Thread: Horror Movies

1. #1
after a conversation yesterday at a xmas party that i went to, we began to talk about Horror movies and their disapointments. we brought up classics such as The Exorcist and let downs like "House on Haunted Hill" and "The Ring". and then i said to my friends what their fav. scary movie was.

most of the replied where "The Ring" "Exorcist" and even "Glitter."

then i brought up my fav scary movie and they almost forgot about that one. which is "Event Horizon"

now in comparision to all the horror movies i saw, i must say taht E.H actually scared the living daylights out of me.

then we got into the debate that horror movie isnt usually blood and gore, but it's a mentallity thing.

what do u guys think? what is ur fav. horror movie and waht to u is "horror?"

Actually I don't like horror. It scares me.
But Wrong Turn was a good one

yeah. i dont like horror in general, but 'event horizon' was just awesome. 'requiem for a dream' is not horror, yet it freaked the shit out of me. that movie had the strongest fucking message ever (check out 'pi' too, same director). but if i had to pick a flick from the genre, i'd choose 'resident evil'.

Asian movies are pretty scary, such as The Tale of Two Sisters and Phone. There's not a lot of good American horror movies, but anything with zombies can scare the crap out of me.

6. #6
oh yeah, '28 days later' was cool

7. #7
The Ring and The Exorsist aint scary at all.

If you ask me "What Lies Beneath" was pretty scary, much scarier than "The Ring" and what not.

I find the acclaimed scary movies usually go for gross out tactics. Where as thrillers tend to be more scary because they catch you by surprise and often have you on the edge of your seat because you KNOW something messed up is gonna happen, you just don't know when.

I was like that when I watched The Ring. I was just waiting for something messed up to happen, and then the movie finished and I was all "What? Thats it?"

the idea behind it is scary, but the movie itself (save the girl coming out of the well scene) is pretty boring.

I've heard mixed reviews about Gothica. Has anyone seen it. Some friends are planning to go check it out...yes i know it's been out for some time now. Anyways does it fall under the horror genre or is it some suspense/drama mixed in passing itself off as horror. Is it worth the $9.50 or just another one of em films that provide cheap thrills?

A few of my friends said it was actually scary.

I'm thinking its scary on a higher level than those who just want to see gore and stuff. Since its about Psychosis, thats usually loads scarier than monsters, because there are actually people like that to an extent.

I mean, jeeze, did you see the preview were that chick was walking like an undead or something? That creeped me out, and it was just from the preview!

there are some creepy moments but most of the scares come from silence being broken by a sudden loud bang, or clank.

*ahem* I concur with my esteemed collegue, Mr. KDM. Just the goddamn PREVIEW is fucked up.

Speaking of classics (briefly mentioned in Vicious' first post, I swear), I always thought John Carpenter's The Thing was a good scary/creepy flick. ANd I was unexpectedly seriously creeped out when I watched the original 1950s version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers a couple of years ago. (admittedly, i am easy-ish to creep out). Does Alien fall into the sci-fi category or horror or both? Cause I remember being pretty freakin' scared the first time I watched that one, too.

And who can forget the Sam Raimi classics, Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2?

Also,

Here's what Stephen King has to say on this subject:
"I recognize terror as the finest emotion
and so I will try to terrorize the reader.
But if I find that I cannot terrify,
I will try to horrify,
and if I find that I cannot horrify,
I'll go for the gross-out.
I'm not proud."
- Danse Macabre

I think relying primarily on the gross-out should also be a filmmaker's last resort. (my whopping two cents)

Yeah it was great. But it's horrifying. Like when you watched Hellraiser when your 5, it fucks with you. I've seen some pretty grafic movies before, but Ichi is by far the most cruel i've seen.

But to name som acual horror movies...
Cannibal Holocausto 2 - A man gets his penix chopped off an eaten in front of him by some tribal guy. plus there's zombies, I think.

The Beyond - John Romero is awsome, he explodes little girls heads.

Jason X - Ok, not really a horror movie, but it was funny when he killed those girls in the sleeping bags. And when he smashed that bitchs' face.

Alien "Remake" - Awsome, watch it now!
*looks over at hachimitsu* You still haven't watched it yet have you?

Wild Zero - There's zombies. And this quote, after a guy finds out the girl he likes has a wee-wee. "Love knows no genders! Rock and roll!" -Guitar Wolf
And then aliens show up, and zombies fall on love.

Man, wasn't The Wizard of Oz a scary movie? Those flying monkeys scare the hell outta me. *looks out the window to make sure there aren't any flying monkeys around*

Seriously though, I think Perfect Blue is a pretty scary movie. It's anime BTW and I guess not really "horror" in the classic sense of the word. But just thinking that if what happened in the movie happen to me.... that'd be pretty scary. Sorry for those of you that haven't seen it, can't metion more than that for fear of fucking up your Perfect Blue experience.

Also, is it just me or are the Friday the 13th movies the funniest movies ever. Sure, they were scary when I was a kid. But now that I'm older I just laugh my ass off when watching one. *Runs away from Jason then just stops and stands around for a minute hoping that I've lost him* *GASP! It's Jason!* *dies*

*avoiding all eye contact w/ KDM* uh, ye-e-e-e-s-s... I saw it. Uh-huh, I saw it eight, no- twelve times, even. In Canada. With the Prime Minister. Yeah, that's it. So help me Jesus.

And hey, I scoped out Wild Zero and I can't wait to check it out....

*to self* I wonder if the Prime Minister is free next Saturday?

PS: when I was little, the flying monkeys scared the piss out of me, too.

I guess directors cut. I just called it remake because they "remade" it. As in, went through and made it look all pretty and clean.
I dunno if there is, but there could be a directors cut DVD of the original "dirty" film version. I hope that made sense.
