it probably stands for something in Japanese (DUH), which means something along the lines of "special assasination ninja squad" or some such stuff.

Anbu team consists of highly skilled ninjas who carry out various tasks that can include assassinations or security. The Anbu often wear face masks made to look like animals. It is never made clear just what rank Anbu ninjas belong to. Due to their elite status, some may regard them as Jounins. It should be noted that Kabuto, a single Jounin, defeated several Anbu with no trouble. This could add to the arguement that they are high level Chuunins, instead.

the anbu aren`t chunnin level!!!!! there a special team of ELITE ninjas!! kakashi was in it and he`s a high level jounin. kyboto er however u spel it is really strong he is as strong a kakashi who used to be am ANBU leader. so its not that ANBU aren`t strong its that kyboto (again i can`t spell) is really strong. y do u think he protects orichimaru, he would have way more ppl protecting him if his protector was only a regular jounin. watch the anime or read farther in the manga

Don't mention the manga in here please. And just for a good speculation, i don't think kabuto is anywhere near kakashi's level, oro is just an ass for saying that.

kabuto is not jounin
he may be at that level but he is still just a genin
that he defeated lots of jounin only tells us that this level consists of a very large power variation top to bottom

ok i explained this in the thread that this was talked about. "Naruto" IS NOT AN ENGLISH WORD. the letters "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz" ARE NOT ENGLISH LETTERS. neither englishman or americans made up these characters. when something is written in these characters, it is called romanization. the japanese use an alphabet that they "borrowed" from china. this alphabet can be converted into roman characters. the word naruto is the romanization of the japanese characters, na, ru, and to. also, if you look to the bottom right of the word "Naruto" in the opening, you will see the katakana version of the word "naruto."
