What downsides?
The only downside shown so far is that the monster you name might kill you because he gets to be stronger than you at some point under certain circumstances
Other than that, nothing has been shown so far or even suggested.

I think the proof is that we've seen another demon lord name two monsters, and been decapitated and eaten by the latter of the two. That's a pretty big downside. So is repeatedly drawing the attention of other demon lords. Rimuru lucked out with Milim. It could have been the one who's agents were just thrashed around by Milim. They could have hurt or killed a lot of the Jura Forest citizens before Rimuru and the oni had time to intervene.
Rimuru inspires trust and loyalty. That's the big difference. Name them, look after them, give them a purpose and place to exist, and not just use them as pawns in petty power games.
Another point might be naming a monster takes a huge amount of mana/energy most namers can't afford if the monster they want to name already is powerful.
Rimuru already is off the charts in that category, as he can name some monsters that are considered rare/exceptional already.
All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral, or fattening. And then: Golf.
Agreed. Rimuru is like a pile of mana. Other monsters don't even have the mana pool to name a monster worth naming.
Peace.
And if they drain their mana like Rimuru did, some random hostile monster can easily dispatch of them. Rimuru was lucky to be surrounded by allies when he fainted.
Peace.
Luck is in the fact that when he is out cold, no threat is coming.
When he named the goblins, a Milim or an Orc attack would've been a major problem for example.
All the things I really like to do are either illegal, immoral, or fattening. And then: Golf.
Except he didn't know he would faint. He was lucky it happened the way it did because so many bad things could've happened when he was out cold.
Peace.
He was out for 3 days, it's a very long time. He was lucky everyone around was still fearing Veldora.
But some groups were already lurking around since Veldora's aura had disapeared for quite a long time already.
Plot armor works well.

Rimuru himself put out Veladora's aura for some time. He learned to suppress it later, and only completely hides both Veladora and his own substantial aura now thanks to Shizu's mask.
Yet, Milim could still sense it. Down to pinpoint accuracy.
Episode 18
- -- -- - -
That Carrion's underling guy was so stupid it's a good thing he personally got rid of himself, but it's a pity he had to do it in a way that inconveniences others. A rope and a sturdy tree branch would have been enough for him.
Rimuru needs to do something about those clown folks that just keep coming back to the Jura forest, causing trouble. He ought to burn down their circus tents once to see if that kept them in check for a while.
Yeah, this was a pretty boring episode.
I think maybe demons are just stupid...
EP19:
underwhelming...and once again extremely convenient
Yeah, this anime's ultimate failure will be it's unwillingness to show real conflict. Everything resolves itself with a Disney-esque happy end of sorts, and quickly so.
Really frustrating, because it's a goodshow otherwise.
What happened? I'm not actually watching because I'm waiting for the part I haven't read yet.
Peace.
Milim did a One-Punch.
This show is like playing one of those historical/fantasy city building/minor defense games on Easy/Casual mode.
I just want to check because it wasn't clear, Great Sage said basically said that Rimuru at Charybdis' core off screen and it was being analyzed right?
Seems like the powerup he'd get from that should help him catch up to Milim.
I think the bigger issue is the other demon lord ALSO being totally cool and not a threat.
I love doing that. All I really want to do is build my base and max out my tech tree!
