is what draws people to this one ..

I just love Konahamaru!!!! When I think back to the first few chapters I get all smiley. But Kakashi/Gai is the best. I love how Kakashi feigns disinterest just too piss off Gai-sensei. Hee hee hee.
Kakashi goads Gai because he knows exactly the kind of person Gai is.
I think Kakashi and Gai are one of best rival groups because they are the most different out of the rivals.
Neji and Lee have different ideologies but they're both taijutsu specialists.
Naruto and Sasuke both want to prove their worth, with Naruto becoming Hokage and Sasuke killing Itachi.
Sakura and Ino, well, you know.
Kakashi is a master technician and wielder of over 1000 jutsu, Gai is a master of taijutsu so much that when Kakashi saw Sasuke using the Leaf Shadow Dance, he said it was "Gai Taijutsu." Their personalities clash completely, and they both acknowledge each other. They're the rivals who aren't bitter towards each other or anything. Friendly competition that has not turned sour.
Though for some reason I suspect Kakashi used to be a complete asshole when they were young, and the goading he does harkens back to times when he was the genius and Gai was the loser.
Though I think the best rivalry is Naruto/Gaara because they understand each other so well, even if they've only had one fight. It also creates the notion that if Naruto were in Gaara's position, he'd have done the same thing. And imagine a Gaara-type character with Kyuubi.
Kakashi feigns disinterest?? I think he's really not interested at all in fighting Gai from the beginning. Whereas Gai wants so much for Kakashi's attention and recognition. Something like Naruto and Sasuke.
But intense rivalry can turn sour, just like Orochimaru and Jiriaya.. Same with Naruto and Sasuke, when the more talented one realises the "idiot" is getting better and surpasses him.
Kakashi's the smart one by not caring at all about rivalries with his cool and 'so what' attitude.
