    Muv-Luv Alternative

    Muv-Luv Alternative

The central core to the Muv-Luv universe gets an adaptation of its own.

In 1973, the invasion of an extra terrestrial life form, the BETA, began a war that has driven mankind to the brink of extinction. In an attempt to counter the BETA's overwhelming strength in numbers, mankind has developed the humanoid weapons known as TSFs, deploying them on the front lines of their Anti-BETA War all across the globe. However, mankind still lost the majority of Eurasia to the superior numbers of the marching BETA. For nearly 30 years, mankind has remained bogged down in its struggle against the BETA with no hope in sight. (Description by CR)

    -------------------

No surprise, like the previous adaptations before it, Schwarzesmarken and Total Eclipse, Muv-Luv Alternative begins with another group who isn't part of the main cast, and everything goes horribly.

Muv-Luv's Unlimited/Alternative shock factor is certainly diminished at this point, but it is worth remembering that the primary setting of Muv-Luv was one of the earlier novels to do this type of setting well, and it's also the one who has done it the best. I have no idea how deep they're going to go into the lore of the Muv-Luv setting, and I'm at least a little surprised they're going right to Alternative (considering the franchise is meant to be viewed with this one last). The main continuity is like 90 hours across two games, so we'll see how this goes (and no, I still haven't actually played them, but did recently buy them).

But the production values are high, the BETA are grotesque as always, using CG in a modest way to do it, and the voice acting was pretty good. The TSFs look great. I think most of the worry from the fanbase is about how this adaptation is gonna go. There's not be an announced length of this, so we'll find out.

Its been a while since I felt those feels... I did read the VNs years ago, and it is surprising that they adapted alternate without even seeming to mention the original generic harem it spawned from. I expect it will stay that way.

Humanity fighting a losing battle against an insurmountable foe, that happens to loom over walls on occasion... Where have I seen that before (kidding, I know this was out 5+ years before AoT)? Still fun in a depressing kind of way, and this was handled well enough that I almost forgot the other poor series this has spawned up 'til now. I'll consider those filler if this is going to attempt to adapt the main VN's storyline. Hype.

    Intensely sharp drop in quality...

    Not a great sign.

This also looks like it was more made for people who have played through all of the games.

    I'm gonna drop this.

The anime is definitely rushing through things, that much I can tell even without knowing the story. It feels very much like an adaptation meant for those who have already completed the games despite the producers claiming that the entire point of the anime was intended to get more viewers/fans involved with the franchise. Including that being the reason they switched VAs on the main cast.

They're botching the aim of bringing in new fans very badly. Both Total Eclipse and Schwarzesmarken were better at introducing the world and getting me interested in the franchise.

I'll just play the games instead. They went on sale right as the anime was starting so I grabbed them.

    Episode 5

You know how rushed the story lines are and how MC is constantly in speed mode?
It suddently fits when they do a mock battle.

That battle was awesome. Really fun to watch, lot of stuff happening, everything was fast and swift.
Not like "super amazing high budget stuff", but it looked well done, considering what I actually expected to watch.

The UI was pretty awesome to look at as well when they took damage and all that stuff.

When they dodged the sniper bullet and Unit 06 was still mid air slowly falling to the ground with the momentum still intact and the boosters adjusting slightly and then full throttle just when he was about to hit the ground again to stop the momentum.
Pretty cool stuff overall with the sound design and the camera placement.

And that short ego-shooter scene with her panicking and shooting into the smoke while the purple bullets hit some random buildings inside the smoke and then seeing the green bullets hit her in first person.
    Nice little details everywhere.
