Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town

Lloyd is a novice adventurer whose dream is to discover “true strength” in the capital he's always admired, despite growing up with neighbors who always considered him weak. He departs his hometown, which just so happens to be located right next to one of the most dangerous dungeons in the world. Lloyd may think of himself as powerless, but when he goes to the city that serves as the starter town for adventurers, the difference between him and everyone else couldn't be starker.

I have read a couple of volumes of the light novel for Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town (Tatoeba Last Dungeon Mae no Mura no Shounen ga Joban no Machi de Kurasu Youna Monogatari), I think it sucks overall. That said, I think it could work very well as an anime, particularly if it can approximate something of what Konosuba brought while it plays up the adult aspect of the comedy instead of the more childish ones. Hopefully the action sequences are well animated.

First episode is out, will try it later.

...are a bunch of these characters named after vitamins?

Well, watched the first episode. Rushed (but may recover after first episode introductions), not funny as of yet, animation is OK-ish from what can be expected. But overall, was entertained more than I thought I would be. Well, not really entertained, just something easy to waste time on while my brain is resting. A lot of the jokes in the LN work because of the narrator, but hopefully they can be better incorporated as the series goes on. Not that I care much about it anyways.

Tatoeba Last Dungeon Mae no Mura no Shounen ga Joban no Machi de Kurasu Youna Monogat

"* Based on a comedic fantasy light novel series written by Satou Toshio and illustrated by Watanuki Nao.

Optimistic young Lloyd would like nothing more than to achieve his life's dream of becoming a soldier in the capital. Unfortunately, his neighbors and friends consider him the weakest boy in the village and are sure Lloyd will meet his doom the minute he sets out on his foolhardy journey. But no one realizes that by living near the most dangerous dungeon in the land, what the locals consider to be everyday annoyances would be apocalyptic for anybody else! And when Lloyd defies the townspeople and makes off for a starter town for adventurers, the rest of the kingdom is about to find out just how overpowered Lloyd really is!"

    Genre(s): Comedy, action, fantasy

As the world turns, so another Isekai anime is birthed... This one, while not particularly ambitious, does have a... strange energy it its production. The soft (low budget if you're feeling unkind) animation style contrasts nicely with the punchlines of Lloyd not knowing how overpowered he is. It's easy to watch, and features your usual assortment of overdesigned (visually) female characters grouped up for fluffy adventure where tension is essentially theoretical at this point. I enjoyed the first batch of episodes far more than its closest cousin, texture wise - the smartphone isekai from a few years back.

The voice actress on the witch really gets into her exclamations of shock.

I thought the first three episodes have been pretty funny overall.

The jokes land for me and they're poking at the isekai tropes pretty much constantly.

I'm enjoying this more animated, but the jokes are better executed in the LN in my opinion, but yeah... it's been better than what I was expecting entertainment wise.

It's no Non Non Biyori (few things can ever meet that bar), but it does make me laugh or at least smile and passed the 3 episode test.

    Episode 4 is out...

In general, I hope not all the fights are this anti-climatic, even if it serves a comedic angle. For example, when Lloyd was blocking attacks from Merthophan, there were a couple of shots that looked very awesome animated, so hope to see more of that at least.

Some of the jokes hit home, but this really is just about as milk toast as fantasy adventure get at this point (I had to remind myself this wasn't an isekai), where almost all other actors of the fantasty world exist to facilitate the power fantasy, and my interest is dropping fast, but the jokes alone are giving me hope...

Jokes should get better as we go along I reckon, but we'll see.

Now we see some suspicion about the "big brother", if he's a bad guy, I'd hope they would be more subtle about it. Seems to early to throw some suspicion his way.

I forgot all about big bro seeming devious. This show could use some tension, so I welcome it, but am afraid it's all one big misdirect.

Yeah, this series is like "What if One Punch Man, but without the good genre deconstruction."

    Eh?

It deconstructs or subverts almost every situation in the genre.

You could argue OPM is "better" because it is more dry about it, but Mob Psycho was better than OPM about that. This is nonstop parody of adventure series, fantasy, and even isekai tropes.

I have my doubts that it won't start recycling and get stale, but so far so good.

Could be a red-herring as you say, but given the look grandma gave and how he split once he heard she was coming increases the chances of him being involved in something... maybe not a bad guy, but doing things not approved by their village.

Is it possible that Lloyd is actually strong even within Kunlun? Like everyone else just leaves the village at some point while he stayed there until now, leveling up against the stronger monsters there?

    Peace.

Could be, but I think he still has compared himself to others in the village that do actual feats better than him... assuming it's not all anecdotal to him, that he has actually witnessed these things.

Those aren't the same thing. This show subverts it's genre. But simply doing the opposite of what the genre would normally do is not a deconstruction.

I like how they've given up trying to convince him he's strong and now just resort to tricking him into being the hero.

I like Phyllo, though not sure about how they're dressing... seem too modern.

And yeah, I like the tricking him aspect, but at the same time protecting him from himself, meaning... protecting others from him.
