Anyway, I heard about the circumstances of the series ending, and I feel bad for Kubo. He wasn't ending the series cause he was done, but because he was basically told "You get 3 more issues. End it." Quality of the series aside, that's a shitty situation for any creator.
Is that what happened? I thought its popularity increased after the anime got canceled...

There's a pretty good video talking about it here:

It's pretty light on manga spoilers, only shows a few panels from beyond the anime and talks about it in the broadest of terms.

So... that video basically said Bleach was repetitive (Which One Piece and Naruto are 100x more of) which was responsible for the decline in popularity. I also noticed the decline started around the same time the anime ended, I don't think it's a coincidence. Almost looks like to me Shounen Jump spent the last 4 years for sure at trying to kill Bleach deliberately.

I think the deliberate killing of Bleach started 1 year before the cancellation of the anime. In Japan someone having problems with someone else in a position of authority = I will get even in the end for your defiance type of attitude that they have over there.

NO that's not it. I enjoyed Bleach, Manga and anime.

Naruto Manga and anime is like torture. I guess Naruto did get an ending, not the good ending but at least it got an ending I guess. Bleach was pretty much trashed by Shounen Jump for the last 4-5 years, maybe longer.

Oh well, it's done and over with now.

You enjoyed Bleach, which is perfectly fine really, but you need to take into account that other people did not while Naruto and One Piece have been soaring in popularity for ages now, check at the comments on this very forums for sampling. If Bleach got canceled it is because it had bad ratings, plain and simple. I`m not sure where this conspiracy theory comes from, pretty much everyone is aware of Bleach`s drop in ratings, why do you think the higher ups hated Bleach?

    *Darth video*

Thanks! I`ll have to check it out once I`m done with work.

I can't believe for a second that Naruto kept a higher population even though it's 95 % more filler than any other anime out there and the fillers are all dialogue that I can't see anyone watching even in Japan. Naruto is one of the worst anime to ever exist. The Manga was decent but it wasn't any better than Bleach and possibly way worse.

I got that info from the video that states Kubo's higher ups hated him for not listening to them and made his life hell for not listening. Kind of tells you right there...

Personally, I still love Naruto, but I fucking HATE the anime at this point. All the filler is just a knife that stabs my hand every time I try and reach for the thing I love. I'm so glad it'll finally be over in the next month or two.

One Piece is much better. It hasn't done any long filler arcs in ages, but it fills in other ways. It tries to stretch every chapter out into an episode, and that leads to a lot of DBZ style stalling, which is just bad for pacing.

Of course it`s popular, the reason Naruto is still on filler LONG after the manga finished is because filler still has decent ratings. Are you seriously questioning Naruto`s popularity?

The thing to note here is:

    Popular != Good.

    Also:

    I like it != Good.

    In short:

People can like bad things, and that's okay. I like Strike Witches, for example. And there is such a thing as Twilight.

When did I say anything about quality?

I wasn't replying to your post.

I was mostly replying to SS and his bafflement about how Naruto is popular.

I watched the 20min video. doesn't tell much.
well, i get that Kubo is sort of similiar to Kanye west, he's great at what he does and knows it, but he's also fun to hate and prone to rock throwing in his glass house.
the video says that art declined (style, composure, backgrounds), plot got repetitive, characters became stale imitations of themselves and there was no over reaching goal point that the story wanted to follow.
which I think are all points we have raised in the forum through out the years.

what I don't understand is how supposedly his conflicts with the editors have affected the series to this extent: so hard and so long.
(I could understand an argument that claimed the editors stacked the magazine with supernatural demons mangas like nurayihon no mago and Aoi no Rin as a way to confound the readers with the same kind of story and make them 'tired' of reading it. I won't necessarily agree that that's what happened, but I understand the argument).
in what ways did the 'EDITORS' kill his manga? really, explain it to me like I'm 12 years old, because 'They didn't give him enough cover photos' is hardly an example.

also: in hindsight, i'm much more positive towards the fullbring saga, it wasn't great, but they were trying.
also2: the older i get, the more I think Dragon Ball Z had a perfect plot structure. maybe not pacing, but definitely a solid streamlined and efficient progression. it even hardly had any really bad fillers.

sig made by Itachi-y2k5, thanks, dude!
Currently Watching: probably a show directed at 9 years old girls, lets be honest.

You know the important distinction between Batman and me? Batman is fictional. In real life, there isn't always an alternative.

My problem with the Fullbringer arc was that they spent the entire arc introducing and training Ichigo in these new powers, only to take them away and just give him back his shinigami powers right at the end. Making the whole thing completely pointless.

The implication is basically that he's difficult and disrespectful to his management. So his management didn't support him. And these people have control over literally everything he does. There's countless ways they could have negatively impacted his work.

I'm mean, shit, if you want to get conspiracy theorist about it. They can post whatever they want as the popularity rankings which determine what get's cancelled. In it's last year, Bleach is literally in last(13th) place. Even if the quality goes way down, I'd expect a drop in popularity. But all the way to the bottom?

    A. yes, that was crap.

    B. I get that there are negative effects to being in a bad relationship with the editors and managers, but I'd like to hear specifics (even if just rumors) about how they 'destroy him'..
did they change the rankings? I never followed those rankings, and I still thought Bleach was a horrible mess.
did they cut his assistants roster? take away the good ones and hire new ones every month?
did they push extra (uncredited and unpaid) work on him?
did they tell him to drop the last plot twist he wrote and redo something from two months ago?

I can't say anything about the first few, because i hate inside information about these stuff, but about the story? It's still very much Kubo's style, just that his style has grown stale and it's the fifth time we saw every twist.

and considering the fight between Ichigo and jehova has been on for about 10 chapters before the 'three weeks left!', I'm guessing that either was more than 3 weeks, or that the editors saw what he had in plan and said 'no, that's too much. this is as close as you ever was to having a finale, finish it".

Well sure. Who wouldn't. But I seriously doubt we ever will.

Hmm, I hadn't considered that. I assume he has to give them chapter outlines. So if he was already fighting the big bad of the arc, it's possible the plan was for the arc to end in 3 chapters anyway and they simply didn't extend him for another.

well here we are the future, and youtube suggested this to me.

a guy talking for two hours about how bleach is good.

it's basically a scene-to-scene recap that somehow feels longer to watch than it was to read the manga. his point is that ichigo's desire to protect others is present in all scenes and evolves through the story arcs. the problem is that the video confuses encyclopedic knowledge (what happened, how the names are pronounced) with a summary(what we know, what is important to know, how the information is conveyed). my main gripe with the video is that it doesn't address most of the critisims that people had with the story.

Well, here we are further in the future. The guy who made the original video about bleach downfall retracted it, saying that he now understands that sj chapter orders do not represent popularity ranking.
He still makes the same points about the story structure with the arcs and now goes into the two aspects of fights scene (something I kinda wrote about in the flaming pit a few years ago).
Watch it if you still care enough to waste an hour.
