What a bunch of gooners.

Maomao's dad actually seems shifty as hell.
He seems normal enough to me. Just soft spoken.
Good jab at Maomao having no common sense, and Jenshi's pouting about being ignored episodes ago was funny. I expect this will lead us into an arc with Loulan, now that fruity ice contact has been made. Apparently there is a chronic lack of problem solvers in the emperor's love nest...
She may ask him for information about the dessert, or ask for it to be reproduced; either way she'll quickly realize the eunich has no power over frosted treats.
episode 40. we're nearing the point the manga got to, probably at the final part of the season.
I guess the color-blindness thing is important for something.
Well never mind, looks like resurrection lady is the eunich after all...
So, what is the significance of insect girl being literate (just before getting taken hostage?) For a second, I suspected she might be Loulan in disguise...
The bloodline came from West. In the context of this show, might as well call it West Asia. Relative to not-China, that'd be Central Asia.
The dude could be from the bloodline, but also could be simply from that region. Add that to the whole caravan thing, and it'd suggest that there's an attempt by the Central Asian nation/s to sabotage the royalty of not-China.
I'm glad I missed last week's episode and had to catch up this week because that was a hell of a cliffhanger.
If it's not Isuzu-chan Mii~
Sabotage? Or re-introduce? Remember that the color blindness is considered a trait of the true bloodline. Which traces itself back to the original inhabitants of this land before it was taken over. And there's this secret sect of advisor women that has supposedly been controlling the true bloodline the whole time.
Sabotage as in to disrupt the current state of affairs.
The "founding mother" came from afar, got pregnant with local leadership, which spawned the current royal bloodline. It's a paternal system thereon wards though. The founding mother sought to maintain her bloodline's influence (or at least its presence) within this system by making sure the colour-blind gene was passed on from ruler to ruler (or with the aid of a concubine with such a trait).
In this light, I'd say they're sabotaging because they're interfering with the current royal bloodline's inheritance.

Episode 42
-------------------
"You look like my rapist" does hit differently.
It's a bit weird to think that she's never met Jinshi after all this time, but not impossible.
Imagine Maomao's dad being screwed over by having two royals deliver at the same time again. That would be unfortunate, and as good as he is - someone would probably pin the blame on him again unless Maomao helps out right at the end (if this scenario were to happen).
I wonder what the point of Suirei coming back into the palace is. She failed her assassination attempt and successfully escaped despite the side effects (I'd guess she essentially had a stroke). Her cover's blown now, as is Loulan/Shisui's.
It's possible for capturing Maomao as a hostage to be their end goal, but it didn't seem like the trap was entirely intentional. She didn't intend to go to the clinic that day, but Loulan had already told her attendants that she wasn't coming back.

this hits hard.
I'm a bit confused about the connection, the dead lady was the host of the scary stories society (and maybe a ghost?), and she was related to the concubine who gave to a girl before the current emperor was born. so that baby girl should be around 40 today, and can't be suirei. but what's the connections with shisou's wife?
he's been managing the place for six years, but there's no reason for him to go there and for her to leave the infirmary. he hangs out with the major consorts, but probably not so much with actually running the court. It's a bit weird to think that she's never met Jinshi after all this time, but not impossible.

Currently Watching: probably a show directed at 9 years old girls, lets be honest.
You know the important distinction between Batman and me? Batman is fictional. In real life, there isn't always an alternative.
Apparently, he only really looks like the attacker when smiling...
Still counts, victory dance!
Not entirely sure, either, but I think old emperor did have relations with grave woman to birth fake-eunich/assassin, but she (as a baby) got deported with the doctor she had an 'affair' with (Loulan's dad) though she herself could never leave the rear palace. Shisui/Loulan herself came from the same father, but a different mother, because of the age gap. Also, the previous emperor has only been dead for about 6 years, I think. This whole thing is the 'doctor's' family's revenge on the rear court.
I'm sure that is at least partially wrong. Please correct me!
Whatever their plan is, it's related to what Jinshi said, resentment against the entire Inner Palace System as a whole. Suirei's grandmother was imprisoned in the inner palace, and Suirei's mother was taken out of the Inner Palace by the doctor who fathered her. We don't really know what connects Suirei and Loulan, but their relationship in the little stroll through the woods implies they are very close and have known each other since childhood.
Meanwhile, the implication that Lahan brought to Jinshi's attention is that someone is either skimming off the profits of grain sales or buying a shit ton of grain and certainly buying a huge amount of metals. Those two combined make for one very obvious conclusion. Someone is building an army, and a big one. It doesn't really matter if it is the grain itself or the profits from them, those go into feeding/supplying/paying an army at the quantities they're talking about.
What connects all these things is almost certainly Loulan's father, who just so happens to carry the same colorblind gene of the current line of Emperors.
Hmm.
Maomao's dad's freakout causing an explosion with real damage was uncharacteristically cartoonish for this show.
I was also surprised to find out he just... had an adopted accountant son.
episode 43, they skipped out on one of the side details I was really excited about.
Suriei not going to the festival probably has some meaning about where she stands in the village. more color-blindness stuff.
It still bugs me that they're worshiping the fox spirit, but the person who symbolizes the fox is Lakan (maomao's dad). shouldn't they be worshiping a tanuki spirit?

I'm not sure that white tanukis are a thing. The origin of the fox story differs between these Western people and Lakan so I can accept that.
Shenmei seems like the type that would beat Suirei.
Suirei had the foresight to see that Maomao would probably get into trouble, and gave her a hairpin as a protective charm. That's what's going to save her from getting cut down (to those who don't know she's a hostage).
