But scenes like the close-ups of Aqua´s butt surved no purpose other than .. showing her butt. There was no joke involved. And that´s something I don´t remember that way from season one.

Uh, that scene absolutely had a purpose.
It confirmed that she doesn't wear panties, or as theorized by fans, she wears magic invisible panties so no one can see her panties (remember she's an idiot). It presented the viewers a clear view from the side of her butt to the front of her hips, confirming the theory.
Prior to this, it has been ambiguous, similar to Kurousagi from Mondaiji-tachi.

Thus far, the anime has never had a view that completely eliminates the possibility she was wearing a thong. They never showed all the way up her leg/hip from the front.
Apparently, in the manga, she does wear panties, and the LN only hints at the possibility, never directly addressing it. Thus, it has always been a question.
This show has a manga?!
More importantly, Megumin has her own manga as well (the name isn't too hard to guess).
I haven't read the main manga adaptation. Maybe I should have a look at it to study this panties issue out of purely academic interest.
