I agree is it logical for Paul to make those judgements and say those words, but Rudy still had no idea the teleport spread that far. They were at the very center. So what else was he going to do?

Paul's messages were everywhere? Bullshit. Paul says they were posted at Wind Port (the demon continent's only port), but Rudy's limited knowledge was that they were the only ones sent away. Dead End arrived to depart the same day that Roxy's party with Paul's former members arrived. My bet is that the dwarf reposted the message there.

Paul just jumps to conclusions like he always does.

Rudy is hurt even more by this because Paul is essentially betraying him. In his past life, all his family ever did was criticize him. Justifiably...maybe. But the trust Paul had in his son, enough to send him away on his very first job at a young age is just ripped away from Rudy and suddenly nothing Rudy has accomplished the entire year and half means anything because Rudy didn't do what he should have, even though he wouldn't ever have known. So Rudy is taking the blame for something he absolutely shouldn't. Rudy's past life patterns return in force, throwing up out the window even thinking about talking to Paul about it to calm him down.

This is why Eris' rage upon seeing him down in the dumps is so moving. She sees his wounds but more importantly, the beaten way he's acting and immediately flies into vengeance mode.

I suppose it is still ultimately unreasonable, from the layman's perspective, to think that he's asking too much from his teenager son, but this kid has been out maturing Paul himself since he was 8, and Paul knows it.
Yeah, but he was literally expecting Rudy to solve a problem Rudy didn't even know existed.

    Unfathomable?
A few inferences make that less likely.

    1. There aren't teleportation spells/mages common enough that we have seen one, or that Roxy would have taught such a useful skill to her favorite student. It wasn't even called a mass teleportation, but a 'mana disaster'. Being at the epicenter of a bomb or blast does not suggest your body stopped it, especially when it reached the sky. To me, it's more strange to assume the shower of glowing light was localized.

    2. It's been 18 months. I think about waaaaaay more stupid things in passing over the course of 18 months, not including my family friends, and home. Slipped Rudy's mind, though. Was he in a position to do anything about deducing his family were also caught in that disaster? I don't think so, but those who were have taken action, and have done some good. How much good could Rudeus have done (for those afflicted) if he had noticed and directed his efforts? Paul thinks very much, and that not happening is at the potential expense of his Wife, Mistress, and daughter(s).

    3. Solving this problem is impossible, but damage control is still on the table. Paul thinks Rudy's great adventure, as he told it, was a bit too happy-go-lucky, and skimmed over the hardships and tough decisions he had to make. Son likes to emphasize success to his daddy; I get that, but dad's not sure if he's leading a rescue squad or a wake, so unfortunate timing. Paul's life is out of whack, and one of his greatest allies (his son) hasn't done anything but get back home with his companions while his mother is nowhere to be found after a year and a half.

    4. Assuming Paul's being faithful (a lot to assume, I know), he has been miserable for months.

Again, though, just inferences that these characters are free to have made or not, but justify to me Paul's frustration to a degree.

We've never been shown Rudeus trying to send a letter or get info on his parents or his village ?
But he got letters from his loli magician teacher. So at least mail works. And when he entered the guild, he had access to mail.

I'm not saying Paul is totally right, but it certainly feels strange Rudeus did not write anything... but then writing this: when Rudeus was sent to be taught magic, he was forbiden to write home.

Somehow it all pieces together, as mentionned it's possible Rudeus missed the chance to even have Paul's message by less than a day.
He was away from home with a condition to not write home or come back home.
He didn't think about the size of the disaster and with his past life personality, he somehow is a bit foreign to this world and this world's familly. So he didn't really seek familly as strongly as your average young boy.

As for the gallery, I guess they don't understand how a 12 years old boy can reply with such a level of spite and meanness and also fight like that with Paul.
And they probably agree with Norn to some degree, Rudeus has to stop. Because Paul is incredible to them, after all they follow his lead.

All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral, or fattening. And then: Golf.

Paul definitely s frustrated about himself, too.

But i think it's too myopic to criticise him too harshly for that. He surely wss happy to find Rudy - but that feeling simply didn't last long when the rest of the family is still in danger. Imagine your whole family was abducted. Your adult son returns. Are you happy? Ofc. Will you, however, quickly go back to worrying about your wive and underage daughter who are still in grave danger? Also yes. And if your son starts talking about his grand adventure how he escaped, you'd get angry, too.

People are too harsh on Paul.

Sure, but would Eris allow that? Would Roxy? The elf girl seems submissive enough, no issues there lol.

I remember him receiving letters from Roxy before the teleportation, but not from the Demon continent. But yes, letters work if you're in one location - which is funny because Paul is away from home.

No, they aren't. A. His son is NOT an adult. And B. Regardless of how difficult Rudy's own journey was or wasn't, the fact that the rest of his family is still missing is NOT HIS FAULT, and NOT HIS FUCKING RESPONSIBILITY!

And being like "Well it's okay that he's acting like a piece of shit...cause he's sad." is nonsense. He's acting like a piece of shit because he's a drunk fucking failure! And maybe if he wasn't sitting around getting so fucking drunk, he'd have more success finding his goddamn family!

How would he have received it anyway?

He's traveling under the name Rujierd. It would be weird for him to show up at the guild hall and be like "Hey, any messages for Rudius Greyrat? Yes, I know that's not my name, but I want his mail anyway."

He's a father of three already, and none of his children are adult, far from it. He's unable to keep himself in the role of a father. However, he has been drinking for months, likely, already, so you could say much of his bad behavior is due to that. Drunkards aren't in control of themselves. Still, booze doesn't crawl into his mouth on its own, so it's 100% his own fault if he is drunk and can't take Rudy's story as a son talking to his father. He almost acted like Rudeus wasn't his child at all but rather someone external who ought to help Paul to look for Paul's missing family.

So, no, I don't think anyone's too harsh on Paul.

Eris is from that perverted family of Grayrats. I wouldn't yet say anything about her stance. Maybe it would cost Rudy the money to hire a (lesbian) animal-ears maid to keep Eris company, though.

Meh, you guys lack some empathy. Someone can make mistakes and still be empathized with. Being drunk after years of unsuccessful search? Totally understandable. It's like you guys expect him to be running around nonstop (which he kinda was). Taking a break and drinking out of desperation is not a cardinal sin.

Adults are older kids only. Too many people ignore that.

Paul was a fairly well kept and motivated individual. He didn't get plastered drunk constantly after settling down with Zenith. And he most certainly didn't just "take a break." He looks like he got wasted pretty quickly and has been for some time to end up like he is now.

Rewatch the opening to Eps 11. I went back to validate I actually knew. And it was worse than I had remembered.

Paul posts the message in their own country. He admits he doesn't know where Rudy was sent to. He says he's going to where he is now (Zenith's home continent). He tells Rudy to search the Northern Part of the Central Continent...which is the opposite side of the sea from where Rudy and Eris were sent and where they all came from.

So Paul made an awful lot of assumptions, all of them completely wrong, and is angry at Rudy for failing to find a message he hadn't even gotten to at home, nor would he for another half a year or more at the pace they're going. Obviously, Paul then had the message re-posted elsewhere on the Demon Continent much more recently (presumably by Roxy, boss dwarf, and slut-elf).

Not Rudy's fault they spent the rainy season in the kemonomimi village.

Paul went East. Rudy was sent as far East as possible. And Paul expected him to search North of the Westernmost area. Paul's plan from the moment of the disaster is to park his ass where he is now, because that's the instructions he wrote to have all correspondence go to a year and a half ago.

If anything, we're being kind to Paul.

Paul has always been a misguided, assuming, cheating asshat. He was never a good father.

    No I don't.

I have a ton of empathy...for Rudy being run down by his garbage father. My empathy is for the actual victim of this interaction.

It's quite the assumption that Rudy just happened to catch him on an off day. The way he's being portrayed is as someone that's been that way for awhile.

Paul wasn't on an off day. He is a raging alcoholic. I mean, look at his face.

He doesn't even know if his family is dead yet. He shouldn't fall to despair just yet, but he did.

Yeah, it was not an off day since Paul's team was busy rescuing the teleportation victim boy from their home village. Paul was drunk at work, in other words. No doubt the others didn't take Paul with them when they snatched the boy because Paul would have just made it harder, being intoxicated. However, the plan clearly was to rely on Paul should something go wrong, like it did when Rudeus suddenly appeared.

    Episode 17

    ----------------

    Nice episode.

Turns out Paul was quite constructive about things until he lost hope, then took it on Rudy.

And despite this being a Paul/Rudy centric episode, we still got to see that Eris is getting stronger by the day as well.

I don't recognise the marking on Geese's backpack. Geese does have painted black nails though, and the only other person I remember with this is the Demon God. Could just be a demon continent thing.

Geese is apparently the most humanoid looking demon aside from the Empress herself (even if she's SD style) and Roxy's race. Really liked him dropping a little perspective onto Paul about how much worse the Demon Continent is, and I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Paul has never been there and doesn't know. I just assumed because the Dwarf and Roxy were so effortlessly fitting in at the port city that Paul's party had also been there at least once.

It's still a little put off by Tits' bikini armor. I assume it is like an in-joke, but it's really so out of place in this series, even moreso than the Demon Empress.

Honestly, I was hoping that Eris would fight Paul and completely kick his ass before there was any kind of reconciliation. I'll take the consolation in Rujierd had to punch her in the face and knock her out to prevent that from happening though.

Norn being the only one remotely interested in the figurine...hah.

    edit:
No, I don't feel bad at all. Rudy was still the one to break the stalemate, prodded on by the bartender, who reminded Rudy of his life in Japan. That finally set off Rudy's urge to change again, getting him out of the funk.

Geese was the one to set Paul straight, though I do wish he had elaborated more. Maybe bringing up the point that Paul also would have died on that continent were they swapped. Paul was still completely lost until Rudy demanded a redo.

Actually, I'm now reminded that Paul fucked up years ago as well - when he lashed out at Rudy for stoning the bully and making him bleed (when Rudy was only using water spells).

Sympathy for his situation and drinking? Yes.
Lashing out at Rudy? Not really. That's on him. I can see why he ended up doing it, but he's still wrong.

Are you basing this on his nails, the fact that he was born there, or some other characteristic?
